Introduction
For decades teachers have been combining language and content through techniques such as
storytelling, games, role plays, and, more recently, integration of subject area. The introduction of
teaching language in order to achieve proficiency based outcomes has underscored the importance of
meaning and context in comprehension and production. The guidelines developed by ACTFL and the
Educational Testing Service (ETS) define what language users are able to do with the language at
various stages. In the last ten years, many professionals grasped the idea of using the proficiency
definition of what it means to know a language for purposes of organizing instruction. The proficiency
model defines language ability in terms of three criteria:
(1) functions: linguistic tasks performed such as asking for information, narrating past activities, or
expressing opinions.
(2) contexts/contents: the settings in which one uses language, e.g., informal settings,
transactional situations, formal settings, together with the topic or themes of conversation, such
as topics related to self and to immediate environment (family, shopping, transportation,
restaurant, etc., concrete topics of personal and general interest, and abstract topics.
(3) accuracy: the precision of the message in terms of fluency, grammar, vocabulary, pragmatic
competence, pronunciation, sociolinguistic competence (Buck, Byrnes, and Thompson 1989).
Meaning and contextualized practice form the foundation for an approach that seeks to develop
proficiency.
The recent focus on more meaningful, contextualized teaching has prompted some changes in the
traditional bottom-up mechanical /communicative format of textbook exercises. In his review of textbook
exercise formats, Waltz (1989) found that current textbooks are “contextualizing” mechanical or skill-
getting exercises in a wide variety of ways such as by:
Recent studies in foreign language teaching have pointed to the possible benefit of a “top-down” or
“whole language” approach to language instruction, through which students manipulate language to
communicate thoughts by using higher level skills before attending to discrete language structures with
the use of lower level skills. By means of activities such as negotiation of meaning and joint problem
solving with the teacher and classmates, students participate in amore complex task than the students
are capable of producing by themselves (Adir-Hauck 1992). Therefore, meaning and context take the
front seat in this performance before competence approach, which reflects how first-language learners
acquire language. Anderson (1984) proposes four criteria for judging a whole language approach to
language teaching. Language learning should:
Basically, the above principles have been utilized in the development of "Al-Jaleys" textbook. In addition,
a culture-based textbook and its syllabus identify a possible sequence of contexts of communication,
grammatical structures, and cultural topics that could be integrated. The culture topics in Al-Jaleys appear
in three categories:
4
(1) those dealing with surface features of the Arabic culture with primary emphasis on behavior;
(2) those pertaining to daily life in the target culture-habits, patterns of living, etc.;
(3) those dealing with a more conceptual level, with attention to political, social, economical,
culture institutions and pattern, and with the challenges currently facing Arabs. The convergence of these
factors serves as a process through which students are able to acquire a set of behavior, body of
knowledge, a set of skills, and a cultural proficiency that facilitate learning about the Arabic culture and
their own cultures as well.

1. Comparative and superlative forms of Arabic adjectives are the same except that the
comparative form is placed between the two nouns you are comparing, and is always
followed by the preposition 5'L
You must have noticed that the adjective 4 5† is used in both sentences.
2. You can make comparative and superlative forms by dropping the long medial vowel
and prefixing " to the adjective.
4! † becomes 4†
4!~T becomes 4 ~T
If the second and third radical consonants are identical, you need to use Shadda (the
double letter diacritic) as in:
becomes R
becomes R

Maqsura ‰ as in:
nB H becomes „8H
B
n d becomes „8d

Grammar ! +2 "
There are two types of sentences in Arabic; a verbal sentence which begins with a verb,
and a nominal sentence which begins with a noun or a personal pronoun. Examples
are:
1. A verbal sentence:
Q 45(e #: 3 ' ˆ=
2. a. A nominal sentence (starts with a noun):
) h5X „ 4: = ,@ .5 %
78
When the verb precedes its subject, it is always in the singular form and agrees with the
subject in gender ONLY.
Examples:
a singular masculine subject n \D #: #\ T ' ˆ@
a plural masculine subject n \D #: #` E T ' ˆ@
Notice that the verb remains the same though the number of the subject is changed
from singular to plural. You will notice the same thing in the following sentences.
Now, if the verb follows its subject, it is marked by both number and gender, as in the
following examples:
n \D #: ' ˆ@ #\ T
n \D #: 2$ ˆ@ #` E T
n \D #: 5. $ ˆ@ #, \ T
n \D #: ' ˆ@ #6 \ T
N.B. Some grammarians treat equational sentences as nominal sentences.

Grammar
1. Defective Verbs in Arabic are a category of verbs which end with a long vowel such as:
to meet +_
to walk rA2
to invite /?
to see, witness |
These verbs will take the following forms when changed to the present tense.
|„R r_D „ +_
Rp| +A2 „ rA2
p ? „ /?
|p| | „|
Notice that even in the past tense, the long vowel is reduced to a short one for:
D0A2 „ + A2 „ <
The long vowel is changed to the corresponding forms (displayed in the previous frame) for the
rest of the pronouns. Examples are:
you (f.s.) walked 0
J A2 p 0
J D\
I invited 0 ? „/\
2. You can create adverbs from the adjectives derived originally from time concepts by
changing the case from nominative p
^ to accusative ! as in the following:
daily /! 2 p +
d2
weekly /! ? 4 , p +
d? 4 ,
175
monthly /! "A p R
d "A
yearly, annually /! „R
d

1. The Active Participle, which can be formed from all transitive and
intransitive verbs, is made on the pattern FAA’IL ^&?

The active participle often functions as an agent noun (one who does the
action).
