Smoking ban proposal targets outdoors

Cameron Smith Gazette staFF The Middlesex-London Health Unit is fuming about outdoor smoking in London, and the Community Service Committee has just given them their support in a proposed ban. The recommendation suggests a ban on smoking in places ranging from bar patios to public parks and recreation facilities, and some hospitality service owners are not particularly happy about it. According to Ron Scarfone, general manager for the pub Joe Kools, current establishments have designated small exclusive areas to smokers to keep them from disturbing other patrons. To remove these areas may dissuade customers from returning to the enterprise, which would be especially harmful during the summer months when the large student population vacates the city. Scarfone also discussed the challenges for enforcing the proposed ban, reflecting on where the money would come from to hire bylaw officers. Another point Scarfone raised was the question of tal scan, weve recommended a complete smoking ban in parks, playgrounds and recreational playing fields, Stobo explained. Other reasons include reducing the instances of tobacco consumption among youths and the impact of second-hand smoke. The evidence is quite clear that there is no safe level of secondhand smoke, regardless of whether youre indoors or outdoors, Stobo said. These kinds of restrictions help people quit, and also help to prevent young people from smoking. Stobo explained that by preventing people from smoking in front of areas like arenas, it would reduce young peoples exposure to cigarettes, and hopefully decrease their propensity for tobacco consumption. These types of bylaws help to prevent tobacco use in young people, Stobo concluded. According to Stobo, though a ban on smoking may have a negative impact on hospitality services in London, the health benefits may well outweigh the concerns of the owners.

Huron happy
Kaleigh rogers multimedia direCtor If you hear shouts coming from Western Road, its probably just Huron celebrating. The affiliate school has plenty of reason to do so, as it ranked highly in satisfaction ratings published in this years Macleans student issue. In many categories, Huron ranked higher than main campus and other affiliates, including how likely students were to choose the same school again if they could start over. First-year Huron students answers to this question placed the school at 12th on the list, above the average and highest for all local universities. Obviously we were thrilled with what our students have to say about us, Stephen McClatchie, principal at Huron, said. Because this is a studentdriven survey, we do take it seriously. What it means is that were getting confirmation from our students that the Huron difference is making a difference in their lives. Parts of Macleans rankings are based on the National Survey of Student Engagement, an annual survey of students commissioned by participating post-secondary institutions. It asks first and upper-year students to rate various aspects of their experience, from academics to community feel, and provides schools with the results. Alexander McCormick, director of the NSSE, explained students are a valuable source of information for schools. We think they are the best informants, he said. Theres no better way to find out the extent to which students are exposed to and participate in effective practices than to simply ask them. The goal of the survey is to provide diagnostic results for the institution so they can find out whats working for their students and whats not, McCormick said. While students answers can give valued

who would be at faultbusinesses, event planners, or the individual for violating the potential law? These problems would all have to be worked out before any sort of ban could be implemented. Despite this, Linda Stobo, program manager for chronic disease prevention and tobacco control with the MLHU, maintains the city would benefit from a decrease in tobacco consumption. Emerging evidence in results

from some local public opinion surveys have demonstrated that the current level of protection provided by the Smoke-Free Ontario Act is not high enough for the Middlesex-London residents, Stobo explained. There is a public appetite for these kinds of further restrictions on smoking. According to Stobo, there is growing research to support the proposed ban. As a result of our environmen-

Brakes put on soph eligibility changes

aaron Zaltzman neWs editor Soph outrage has prevailed as the University Students Council announced Monday it would be delaying the recent decisions regarding changes to the Orientation program. The changes to soph eligibility, which disallowed students from sophing in a faculty other than their current one, will no longer be in place for the upcoming year, and will come into effect in 2013. Nicole DAlessandro, [vicepresident student events], and I voiced the concerns of students who came to sit down and speak with us, Andrew Forgione, president of the USC, explained. The compromise was made by the cochairs of [the Orientation Planning Committee] on behalf of the committee, with specific input from the USC and faculty deans. The news came as a mixed victory to those sophs who had voiced opposition to the changes. Im really satisfied that theyre not putting the change into effect for the upcoming Orientation Week, given that the timing for everything was so last minute, Ruth Culliton, a third-year Ivey student and former faculty soph, said. But I sort of wish they would revisit the changes made, because the fact that the changes are still in place for 2013 doesnt address a lot of the concerns that we had in the first place. Forgione emphasized the delay was in response to the timing of the changes, not the changes themselves. The announcement had come after applications for head soph positions were submitted, eliminating certain applicants overnight.

ruth Culliton,

One of the main changes made to the program was the rescinding of eligibility to Ivey students to be sophs. While this rule will not be in place next year, Chris Janssen, a third-year Ivey student who started an online petition to undo the

changes, said he would continue to fight them. Im still as passionate about this as I was before, and my going into my last year doesnt change that, Janssen explained. Im going to push this next year, and I think having the whole year gives a chance to voice our opinion, and to actually talk to first-year students during O-Week to see if we need Ivey students on the soph team. I think the board will realize that the changes were not a great ideafor now, its like the battle has been won, but the war is still going. According to Forgione, Janssen will have open ears to voice his concerns to next year. Since the implementation of this policy was delayed, this also leaves time for dialogue to be reopened anytime with students, Forgione said.

tobogganing not just for kids

The Western Engineering Toboggan Team has returned home from Calgary a few pounds heavier, having successfully reeled in five concrete-mounted awards at this years Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race at Canada Olympic Park. The race tradition began 38 years ago at the University of Calgary and other provincial colleges, and now features 19 competing schools from across Canada. According to Brad Coutu, team captain of WETT, their design this year was based off everyones favourite toboggan growing upthe GT Snowracer. However, unlike the traditional Snowracer, their toboggan had to be designed to carry five riders safely down the hill, and withstand a crash at up to 80 km/h. It also had to weigh less than 300 pounds and have a running surface made entirely of concrete. All in all, the competition was a great success for our team and an unbelievable experience, Coutu said. Westerns team took home awards for best concrete mix de-

sign, best concrete reinforcement design, best toboggan design, best technical exhibit and best technical report. We are still waiting for the final results to be tabulated, but are hoping for a top five finish overall, Coutu explained. Gloria Dickie

Science hits the airwaves

Watch out for Western Worlds, a new online radio show by Westerns Centre for Planetary Science and Exploration. The show will launch February 27 on the online radio station, Astronomy.FM. The show will consist of 30-minute interviews and discussions with engineers, researchers and educators engaged in planetary science or space exploration. In the past few years, planetary science has really grown in Canada, and CPSX is at the forefront of the expansion, John Moores, showrunner for Western Worlds, said. Though we are a relatively young organization, its never too early to reach out and share the excitement of exploring the planets with the public and others working in planetary science and exploration. Moore added he hopes Western Worlds will create a bigger name for the CPSX and engage the public beyond southwestern Ontario. AFM radio reaches over 20,000 English-speaking listeners a month in over 85 countries. They are currently the only 24-hour Internet radio station dedicated to astronomy and science. Western Worlds will air at 10 p.m. Mondays on AFM Radio. Taylor Rodrigues

dont text and drive

The Ontario Provincial Police are getting serious about distracted driving. Drivers who are talking on their cellphone, texting, or not paying attention should beware. The OPPs distracted driving campaign started last May, and this week marks the last installment of their initiative to improve road safety. However, according to Sergeant David Rektor, OPP western region media relations representative, Sadly, weve seen a number of people continue to drive distracted. In fact this year alone weve seen eight deaths attributed to drivers that are distracted. Texting while driving will earn you a distracted driving fine of $155, but dangerous drivers can also face a charge of careless driving, which faces fines of $400 to $2,000. So how can Western students avoid being fined? Dont text and drive and dont use the phone while driving, said Rektor. He points to Bluetooth as an exception to being on your cellphone. You can have your Bluetooth on, and we recommend that you do that. Itll be better if you pulled over to the side of the road, but we

Protest targets Canada Goose

Grass referendum growing

Cheryl Stone neWs Features editor Students are one step closer to having to foot the bill for the multipurpose fields. Last week, the finance standing committee voted to have the elections committee create a referendum question about a potential levy to improve the multipurpose fields outside of the Health Sciences Building. The question would then be on a ballot for students to vote on. According to Andrew Forgione, president of the University Students Council, a recent survey found the majority of students were in favour of paying some sort of fee to improve the fields. He said students indicated they would be willing to pay between one and eight dollars for the project. A lot of students also said they would not personally benefit from the project, but that it was a good idea in principle, Forgione explained. But not everyone on the committee thought a referendum would be a good idea. Im concerned this will set a bad precedent, Giampiero De Pasquale, president of the Huron University College Students Council, explained. The message were sending to the university is that students are willing to pay directly for something that is ultimately the responsibility of the university. He said he was concerned about other physical plant repairs students could be asked to pay for in the future. Or worse, will the university form their budget counting on it? Other councillors also expressed a concern about the precedent. I think we would be remiss if we set a precedent whereby the university would feel comfortable raising fees in order to subsidize costs that should already be covered by our current fees, Andrew Shaw, Arts and Humanities Students Council president, explained. However he said the decision should ultimately be left up to students. The survey results provided by Mr. Forgione clearly indicated that this is an issue students feel is relevant, Shaw explained of his yes vote. He also noted, however, he would be campaigning on the no side when the referendum was announced. Forgione also noted if Western didnt view the potential funds as enough to do the project with, the potential referendum could stop in its tracks. If Western believes that the data highlights a number that students would be willing to pay that is much less than what was asked for, then there would be no point in going forward.

Kuijpers explained the group chose the prominent location because it allowed them to reach out to both students and the public. I think most people just dont think about it, he said.

insight to well-received programming in post-secondary institutions, when it comes to amalgamated results like Macleanswhich chooses certain results from the NSSE for each school and ranks themits not always useful to compare, he said. The quality of the student experience actually varies a whole lot more within institutions than it does between institutions, he said. Even institutions that do comparatively well have relatively disengaged students, and we really encourage institutions to dig deeply in their own results to understand

who their disengaged students are and what they can do to improve the quality of their experience. At Huron, though, McClatchie said they could get direct feedback from their students outside of the survey as a result of their smaller size. In fact, he said this closeknit feeling and small size is what makes those students rank the school so highly. The huge difference for Huron is [] the individual attention. From the moment they apply to the moment they graduateand actually beyondwe know them as people. Theyre not just numbers for us. Students at Huron seem to agreefrom first-years to fourth-

Nine Silver demerits

richard raycraft Gazette staFF On Sunday, University Students Council presidential candidate Jon Silver was dealt nine out of a possible 10 demerit points for an infraction involving the use of Talbot College as a campaign space. These points are in addition to the previous four points he received last week for an unauthorized off-campus Vote Silver banner, bringing his total to 13. Candidates are required to obtain permission from the respective faculty council presidents before campaigning in faculty buildings. The violation occurred when Silver reportedly campaigned in the faculty of musics Talbot College without permission from the music faculty council president. We actually contacted the faculty president on the first day of elections and never heard back from her, Silver said. He maintains that very little campaigning was done, and that no campaign materials were issued at the event. It was a very fun, relaxed setting. It wasnt like we were handing out bag tags or anything. While Silver points out that he attempted every alternative to obtain permission to gain access to the building, he admits that the room was booked under the wrong pretense. A student at the faculty of music booked the room for a chamber rehearsal. Cindy Zhang, president of the Music Students Council, said that Silver requested to set up a booth in the music building, not hold a jam session in Talbot. Upon seeing the event taking place, Zhang questioned the faculty front desk, to which they replied a student had booked the room for a chamber rehearsal. I went back downstairs and quietly asked one of Jons campaign volunteers if we could talk. The individual grew curt and defensive. The individual did not shut the event down. The individual proceeded to imply my actions as snake-y, Zhang said in an e-mail. Silver says that he will appeal the decision. The appeal must go to the elections committee, who may require follow up information from the parties involved. Were going to appeal on the grounds that there was a miscommunication Silver said. I think that our claims are very reasonable, were being very clear, very transparent about everything were doing. The whole point of having bylaws is to ensure that the processes are fair so that every candidate has the same chance, so that students can make an informed decision, Silver continued. Were challenging this because we dont think this reflects that ultimate goal.

Opinions
Fighting against fur
Canada Goose parkas are a common sight at Western. Yesterday they drew the attention of animal rights activists, who held a protest just outside campus condemning the companys use of goose down and coyote fur in their jackets. For the majority of owners, the fur lining on the hood of Canada Goose jackets is unnecessary. We shouldnt be killing critters just for aesthetic value this is a trend, not a necessary evil. While Arctic explorers may need fur to keep their skin from freezing, students dont. However, animal products arent uselessthey do keep us warm, after all. Many animals are used in multiple ways. For example, cattle become leather and hamburgers, not just fancy trim. If society is going to kill animals, they shouldnt be wasteful of the byproducts. While we may not need these jackets, they are not the only clothing items made from animals. So why target Canada Goose? The jackets have become something of a status symbol, like a shiny new iPhone or a Starbucks cup. Meanwhile, leather products dont carry the same status connotations, and have become commonplace. Though its fairly common knowledge that the trim on the hoods comes from coyotes, its difficult to make the connection between the fluffy fur on our jackets and the suffering of animals. Fur makes these products luxurious, and the reality doesnt bother us when we head to the checkout. And even if there are a few owners out there who think the trim is synthetic, finding out the truth probably wont lead them to throw their expensive jackets away. Protests in general can be seen as ineffective, because people can easily turn a blind eye. If people choose to research and become passionate about an issue, they will on their own accordwhile this protest may encourage some students to do their research, it wont change the minds of the flocks of satisfied customers. Many of the tactics used to discourage people from buying fur are viewed as rude or plain crazy. The information which is already out there needs to be accessible, so people who choose to research this can find it. Some will choose to change their lifestyle and others wont. Some people are simply too comfortable to change their minds. Its up to them where to draw the line. The Gazette Editorial Board

News beginning to break conventions

wrath of mcGrath
Kaitlyn mcGrath oPinions editor For me, hearing about Whitney Houstons death on Saturday night was strange. Its not because Ive been a huge fan for years and have all of her albums actually, I probably only know two of her songs. And Im not going to be one of those bandwagon fans that suddenly realizes how much they idolize a singer only after they passed away. Ill admit, I was probably listening to the Spice Girls or some other 90s sensation band while Houston was in her prime. Its an awful shame that Houston who undoubtedly did have one of the best voices of her generationdied, but what I found most interesting was the way in which I, and I can only assume the majority of you, heard the news. Initially it was from several BlackBerry messenger status updates, which read RIP Whitney Houston, or something along those lines, that I found out. Instinctively, it seems, my next move was to check Twitter to confirm or refute these claims. And of course, my Twitter feed was full of tweets from friends and celebrities lamenting the icons death. Finally I saw a tweet from the New York Times reporting on her death, which gave me the utmost confirmation. But the crazy thing about this is that it was a friends status update that informed mea friend who is in no way associated with a news agency. This friend is just a regular university student who felt the need to report on this tragedy through her only necessary meansa smartphone. And I suddenly realized that on a number of occasions Ive become aware of major news via a Facebook update. Along with websites like Reddit and Twitter, social media has revolutionized how news is reported, and, to an extent, who is reporting it. Gone are the days when you would have to wait for the six oclock news to hear about current events. And if you missed that, you were stuck waiting for either the nightly news, or the newspaper in the morning. And considering how technology has progressed, it almost feels surreal that only 20 years ago this was the norm. Although I think there are many benefits of being able to acquire valuable information literally at our fingertips, I do see some red flags when it comes to this type of news breaking. Now brace yourselfIm going to use a sports example here, so if youre not a baseball fan, this example might go over your head. Back in December, the Toronto Blue Jays were making a bid for a highly touted Japanese pitcher named Yu Darvish. Essentially, the winning bid was kept secret aside from a few Major League Baseball senior officials, but that didnt stop Twitter from exploding with speculation and gossip that eventually crept into the territory of news. Blue Jays fans everywhere were rejoicing and practically lining up to buy Darvish jerseys before the official news was even released. Then came the heartbreaking announcement that it was in fact the Texas Rangers, rather than the Blue Jays, who had actually made the winning bid. It was a hard pill to swallow, but it was completely unnecessarythis was an example of social media speculation spinning out a control, creating news that was hearsay. This is an extreme example, but it should warrant some caution to all of us when it comes to believing everything that comes from unofficial sources. Dont get me wrongsocial media has been a valuable addition to the way we both report on and ingest news, but its important to be critical readers and to always try to decipher fact from fiction.

Re: The ecstasy of sex (Feb. 10, 2011) To the Editor: Overall, I was impressed with the Gazettes 2012 Sex Issue. However, there was one article, The Ecstasy of Sex, that I found incredibly disturbing. The piece explained the benefits of mixing drugs and sex for a heightened physical and emotional experience.

Chemical drugs have become mainstream at Western. And is this really surprising when our own student newspaper is encouraging experimentation? The unspoken truth is that young people have died from using ecstasy and MDMA recently, includingat leastone Western student. Katherine Horodnyk Gazette staFF After 13 years, Kittie continues to prove heavy metal music is not just for boys. This Friday, the band returns home to where their musical journey began. Kitties original members, Morgan and Mercedes Lander, spent the majority of their teenage years in London. The girls were naturally drawn toward metal music because it was the type of music adored by their parents. For me, I really dont see how or why it would be considered an anomaly for young girls to gravitate toward a certain type of music like metal, Morgan says. Along with her sister and two girlfriends, Morgan attempted to schedule gigs for Kittie. Unfortunately, not a lot of promoters, bar owners or those industry types would listen to 14-year-old kids, Morgan says. Morgan and her band faced their first obstacle to successto be acknowledged as credible musicians. Luckily, the Lander sisters had an incredibly supportive family. David Lander, their father, was was also Kitties manager. Whenever he could, he fought to have his daughters taken seriously. I think

its safe to say that without him, we wouldnt have gone as far or Kittie wouldnt have taken on a life of its own, Morgan adds. Over the past decade, Kittie has had its ups and downs. Guitarists and bassists seem to join and leave the band almost regularly. Apart from Morgan and Mercedes, the line-up has continually changed. Every time a member left, the Lander sisters were faced with the

decision of packing it in, or continuing their musical careers. In 2008, they were hit with another devastating blow when their father passed away. Even though the odds have been against them, the band members continue to make music and put on shows. Throughout their career, the girls have played alongside heavy metal bands like DevilDriver and Slipknot.

When asked whether Kittie feels respected by other metal bands, Morgan explains,Respect is something that is earned. Weve continued for the past 12 to 13 years to be an active band in the metal scene. Within the community of people that know us, know how hard weve worked, and what weve overcome, we are respected. After a short break, Kittie is kicking off a new tour in London.

After a few stops in Ontario, theyll will be heading to Australia for the Soundwave Festival and then returning to Canada for a West Coast tour. Director: Michael Sucsy Starring: Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum What would you do if you woke up and couldnt remember the last five years of your life? What if your own spouse was a stranger and you felt lost in the life you worked so hard to create? In The Vow, Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum fight this very battle in an attempt to keep a love that refuses to come back alive. Audiences may remember McAdams from her breakout role in The Notebook, and once again she manages to prove herself as a leading lady. Presenting yet another genuine performance, McAdams is the only true star in the film. Tatum is no Ryan Gosling, but he manages to pull off the role of McAdams love interest. Although

he produces a few too many corny lines, Tatums character, Leo, makes us believe in his love for his wife through constant patience and devotion. Tatums convincing role will leave viewers hoping he can win back his wifes affection. The film dives into the plot almost immediately when the two love birds are involved in a car accident that leaves Paige (McAdams) waking up to believe her husband is actually her doctor. Through flashbacks, the audience gets a glimpse into the couples heart-warming love story. When her memory is not recovered, viewers will find themselves rooting for the couple as they partake in a rollercoaster of events and emotion. Leo takes every action he can to make his wife fall in love with him again, while Paige struggles to make sense of it all by running back to her uptight parents. Not having spoken to her family in years, Paiges parents try to hold on to their daughter and hope

to prevent her from returning to her life with Leo. Paige attempts to rediscover herself, starting from what she last remembersas a law student engaged to another man, rather than as the free-spirited artist and wife she was before. Although there are other actors in the film, none of them manage to steal the spotlight from the lovely couple. There is enough chemistry between McAdams and Tatum to make the story believable. Both stars are valued in this particular genre and together they make an effective team. You may think this is just another chick flick, but The Vow, which is based on a true story, is a fairly realistic adaptation of a traumatic experience that leaves a newlywed couple figuring out how to get their lives back in order. The Vows release this past weekend came at the perfect time to set the mood for the most romantic day of the year. A word of advice dont forget to bring the tissues.

though were all daydreaming about the tropical destinations wed like to be visiting this spring break instead of tackling those midterm assignments, the new season of Survivor hits airwaves this week for another competitive getaway. this season, both tribes must converge on one beach and fight for supremacy the old fashioned waywith tooth, nail and a little bit of backstabbing.

You may be expecting to hear songs inspired by warm weather from a musician who calls himself Bahamas, but what youll experience from afie Jurvanens new album Barchords is a collection of mellow folk-rock love songs. although he has only changed up his sound a little bit, Barchords is the next step for this toronto native, and a great one at that. listeners will love listening to the relaxed but heartbreaking first track, Lost In the light, all the way through the last track, Where you Go.

this Valentines day you can go to the store and pick up what many tweens consider the greatest love story ever written and adapted to screen Twilights Breaking Dawn, Part 1. if you still want to decide whether to side with team edward or team Jacob, you can whet your palette with one more movie in your Twilight collection before you have to decide.

May the best man win takes on a whole new meaning this Friday, when two Cia operatives and best friends take on the fight to win the same woman. When the woman is reese Witherspoon, you can hardly blame them. This Means War tackles just how bad things get when the bro code is broken.

released to coincide with her appearance at the superbowl halftime show, madonnas new single ,Give me all your luvin, is another dance-pop song topping the charts. the song has been said to combine elements of bubblegum pop, synthpop, new wave and disco. opening with a cheerleader-style intro and featuring rappers nicki minaj and m.i.a., its a perfect song for dancing.

robert Johnson Contributor Performance Openers Setlist Crowd Worth the cash At the John Labatt Centre on Saturday night, the object of love was the music provided by Deep Purple. Hamiltons Monster Truck got the evening started and featured a lead guitarist with so much energy the rest of the group let him take half the stage for himself. What followed was exactly 110 minutesincluding encoreof solid performance by Deep Purple, starting their set with the fastpaced Highway Star. A wide demographic, including a gentleman with a cane and some kids barely into their teens, was treated to

songs from the early band configurations up to the present one. The concert continued with lead singer Ian Gillan, who managed with a camouflaged walking cast on his right foot. He mentioned their new album has yet to be released as a way of explaining why none of those tracks were included in the set. Steve Morse, lead guitarist, set the tone very early and established his credentials doing some flashy stuff on Too Much Is Not Enough. Throughout the evening, each member wound up performing a solo, plus a duet between bass player Roger Glover and drummer Ian Paicethe only founding member to have played non-stop with the group. Over the years, Deep Purple has included a total of 14 musicians, and the 17 songs played showed the successful evolution of the band. Keyboardist Don Aireys solo even included a snippet from Mo-

zarts Piano Concerto in C. Many of the tunes finished with a big swath of the audience on their feet, clapping and whistling, peaking at Smoke on the Water with backing vocals by the attendees. With the JLC being primarily a hockey rink, sound quality was as good as could be expected. That condition was made up for by a very attentive staff who kept things running smoothly when, for example, one concert-goer passed out and had to be helped from their seat. Deep Purples staying power can be attributed to a core sound in the custody of the keyboardist and lead guitaristthe very recognizable clipped Ritchie Blackmore style, as well as the sharing-of-thespotlight strategy. This thread of consistency and continuity was easily identifiable at their show on Saturday night.

Sports
Jesica Hurst arts & liFe editor As Sarah Black answers the phone with a warmhearted Hello? a sense of subtle exhaustion lingers over her breath. Its a Monday night, and while most students are easing into their workload for the week, Sarah has already rowed 30 kilometres, completed a weights workout and attended whatever classes she had scheduled for the day. Although she sounds tired, it isnt the sound of someone who is worn outit is the sound of someone who has had a fulfilling day, and is finally finding a few moments of downtime during all of the excitement. She is on Westerns womens rowing team, but she has not had any time to train with them this fall. Instead shes been training with her fellow Olympic candidates on the national team, in hopes of making it to London, England in 2012. Sarah, who is currently enrolled in her fifth year at Western, began rowing back in 2005. I started rowing back in ninth grade when my school offered a learn to row program, she says. It was kind of on a whim that I tried it with one of my best friends. I just fell in love with it and continued to pursue it after thatsomething about it just spoke to me. Sarah is a sweeper, which means she rows with only one bladenot one in each hand. Theres not one [type of] boat that I row, she explains. This summer I won the Under-23 World Championships in the eight [person], but this fall I won [the Ontario University Athletics championships] in the four and eight, and won [the Canadian University Rowing championships] in the pair and eight. As long as it is a sweep boat, Im eligible to race in it. The fact that she was a natural when she stepped in the boat for the first time could be a fluke, but it probably has something to do with her six-foot-five stature. Al Morrow, the senior national womens coach for Rowing Canada, first met Sarah while she was still in high school, and knew her physical attributes could take her far in this sport. The first thing thats outstanding about her is her physical buildshe has some natural attributes of a rower, one being her height, as shes quite tall, he says. You need a certain amount of length, and more is better, to do well in rowing. That was an indication that she was a good talent for the future. When the two first met, Sarah was already being recruited to some of the better colleges south of the border. Even though she could have experienced life outside of Canada, she chose to attend Western because of the successful rowing team. There are two national training centres in Canadaone in Victoria, thats the mens centre, and one in London, the womens centre, Morrow explains. I think in the back of her mind she probably thought, if Im in London, Im in close proximity to where the national team is based. I think it was also a good fit for her academically and socially. Even though she is currently only enrolled as a part-time student with three courses, academics are another important part of Sarahs life. As she talks about the other things she enjoys besides rowing, you can hear the passion in her voiceif there were more than 24 hours in the day, she would likely tackle it all. So how does a student train-

ing for the Olympics balance everything? If a scheduling conflict comes up, school is unfortunately the first thing to bend before my training, Sarah admits. But Im taking an online course, which is very easy to work around, and an evening course, which doesnt conflict with anything. I have one course in the afternoon, which makes me miss a row, but I just catch up on cross training at the gym after class so Im not behind. Sheila and Norm Black, her parents who currently live in Ottawa, are amazed at how well their daughter has learned to cope with such a busy schedule. I dont think we were ever worried about it, we were just certainly amazed that right from the start her involvement with rowing forced her to balance things. She just developed that skill on her own, Norm says. Shes a master at time management, and her priorities are very clear. Were in awe of that, Sheila

adds. As parents of an athlete with Olympic potential, they are as calm and composed as they can be, but you can hear it in their voices how proud they are. Even though they live seven hours away from London, they travel to support Sarah whenever she is racingits their joy and relaxation. Were just amazed with how hard shes worked and how diligent shes been at rowing, and so fortunate shes enjoyed every minute of it, Norm explains. You know, whenever she goes down to practice or gets in a boat or anything like that, she says, theres no feeling like itshe just loves it. Its been so easy for us over all these years because when she had to get up at quarter to five in the morning to go down to practice, she was the one that would get us up to drive her down because she just loves it so much. Although Sarah is in the Candidates Camp, which is the final group of 14 competing for a spot in

the 2012 Olympics, the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro is her main goal. After a winter of training indoors and three trips down south to row, she will find out in May if she has made the final cut. I am nervousIm terrified and overwhelmed at the same time too, she confesses. Im just excited for this winter of training because I know regardless of what happens in April, Ill be in good shape for any future racing I plan to do. As coach of the national team, what would Morrow like to say to Sarah? Stay the course. She has to stay the course and work steadily and hard, and work through all of the ups and downs, he says. She has to be really patient, and look at things in the long term. Shes very goal-driven, quiet, dependable and hardworkingpsychologically shes in a great position to do this. She could set herself up for a great four year period, if she wants to do it.
