History of Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur

Barangay Taleb is located along the National Highway 8 kilometers away from the Poblacion. It is originally a part of barangay Paing, but due to the wide territorial jurisdiction of barangay Paing the residence of the area petitioned that it be separated because of the inadequate supervision and governance from its mother barangay. Taleb is an Ilokano word that means Wall. The name Taleb was taken from the geographic location of the barangay, because it is surrounded by hills, it served as the wall of the barangay from the natural calamities thus called Taleb not until RA3590 was enacted that Taleb was created as a regular barangay. Barangay Taleb is an agricultural barangay. The main crops are rice and corn and farmers harvest twice a year. Other source of income is the gathering of firewood and making of charcoal. Residents near the hilly portion of the area are well benefited by this kind of industry. All in all, the barangay is blessed with earths natural wealth. The water that supplies the other barangay within the national high way as well as the municipality of Vigan comes from the vicinity of the barangay. The Victoria National Park and the Caniaw Reforestation Project that was establish in 1962, is also located in the territorial jurisdiction of the barangay and there is also a vicariated parish and a cemetery within its area. The people in the area are also helpful and very cooperative that is why Barangay Taleb has developed into more developed community and it is now one of the best barangay of the municipality.

Shown in Table 1 is the age and sex ratio of the residents in Barangay Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur. The greater number, 231(27.73%) of the male residents and 205(26.32%) of the female belongs to the age bracket 25 to 45 years old, while the least 22(2.64%) of the male residents belong to the age bracket 0 to 1 year old and 28(3.59%) of the female residents belong to 0 to 1year old.

As a whole, most of the residents, 436(27.05%) belong to 25 to 45 age bracket. The figure implies that most of the residents in Brangay Taleb belong to the middle adulthood stage which means that there are less dependent members of the population.

Table 2 presents the type of religion in which the residents in Barangay Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur are affiliated to.

There are 1,522(94.42%) of the residents who are Roman Catholic; Baptist with 33(2.05%); Jehovahs Witness, 19(1.18%); Born Again, 15(.93%); Pentecost, nine(0.56%); Methodist, eight(0.5%); and, Iglesia ni Cristo, six(.37%) The figure implies that most of the residents are Roman Catholic which could mean that this type of religion is being passed by from one generation to another.

Table 3 presents the civil status of the 1,089 residents in Brgy. Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur who are 15 years and above. There are 732(67.22%) who are married and 357(32.78%) are single The figure could imply that majority of the residents are married.

Table 4 presents the educational attainment among 7 years old and above of the residents in Brgy. Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur. There are 290(21.29%) residents who finished elementary level; 225(16.45%), elementary graduate; 238 (17.39%), high school level; 251(18.35&), high school graduate; 135(9.86%), college level; 189(13.82%), college graduate; and, one (0.07%) each for doctoral graduate, doctoral level and MA level. The findings imply elementary level. that most of the residents obtained

Shown in Table 15 is the occupation of the residents in Brgy. Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur. There are 507(51.95%) residents who are non-professional workers; and, 67(6.86%) did not specify their occupation. This only implies that most of the residents are not professional workers such as farmers, vendors, tricycle driver, carpenter and labourer.

Table 6 shows the family monthly income of the residents in Brgy. Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur. There are 214 (50.59%) families with a family income ranging from 5,000 and below; 82(19.39%), 5001 to 10,000; 61(14.42%) did not specify their monthly income; 25 (5.91%), 20, 001 and above; 22 (5.2%), 10,001 to 15,000; 12(2.84%), 15, 001 to 20, 000; 6(1.42%), with no income at all as claimed ; and, one (0.24%) receiving income through pension.

The result implies that the average monthly income of most families in Brgy. Taleb is 5,000 and below. But despite of the low income, they can still seek health care services.

Presented in table 7 is the person who attended to the 0-5 children during their delivery. One hundred fourteen (54.29%) children were delivered by a midwife; 85(40.48%), doctor; seven (3.33%) delivered by a hilot; three

(1.43%) did not specify; and, only one (0.48%) child was delivered by a nurse. The finding implies that most of the 0-5 children were delivered by midwife which means that the residents prefer to be attended by a health care professional for safety reasons.

Table 8 shows the immunization status of 0-5 years old children in barangay Taleb, Bantay Ilocos Sur. There are 163(77.62%) 0-5 children who are completely immunized; 36(17.14%), ongoing; 9(4.29%) with incomplete immunization status; one(0.48%) who is not yet immunized; and one (0.48%) is with parents who have no idea whether the child has been immunized or not. The findings imply that majority of children ages 0-5 are completely immunized, which means that the residents in Barangay Taleb is aware of the importance of immunization.

Table 9 shows the presence of immunization card of 0-5 children. One hundred sixty two (91.43%) 0-5 children have an immunization card; 13 (6.19%) with parents who have no idea whether the child has been issued an immunization card or not; and, five (2.38%) has no immunization card. The findings imply that majority of the children 0-5 years old have an immunization card, which manifest that they have been to the health care centers for immunization as well as baby check up.

Shown in table 10 is the age at first pregnancy of the 211 female married at productive age (15-45) in Taleb, st Ilocos Sur. There are 80 (37.91%) female married whose age at first pregnancy ranges from 21-25 years old; 66 (31.28%), 15-20 years; 35 (16.59 %), 26-30 years; 16 (7.58%), 31-40 years; 11 (5.21%), have not

been pregnant; and, three (1.42 %) female married whose age at first pregnancy ranges from 41-45 years old. The findings imply that most of the female married had their first pregnancy at the age ranges from 21-25 years old which is safe for them to have their pregnancy.

Shown in table 11 is the number of children of married women at reproductive age (15-45 y/o) in Barangay Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur. Most of the 211 married women at reproductive age (62 or 29.38%) have one child: 56 (26.54 %) have two children; 33(15.64%), three children; 27 (12.8%), four children; 11(%.21%), five children; 10 women (4.74%) dont have any child; four mothers each (4 or 1.9%) have six and seven children; two (2 or 0.95%), eight children; and, one (1 or 0.47%) mother each has nine and ten children.

Table 12 shows the number of miscarriage as claimed by the married women ages 15-45 years old in Barangay Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur. Out of 211 married women ages 15-45 years old; 178 (84.36%) did not experience any miscarriage during their pregnancy period. A total of 20(9.48%) go through it once, eight (8 or 3.79%) married women at reproductive age experienced it thrice; and five (5 or 2.37%) women go through it twice. This implies that most married women ages 15-45 years old do not experienced any miscarriage which means that they do their best to take care of their pregnancy and avoid any harmful situations which can lead to miscarriage. This also implies that not all female married at reproductive age have regular pre-natal check-ups and perhaps does not know the importance of such.

Table13 shows the breastfeeding status among 0-3 year old children in Barangay Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur. Out of 110 mothers, 95(86.36%) prefers breastfeeding their children and only 15 mothers (13.64%) opt not to breastfed their children. The findings imply that most of the mothers in Barangay Taleb prefers breastfeeding their 0-3 year old child. This shows that most mothers in Brgy, Taleb believes that breastfeeding is a healthy practice. This could help them in rising a healthy child for breast milk is a rich source of vitamins and minerals.

Table 14 shows when breastfeeding stopped among children 0-3 year old of Barangay Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur. The greatest number of babies, 50 (52.63%) shows that they are still being breastfed; 24 (25.26%), stopped being breastfed at age 1-2 years; 11 (11.58%), 1-6 months of age; six (6 or 6.32%), 7-11 months; three (3 or 3.16%) has no response; and, one (1 or 1.1%) stopped being breastfed at the age of 3 years old.

This implies that most of the children in Barangay Taleb are still being breastfed which shows that mothers have knowledge on the advantages/benefits of breastfeeding.

Table 15 presents the reason for not breastfeeding among mothers in Brgy. Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur. There are six (6 or 40%) mothers who claimed that their reason of not breastfeeding is no milk production; three (3 or 20%) mothers are busy on their own work; three (3 or 20%) said that its their own choice; one (1 or 6.67%) mother verbalized that her child is growing up, one (1 or 6.67%) mother with heart disease and one (1 or 6.67%) mother doesnt have any idea on the importance of breastfeeding. The findings imply that they dont have enough knowledge on the benefits of breast feeding and they have lack of knowledge on how to stimulate the production of breast milk.

Table 16 shows the food given to the babies by the mothers in Brgy. Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur after breastfeeding them. Thirty four respondents (34 or 25.95%) said that they give rice; 30 (22.9%), infant formula; 15 (11.45%) give saba to their babies; 12 (9.2%), kamote; seven (7 or 5.34%), karabasa; six (6 or 4.58%) did not answer the question; five (5 or 3.81%), AM/segget; three (3 or 2.29%), each for cerelac, crackers and breast feeding-ongoing; and one (1 or 0.76 %), each for milo and noodles.

Table 17 shows the number of family method used by married couples at reproductive age in Brgy. Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur. One hundred two (102 or 48.34%), do not use any family method; 70 (33.18%) women take pills; 15 (7.11%) women undergone ligation; 10 (4.74%) uses injectible; five (5 or 2.37%) uses withdrawal method; four (4 or 1.9%) couples practice abstinence; three (3 or 1.42%), condom; and, two (2 or 0.95%) uses rhythm as their family method. The finding implies that most married couples at reproductive age prefer not to use any family planning method. This also denotes that they do not know the importance of family planning method for the welfare of their family and whole community.

Table 18 shows if religion affects the decision of the MWRA regarding the use of family planning method in Brgy. Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur. One hundred sixty six (166 or 78.67%) married women at reproductive age (MWRA) claimed that their religion do not affect their decision in the choice of family planning method; 38 (18 01%) did not respond; and, seven (7 or 3.32%) agreed that their religion affect their decision in the choice of family planning method used. This implies that the religion of the majority of the MWRAs do not affect their choice of family planning method.

Shown in Table 19 is the family planning method that married couples at reproductive age want to know in Brgy. Taleb, Bantay. One hundred sixty seven (167 or 79.15%) answered none; and, one (1 or 47%) answered condom and IUD respectively. Knowing about family planning methods may not be applicable for five (5 or 2.37%) couples since two of them are single mothers, while, the three are livein-partners. The figures imply that majority of the couples are not interested to know about family planning method.

Table 20 presents the type of dwelling structure in Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur. Two hundred twenty two (222 or 67.48%) of the households are of heavy dwelling structure; 82(24.92%), medium dwelling structure; and, 25(7.6%) of the households are of light dwelling structure. The figures could indicate that the majority of the households are of heavy dwelling structure.

The findings imply that most of the lot and house in Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur are owned by the residents.

There are 214(43.23%) families who store their food in the refrigerator; 114(23.03%), in covered plate; 93(18.79%), cabinets; 50(10.10%), basket; 11(2.22%), Tupperware; 3(0.61%), casserole; 2(0.40%), microwave oven; 1(0.20%), metal or plastic container; while, five (1.01%) families do not store their food. The finding implies that the majority of the families prefer to store their food in the refrigerator because its temperature could help preserve their food.

There are 144 (35.38%) families whose source of drinking water is from the NAWASA; 100 (24.57%), spring; 60 (14.74%), deep well; 55(13.54%) water pump 36(8.85%), mineral water; nine (2.21%), electric pump; two (0.49%) shallow dug well; and, one (0.25%) have purified water for drinking. The findings imply that most of the families uses deep well, shallow dug well and water pump as their source of drinking water which could be contaminated with disease causing microorganism.

There are 202(45.50%) families who are storing their water in a water jug; 86(19.37%), bottle; 77(17.34%), pitcher; 44(9.91%), water dispenser; 11(2.27%), gallon; ten (2.25%), pale; seven (1.51%), none (direct from the faucet); two (0.45%), damili and tumbler respect0ively; and, one(0.23%), caramba, glass and drum respectively. The findings could mean that some families are resourceful because they are using recyclable thing like bottles but they may not be aware of the possible consequences/effects of over using water bottles on ones health.

Out of 660 families, 136 (20.61%) prefers any foods to eat; 123 (18.64%) have no choice of food; 122 (18.48%) prefers nutritious foods; 98 (14.85%), vegetables; 65 (9.85%), meat; 48 (7.27%), fish; 36(5.45%), fruits; 27 (4.09%), chicken; two(0.30%), crackers; and, one (0.15%) prefers Quacker Oats, salty foods and processed foods respectively.

The findings could imply that most of the families in Barangay Taleb, Bantay, Ilocos Sur prefers any foods to eat, while Quacker Oats, salty foods and processed foods are the least preferred foods among the families.

The greater number, 173(40.61%), do not have any beliefs and practices on management and care during pregnancy and birth; 72(16.90%) shows the beliefs and practices of eating nutritious foods; and praying which obtained the least number (one or 0.23%). This implies that most of the MWRA dont have enough practices on how to manage and care for these infants and during pregnancy while some believe that eating nutritious foods and praying can help in the management and care during pregnancy and birth.
