Whitney A. Bryant 02/15/12 ENGL 1102 Ms. Caruso Annotated Bibliography #4 I. Citation a. Hotel Rwanda. Dir. Terry George.

Perf. Don Cheadle, Sophie Okonedo, Joaquin Phoenix. Afro Celt Sound System and Rupert Gregson-Williams. 2004. DVD. Annotation a. The setting of this great movie is in the capital of Rwanda, Kigali during the genocide of 1994. The story is centered on Rusesabagina, the assistant manager of Milles Collines Hotel who works his hardest throughout the entire movie to keep his family, Tutsi women, men, and many children safe from the Hutu clans that were on the prowl in destroying the complete generation of the Tutsi, and to invade the Milles Collines Hotel. b. This movie begins with a memorable quote informing the audience of the previous history of the Hutu and the Tutsi, and the power of the Tustsi in the beginning, information in which many people didn t originally know. c. This movie also clearly shows the intentions of the Rwandan president who was on his way to make peace with the Tutsi rebel forces and the militia was in approval. d. After the assassination of the president the Hutu gave the signal to cut the tall trees which means to kill all of the Tutsi. e. This movie shows few events before the assassination of the president, but the majority of the film shows the killings after the assassination. Quotes a. When people ask me, good listeners, why do I hate all the Tutsi, I say, "Read our history." The Tutsi were collaborators for the Belgian colonists, they stole our Hutu land, they whipped us. Now they have come back, these Tutsi rebels. They are cockroaches. They are murderers. Rwanda is our Hutu land. We are the majority. They are a minority of traitors and invaders. We will squash the infestation. We will wipe out the RPF rebels. This is RTLM, Hutu power radio. Stay alert. Watch your neighbors. b. I think if people see this footage, they'll say Oh, my God, that's horrible. And then they'll go on eating their dinners. c. I am glad that you have shot this footage and that the world will see it. It is the only way we have a chance that people might intervene. d. There will be no rescue, no intervention for us. We can only save ourselves. Many of you know influential people abroad, you must call these people. You must tell them what will happen to us... say goodbye. But when you say goodbye, say it as if you are

reaching through the phone and holding their hand. Let them know that if they let go of that hand, you will die. We must shame them into sending help. e. Politics is power, Hutu power. f. Cut the tall trees. IV. Evaluation a. This was a very wonderful and emotional film that depicts many of the events of the Rwandan Genocide. This movie was of great quality, and the director of the film had a great vision of the actual genocide, and the actual events leading up to the assassination of the Rwandan Genocide. This movie opened up my eyes to genocide and the some of the key reasons on why this movement was initiated in the first place. It also revealed to me the history of the Hutu and the Tutsi before the independence and the social revolution. This movie really shows the perspective of the Tutsi, and how they were bombarded, some out of their own homes, and killed. This source was worth my time because it gave me an overall picture of the genocide, the victim s perspectives and it gave front view to the Interhamwe (militia).
