Have a green Thanksgiving

By J.C. Paustian

omewhere sandwiched between Halloween and Christmas is a holiday called Thanksgiving; you may have heard of it. It gets a lot of attention the week leading up to it, but its short-lived because Black Friday is hot on its heels. And even when Thanksgiving does gets mentioned, its usually attached to an after-Thanksgiving sale. Although this holiday is marked on the calendar as one day of the year, it should be something we reflect on nearly every day, especially during these tough economic times. And, attempting to live a greener lifestyle can also be a difficult task, but we should all be aware that the holiday season is an extremely wasteful time of year through consumerism, fuel and time. There are some simple things you can do to make your Thanksgiving a little greener. Heres my list of the top 8 tips for an ecofriendly Thanksgiving:

1.Buy organic, free-range turkey and fixins

your produce, The Environmental Working Group has come up with its annual Shoppers Guide to Pesticides in Produce. Their Dirty Dozen (which means these foods have the most pesticides and you should buy organic) are: 1. Apples 2. Celery 3. Strawberries 4. Peaches 5. Spinach 6. Nectarines imported 7. Grapes imported 8. Sweet bell peppers 9. Potatoes 10. Blueberries domestic 11. Lettuce 12. Kale/collard greens

To see the full report and to see the Clean 15, go to www.ewg.org/foodnews. Two other great resources for buying freerange turkeys, grass-fed beef and other local produce are: www.localharvest.org and www.farmfreshatlas.org.

2.Buy less packaged goods

Try to buy a free-range turkey, if possible. Free-range means the turkeys are not kept in cages and are allowed to move about in a yard or pasture. There are also many canned veggies and fruits that now are labeled USDA-Certified Organic. Again, choose those if you can (fresh, local produce is still best), but be aware that Certified Organic is pricier. To make things easier to prioritize
8
Natures Pathways | November 2011

When you do go out to buy the food items, other than the turkey, try to be conscious of the least amount of packaging. So much of packaged goods just end up in the landfill. Limit that pile of personal garbage.

www.naturespathwaysonline.com

3.Dont cook so much

Part of not cooking so much goes hand-in-hand with #2. Cook enough to get you by, but do you really need to project three helpings per person? Leftovers are nice, but I dont know of anyone who enjoys their seventh turkey sandwich in seven days. Take leftovers to less fortunate neighbors.

5.Celebrate at home; dont travel

4.Use silverware and dinnerware; not paper and plastic 6.Make your own decorations
Dust off your good China. Unpack (finally) your wedding silverware and dinnerware (even though youre in your 15th year of wedded bliss). Borrow forks from your family, whatever it takes. Just please dont spend your money on that cheap, disposable stuff like paper plates and plastic utensils. This creates more waste for the landfills, not to mention the toxic chlorine used to whiten those plates and petro-based chemicals used to make that plastic knife.

Thanksgiving time is one of the busiest travel times of the year. According to AAA, about 42 million Americans travel 50 miles or more during the Thanksgiving holiday. Avoid the stress, hassle and dollars of air or highway travel. Youll reduce carbon emissions to boot.

7.Say thank you

(I know this one and #8 arent ecofriendly tips, but theyre still good ones.) Times are tough. Real tough for many, many people. However, most of us still have our health and a roof over our heads. Give thanks for the family and friends in our lives and for our kids who bring us so many smiles when things dont always look positive.

We spend a lot of money on storebought Thanksgiving decorations that last only a few weeks at most. Go the ecofriendly route by making your own turkeys, Pilgrims, Native Americans and harvest dcor out of colorful construction paper and bakers clay. Plus, kids will love being a part of the project.

8.Volunteer at a soup kitchen

And finally, volunteer at a local soup kitchen. Places like these are also struggling to get financial help, so any volunteer hours are always appreciated. Go to www.homelessshelterdirectory.org to find a soup kitchen near you.

Why cant I lose weight or keep it off when Im exercising and eating right?
By Kathy Larson, CPT, CWC

here are many factors to consider when you are not seeing the weight loss that you had set out to originally. There are a variety of reasons for your lack of weight loss, some of which may be that you have a medical condition such as hypo thyroid preventing you from losing the weight you would like to. Or possibly youre taking medications that are making you retain water. Still, you have to factor in whether you are exercising at a high enough intensity, monitoring your heart rate and making certain you are exercising in your heart rate zone. I like to use a heart rate monitor to make certain Im tracking mine accurately. Otherwise, if you need to figure out your heart rate you can use a variety of ways to do so. My personal preference is the Karvonen formula, which is a way to calculate your heart rate zone accurately based on your age and resting heart rate. For example, say a 25-year-old with a resting heart rate of 65 wants to know his training heart rate for the intensity level 60%-70%. Heres how to calculate:

His Minimum Training Heart Rate:

220 - 25 (Age) = 195 195 - 65 (Rest. HR) = 130 130 x .60 (Min. Intensity) + 65 (Rest. HR) = 143 Beats/Minute 220 - 25 (Age) = 195 195 - 65 (Rest. HR) = 130 130 x .70 (Max. Intensity) + 65 (Rest. HR) = 156 Beats/Minute

His Maximum Training Heart Rate:

Nutrition is half of the battle, and finding the right balanced diet for you is going to make all the difference. Personally, I say you follow the advice of your physician and/or a nutritionists advice, being that you may have specific dietary needs or deficiencies. Either way, you have to make certain you are consuming enough of the right calories daily to burn excess calories when exercising in your heart rate zone. Lets say youve followed all this advice and you still struggle with losing the weight and/or keeping it off over time. Maybe its time you get real, as Dr. Phil says. With that said, the biggest issue that continues to surface with my clients is self-defeating behaviors.
10
Natures Pathways | November 2011

Its our nature to return to the behaviors that feed the need at the time, and its those self-defeating behaviors that allow us to remain where were unhappy to begin with, in our comfort zone. Its similar to the comfort foods we turn to out of certain emotions such as sadness, anger, or simply celebrating being happy. Learning to feed the need versus the want is really what we need to start training our minds to do. We have to retrain our minds to start practicing to respond to situations in a more positive, possibly uncomfortable way, versus not surrendering to our every emotion that got us not losing the weight to begin with. We usually revert to a self-defeating behavior from our past because its easy and seems natural to do, and because to some extent it protects us from something feared. Throughout our life time, our environments and circumstances change, but a learned behavior is exactly that, something that we practice repeatedly throughout our lifetime. Thus its easily fallen back on no matter whats changed around us, because its comfortable and feeds what we believe to be the need at the time. An example would be eating chocolate more times than not or something sweet, whenever were sad. Here we are feeding the want out of a sad emotion per se, thus the extra calories and vicious cycle are repeated with other emotions daily. So what are you really afraid of? Why not start asking yourself the difficult questions youve been avoiding to answer and stop justifying the real reason why youre not having success with losing weight and keeping it off? Why not start to look for healthy alternatives to living your life? You can have success if its truly what you want. After all, change is inevitable and growth is optional, as Benjamin Disraeli once said. You need to decide for yourself where the real issue is, and why youre not at the weight you so desire. .

Is that aromatherapy or Moms holiday dessert?

By Mary Wishmann

very day we are exposed to so many different smells. Many are associated with food and our sense of taste; fruits, spices and herbs of all kinds. Then there is the smell of freshly mown grass, flowers and church incense, to name a few. Are these just smells or do we actually derive aromatherapy benefits from them? What kind of benefits can we expect and how does this happen? When we inhale fragrance molecules, they attach themselves to olfactory receptors that send impulses to the brain. The

part of our brain that receives these messages is responsible for basic human needs like appetite as well as emotions and memories. Messages from chocolate may stimulate the brain to release serotonin to bring about feelings of well-being. Lavender messages may tell the brain to produce alpha brain waves that are associated with relaxation. Rosemary messages may produce less alpha waves to become more alert, ready for

a complex mental task. In a study by the University of Cincinnati, researchers discovered that both peppermint and lily of the valley fragrances influenced computer workers to make 25 percent fewer mistakes than those breathing unscented air. In a similar Japanese study, the results were 50 percent fewer clerical errors with lemon scented air. Peppermint has been known to increase mental alertness. Lemon has been used to reduce fatigue. But the lily of the valley is not known for its aromatherapy value. The Victorian era language of flowers denotes a meaning for many types of flowers. Around Valentines Day, florists advertise their many rose colors, and the particular aspect of love that each color represents. The lily of the valley symbolizes a return to the happiness of springtime. Some people may have scent memories associated with the flower. Maybe its one of those fragrances that just makes people feel happy. Alan R. Hirsch, M.D., director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, studied the effects of scent on sexual arousal. Fourty percent of male volunteers were turned-on by the fragrance of lavender and pumpkin pie. Other turn-ons were licorice and doughnuts, pumpkin pie and doughnuts, and cinnamon buns. In the turn-offs for men,

None have been found. So it seems that the way to his heart really may be through his stomach. Chocolate also has aphrodisiac properties, according to Hirsch. It also stimulates the release of serotonin, the feelgood chemical. He calls it an antidepressant in dessert form. Throughout history, other heady fragrances have been used as aphrodisiacs. Josephine wore violets on her wedding day for Napoleon. She also paneled her walls with fragrant sandalwood. Cleopatra used lots of rose petals to seduce Mark Anthony. She even scented the sails of her personal sailing vessel. But ancient incenses used in religious services tend to put many of us in a somber mood, especially as they relate to funerals. Frankincense and myrrh have been used historically to promote meditation and prayer, perfect for church use. Other incense however, may remind us of vinyl LPs, beaded curtains, black light posters and a fuzzy paranoia that had something to do with patchouli covering another kind of smoke, I think... The way we react to a particular smell depends on the memories we associate

Prepare your pet for a new baby

nimals and babies can be great together, if the proper precautions are taken. A new baby means major life changes for everyone in the family. Help your companion animal prepare for this blessed event by following these guidelines: Set up the nursery as soon as possible. Let your animal explore the room during this process. Consider placing a small battery-operated motion detector (sold at Radio Shack) in the crib to discourage him from claiming this cozy bed for his special napping spot. Introduce your animal to the new

scents that he will experience once the baby is home by using some of the powders, soaps and lotions you will be using on the baby. At least one month before the babys arrival, establish any necessary changes in your animals routine. For example, since cats like to cuddle, it is not advisable to allow the cat in the newborns room when the baby is sleeping, so now is the time to close the door and to teach your cat that it is off-limits. To get your animal used to the sights and sounds of the babys room, invite friends with babies to visit. If that isnt

possible, try to obtain an audio tape of a baby crying. Baby sounds may be the most frightening aspect of having a baby around for everyone. Try to desensitize him gradually to this aspect of babys presence in the home. Before bringing the newborn home, bring home an unwashed piece of your babys clothing for your animal to smell. Our companion animals identify us primarily through the sense of smell, not sight. Once the baby is home, try to keep your animals routine as close to normal as possible. This means regular meal times and play sessions. Dont wait until baby is asleep to play with your pet. If he gets praise and attention when baby is in the room, he will associate the new member of the family with good times, not competition for attention. Be patient, animals need time to adapt. If your animals behavior is a little erratic at first, remember that in spite of all your careful preparations, this still is a big change for all members of the family. Eventually, everyone will settle in and your baby will grow up with the advantage of having the unconditional love and devotion of a companion animal. Your child may also be more empathetic, a quality he or she will carry into adulthood.

Running and Walking as Nature Intended

s the Midwests first and only shoe store dedicated solely to minimalist footwear, Revolution Natural Running and Walking Center in Wauwatosa is leading the way in bringing the minimalist running and walking movement to the mainstream in southeastern Wisconsin. Opened this spring by certified pedorthist, marathoner and three-time Iron Man finisher Kyle Roberts, Revolution is a resource for runners and walkers of all ages, abilities and fitness levels. The store carries nearly a dozen of the best brands in minimalist footwear, including Newton, Vibram, Kigo, Merrell, Inov-8 and more, as well as clothing, books, nutrition bars and other running accessories. More than just a shoe store, Revolution offers state-of-the-art video gait analysis for its customers, and Roberts and his staff take the time to talk with each of their customers to learn about their needs and goals, their level of fitness and their challenges. Revolution hosts regular running events and clinics that teach guests the basics of minimalism, which are put on by Revolution staff and a variety of expert guest presenters. Roberts employs people who understand and have experienced the benefits of minimalist running, and the entire staff thrives on educating people on the benefits of wearing less shoe. Customers range from running enthusiasts who have been running in minimalist shoes for some time, to people who have seen the unmistakable Vibram FiveFingers on others around town and are curious about trying them or something similar for themselves. The bottom line is that everyone can benefit from wearing less of a shoe, says Roberts. Most of us have incredibly weak feet because of all the cushioning and support we give them through the regular footwear we wear, and having weak feet leads to all kinds of problems with the ankles, knees, and back really, with the whole body. Roberts continues: Our goal is to help people prevent injury and strengthen their feet by allowing their feet to do what nature intended them to do. By using our foot muscles through walking and running barefoot or in minimalist footwear whenever possible our feet grow stronger, and this improves our overall health and well-being. Revolution Natural Running and Walking Center is located at 11702 North Ave., Wauwatosa. Learn more at www.revolutionnaturalrunning.com or by calling 414.988.5370.

Wise women know about bioidentical hormone therapy

By Randi Mann, NP

id you know there is a difference between bioidentical and synthetic hormones and the right type of hormone can help you to feel great? If you are a woman, this is an important topic to pay attention to! Symptoms of hormone imbalance are affecting more and more women earlier than ever before. High stress, poor diet and unhealthy lifestyle choices, along with advancing age and genetics, can contribute to various hormonerelated symptoms. Fatigue, irritability, hot flashes, insomnia, vaginal dryness, decreased libido, insomnia and anxiety can all be related to changing hormone levels or imbalances. Surprisingly, menopause-like symptoms can begin for some women in their late 20s or 30s and last for years. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) can start during the teenage years and persist late into adulthood. Many women simply feel lethargic and lack the motivation to complete their daily tasks when their hormones are out of balance. It is possible to feel great throughout your entire life if you give your mind and your body great support and if you practice this on a regular basis. Exercising frequently, reducing stress, eating a healthy diet of vegetables, fruits, protein, whole grains and other unprocessed foods will go a long way to help you feel well. Simply decreasing white sugar and flour in your diet will make a big difference in helping to keep your hormones balanced. Use of supplemental female sex hormones such as bioidentical estrogen, progesterone and testosterone may be helpful as well. Bioidentical hormones are those that are molecularly identical to those that are produced naturally in the human body. These fit our cells hormone receptors better than synthetic hormones and tend to have fewer risks and side effects. It is important to understand the difference in the terms progesterone and progestin. They may look or sound similar, but they are very different in both structure and action in our human body. These terms are often used in error or interchangeably, particularly in news stories. The word progesterone refers to a natural or bioidentical hormone molecule while Progestin, though similar, is a synthetic version and not bioidentical.

In October 2010, a new report from the Womens Health Initiative Study was published in JAMA regarding the finding of increased breast cancer incidence and mortality for women who took synthetic hormones. The studies primary finding was of 1 to 2 extra deaths from breast cancer per 10,000 women per year. There were 1.3 deaths per 10,000 women per year for the group of women who were given a placebo (no hormones). There were 2.6 deaths from breast cancer per 10,000 women per year who took synthetic hormone replacement therapy. These results apply only to the group of women who took the combined estrogen and synthetic progestin and not to estrogen use alone. To help us put this data into perspective the authors note that the increased breast cancer risk using estrogen plus synthetic progestin for 5 years is very similar to the increased risk of breast cancer associated with having menopause 5 years later. If you look carefully at the numbers the results are certainly important but perhaps not quite as significant or scary as some headlines may have made it sound. When listening to news reports of hormone study outcomes, it is critically important to understand the type of hormones (bioidentical or synthetic, the doses and the method of delivery (pill form, patch, cream, etc.) in the study as each variable can greatly impact the studys outcomes. Hearing negative hormone news can be frightening for women who are presently using any type of hormone therapy, who took hormones in the past or are considering hormone use now. In the words of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS),

Taking individualized dosed, bioidentical progesterone often helps women in their 30s, 40s and 50s to have more energy and sleep better.
Each woman, in consultation with her healthcare provider, needs to prioritize her midlife health concerns and determine whether hormone therapy is an acceptable choice for her. NAMS recommends use of the lowest effective hormone doses for the shortest amount of time to treat moderate to severe symptoms. It is reassuring to look at the large E3N French Women Study which has been following nearly 100,000 women over more than eight years time and is providing valuable safety data for users of bioidentical hormones. In summary, women using synthetic hormone therapy had a much greater cancer risk. Women using bioidentical hormones had the same breast cancer risk as women who were not using hormones of any kind. Experts have written that natural or bioidentical progesterone with estrogen confers less or even no risk of breast cancer and offers favorable action on blood vessels and brain, which is not true for synthetic progestins. The decision whether to take hormones is unique for each woman and should be guided by the severity of your symptoms, personal health history and your family health history. If you are a woman in perimenopause or menopause you may also wish to consider having your hormone levels tested. First line therapy should be improved nutrition, possibly herbal therapy, lifestyle changes and exercise. If this does not help enough then use of low dose, customized, bioidentical hormones may be needed to alleviate your symptoms. Taking individualized dosed, bioidentical progesterone (and perhaps estrogen if needed near the time of menopause) often helps women in their 30s, 40s and 50s to have more energy and sleep better. Bioidentical progesterone plays a vital role in helping many women to feel calmer, less irritable and to sleep more restfully. Estrogen can alleviate bothersome hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. If you are not feeling your best please seek answers and proper guidance for management of your hormone related symptoms and individual needs. Choose a knowledgeable provider who specializes in midlife care for women and is certified through the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) if possible.

Diagnosing & treating

allergic allergic contact dermatitis dermatitis

By Jennifer Walla

If

youve ever suffered from an itchy or painful rash, you know how frustrating it can be to treat. Knowing the cause of the problem, however, is the best way to alleviate symptoms, as well as prevent a recurrence. Increasingly, allergic reactions may be to blame. Allergic contact dermatitis is an itchy skin condition that is caused by an allergic reaction to any material that comes in contact with skin, explains Marjorie Yang, M.D., a board certified dermatologist with Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin, Kenosha. The affected skin may be red, swollen, blistered, dried and bumpy. The reactions may vary in the same person over time, Yang says. Interestingly, you may not have a reaction the first time youre exposed to the offending substance. Sometimes, although there may be no initial reaction, regular use of the allergen can cause sensitivity over the course of a few months or years. High-Nickel Containing Foods: You can develop an allergy at any point in life, says Canned food Sesame seeds Giacomo Maggiolino, M.D., a board-certified dermatolo Sugars/preserves Wheat bran cereals gist with Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin, Grafton. He Shellfish Breads points out that there are a number of common sources of Chocolate Dates, figs, raspberries, pineapple allergies ranging from some of the ingredients in the toilet Oatmeal Baking powder in large amounts ries we use, medical items, rubber, food products and metal. Beans, lentils Hazelnuts, peanuts, almonds The incidence of allergic contact dermatitis is on the Spinach Vitamins containing nickel increase, especially with nickel, Maggiolino says. Soy protein Nickel is a chemical element that is in many of the products consumers use, as well as the foods we eat.
SOURCE: Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin

At least 10-15 percent of women and 2-5 percent of men are allergic to nickel, and 30-40 percent of nickel-sensitive people develop hand eczema which may often be chronic with far-reaching consequences for both the individual and the society, according to one study presented by the CDC. (The problem is so widespread that the European Union adopted a Nickel Directive in 1994, which limits the amount of nickel in substances with the goal of preventing sensitization and elicitation of allergic contact dermatitis.) The regulations in Europe have shown a decreasing prevalence of the problem there, while the incidence in North America is on the increase, Maggiolino says. So whats a person with a rash to do? Many people try to treat the symptoms with over-the-counter antihistamines or anti-itch creams, but these things do not get to the root cause of the problem, says James Lynott, M.D., a boardcertified dermatologist with Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin, Oshkosh. Its very important to see a dermatologist to get the correct diagnosis. While your primary care physician may understand youre having an allergic reaction, dermatologists have the tools to adequately diagnose and treat the condition, says Lynott, who will soon be seeing patients in Burlington and Racine. We can find out the causing agent. One such tool is called patch testing, which is a series of applications applied to the skin to find out whether their skin condition may be caused or aggravated by a contact allergy. A wide range of substances are used for the test. Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin starts the testing with the North American 80 Comprehensive Series, and adds additional specific tests when appropriate. Anyone who suffers from frequent rashes, recurrent rashes, atopic eczema with frequent flare ups, or rashes that havent cleared up, even with the use of steroids, should get patch tested. Patch testing is the gold standard, and were fortunate that we have the most complete and extensive types here at Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin, Maggiolino says.

Common Sources of Allergens

Toiletries cosmetics, perfumes, shampoos, soaps, lotions or other skin care products. Medical items such as cough syrup, topical anesthetics, antibiotic creams, eye drops, ear drops, bandages, or any other drops, medicated creams/ointments. Rubber products shoes, gloves, elastic tires, handles, and hoses. Food products flavorings, candies or chewing gum. Metals jewelry, metal-plated products or costumes.

SOURCE: Dermatology Associates of Wisconsin

The testing, which is done at the dermatology clinic, is simple and painless. Tiny quantities of 80 antigens (substances or molecules that, when introduced into the body, triggers the production of an antibody by the immune system) are placed on the back in thin chambers. The back is then marked with a black felt tip pen to identify test sites. Tape is applied over the top of the chambers to ensure they are protected and they stay on the back for 48 hours. Its important to keep the area being tested dry and free of all products during the entire testing phase. When you return to the clinic in 48 hours, the tape is removed so your physician can examine the area being aggravated, Lynott says. Patients return again in 24-48 hours for a final evaluation. The results of the testing will help you avoid your allergens and reduce or prevent rashes in the future. You have to become a label reader and you have to know whats in the products you use and consume, Lynott says. We try to help our patients discover what theyre allergic to and give them a list of items that may or may not contain that substance. Once you know what to avoid, your dependency on medications is reduced and your quality of life will improve. Taking care of yourself while caring for another

aregiving is seldom easy. It involves providing financial, physical, emotional and spiritual support to someone who is unable to live independently. According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, approximately 44 million unpaid individuals (mostly family members) provide care each year to ill or disabled loved ones who are age 18 or older. If youre a caregiver, no one has to tell you about competing demands for your time. You may feel the emotional drain of caring for a loved one whose condition may not improve. Or, if you also happen to work outside the home, you may be dealing with the strains of building a career and raising a family simultaneously. Multi-tasking is your middle name and thats why it is important that you hone your stress-management skills. An ongoing, landmark study of caregivers conducted at the University of Arkansas revealed that those who provide help managing money and medications reported greater stress than those who provided primarily physical care. Dealing with a persons cognitive and emotional difficulties is harder than dealing with physical challenges. But there are ways to manage the physical, emotional and financial stress that comes with being a caregiver and keep it from overwhelming you. The Journal of the American Medical Association offers these 10 stress reduction suggestions: 1. Dont take on more responsibility than you can handle. 2. Use relaxation techniques like meditating, visualizing comforting scenes or listening to music. 3. Tackle one thing at a time. Once you complete that task, move onto the next. 4. Make your lifestyle as healthy as possible. Eat nutritious meals; limit caffeine and alcohol; get enough rest and exercise regularly; and balance work, recreation and your caregiving. 5. Schedule time to take a break and do things you enjoy. 6. Have family and friends you can turn to for love, support and guidance. 7. Educate yourself about your loved ones condition. Information is empowering.
20
Natures Pathways | November 2011

8. Consider joining a support group. 9. See your doctor if the stress begins to feel unmanageable. 10. Consult your doctor or local social worker about resources in the community that can give you the support you need. Most important, ask for help. Whether its friends, associates, church members or others, teamwork will reduce the likelihood of burnout and enhance the care you provide. Working as a team can result in a well-deserved break so you can watch a movie, read a book or enjoy a nap. Keep family members, even relatives who express little interest, informed on a regular basis about the care being provided. These meetings can take place in person, on the phone or by e-mail. List things that need to be done and ask family members to take responsibility at least on an occasional basis for certain tasks, such as picking up a prescription or doing laundry. Take advantage of the resources available nationwide for caregivers, such as your local Area Agency on Aging. This organization can provide valuable information on case management, in-home care, home-delivered meals and assistance devices, senior activity centers and caregiver training programs, and more. To find your local organization, along with other valuable resources, use the Eldercare Locator at eldercare.gov, a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging.

Strong feet, strong body: simple ways to strengthen the feet

By Kyle Roberts

any of us spend hours in the gym doing exercises to strengthen our arms, our legs, our abs and other major parts of our bodies. But how often do we take the time to focus on the part of our body that is our very foundation, that we utilize with every single step we take? The feet are no doubt an integral part of our bodies, but most of us spend little if any time focusing on strengthening them. Instead we wear cushioned shoes that essentially do our work for us, propelling us forward and supporting our feet with each step we take, thus making our feet weak in the process. Science has shown and continues to show that cushioned shoes and weak feet lead to more injuries and pain in our feet, legs, and backs. With the advent of the cushioned running shoe in the 1970s, running injuries and foot problems skyrocketed. We were no longer allowing our feet to do what nature intended, which is to walk and run barefoot or in a minimal amount of shoe. Forty years later, footwear technology continues to evolve, and yet injuries continue to rise, driving people to search for solutions that include inserts, orthotics, ever-different and more expensive built-up shoes, pain medications, and even surgery. In reality, the fix for a large majority of people is simple set your feet free and allow them to do what theyre meant to do. When we walk or run barefoot, our feet naturally land flat on the ground, on the balls of the feet. However, when we put

1. Stand on one leg with your eyes closed

thickly cushioned shoes on our feet, we tend to strike the ground with our heels, which causes trauma to our bodies with every step. The built-up shoe gives us a false sense of security, and we hit the ground much harder than we would otherwise. Walking and running barefoot or in a minimalist shoe eliminates this unnatural way of striding and is one of the best ways to slowly over time add strength to the feet. When our feet are strong, our overall health, wellbeing, and performance improve. Our balance is better, our legs in turn become stronger, and were much better equipped to withstand walking and running great distances, performing yoga or other athletic activities, or even standing for long periods of time. Below we outline seven more ways you can work to strengthen your feet, in just a few minutes a day.

muscles and your calf muscles.

3. Do standing tip-toe and calf raises

As above, this exercise will also work both your feet and your calves.

4. Stretch your toes using toe separators or your hands

The further youre able to spread your toes, the better balance and stability you will have.
5. Point and flex your feet while seated

This move is one you can do while sitting at your desk or while watching TV. By pointing and flexing your feet, youre able to stretch out and strengthen the ankles.
6. Keep your first toe on the ground and try lifting other toes, and vice versa

Dexterity is another quality of strong feet. The more youre able to move your toes independently of one another, the stronger your toes and feet will be.
7. Stretch your feet using a towel

This test will show you how strong your feet currently are. If you fall within a few seconds, the muscles in your feet that affect balance and stability are fairly weak. Perform this exercise several times per week, beginning with your eyes open if need be, and watch to see how the time youre able to stand on one leg increases over time.
2. Stand and walk on your tip-toes

As with any other muscle, the feet need to be stretched on a regular basis to feel and perform their best.

Expert answers to your health and wellness questions

The best diet, movement to lose it and maintaining motivation
By Karmen Nenahlo

Question: I have a very simple question. In your opinion, whats the one BEST diet? Answer: Thats an interesting question and one thats harder to answer than you might realize. Put it this way I think the optimal diet is one that accomplishes these three goals: 1. It gets you to your desired weight, assuming you have one; 2. It promotes health and helps to stave off chronic disease; and 3. It is sustainable for the long term. So if you want me to be specific, the optimal diet would provide plenty of water, 35-40 grams of fiber per day, and include ample amounts of whole grains, proteins, and polyand monounsaturated fats. It would also include 8-10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, a couple servings of fresh fish each week, a few servings of dairy, and would generally include more vegetarian options than the standard western diet. Added sugars, sodium, and saturated and trans fats would all be limited, though its important that the diet is realistic and doable, so treats certainly wouldnt be outlawed. I know youre looking for one diet to follow, but in all my years working in health and wellness, just about every diet is missing something, or places too much emphasis on this and not enough on that you get the idea. Your best bet would be to track your food for just a few weeks, and gradually try to incorporate some of the recommendations above. I also recommend reading The Way to Eat: A Six-Step Path to Lifelong Weight Control by Dr. David Katz.

Natures Pathways | November 2011

Question: I heard a personal trainer speak recently at a conference, and he said its important to just move more when it comes to weight loss. The funny thing is I dont think he was talking about exercise per se. Thoughts? Answer: The trainer was right! We simply dont move enough anymore, and what he was likely referring to was NEAT, or non-exercise activity thermogenesis. Quite a mouthful, huh? NEAT is essentially the energy we expend when were not eating, sleeping, or exercising. Unfortunately, with desk jobs, TV watching, and Web surfing now the norm, the calories we burn doing general daily tasks has diminished greatly. Some researchers actually believe that the movement (pardon the pun) from a manual laborbased workforce to a desk-centric one has been the biggest factor in the obesity epidemic. They point to the fact that our collective calorie intake hasnt increased much at all in recent decades, despite the prevalence of French fries, potato chips, soda, and frothy, high-calorie Starbucks drinks. This particular issue is debated in the scientific community, but the fact remains. We are more sedentary than weve ever been before (we have low levels of NEAT) and we should do something about it. Break up your workday with mini-walks, keep the TV off for an hour or two when you get home, and disconnect from cyber-world for a bit. These small changes will alter your movement patterns, which could ultimately affect your waistline and your overall health.
www.naturespathwaysonline.com

Question: When Im motivated, my workouts and diet are rock solid. But thats my problem motivation. Any tips to help me stay on track with my goals? Answer: Absolutely! Even those of us in the health and wellness field struggle with motivation from time to time. We are certainly not immune. That said, there are several things you can do to keep yourself motivated. First of all, set small goals. Its important to know the big picture, but the journey to get there can be daunting, so break it up into smaller, more achievable chunks. Scheduling your activities helps a lot as well. If you treat exercise like an important meeting or like brushing your teeth, its more likely to become a habit. Partnering up is also an excellent idea. It would be difficult to find a better motivator than a friend of family member keeping you accountable to your workouts, your diet, and your newfound lifestyle. And frankly, sometimes you probably need a kick in the you-know-what. Last, but not least, pay for it! This may sound a bit odd, but if you have some skin in the game, the game dramatically changes. Buy a gym membership, join an online health Web site, purchase a credible book, or throw down some cash for a heart rate monitor. Making an investment in your health will pay dividends in the long run.

any restaurants claim to offer authentic fare, but Carinis La Conca DOro truly delivers on the promise. For the past 15 years the family-owned restaurant, located at 3468 N. Oakland Ave. on Milwaukees east side, has been a favorite among locals and out-of-towners alike. This is due in part to owner/chef Peter Carinis commitment to using only the freshest food and finest ingredients. Carini, who came to the U.S. in 1966 from Porticello, Italy, learned from his mother that good Italian food is the result of taste, touch and instinct rather than closely following a recipe. The atmosphere at Carinis is second to none. The front dining area doubles as an indoor/outdoor patio and evokes a dining by the seaside vibe. Faux-painted walls in the upscale dining room nearby, with the look of aged terra cotta and brick, give the feel of dining in an old villa. Antique fixtures and family photos in the back dining room are the perfect backdrop for festive parties or

business functions. The expanded bar area is great for savoring a before-dinner cocktail or meeting friends for a glass of wine, and the banquet room serves up to 75 people comfortably. The restaurants name means Shell of Gold. With Italian, Sicilian and American cuisine, it offers 13 appetizers, 21 pasta dishes and many seafood options, as well as lunch, dinner and wine menus. Carinis is also a great place for vegetarians, with a number of meatless offerings. On the day our diners visited, they opted to order from the vegetarian lunch buffet. They began with a generous portion of fresh bread served with homemade dipping oil, which could have been a satisfying meal in itself. Our diner chose the linguini primavera for his entree. It features fresh broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, green and red peppers and crushed peppers sauted in a delicious garlic olive oil. His companion chose the Melenzane e Pangrattao, which also got raves. It features eggplant with crushed peppers, garlic, olive oil and toasted breadcrumbs

over spaghetti and marinara sauce. Of course, pasta is a staple on any Italian menu, but Carinis does it one better. In addition to preparing its own, the restaurant encourages gluten-sensitive customers to bring in gluten-free or wheat pasta, which it will prepare separately to avoid cross contamination. In fact, if there is an ingredient in a dish you do not like, or you want something added to a dish, you can ask the server to customize your meal as every dish is made fresh to order, Chef Peter explains. All pasta dishes are served with your choice of soup or salad. Non-pasta dishes are served with a choice of potato or pasta, and soup or salad. Of course, many patronize Carinis for its house specialty, spiedini, which is an Italian word for skewers of meat or fish grilled over a flame or under a broiler. Choices include beef, chicken, veal, swordfish and eggplant. All are stuffed and rolled with bread crumbs, cheese and special seasonings. If you just cant get enough of any of these delicacies during your visit, Carinis also sells its delicious spaghetti and marinara sauces, garlic olive oil and seasoned salt, hand prepared by Chef Peter himself. A variety of gift baskets are offered, and are perfect for those hard-to-buy-for friends and family members, and those who want a little taste of Carinis at home. Six ways to ease stress this holiday season

By Caitlin Brotz

ovember is the magical month that kicks off the holiday season. As we sit back and anticipate getting together with our loved ones to celebrate all the blessings of the year gone by, we will also tune our minds to the gift-giving season that lies ahead. This year, we will all be a little more focused on simplistic gifts that seem to shift from lavish to meaningful. We want to show our love and appreciation with small gestures that seem to nourish each other, and ourselves. Most of us are ready to relax our mind from the turbulence and focus on the foundation and importance of family and friends. This year, the holidays will take on great meaning as we focus on whats truly important; our family, our health, and our joys. Focusing on the positive is the best way to nip anxiety as we begin the hustle-and-bustle of the holiday season, so we put together 6 ways for you to relax and keep calm, in hopes of making this holiday season an enjoyable one.

Meditate

Take time to focus on nothing. The ancient philosophy of Japanese tea houses has you take your shoes off, and leave all your troubles outside. There is usually a beautiful flower arrangement inside for you to focus on. Give your mind a break and forget about your troubles for at least ten minutes a day.

holidays. So, why not get it done sooner, so you dont have to stress about it? Handmade gifts are often the most memorable. Knowing that you took the time to create something fresh and soul-nurturing just for them will surely make the recipient beam. Also, the act of creating a gift is a rewarding and therapeutic experience for the giver as well.

Get outdoors

Now is the time to connect with nature. Let it inspire you. Let it flood you with the positive life-giving properties that will keep you balanced. The fresh air will be the charge you need to keep uplifted and provide another means of exercise.

Aromatherapy

Exercise

Pamper yourself

We know, we know, easier said than done. But this month, start your resolutions early. You are so good to everyone else, its important to put yourself first this year. Buy that gym membership and go for it! By the time Christmas rolls around you will be so glad that you stuck to it. Your family will be impressed and you will feel uplifted. If you start now and stick to it you are bound to have results. Promise yourself youll do it. The reward will be you can eat more Christmas candy!

It only takes a half hour to relax in a deep tub filled with skin nurturing bubbles. Bring a cold, damp washcloth to lie over your eyes as you drift into a therapeutic zone that will leave your body rested and relaxed.

Study after study shows that the act of smelling aromas can relax us or give us more energy. Buy yourself that festive candle and breathe in the enjoyable memories of holidays past and transcend yourself into the holiday spirit. This year you create your own peace, enjoyment and relaxation. With a little preparation you can enjoy all the benefits holidays have to offer. Have a great holiday season.

Is childhood obesity child abuse?

By Tony Bednarowski

ince 1980, childhood obesity in our country has more than doubled. In adolescents, instances of obesity have more than tripled. Overweight children and adolescents are at increased risk for several health related conditions. During their youth, for example, they are more likely to exhibit risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type 2 Diabetes compared with normal weight individuals. Additional health conditions associated with overweight children include sleep apnea, asthma, and liver damage. Furthermore, overweight children and adolescents are far more likely to become obese as adults. Studies have found that approximately 80 percent of children who were overweight at the ages of 10 to 15 were obese by the time they hit 25. Other studies have found that more than 25 percent of obese adults were overweight as children. As you can see, there is a direct correlation between children/adolescents being overweight and adult obesity. Equally so, it may be easier to see how this is being passed on from parents to their children. I personally believe that much of this is the result of our nations irresponsibility when it comes to educating people on what constitutes a healthy lifestyle, beginning with the basics of good nutrition and physical activity. However, I also believe each of us has a personal responsibility to educate ourselves and be accountable for our health and wellbeing. The inadequacy as parents to understand, live and pass down by example the importance of good nutritional choices along with physical activity is setting our youth up for troubling times ahead. When a child is overweight, he or she is not only at risk for many deadly but preventable chronic health issues, but the huge psychological and emotional consequences that also come along with it. Sadly, the evidence on the psychological consequences of obesity for teens is mounting. A recent survey reveals that obese children rate their quality of life as low as those of young cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
26
Natures Pathways | November 2011

Other studies report increased rates of depression, low selfesteem and social isolation, which are then manifested in significant behavioral problems. As these children grow up, they are less likely to be accepted into college, less likely to get married, and more likely to occupy a lower socioeconomic status. Much more relevant is the teasing, taunting and poor treatment they receive from other children at school and in the community. And for many, its not only how others think of them, but how they think of themselves. A sizable percentage of overweight kids particularly girls are clinically depressed as a result of a preoccupation with being overweight.

Causes of weight problems and obesity in children

It is a parents obligation to not only educate and lead their children by example but to also understand how and why children become obese or overweight in the first place as well as taking the important step to breaking the cycle. Most cases of childhood obesity are caused by poor eating habits, eating too much and exercising too little. Children need enough food to support healthy growth and development. But when they take in more calories than they burn throughout the day, the result is weight gain. Many factors contribute to this growing imbalance between calories in and calories out: Busy families are cooking less and eating out more. There is easy access to cheap, high-calorie fast food and junk food. Food portions are bigger than they used to be, both in restaurants and at home. Kids spend less time actively playing outside, and more time

watching TV, playing video games and sitting at the computer. Many schools are eliminating or cutting back their physical education programs. There are many myths about weight problems and obesity in children. But then there are the cold, hard facts.

problems. Most kids can maintain a healthy weight if they eat right and exercise.

Myth: Children who are obese or overweight should be put on a diet.

Unless directed by your childs doctor otherwise, the treatment for childhood obesity is not weight loss. The goal should be to slow or stop weight gain, allowing your child to grow into his or her ideal weight.
Myth: Its just baby fat. Children will outgrow the weight.

Childhood obesity doesnt always lead to obesity in adulthood, but it does raise the risks dramatically. The majority of children who are overweight at any time during the preschool or elementary school are still overweight as they enter their teens. Most kids do not outgrow the problem.

Recycling gold
The economic and environmental impact
By Donn Powers

uring these challenging economic times, more and more consumers opt to sell their unwanted gold jewelry as a way of making some extra cash. If this sounds appealing to you, here are a few things you should know about this increasingly popular practice. A jeweler, pawn broker, gold refiner or scrap gold dealer will buy the stuff in the back of your jewelry box at a price based on the weight of its gold content, minus a handling fee. He melts down the jewelry, extracts the gold and sometimes some of the hardening agents, and resells it or uses it himself. You can pocket the cash or, if you prefer, many jewelers will trade the old jewelry in for something you like better. The gold content of jewelry is indicated in karats. Solid gold jewelry is 24 karats. Lesser jewelry has less gold content and more of other metals and hardening agents. Gold buyers will only pay for gold. With few exceptions, other metals have no resale value. Generally, the gold content of any piece of jewelry will be marked on it somewhere, on the inside of a ring or bracelet, and on the clip of a necklace or the back of an earring. For instance, a 14-karat piece of jewelry may actually have 14 karat inscribed on it in tiny lettering, or the lettering may say 14/24 or 14K. The less gold content in a piece of jewelry, the less money it will be worth to anyone who intends to melt it down. When you buy jewelry in a jewelry store, you are paying for the design and craftsmanship, as well as any precious and semi-precious stones that may be a part of the piece. A beautifully designed piece of jewelry may have more resale value as used or estate jewelry than it will have as recycled gold. If you think that might be the case, get the piece appraised.

Gold metal recycling is one way to decrease the amount of gold that needs to be mined....You have an opportunity to go green, right there in your jewelry box.
planet. Gold metal recycling is one way to decrease the amount of gold that needs to be mined. Instead of holding onto gold jewelry that you know you will never wear again, it might be best to recycle it, if not for the money, then for the fact that you are helping our environment. You have an opportunity to go green, right there in your jewelry box. It is helpful to know that recycling gold is not just limited to gold jewelry. There are many other gold items that are considered recyclable. You may not realize it, but gold can be found in a surprising amount of items around your house. Some items on the list include cell phones, television sets, small electronics, and even music players. You can even recycle gold from computers. Gold is a precious metal that conducts both heat and electricity, so it is found in many household items. Recycling gold from electronics is a great way to make a small profit. Many people do not realize that when they throw away old electronics, they are throwing away bits of this precious metal. In fact, some people take advantage of this fact and go through electronics that have been thrown away so that precious metals such as gold can be extracted from them.
Donn Powers is owner and president of Donn Powers Jeweler, a full service jewelry store located in the heart of downtown South Milwaukee at 2110 10th Ave. Donn Powers Jeweler uses recycled precious metals in all its fine jewelry, guaranteeing our customers an eco-friendly jewelry product of the highest quality. Our reclaimed metals come from numerous post-consumer sources, including existing jewelry, industrial-use metals, and electronics components. Every piece we cast is made with 100% recycled and re-refined precious metals. For more information, visit www.donnpowersjeweler.com.

Environmental impact

Currently, only about one third of our gold usage every year is made up of recycled gold. We wouldnt have to mine this precious metal if more people chose to recycle gold jewelry. It is imperative that gold mining be reduced as much as possible to protect our

LSVs an alternative in alternative energy vehicles

By Bob Mair
Submitted photo, Roger Russove R2 Marketing

lectric cars have been in the news a lot lately, and its easy to understand why. With offerings currently available from Ford, Nissan and Smart, as well as upcoming models from Toyota, Volkswagen, BMW, Mitsubishi and more, there is plenty of buzz for electric vehicles. Fuel prices over $3.50/gallon have also opened drivers eyes to electric power as they look to lower transportation costs. These full capability EVs have their drawbacks, however. High sticker prices, limited highway range and a scarcity of charging stations are a few of the concerns holding back electric vehicle sales. Depending on your transportation needs, however, there are options available. If your driving is done in town, an LSV, low speed electric vehicle, may be the perfect fit for you and your family. LSVs operate at speeds just under 30 miles per hour and have a range of around 40 miles. That makes an LSV the ideal grocery getter great for taking the children to school, a visit to a friends house or a night out on the town. LSVs charge on standard 110V household power, so you can plug in anywhere an electrical outlet is available to you. The low speed would also make an LSV a great vehicle for a young driver to learn in. LSVs are perfect for commercial use, too. Columbia ParCar, located in Reedsburg, Wis., and distributed by MEE Material Handling, offers low speed trucks in a variety of configurations for your manufacturing

complex, campground, farm or campus. LSVs are perfect indoors or out as they are completely emission-free and whisper quiet. Use it all day and then plug it in at night so you and your LSV are ready for the next day on the job. Whether you need to haul people, product or just get from one place to the next as quickly as possible, a low speed vehicle is available to fit your needs. The newest LSVs are a lot more than streetlegal golf carts. With solid doors, windshields with wipers, and the full complement of lights including turn signals, an LSV is much more like a car than ever. Star EV of South Carolina, also distributed by MEE Material Handling, offers unique looking LSVs like the Smile Car, pictured. Equipped with all the safety features you want for safe driving around town, as well as comfort features like AM/FM/CD stereos, heaters, leather seating, aluminum wheels and more. LSVs offer great value, too. The Star Smile sells for under $10,000, which includes an AM/FM stereo with CD player, locking doors and all the latest NHTSA safety equipment. Other models can sell for even less, depending on equipment. Cost to charge an LSV is less than $2, based on local electric rates. That means your per mile electricity cost is less than 5 cents. A gas powered car would need

to get over 70 miles/gallon to be as economical. Even though todays hybrid vehicles can approach that mileage level, they dont match the emission-free operation of an LSV. Low speed vehicles arent for everyone, but as you can see, they are an option if you want to own an affordable, easy to own electric vehicles today. If youre looking for a vehicle that costs little to operate, is reasonably priced to purchase, and helps preserve our planet and its natural resources, an LSV may be the perfect choice for you and your family. To learn more about the low speed vehicles featured in this article, visit www. meelift.com and click on the Columbia ParCar or Star EV links. For more information about purchasing your own LSV, e-mail Bob Mair, Major Account/Fleet Manager at bmair@meelift.com.
Bob Mair has been employed with MEE Material Handling since 2006. He moved into the sale of LSVs in 2008, and has sold LSVs to residential and commercial customers throughout Wisconsin. He has participated in advanced product training programs with Columbia ParCar and Star EV. Bob has participated in many events throughout Wisconsin to teach the public the benefits of LSVs and electric-powered vehicles.

Natural boredom busters for holiday travel with kids

By Kara S. Anderson

ccording to the American Automotive Association, more than 40 million people will be traveling this holiday season, and many of them will be families with young children. It can be a lot to ask of kids to spend long hours in the car, even if the eventual pay-off is warm cups of cocoa, time with cousins or holiday gifts. For some families, portable DVD players and other electronics make travel less stressful for everyone. But many families look for a more natural approach to keeping kids entertained on long car trips. One way to meet each childs individual needs is to pack a special bag full of personalized treats and boredom busters that will keep kids busy en route and make hours on the road a little easier for everyone. The following are 8 ideas for things to pack to make car trips this holiday season a lot more fun, naturally:

homemade cookies or muffins, granola bars, apple or orange slices, popcorn, crackers, fruit leather, trail mix, etc. The key is to keep snacks low in sugar. Packing each child a reusable water bottle is a nice, healthy touch that saves money on the road.

Art supplies

Audiobooks

Audiobooks are available through bookstores and online as well as through many local libraries (and through Audible.com). They can be shared by all, or listened to quietly through the use of headphones. Some popular family favorites include James Herriot, Geronimo Stilton, A to Z Mysteries, Little House on the Prairie, The Magic Treehouse series and the Harry Potter books.

Regular books

Used book sales and online sites like Half.com and Amazon are a great way to purchase inexpensive second-hand books for long trips. Not only will you save money, but trees as well. Buying used books is also a great alternative when you dont want to worry about traveling with library property, but you want a large selection.

Paper, crayons, markers and stickers are always fun, as are supplies for making postcards to send or letters (or holiday cards) to mail. Adding a few stamped envelopes makes it really special and gives kids a fun job to do. Especially for young children, it helps to bring items that keep little hands busy. Silly putty, sewing cards, or pasta to lace into necklaces require both dexterity and concentration. Stickers and felt or magnetic sets are really good for keeping kids engrossed. Puzzle pages and workbooks can be entertaining for older children, and Mad Libs can get the whole family involved in the fun. Some ideas and props for car games can make travel feel like something to celebrate. Pack an inexpensive map to cross off license plates from other states, or a picture checklist of items to spot. Up the ante with a disposable camera and a list of challenges to photograph during the journey. A blanket, slippers and a favorite animal friend can go a long way toward helping kids feel snug and secure on the road. With a little planning, holiday travel can not only be stress-free, it can be a fun adventure for everyone. Dont forget to save a few special surprises for the trip back. A special gift-wrapped book, or a few holiday treats, can make the long drive home still feel like a special part of the journey.

Snacks are not an activity, of course, but kids love it when they have easy access to their own treats. Healthy favorites include
