the fashionable Arts and Crafts style. However, elements of the 10-acre garden fell into disrepair during the 1950s, and 10 years ago the National Trust set itself a target to recreate Hidcote as Johnston planned it. Head gardener at Hidcote, Glyn Jones, who led the team working on the project,

says, This has been a huge undertaking but one that were very proud of. We really feel that we have managed to bring Johnstons vision back to life. Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust

Badger vaccination trial

Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust is making history by putting its money where its mouth is and becoming the first ever private organisation in the UK to vaccinate badgers against bovine tuberculosis (bTB) on its own land. Whilst the Trust accepts that badgers are part of the wildlife reservoir of bTB and a disease vector, it does not believe that culling badgers is the bTB panacea. Vaccination, biosecurity and accurate testing procedures offer the most complete and serious animal disease problem. The Trust has paid for staff to be specially trained to vaccinate badgers against bovine TB across its nature reserves in the Stroud Valleys. Were really grateful to Cotswold and the BMW Group for their support, say Harriet and Jamie. Its tough trying to qualify for an Olympic team place and its a big help knowing that they are behind us, helping to raise awareness. Every three years the annual Worcester Festival is extended to incorporate the prestigious Three Choirs Festival, and 2011 is one such year. Tracy Spiers looks forward to this extraordinary celebration
incorporate the Worcester Three Choirs Festival, the CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival, Worcester Music Festival , a host of Battle of Worcester events as well as marching bands, street theatre, exhibitions and workshops. This is the biggest and best Worcester Festival ever - there are already 544 events registered and they are still coming in. Last year over 200,000 people saw an event and we are expecting to easily exceed that figure this year, exclaims Festival Director Chris Jaeger. There will be four Saturdays of bands and activities in the High Street, four Sundays of Artists Markets on the riverside, 137 childrens events. There are 211 family events and 442 of the events are free, he adds. As I said, nothing just about this Festival. The infectious enthusiasm among those involved is the secret of its success. Relatively new, the festival only started in 2003 and has just grown in momentum as individuals, organisations and groups representing large cross-sections of the community have caught the vision and run with it so much so that the festival has become an integral part of Worcesters identity over the summer. It is organised and operated by Worcester Live, an independent company which runs both the Swan Theatre and Huntingdon Hall as well as The Ghost Walks of Worcester and the two-week annual outdoor Shakespeare at the Commandery event. Lorna Phillips says she has been amazed at how well it has been received. It is incredible to see how different strands of the community come on board with the festival and

TS described as an exciting extravaganza of fun, frolics and celebration of community life. But even these words dont capture the sheer enormity of Worcester Festival. Organisers claim it is not a music festival, nor indeed an arts festival (although it does contain elements of both), but just a festival. They must jest when they say just. Theres nothing just about it. For the whole summer, kicking off on Saturday, August 6 and ending with a spectacular finale fireworks display on Monday, August 29, festival fever runs through every vein of this citys being. And this year its spread even further to
114 A u g u s t 2 011

register their event, and the result really is that anyone can find an event or activity theyd like to be at no matter what their age or interests. The only problem those visiting Worcester during August will encounter is choosing which one to see. Under the main festival umbrella are mini ones such as week-long Flower Festival Trail a one-day Flower Festival, from Saturday August 6-13, or the sixth Worcester City Flower Show on August 6 in Gheluvelt Park; Robots Family Trail, St Richards Hospice Duck Race, Battle of Worcester City Walks, Childrens Ghost Walks or the week-long celebration of Douglas Adams, an English writer and dramatist, best known as the author of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. These are only but a few. The event also incorporates a free open day at Worcester Porcelain Museum on Wednesday, August 17, which celebrates the iconic Royal Worcester which dates back to the 18th century and is renowned for its rich heritage and classically English collections of porcelain. Every three years the annual Worcester Festival is extended to incorporate the prestigious Three Choirs Festival. Music has had a longassociation with Worcester, where one of the most famous musical sons Edward Elgar was born. Largely selftaught, Elgar followed his vocation to compose, taking great inspiration from

the surrounding countryside, despite initially struggling to gain recognition for his outstanding musical talent in class-conscious Victorian and Edwardian society. The Three Choirs Festival, Europes oldest classical choral music festival rotates annually between the cities of Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester. This year its Worcesters turn. Theres no doubt it has a huge impact on the citys profile and economy. Thousands of music-lovers fill Worcesters hotels and B&Bs and thus boost summer retail trading as they enjoy what is considered one of the worlds greatest festivals of choral music. This year is bittersweet for Adrian Lucas as it is his final year as Artistic Director of the Worcester Three Choirs Festival. Its going to be an amazing week, though inevitably tinged with a little sadness for myself. I shall miss being at the centre of such a great institution and having the luxury of being able to plan the programme for such a great set of international artists. I hope that my five home festivals will have brought something new to this August event, whether musical or more on the social side. I hope that Three Choirs continues to retain its position as a great musical event on the world stage, he says. Im looking forward to so much during the Festival its hard to pin down specifics. Certainly it is a great honour to have Sir Andrew Davis

coming back here after so many years, especially to conduct Elgars Caractacus. Our marking of the ten years that have passed since the tragic events of 9/11 will inevitably bring a lot of interest, and the Opera night at the end of the week will break new ground. Theres something here for everyone! he exclaims. Worcester Festival is indeed a plethora of festivals rolled into one, but one shouldnt forget that Worcester itself is a pull for crowds. Embark on a city walk and its secrets will be unveiled. Events that occurred in and around the city some 360 years ago helped change the historical, political and social landscape of England, the USA and other countries. Although ancient in history, its modern outlook ensures it thrives in the 21st century. Rachael Mitchell, general manager of the Whitehouse Hotel and a member of Worcester Tourism Association suggests it is events like Worcester Festival which helps keep business thriving. Whilst we tend to find that the majority of our residents do not choose to come to Worcester specifically for the festival, they always comment on the vitality of the city during this time and our overseas guests who stay throughout the year look forward to this time as they say it makes the city a more fun and vibrant place to visit, she states. When the Three Choirs is held in Worcester, the hotel receives enquiries from visitors around the world and we are particularly busy this August as a result. Worcester is certainly one city which will embrace the summer in true British style. Whether visitors and local people don Wellington boots or sun hats, Festival-mania is fever pitch. To sum up in the words of Worcester Festivals mission statement, it is a celebration of life, and of Worcester and its people.
