OBITUARIES LETTER TO
THE EDITOR
Curtis L. Barendreght
Curtis L. Barendreght, 69, of Howard City, went to be
with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012 at U-M
Hospital, Ann Arbor.
Curtis was born Dec. 4, 1942, in Grant, the son of Vern
and Elsie (Sage) Barendreght. He retired from General Mo-
tors in 1998 and was a lifelong, hardworking farmer and
proud owner of Curts Quality Springers. Along with loving
life on The Farm, he was a lifetime member of the Mont-
calm County Fair and a lifetime 4-H enthusiast, showing
rabbits and horses, and becoming head of both groups along
the way. Many great stories were told that started with either
raising rabbits or showing horses. He shared this love with
his daughters and their children, and delighted in both of
their successes. He not only enjoyed raising crops and caring
for farm animals, but equally enjoyed time spent outdoors.
He spent many hours during hunting seasons pursuing the
deer and turkeys that he watched and looked after during
the off season. This passion he shared with his family and
special friends, and was just as happy to see them bag a buck
as if it was his own. Curtis was a kind man who was gener-
ous with his humor and his hugs. His smile and the twinkle
in his eyes would sometimes give away the mischief of an
impending practical joke. Throughout his life, he met many
people who he left an indelible impression on. His family
will dearly miss the man who loved them so much who they
knew as their husband, dad and grandpa, and his friends will
miss the warmth and humor of the man they simply knew
as Curt.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine (Miles); children, Shelly
(Ralph) Boerema of Grant, Kelly (Steve) Guentert of Free-
land, Tammy (Chad) Gould of Howard City, Julie (Chris)
Fennema of Wayland, Jenny (Blair) Orsatti of Land OLakes,
FL; 10 grandchildren, Nicholas, Justin, Andrew, Rashelle
Boerema, Lauren, Nathan Guentert, Trevor, Emma Gould,
Averi, Ashlyn Orsatti; sisters, Donna Bordewyk, Vera (John)
Paulen, Caroline Barendreght; brother, Jerry (Sharon) Bar-
endreght; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Miles; sisters-in-law,
Jacqueline Larsen, Charlotte (Bill) Wells, Ellen (Greg) Os-
born; many nieces and nephews, and special friends. He was
preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Rodney and
Roger. The family received friends at Ensley Baptist Church,
where services were held. Pastors James Ankerberg and John
Fields offciated. Interment Hillside Cemetery, Grant. In lieu
of fowers the family is accepting donations to further the
future of the horse area at the Montcalm County 4-H Fair-
grounds to honor Curtis love of horses and 4-H. Checks may
be made out to Tri-County Country Horses 17705 Almy
Rd., Howard City, MI 49329. Memorial contributions may
also be made out to Ensley Baptist Church. Arrangements by
Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs.
Donald McDonald
Donald McDonald, 74, of Morley, passed away Jan. 27,
2012, at his residence.
He was born Feb 5, 1937, in Harbor Springs, the son of
George and Leona McDonald. During his working years he
worked as a foreman for Pridgeon and Clay for more than 30
years. He loved golfng, hunting and spending time with his
grandkids. He served his country in the U.S. Army.
Surviving are two children, Leon McDonald of Morley
and Kim Sabin of Morley; four grandchildren and fve great
grandchildren; seven brothers and sisters; and several niec-
es and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents;
his wife, Elaine and fve brothers and sisters.
As to Donalds wishes cremation has taken place and no
services will take place. Arrangements were entrusted to the
Heckman Funeral Home.
Patricia Ann Patton
Mrs. Patricia Ann Patton, 60, of Newaygo, died Tuesday,
Jan. 31, 2012, in Newaygo.
She was born Patricia Ann White in Corbin, Ky., the
daughter of Opal (Cobb) and Vernon White on Feb. 2,
1951. She married Roger M. Patton on November 8, 1967 in
Grand Rapids. She was an apartment leasing manager until
her retirement. She attended Resurrection Life Church in
Newaygo.
She is survived by her husband Roger Patton of Newaygo,
her sons Joseph Allen and Shannon Marie Patton of Char-
lotte, Charles Edward Patton and Fran Mitchelle of Newaygo,
her mother Opal Gibson of Newaygo, several nieces and
nephews, her best friend/sister Sam Vanyzlland several ad-
opted kids that called her mom. She was preceded in death
by her father Paul Gibson.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. from the McKinley
Funeral Home, Newaygo on Saturday, Feb. 4, with Pastor
Doug Bennett offciating. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m.
to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. For memorials

My name is Jim Miller and I recently heard
a rumor that our township clerk admittedly
started. She informed people that I was turn-
ing many of my neighbors in for zoning viola-
tions in Reynolds Township. This is absolutely
not true. I have never turned in my neighbors
or anyone else in the township. I believe my
neighbors have the right to use their own prop-
erty with out interference from me or township
offcials. In October, our township clerk wrote
with the right to criticize government comes
the responsibility of knowing all the facts and
being well informed citizens. I would sug-
gest that you take our own advice, since I was
falsely accused, and publicly apologize so that
anyone else that has heard this rumor knows it
is not true.

Red Flannel Festival names 2012 grand marshal
Community leader, volunteer Joe Watson Sr. selected for dedication to others
The Red Flannel Festival Board of Direc-
tors proudly named Cedar Springs resident
Joe Watson, Sr. as the 2012 Grand Marshal
for the 73rd Annual Celebration, to be held
on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012.
The Festival is extremely proud and
thankful for the many years of Mr. Wat-
sons outstanding dedication to the entire
Cedar Springs community, said Michele
Tracy-Andres, president of the festival. His
outstanding community service in several
organizations is very impressive and exactly
what we look for in a Red Flannel Festival
Grand Marshal. Its very obvious Joe loves
Cedar Springs and especially the Red Flan-
nel Festival. The Red Flannel Town is a bet-
ter place because of Joes involvement.
Watson has been a leader in the com-
munity, volunteering his time to several or-
ganizations coaching youth sports and was
one of the founding members of the Cedar
Springs Athletic Association (created for
youth athletics) prior to the formation of
the athletic boosters. He supported the Fes-
tival for many years with his dedicated ser-
vice as a Keystone Kop and Grand Parade
Organizer.
Watson and his wife Florence will reign
over the two weekends of the 15th oldest
Festival in the State of Michigan, sharing
the Red Flannel warmth of our community
to visitors and residents.
WINTERFEST WINNERS
Howard City
Winterfest 2012
More than 30 bowlers participated in the Turkey Bowl-
ing Tournament held on Williams Street Saturday, January
21st for Winterfest 2012. Winterfest included over two dozen
events around Howard City. The family fun day offered chil-
dren a hill to slide on, snow to paint, treasure to dig for and
chickens to bowl.
In addition to bowling, teams could compete in wooden
ski and bed racing. The competition was ferce, with bed race
winning team TC Bean Counters, turkey bowling winner Bev
Clark, and wooden ski race was neck to neck draw between
bank managers Amber from Independent Bank and Michelle
from Firstbank.
Edgar Farm Place won the chili cook off. Keith Grannis was
the winner of the penguin polar race. Second and third place
went to Kim Endres and Katie Bremmer, respectably. Winners
of the business cutout snowman decorating were Jennifer and
Floyd of Creekside Computer Service. Overall, everyone volun-
teering and participating were winners, supporting a commu-
nity event that brings together friends and family.
Special thanks go to those volunteers who love the Panhan-
dle area and Howard City, who give up family and personal
time to give to their community. Without the help of these vol-
unteers who expect nothing in return, events such as Winter-
fest could not take place. Please pat yourselves on the back and
take great pride and satisfaction in a job well done.

students perform in
solo and ensamble
On Saturday, January 28th, the MSBOA District VII Solo
& Ensemble Festival was held at Muskegon Oakridge High
School. Tri County Band entered 23 students in 13 events.
Performances are judged in the areas of tone quality, intona-
tion, rhythm, technique and interpretation. Events receiving
a Division One rating are eligible for the State level festival
held on Saturday, March 24.
Events receiving a First Division rating: Katie Lindsey
(trumpet solo), Khyllian Lowry (trumpet solo), Christine
Scharphorn (tuba solo), Shana Shqair (euphonium solo), Bri-
anna Snyder and Darcie Engleman (clarinet duet), Brianna

To attend college, most students must
pass a very rigorous test fnding the
money to pay for education. Finding
that money is harder every year.
With college costs rising more quickly
than medical care, The Wall Street Jour-
nal recently reported that 88 percent of
families are having diffculty paying for
college.
In the past, college tuition was paid
for with savings, supplemented by gov-
ernment or bank loans. Today, its usu-

Last year, 10 million families took
out college loans loans that are not
discharged in bankruptcy, said Justin
Draeger, National Association of Stu-

Because it costs so much to go to col-
lege, the majority of students leave with
more than $23,000 in debt. Starting
salaries for most college graduates are
$17,000, says Fox News.
Although fewer grants and loans will
be given to students this year, there are
still fnancial resources available if you
know where to look for them.
There are billions of higher educa-
tion dollars that annually go unused
because people just do not know about
the money, where it is and how to get it,
said Idalah D. Womack, MSW, LCSW,
author of 1 True College Money Since
1978, sixth edition (Infnity Publish-
ing).
Womack was the frst person in her
family to go to college. She was inspired
to write the book because of her own ex-
periences trying to get fnancial aid, and
the current sixth edition contains more
than 30 years of her research combined
with college students experiences.
Womack offers a few of her tips to
get started:
nTake a pen, paper and quarters to
a library. Be prepared to gather/copy a
large amount of information.
nGo to the reference desk of your lo-
cal public, high school, college or college
departmental libraries. Ask for books
about scholarships, fellowships and in-
ternships that pay for higher education.
n Grants originate from business,
government, private and/or foundation
sources. Successful and wealthy gradu-
ates often donate money in an effort to
give back and help other students. Many
of these grants can be found in college
catalogs.
nWhile you are awaiting applications
for fnancial help, start looking for a col-
lege.

Project Sleuth - An Art History Mystery An international art
scandal, a haunted architectural masterpiece and a world-renowned
sculpture that suddenly disappears! Popular author Blue Ballietts
Chasing Vermeer series of artful mysteries are the basis for this program
lled with games, crafts and activities. Can you solve the mystery? For

The Friends of the Grant Area District Library are running a
special Valentine sale for children after school between Feb. 6 and
14th from 3-5pm in the lobby of the library. Anyone who might like to
buy their mom or special friend a valentine should come and look at what
the Friends have to offer. On sale will be mugs with chocolates, gift boxes
of candy or a bud vase with ower. The cost of the gifts will range from $3
to $5. This sale is a fundraiser of the Friends of the Library.
Snowpalooza: Snowman-Building Family Fun! Have some winter

Bone Broth
When I was a young man, I remember watching my mother boil soup bones, ox tail, pigs feet, or chicken and turkey
bones. I was just grossed out by this and the thought of eating food made in that way made me nauseated. So now, here it is
many years later, I am recommending bone broth for anyone with digestive disorders, especially IBS, Diarrhea, Colitis, Crohns
Disease, and severe Allergies. We have also seen great results with people who have emotional conditions like depression,
anxiety, and bipolar disorder.
The concept of using this for healing is very simple. It is a way to rest the gut or digestive tract, for 3-4 days so it can
heal. Once it is healed the normal function can return. The mental emotional part of this is covered very well in a book by
Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, GAPS Gut and Psychological Syndrome. Dr. Campbell-McBride shows how the digestive
tract makes many of the neurotransmitters used by the nervous system. So if the gut is not working correctly, those body
chemicals will be out of balance. Restoration of bowel function is essential for recovery of many normal body functions.
Westin A. Price studies many primitive cultures that were extremely healthy. They all cooked and chewed bones, ground up
bones and shells to powder, and added the powder to meals to get minerals and the structural elements to build healthy
strong bones.
Okay. So how does one make bone broth? Very simple. Gather some bones. Collect all your chicken or turkey bones. Put
them in the freezer until you get enough to ll your slow cooker. You can also get them from your butcher by buying soup
bones or oxtails. It is best if you can get your bones from personal sources, like someone who raises their own animals. This
way there will be less toxins, antibiotics, steroids, growth hormones, etc. in those bones. Cooking will destroy most of those
toxins, but starting with good clean stock is best.
When you have enough bones, ll your slow cooker with healthy water (no chlorine) and cook on low for 48-72 hours.
Check and stir occasionally and add a little water if needed to keep the bones covered. After enough
time, remove all the bones and discard them. Stir the broth. There will be a lot of gel oating on the
top. Do not discard that because that will be used by your body to build collagen or cartilage. Put
the broth in dated serving size containers and freeze. That way you have it available when needed.
If you need it now, use it, but make more as soon as possible so you have some available.
It is best to eat nothing but the bone broth and lots of water for two to three days. Warm it (not
in a microwave) and drink as much as you like throughout the treatment period. After the two to
four days, begin to add cooked veggies and fruit. You can drink the juices and water used to cook
the vegetables. Use no raw vegetables or fruit for at least one or two weeks. All raw ber can be
damaging to an irritated lining of the digestive tract. As you progress you will feel better and then
you can slowly begin to add raw fruit and vegetables. Be sure to avoid all chemicals and additives.

Living with todays economy can be a challenge. Prices
go up but paychecks often stay the same; making ends
meet can be tough. One way to confront this problem is
with math. You may consider math another four-letter
word. However, better understanding where your hard-
earned money is going can help you keep your nances
in line...and that takes simple math.
One cost that uctuates a great deal is the cost of gaso-
line. One week its high and the next week its probably
higher. If you know the mileage your vehicle is getting,
however, you might be able to make adjustments and
save a few bucks.
Like keeping your home clean, vigilance is the key.
Clean out your car once a week. If you spend any time in
your car you are going to accumulate stuff during the
course of a week. To keep these items from taking over
the interior, you can throw them away, organize them in
the car or move them out of the car.
Although manufacturers indicate a vehicles city/
highway MPG (miles per gallon), those numbers will
uctuate based on the driver and driving conditions. So
how do you accurately gure the mileage you are getting
with your vehicle? First, prepare a worksheet to record
data; you can use a notebook or a computer-generated
spreadsheet. Whichever you choose, make sure you
have a column for each of the following: Date (on which
you purchase gas), Odometer Reading, Miles Traveled,
Gallons and MPG (Miles Per Gallon). (For budgeting
purposes, you may want to keep a record of Amount you
spent for gas also.)
Now head to the gas station and ll up your tank. Be sure
to use the lock on the nozzle handle so that the pump
shuts off automatically when the tank is full. Do not top
off the tank. Before you leave the gas station, record the
date and the odometer reading and set your trip meter.
The next step is easy...just drive. When your fuel gauge
registers about a quarter of a tank, head back to the gas
station and ll up again. This time, record both your
Odometer Reading and the number of Gallons (found
on the pump) used to ll up your vehicle.
You can nd Miles Traveled in two ways. You can look
at your trip meter (if it hasnt been accidentally reset)
or you can subtract your current odometer reading from
the original reading you logged on your worksheet. For
example, if your rst odometer reading was 46,526
and your current reading is 46,852, you have traveled
(46,852 minus 46,526) 326 miles.
Next divide the miles you have traveled by the number
of gallons of gas you just used-lets say 15.2, 326 divided
by 15.2-and youll have your miles per gallon. In this
case, your MPG is 21.4. However, this reading is ac-
curate for only this tank of gas. You will want to average
several ll-ups to get an accurate idea of your vehicles
MPG. Averaging is easy; just add your miles per gallon
notations and divide by the number of notations listed.
For example, if you have recorded four MPG gures on
your sheet, 21.4, 20.8, 22.7, 19.7, add them all together
for 84.6. Now divide that number by four and you have
your average, 21.2 miles per gallon.
So, what do you do with those numbers? See if you can
improve your gas mileage. How? The rst thing is by
performing simple maintenance. Are the tires properly
inated? Do you have the oil changed regularly? Is the
air lter clean? Next consider your driving habits. Do
you let your vehicle idle for long periods of time? Do
you often drive in stop-and-go trafc? Are you a speed
demon? Do you start quickly and stop suddenly?
Making adjustments and then checking your MPG will
let you know how much you are saving at the pump.
The process will take minimal time, but once you get the
hang of it, you might nd it funimagine that, saving
money while having fun with math.

Many of us have had to deal with a at tire
at some point or another. Getting out the
spare, jacking up the vehicle and changing
the at tire are no fun, especially when you
are dressed up and on your way to work or
a special event. Imagine never having to do
that again. Sound good to you? Then youll
be happy to know that run-at tires are mak-
ing their way onto vehicles.
Although run-at tires were introduced in
1994, they have only recently become avail-
able on more vehicles. Currently, there are
two basic types: self-supporting tires (SST)
and patented auxiliary support tires (PAX).
Both are designed to support the weight of
a vehicle for 100 miles or more and allow
drivers to continue moving down the road
until they can nd a shop to repair the at.
SSTs rely upon heavily reinforced sidewalls
to support the vehicles weight, while PAXs
rely upon semi-rigid support rings.
Run-at tires offer many benets, most im-
portantly, convenience. Drivers dont have
to worry about pulling over and changing
a at tire. They can leave that to the repair
shop. They dont have to carry all of the
tools necessary for changing a at tire, giv-
ing them more space for other things. Some
auto manufacturers, in fact, have taken ad-
vantage of this extra space to incorporate
other features into their models. Vehicles
with run-at tires have a tire pressure moni-
toring system, which lets drivers know
when one of their tires has lost pressure and
reduces the threat of a blowout. In instances
where a blowout does occur, run-at tires
can handle the sudden deation better than
standard tires, allowing drivers to maintain
stability.
Because the technology is relatively new,
run-at tires do pose some problems. Run-
at tires are heavier, adding to the vehicles
weight and using more gas. According to
some consumers, run-at tires do not last
nearly as long as standard tires. Replace-
ments typically cost more than standard tires
and are not readily available at all shops. In
some cases, run-at tires can be repaired,
but nding a shop with the equipment and
knowledge to do so can be difcult.
As run-at tires become more common-
place, the problems with them will no doubt
be worked out. In the meantime, consumers
may want to take the purchase of a vehicle
with run-at tires into serious consideration.
They should learn all that they can about the
tires, including how much they cost and how
easily they can be repaired and replaced.

Divorce after years. In some middle and upper income
families one spouse stays home to raise the children,
keep house, and take care of the others family needs,
while the other goes to the job every day. It used to be
that the wife stayed home, but its often the husband
nowadays. And it used to be very common, but is less
so now that many women choose not to be dependent
on their husbands, or to have careers of their own and
raise children together too. In a divorce after many
years, the stay-at-home spouse used to be penalized.
At retirement age theyd be out their fair share of the
Social Security income their spouse earned during
their marriage. Stay married, you and your spouse
spend all your retirement incomes together. Divorce,
and the job-worker gets it all.
Only workers contribute. Only a go-to-work spouse
contributes toward Social Security. Contributions
are mandatory deductions from every paycheck.
Employers match those contributions. An account, so
to speak, builds in each employees name on paper
at the Social Security Administration. You cant
withdraw that money, but based on how many quarter-
years youve worked in your lifetime and the total
contributions made in your name before you retire,
youll receive a monthly Social Security retirement
check for the rest of your life. Its the U.S. way of
securing a retirement income for workers.
Hows it fair? In a Michigan divorce the judge
must make a fair award of marital property. Thats
usually a 50/50 split. Retirement plans are considered
marital property. So, one would think, Social
Security retirement income is marital property to
be split 50/50. And for many years divorce lawyers
depended on that reasoning, as did the states circuit
court judges. But one would now be wrong. Social
Security retirement income is a benet to which the
retired worker alone is entitled, says the Court of
Appeals in a recent decision. As such, no court can
order the Social Security Administration to split a
retirement check with an old spouse. And the court
has no other means to enforce an order that one party
must share his check with the other.
Take the case of James and Mary Biondo, who
married in 1964 and divorced in 2007. After 43
years, Mary had accrued much less in Social Security
benets than James. He had worked at Ford Motor
Company. The Biondos agreed to split their retirement
checks and the Judgment of Divorce required them
to equalize their retirement checks. But it seems that
James had an immediate change of heart. He refused
to forward Mary her share of his checks. (Maybe by
then there was a new Mrs. Biondo who didnt want
James to have to share with the old Mrs. Biondo? In
any event)
Mary went back to court. James argued that the
formula to split his social security with Mary violated
federal law, and that any order enforcing those terms
would be invalid. When the local court agreed with
Mary, James took it to the Michigan Court of Appeals.
There, James won that argument, but only sort of.
First, the Court of Appeals noted that section 407 of
the Social Security Act prohibits any state court from
ordering the assignment or transfer of any future
federal benet.
The Court saved Mary. But the Appeals Court would
not be fooled by James trickery. While it could not
order James to give Mary part of his social security
check, it could, and did, order a change to the division
of all of the Biondos other property. That division
was done taking into account that James was going
to receive a much greater social security retirement
income, and Mary ends up with most of their property.
James got to keep all of his social security, but he
didnt end up with much of anything else. Social
security benets inform the property division,
says the court. Or, how to get in the back door, what
wont t through the front.
