Elijah Lovejoy a.) evil set out to eliminate- slavery b.) favorable factors- time of change- the missing corners of the map are almost entirely filled in, people are settling into towns, the United States is growing as a country and is a recognizable power at this point, different viewpoints are developing regarding slavery and its impact on the economy, if its constitutional, etc. c.) Lovejoy pictured a world where people were treated equally, and where freedom was greater- he also probably pictured a world where his printing presses wouldnt be destroyed 3 times d.) Practical- very practical! How is declaring that people should be treated equally regardless of their skin color idealistic? Come on! Cynical much?! e.) Level of success- in his life, not incredibly successful, so to speak. More of a posthumous success. His brothers published an account of

his life in 1837, he had a library, a towns nickname, and a monument dedicated in his memory. During his life, he was murdered by being shot five times by an angry mob. Some historians state that this was the first unofficial civil war battle. He was an important forerunner in the fight against slavery however. f.) He fought the good fought, his legacy is remembered. He was a Presbyterian minister who actually stood up against slavery, unlike others, whose pulpits were silent. He ran an anti-Jacksonian newspaper. **---------------------------------------** Lyman Beecher 1. The evil the reformer set out to eliminate- led second great awakening of the united states, president of lane theological seminary, set up new England based revivalry Mission: train ministers to win over the west for Protestantism, as slavery was threatening to cripple and divide the Presbyterian church 2. The factors that created a favorable climate for reform- many things being debated and questioned, slavery among them people were trying out new things so this was a good time to introduce his ideas into the mix. 3. The vision the reformer had for a better world- destroy Catholicism, stop protestants from splitting, keep blacks from being taught

4. Characterize the individual as an idealistic or a practical reformeridealistic idiot. Hated Catholicism, said anti-slavery was radical and refused to teach black students, he was once charged with heresy, he resigned 5. The level of success of the reformer- had a successful kid, Harriet Beecher Stowe His personal success- Protestantism didnt die out. However, he and his nasty freaking racist as crap ways didnt prevail. Slavery was abolished, and he didnt succeed in destroying a highly orthodox denomination. Catholicism is still around, and slavery isnt, so I would say he wasnt that successful, but he was regarded by many and well known, but not too successful. 6. How the individual built a foundation for the realization of reform in a later periodBeecher and Unitarians- set up stuff vital through 19th century and today
