Improving Observational Learning Skills in Children with Autism

KEYNOTE

ASAT is a not-for-pro t organization of parents and professionals committed to improving the education, treatment, and care of people with autism. Since autism was rst identi ed, there has been a long history of failed treatments and fads, levied on vulnerable individuals as well as on their families. From the scandal of the refrigerator mother theory, to the ongoing parade of miracle cures and magical breakthroughs, history has been dominated by improbable theories about causation and treatments. Since ASAT was established in 1998, it has been our goal to work toward adopting higher standards of accountability for the care, education and treatment of all individuals with autism. It is commonly recognized that children with autism present with signi cant de cits in imitation and observational learning. Most contemporary curricula for children with autism incorporate instruction in a variety of imitative response topographies. Less common in applied research and practice, however, are procedures to ensure that children with autism learn to acquire novel responses through observational learning. This presentation will outline instructional programs that move beyond direct imitation to the skills essential for observational learning. Speci c procedures to increase observational learning in children with autism across a variety of responses will be reviewed.

2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

In a eld lled with countless intervention options, how do we know if any one intervention is helpful for a particular child? This presentation will use real-life case examples to describe how educators and parents can use key principles of science to inform decisions regarding intervention in young children with autism. Emphasis will be placed on consideration of interventions typically applied in the school and therapy settings (e.g., instructional supports, responses to behavioral challenges, therapies) and how deliberate use of the scienti c method can be used as part of a team approach to promoting best practices in intervention with young children with autism.
