THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF ORCH
IDS
NEW EDITOR Graham Hammond who has been the instigator and publisher of our great monthly magazine has resigned to pursue his other commitments. Graham has put untold hours into making this magazine the informative and fun read that it has become . We cannot thank him enough for all of the work and imagination that he has willingly put into this publication for our benefit and the enjoyment of others who may read it. I have elected to do the job and I hope with the help of Graham I will be able to produce something similar In the future. The prospect is terrifying at the moment but Graham assures me that it will all come together in the end. The Hervey Bay Orchid Society Inc. Thank Graham very much for the his past endeavours and I hope that I can produce something close to it . Wish me luck. NOELA LINDGREN
ORCHIDFEST BUS TRIP On Saturday 12th June the members boarded a bus at 6am and travelled to the Orchidfest at Kawana. We stopped for a pitt stop at Matildas and arrived at our destination mid morning. The hall was completely full with displays and vendors and a huge amount of people all trying to buy some of the wonderful orchids on sale Hervey Bay had provided a small display but because of the distance involved it was not possible to put on our usual large exhibition. One of the highlights of the day was meeting our old friend and member Joyce Rummell. Joyce was an active member of our society for many years until it became necessary for her to relocate closer to her family. Joyce is also a very accomplished artist and had one frrst prize in the art competition with her painting of an Encyclia. We all had a very productive day and managed to fill up the bottom of the bus with plants as we always seem to do. We arrived home about 6pm. And all thanked the driver Brett, who is getting quite used to our excursions having driven us on several occasions. Hervey Bay Display At Orchidfest.
Brassavolas are star shaped Orchids that come from Central America. Named after a Venetian botanist, Dr. Angelo Brassavolo, these Orchids carry a large decorated lip as part of their flower structure. Flowers range from 1 to 5 inches in diameter, and are usually white to yellow with brown markings. Brassavolas can be grown in the home but are more often grown in greenhouses outside, in the home, or under lights.
6 Lady of the Night Orchid (Brassavola nodosa) As might be expected, the large outcroppings of volcanic rocks along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica are good places to find crabs, limpets, and other shoreline creatures, but amazingly, these outcroppings are also good places to find orchids. I found the large clump of Lady of the Night Orchids (Brassavola nodosa) below growing on the outcropping of wave-splashed volcanic rocks in the above photo. These white-flowered orchids are common in Costa Rica at low elevations along the Pacific coast, and they grow either as an epiphyte (on another living plant like a tree or palm) or as a lithophyte (on a rock) such as these. Lady of the Night Orchids have showy white and pale green flowers that become delightfully fragrant at night. Their green leaves are long, narrow, and fleshy. Orchid flowers have their petals and sepals (the usually green outer parts of the flower) in groups of threes. With Lady of the Night Orchids, the three petals are the large, white central lipped petal and the two green, horizontal petals. The topmost upright "petal" and the bottom two "petals" are actually the three green sepals.
8 In Madagascar Joseph a park ranger collects orchids and relocates them to a park around a lake, this one was out in flower many were not. A small area with many different species to see, they are lovingly looked after, many tourists visit here and Joseph is very willing to share his knowledge.
Sth. Africa at Duckitts nursery cymbidiums are grown, they cover a huge area, the pots sit on stones on the ground watered and fed by drippers, these plants provide the cut flowers for the flower markets.
One of the many Bulbophyllums growing naturally in the bush, sadly we missed seeing it in flower. They are plentiful and not hard to find, They grew in filtered light provided by the canopy of trees, if a piece fell it was quite happy to go on growing where it landed. Most of the bulbophyllums were accompanied with mosses and lychens .
ORCHIDS OF MADAGASCA
A Madagascar Bulbophyllum growing naturally in the bush showing the bracts where it flowers from. The Eulophiella roemeleiana grows only in a pandanus palm, it is thought that there are 300 left growing in the wild, with less than 100 people in the world have had the privilege of seeing it in flower. It is endemic to Madagascar and requires hot, moist conditions, we saw it in a valley.
CYMBIDIELLA

This photo gives you some idea of just how big Duckitts nursery is, it is reportedly large enough to cover 18 football fields. The largest producer of cymbidium cut flowers, in Sth. Africa just out side of Cape Town. Repotting occurs when there is insufficient new growth.

Disas grow in central and southern Africa, in there natural home they grow along stream banks and in other wet areas, a little cooler than here. They are very colourful range from white, cream, yellow, orange, pink to red. This one is Disa uniflora. In Sth. Africa they are used as gifts instead of a bunch of flowers, the flowers last a long time and have a pleasant perfume.

17 Bring to boil and decant into prepared jars for sterilising. Sterilise complete jars with lids for 15 minutes in pressure cooker. Seed may be sown as "green pod", that is before the pod fully matures and splits open. In this case, the seed is sterile and can be sown directly into the flask. A pod which has ripened and split (dry pod) is immediately contaminated by fungal spores which are ever preset in natural air and must be sterilised in a suitable solution for 10 to 15 minutes before sowing. A 10% solution in water of Snow White (Sodium Hypochloride) is an effective sterilising agent. When sowing seed or transferring plants in your sterile case, everything introduced into that area must be sterilised and a 20% to 25% Snow White solution will accomplish this. If possible, use a different set of intruments for each flask. This ensures that if an instrument has not be sterilised properly and contaminates a flask, only that flask will be ruined, not the whole batch. With care and thought in maintaining a sterile atmosphere, you will indeed find "flasking is easy". Alan Robinson
FLASKING ORCHIDS
The number of questions on seed propagation and flasking prompted Graham to ask for some of the details to be printed in the bulletin for those who wish to experiment. Flasking can be a costly operation or, with a bit of commonsense and ingenuity, a sterile area can be produced with very little cost at all. The flasking medium can be purchased if required from suppliers who advertise in "Orchids Australia" or "Australian Orchid Review" and cost $9.00 to $8.00 for a pack sufficient to make 1 litre of medium. This contains agar (the jelly base), sugar and the minerals and trace elements necessary. Manana must be added. A suitable medium can be made up using one of the foliac fertilisers in your garden shed and my experience has obtained best results from Aqua Feed. Add the fertiliser at the recommended strength specified by the fertiliser. ie. if the fertiliser recommends 1 spoon per litre, add 1 spoon to a litre of flasking medium. To make 1 litre of medium:1 litre demineralised water
1 level tablespoon (9 gms) Agar AFTER READING THIS ARTICLE IN THE BRIS(from Health Food Shop) BANE ORCHID SOCIETY INC. NEWS LETTER, AND 1 level tablespoon (20 gms) sugar HOW THEY HAVE EXPLAINED IT SO SIMPLE ON

Orchid Profile - Dancing Ladies Among the easiest of orchids to grow, the "Dancing Ladies" are among the most popular. Members of the Oncidium family, the common name comes from the shape of the flower which resembles a lady with her arms outstretched on the top with a skirt-shaped lip below. See if you can see the resemblance in this picture of Oncidium Grower Ramsey. With a slight breeze moving the blossoms, it looks like there is a whole troupe of dancers. Among the easy-to-grow yellow Oncidiums, Grower Ramsey and Sweet Sugar are cultivars you should consider. Look for varieties with relatively short -- 18 inch or 45 centimetre -- inflorescences with multiple side branches. Some older varieties simply put out one long inflorescence with no branching and are difficult to control. They are also sometimes available in cream, light yellow and white flowered varieties. Another Dancing Lady is the ever-popular Sharry Baby one of the best selling Oncidiums of all time. The flowers are much smaller than the yellow varieties, although the shape is similar. The big selling point for Sharry Baby is the wonderful fragrance. It varies from chocolate to vanilla depending upon variety. They have many many blossoms and can perfume a whole room. It is often possible to find this variety at grocery stores, home improvement stores and florists in the Unites States. There are many similar red and white Oncidiums with similar growth habits that will put on a wonderful show for you with great fragrance. I have an Oncidium Rosy Sunset, from Parkside Orchids that is about to bloom on seven inflorescences and I expect at least a hundred tiny pink and red dancers. (Scroll down to find the specific plant.) This cultivar has more of a sweet floral fragrance than the chocolate of Sharry Baby. The Oncidiums which make up the "Dancing Lady" group are fairly easy to grow with the exception that they need good humidity. Weekly watering with a good orchid fertilizer is also recommended. A couple of hours of sun each day will keep them happy and once a week watering if grown in the home. Outside plants will need more water during the summer. It is easy to determine if they are getting enough water because the large flattish pseudobulbs will start to wrinkle. If this happens to your plant, water a bit more -- they will plump right back up. Burned or very light leaves will indicate too much light; dark green leaves indicate too little light. The leaf color should be a nice light green in order to give the plant enough to encourage blooming. The inflorescences will appear at the bottom of the new pseudobulbs from the inside of the leaf on both sides of the bulb. If you've treated your plant just right you should get two inflorescences from each new pseudobulb. They should be repotted every couple of years after flowering when the media begins to break down in the pots.

If my body were a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model. I've got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish and my paint job is getting a little dull ... But that's not the worst of it. My headlights are out of focus and it's especially hard to see things up close. My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things even in the best of weather. My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins. It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed. My fuel rate burns inefficiently. But here's the worst of it .Almost every time I sneeze, cough or sputer either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires.
Something to ponder. An old man, a boy & a donkey were going to town. The boy rode on the donkey & the old man walked. As they went along they passed some people who remarked it was a shame the old man was walking and the boy was riding. The man and boy thought maybe the critics were right, so they changed positions. Then, later, they passed some people who remarked, 'What a shame, he makes that little boy walk.' So they then decided they'd both walk! Soon they passed some more people who thought they were stupid to walk when they had a decent donkey to ride. So, they both rode the donkey. Now they passed some people who shamed them by saying how awful to put such a load on a poor donkey. The boy and man figured they were probably right, so they decide to carry the donkey. As they crossed a bridge, they lost their grip on the animal and he fell into the river and drowned. The moral of the story? If you try to pleaseOF THE MIGHTY SEAa** THE POWER everyone, you can kiss your goodbye!
