HE 262 Article Abstract Assignments Instruction (25 points) This assignment has two primary goals: To gain additional

knowledge and understanding on a childrens health issue; and to become more acquainted with the professional literature. Phase 1 Find a Childrens Health Article Find and read a current article on a childrens health topic that cites research. The following sources are acceptable: A. Research articles from professional journals that report primary research. Primary research articles are ones where the author discusses his/her research and findings. See instructions below on how to obtain articles through PCC Library. B. Newspaper/news magazine feature articles which cite research results. These articles are several pages long and contain information on several latest research studies. (NY Times, Newsweek, Time) Sources not acceptable for this assignment include: How to articles found in commercial magazines, such as Parents Magazine or newspaper daily columns. Phase 2 Write an Abstract Your abstract should be 250-350 words in length; single-spaced, 12-font. You are condensing the articles main points. Your abstract should be organized in the following manner: 1. Introduction State the overall main focus of the article and its main supporting themes 2. Research Identify and provide brief information about the research design ( For instance: A three year study of 3000 children between the ages of 3-5 on childhood obesity and family food purchasing patterns. Parents were interviewed before, during, and after the study to determine family food purchases patterns) 3. Research Findings Provide a couple of sentences that discuss the research findings. Usually in this section there is also a brief discussion on the limitations of the findings. (For instance: We found xyz in our study but because the focus was on children between the ages of 3-5, we do not know if these same findings can be applied to infants) 4. Conclusions Describe research conclusions; may include recommendations for future research areas, recommendations for public policy and/or individual behavior changes. Do not include your personal opinion on the article or its content. This is an article abstract not an article review assignment. Your goal is to provide a summary overview of the articles main points and conclusions. Cite your article. Below is an example Urban road-traffic and blood pressure and heart rate in preschool children. Goran Belojevic, Branko Jakoljevic, Vesna Stojanov, Katarina Paunovic and Jelena Ilic. Environment International, Volume 34, Issue 2, February 2008, pp. 226-231. http://0-www.sciencedirect.com.library.pcc.edu:80/science?_ob=ArticleURL&_udi=B6V7X-4PNF9WS2&_user=2141170&_coverDate=02%2F29%2F2008&_rdoc=1&_fmt=high&_orig=search&_sort=d&_docanchor=&view=c&_acct=C000056283&_version=1&_urlVe rsion=0&_userid=2141170&md5=2cda70b390779199d6cf8f2fcfe236bf
