CHAPTER 1

Introduction:
1.1 Background:
Excellent hotel security is an absolute necessity, and must be designed and implemented to ensure guests feel safe, but not restricted or inconvenienced. Hotel security is a never ending task of balancing guest security and guest comfort. Ongoing media coverage of terrorist attacks and crime keep security issues in the spotlight and guests are very conscious of their security needs. A lodging property can be targeted by many threats which include both internal and external threats. Internal threats may include robberies and thefts and external threats may include the bomb threats, suicide bombings and equipment bombings which are on a very high level at present. Security may also include the staff of the employees of a lodging property. To prevent such threats, both internal and external security measures should be strictly considered.

1.2 Research Objectives:

Our approach is to minimize the loss which local hotel industry is facing due to security situation in Pakistan. Security threats to hotels resulted in loss of guests; investors etc. The confidence of guest can only be gain if the hotels improve and modernize its security system and maintain those security standards and make sure that they are effective. Secondly, to make them realize that security is a very vast department and its a never ending task. There is always chance of improvement in it. The security standards should be monitored and should be improved. There is always space of improvement in security standards.

1.3 Research Limitations:

1) The risk assessment is no longer an option for hotels, but rather a necessary tool. 2) The security manager and his or her team must be professionally trained and qualified to deal with today's contemporary hotel security threats. 3) Hotels benefit from joining an industry organization whereby they can be kept abreast of measures that their competitors are taking in terms of hotel security.

4) Hotels must have an orderly system in place whereby they are periodically updated about the local and/or national security warning level by law-enforcement bodies. These are some of the limitations which are barriers to the security internationally and locally. So, some procedures should be implemented or undertaken to control the security issues for the guests, workforce as well as the economy.

1.4 Research Targets:

The key elements/targets of managing safety are: Safety and security of guests, employees, and other third parties. Supporting and developing high standards for all hotels locally and internationally. Maintaining and promoting security standards internally and externally.

1.5 Scope of Research:

Providing security in a hotel or motel is the broad task of protecting people guests, employees, and others assets. Terrorist attacks in hotels of Pakistan resulted in loss of guest as they moved into small hotel or motels which were less famous and not the main target of terrorists. People use to feel safe there as compare too large and famous five star hotels which were the main target of the terrorists. It is very hard to bring back the clientele of the hotels in current security situation. There are also crimes involving the theft of assets usually result in greater losses to lodging properties than crime against persons, but crime against persons have a greater effect on public relation, bad publicity, high marketing expenses and legal constraints and may result in high legal expenses.
