T h e S c i e n t i f i c - R e s e a r c h I n s t i t u t e of B u i l d i n g C e r a m i c s ( N I I S t r o i k e r a m i k a ) h a s c a r r i e d out a n u m b e r of r e s e a r c h p r o j e c t s c o n n e c t e d with d e s i g n i n g c o n t i n u o u s a u t o m a t e d c o n v e y e r l i n e s f o r p r o d u c i n g c e r a m i c t i l e s , b a s e d on r a p i d o n e - h i g h - f i r i n g c y c l e s . S u c h l i n e s a r e now w o r k i n g in m a n y f a c t o r i e s : K u c h i n s k , S I a v y a n s k , S v e r d l o v s k , M o s c o w , V o l g o g r a d , e t c . T h e b a s i c h e a t i n g unit f o r t h e s e l i n e s is the r o l l e r k i l n . The characteristics of e x i s t i n g r o l l e r k i l n s a r e g i v e n in T a b l e 1.

T h i s a r t i c l e g i v e s t h e r e s u l t s of a n i n v e s t i g a t i o n into t h e o p e r a t i o n of t h e s e k i l n s . T h e p r e s s u r e (or v a c u u m ) in the w o r k i n g c h a n n e l of r o l l e r kilns is 0 . 1 - 0 . 3 m m w a t e r . Such an a e r o d y n a m i c c y c l e s h o u l d be c o n s i d e r e d c o m p l e t e l y s a t i s f a c t o r y , s i n c e with t h e s e p r e s s u r e (vacuum) v a l u e s the e j e c t i o n of t h e c o m b u s t i o n p r o d u c t s o r the i n t a k e of a i r into the f i r i n g c h a n n e l is m i n i m a l . T h e c o m p o s i t i o n s of t h e g a s e s in r o l l e r k i l n s a r e g i v e n in T a b l e 2. T h e e x c e s s a i r in the p r e h e a t zone is 1 . 6 - 2 . 5 , and in the f i r i n g zone 1 . 1 - 1 . 4 . In s o m e c a s e s the g a s e s c o n t a i n CO (0.2%). A s a r e s u l t , d u r i n g the f i r i n g of f l o o r t i l e s m a d e f r o m r e d - i r o n - c o n t a i n i n g b o d i e s (for e x a m p l e , N i k i f o r o v c l a y s ) , and in the p r e s e n c e of c a r b o n m o n o x i d e in t h e f i r i n g zone, the s u r f a c e of the p r o d u c t s is f r e q u e n t l y s m o k y . I n s t e a d of t h e u s u a l r e d c o l o r , t h e p r o d u c t s a c q u i r e a d a r k - r e d o r b l a c k - r e d s h a d e . One of the b a s i c i t e m s of h e a t c o n s u m p t i o n in r o l l e r kilns i s the l o s s with t h e w a s t e g a s e s to the s u r r o u n d i n g s . In k i l n s e m p l o y e d f o r f i r i n g w a l l t i l e s the h e a t l o s s e s w i t h t h e w a s t e g a s e s r e a c h 31%. D u r ing t h e f i r i n g of t i l e s m a d e by c a s t i n g t h e r e is a n i n c r e a s e i n the c o n s u m p t i o n of h e a t f o r w a r m i n g up the t i l e s and the kiln f u r n i t u r e ( s l a b s ) , a s a r e s u l t of w h i c h the p r o p o r t i o n of h e a t l o s t with the w a s t e g a s e s is s o m e w h a t r e d u c e d . In the r o l l e r k i l n f i r s t c o n s t r u c t e d f o r the s i n g l e f i r i n g of w a l l t i l e s , the h e a t l o s s to the s u r r o u n d i n g s r e a c h e d 30%. T h e r a t i o Q p / B e h e m = ~t c h a r a c t e r i z e s the t h e r m a l e f f i c i e n c y of the f u r n a c e a s a h e a t i n g i n s t a l l a t i o n . In c o n t r a s t to the t e c h n o l o g i c a l e f f i c i e n e y , the t h e r m a l e f f i c i e n c y of t h e kiln t a k e s into a c c o u n t a l s o the c o n s u m p t i o n of h e a t f o r w a r m i n g up the k i l n f u r n i t u r e , and in c o n n e c t i o n with t h i s is i n d e p e n d e n t of the r a t i o of the w e i g h t of k i l n f u r n i t u r e and p r o d u e t s and h a s p r a c t i c a l l y the s a m e v a l u e f o r f i r i n g v a r i o u s t y p e s of t i l e s in t u n n e l k i l n s . The t h e r m a l e f f i c i e n c y of t u n n e l kilns d u r i n g the f i r i n g of c e r a m i c t i l e s is u s u a l l y 50%. F r o m the e q u a t i o n s f o r t h e t h e r m a l b a l a n c e s it f o l l o w s t h a t BchemJ Qp qtot -Op QP --Qp ~t Qp 1 ~lt 1.

C o m p a r a t i v e d a t a f o r the t h e r m a l b a l a n c e f a c t o r s u n d e r e x a m i n a t i o n f o r tunnel and r o l l e r k i l n s a r e g i v e n in T a b l e 4. A s we s e e , the a c h i e v e d r e d u c t i o n in fuel c o n s u m p t i o n in r o l l e r k i l n s owing to the e x c l u s i o n of the n e e d f o r c a r s and r e f r a c t o r y kiln f u r n i t u r e e n s u r e s a s u b s t a n t i a l fuel s a v i n g . The d a t a g i v e n in T a b l e 4 w e r e o b t a i n e d f o r c o n d i t i o n s of the s a m e output of a c c e p t a b l e p r o d u c t i o n in c o m p a r a b l e f u r n a c e s . Since the output of a c c e p t a b l e p r o d u c t i o n in r o l l e r k i l n s is m u c h g r e a t e r t h a n in t u n n e l k i l n s , t h e a c t u a l fuel s a v i n g with r e s p e c t to a c c e p t a b l e p r o d u c t i o n in a n u m b e r of c a s e s e x c e e d s 50%. T h u s , e x p e r i e n c e with the o p e r a t i o n of r o l l e r kilns c o n f i r m e d t h e i r w o r k i n g c a p a c i t y and high t e c h nico-economic factors. A t p r e s e n t w o r k is b e i n g done to a c h i e v e f u r t h e r i m p r o v e m e n t s in t h e s e k i l n s , to d e s i g n new c o m p o n e n t s , i n c l u d i n g m u f f l e s , and to i n c r e a s e the output b y e m p l o y i n g v a r i o u s t y p e s of f u e l .
