Indian Standard

CLASSIFICATION AND MATRIX FOR VARIOUS CATEGORIES OF HOSPITALS

0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 20 July 1988, after the draft finalized by the Hospital Planning Sectional Committee had been approved by the Consumer Products and Medical Instruments Divison Council. 0.2 The functional programme is the basic need for planning of any category of hospitals. The matrix which has been drawn in the standard forms the basis for starting the planning of hospitals according to the functions. Valuable guidance has been rendered in the preparation of this matrix by Dr A. K. Nagpal, Managing Partner of Hospital Designs and Systems, New Delhi.

1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard specifies classification and matrix for five catagories of hospitals. It includes the classification according to the functions in alphabetical order with code number, matrix and organizational classification. 2. FUNCTIONAL CLASSIFICATION, CODE NUMBER AND MATRIX 2.1 The functional classification in alphabetical order along with code number and matrix is given
TABLE 1

in Table 1. The first letter of the code number denotes the group of services, second and third denotes the discipline and fourth the sub-discipline. Matrix is given for 5 categories of hospitals, that is, for 30, 100, 250, 500 ( teaching and nonteaching ) and 750 ( teaching and non-teaching ) bedded hospitals. In case where X is marked in the matrix, it means the requirement should exist and where 0 is marked, means the requirement is optional.
