AASHTO SDMS
SDMS is a detailed data structure that has been defined, documented, and adopted by AASHTO for recording field survey information and is detailed in the AASHTO publication, AASHTO SDMS Technical Data Guide 2000. SDMS consists of two modules: SDMS Collector and SDMS Processor.
SDMS Collector A survey data collection software system that can be used for common surveying tasks and complies with the AASHTO SDMS standard data structure. It currently runs on DOS-based computers, laptops, and hand-held PCs, and communicates with most commercially available total station instruments. SDMS Windows CE Collector The2004 release of the SDMS CE Collector is designed to provide survey data collection in the Windows CE environment. The SDMS CE Collector maintains the functionality of the SDMS DOS Collector, introduces communication with electronic levels, and provides basic coordinate geometry routines. However, the SDMS CE Collector will initially only be available to project participants. SDMS CE Collector will be initially available only to project participants. SDMS Processor is a Microsoft Windowsbased system for import and management of SDMS Collector data files. SDMS Processor will import and process routines from all SDMS Collector tasks, activities, and tags; and output an SDMS points, attributes and chains (PAC) file that contains least squares computed and adjusted values as well as analyzed and assembled line connectivity information.
To obtain a product brochure or information on pricing and licensing SDMS software, contact mbleaf@aashto.org.

National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP)
AASHTO, in partnership with the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), with financial support from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is leading a national effort to develop and adopt the National Transportation Communications for Intelligent Transportation Systems Protocol (NTCIP). NTCIP is a family of standards that provides rules for communicating (protocols) and vocabulary (objects) necessary for electronic traffic control equipment from different manufacturers to operate within a system. The NTCIP is the first set of standards for the transportation industry that allows traffic control systems using mix-and-match equipment, reducing reliance on specific vendors and customized software.Traffic control equipment includes signal controls at intersections, variable message freeway signs, environmental monitoring stations near bridges, cameras along streets and freeways, and other types of devices. For a description of each standard, regular availability updates, and a link to www.global.ihs.com for purchasing, go to www.transportation.org. Detailed information and status of standards under development can be found at the NTCIP web site www.NTCIP.org/library/documents. In addition to standards, AASHTO and its partners have also developed a guide on how to apply NTCIP standards and have conducted a number of case studies on the application of the standards. The case studies include the application of dynamic messages signs in the states of Virginia and Washington; traffic signal systems in Phoenix, Ariz., Mesa, Ariz., and Lakewood, Colo.; and two environmental sensor systems (road weather information systems) in Minnesota and Washington. The guide and case studies may be downloaded free at www.ntcip.org/library/documents. In addition, the latest issue of the NTCIPnews newsletter is available at www.ntcip.org/library/documents.

About AASHTO
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association that represents member highway and transportation departments in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. It is the only association that represents all five transportation modesair, highways, public transportation, rail, and water. Its primary goal is to foster development, operation, and maintenance of an integrated national transportation system. Membership to AASHTO is on an agency basis. The U.S. Department of Transportation is an ex-officio member, and many transportation agencies in other countries belong to the Association as international members. Several sub-state transportation agencies in the United States and several federal agencies are associate members. Membership is not extended to individuals or private sector entities.

Based on the load-and-resistance factor design philosophy (LRFD), this book is the result of a five-year research effort under AASHTOs National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 12-33. Since 1st Edition was published in 1994, the provisions have continued to be updated and improved based on continuing research and the experience of the user community. The new specifications have been systematically tested in trial designs in bridge design divisions of 14 AASHTO Member Departments. The 3rd Edition supersedes the 2nd Edition and its 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 interims.Available in either U.S. (standard) or SI (metric) versions, or may also be purchased as a standard/metric set. See page 9 for details.
