Cadiz took in the members of parliament that drafted and enacted the first liberal constitution of our history. This is the monument which won a contest to commemorate the first centenary of La Pepa. It is located in Plaza de Espaa Square, which is an emblematic green area in Cadiz. The monument to the Cadiz Parliament is full of symbols that represent the Spanish Parliament. It consists of two bronze statues which stand for peace and war and a central pillar where the text of the 1812 constitution is written. This is the building that used to defend the city from foreign enemies, who came from Holland, France and England. This is the building that you can see in San Juan de Dios Square, which is near the port. This is the place where the Magna Carta was signed. It held 1478 sessions, which people could attend. This was the place where the Constitution was written. This is the building which people call the new cathedral.

1.a. The sentences in bold type are called relative clauses and they include the basic elements any sentence in English has: subject, verb (and complements). Identify the verbs with a blue underline and the subjects with a red one. 1.b. Relative clauses form part of other sentences and they provide additional information about an element in that sentence, which precedes the relative clause. This element (called antecedent) is underlined in the examples above. Classify the antecedents above in the table below:

Relative sentences are separated from the main sentence by a coma if the antecedent is already defined and needs no further information for the sentence to be complete. In these cases, that is never used and the relative pronoun can never be omitted. Relative clauses that define the antecedent have no comas and then, we can omit the relative pronoun as long as it is not the subject of the relative clause.

During your school trip to Cadiz you will play the role of tourist guides, and thus, you will show and explain to your classmates some of the most significant monuments and historical events in the city.
