Literature/Listening Station
A space for students to listen to tapes of books, songs, stories, and poems as they follow along with the text. Create a space with comfortable seating where students wont be distracted by too many other sounds. Materials Needed: Text, tape player/I pod/cd player, headphones, pencils, paper/reflection sheets. Ask students to complete a response worksheet and/or draw a picture of their reactions or favorite part of the story. Resources: Organization, Response Form Examples
Independent/Group Activity
This station gives students the opportunity to work independently on the concept(s) learned at the teacher station. The students in the group serve as a support system for each other when working independently from the teacher. Students should complete a project, activity, or assignment to demonstrate comprehension of concept. Steps for working independently of the teacher should be clearly outlined and visible to everyone in the group.
Computer Station
Help students make the best of their limited computer time by organizing files and software and by preparing bookmarks/favorites for appropriate internet resources. Use the computer to support your curriculum. You may have students work on the same activity or designate a different role for each computer. Supply a spreadsheet listing the objectives for each computer assignment and have a space for students to write in their scores after they complete each activity.
Teacher Station
Maximize individual instructional time by working with a small group on a new concept or by re-teaching directly while other students work independently or in groups. Take advantage of the small group to conduct both formal and informal formative assessments of each student. Model and outline expectations for the students when they move to the independent and group activity station. Create groups that will support and hold each other accountable.
