I havent had any problems in my current abode (thank goodness), but in my previous house eesh. Built in 1923, it was basically an overpriced sieve. It had tons of character, which in realtor parlance means expensive problems that are not easily corrected. Theres nothing as disheartening as seeing water marks on the newly-reworked plaster ceilings you ordered to the tune of umpteen thousands of dollars. And the marks are just a symptom of the problem who knows what lies beneath? To the layman, its a vexing mystery. Thats where the professionals like Josh Ostrowski can be invaluable resources. Where you and I see water marks, he spots a miniscule entryway between the exterior and interior of your home and figures out how to fix it. Just as important, hes a roofer with a conscience recycling asphalt shingles to be added to pavement for roads. Check out what he has to say about it on pages 50-51. Not unrelated, were running an article from the Better Business Bureau on the dangers of unreliable, traveling home improvement contractors such as those who work on roofing, painting, asphalt work and installing security systems. Complaints about these types of individuals and companies, many of whom sweep into town after damaging storms occur, are on the rise. Thats why its so important to do your research and choose a local contractor you can trust. Look for a contractor with an established business in the area, ask for references and check them out. Also, look into the contractors standard of work and his professional affiliations; verify his insurance; and check to see if he needs

to be licensed. Check with the BBB for a report on the contractor. Sound advice for anyone who needs work done. Finally, you hear a lot about gluten these days: its bad for you, how so many people cant tolerate it, how to avoid it, etc. But unless youve been properly diagnosed with Celiac Disease a condition in which gluten is treated like an invader by the immune system, resulting in damage to the intestines, low energy levels and emotional ups and downs what do you really know about it? Dan Stearns explains it all in his article on a gluten-free diet. Be sure to check it out because theres lots of valuable information. Have a healthy, happy July!

Discover wellness treasures in rural communities

By Jennifer Culver, CPC The Wautoma, Wis., motto a few years ago was Small Town, Big Dream, when the high school football team set out for the state competition. This hymn is still relevant in Wautoma and other small communities found in key people and businesses striving to make a difference. Cathy Favelle, of Anya Advanced Skin Care and Yoga in Wautoma, demonstrates this mantra beautifully. A long-time resident, yoga practitioner and entrepreneur in the community, she built upon her passion of sharing her love and gifts with others in her home town by obtaining her yoga teacher certification in 2009. She joyfully empowers others to improve their inner and outer beauty through her skincare studio and her yoga instruction. Cathy has been an avid fitness enthusiast and yoga practitioner for more than 30 years, with a personal connection to Vinyasa flow, but the closest studio where she could practice Vinyasa was 40 minutes away. Her goal two years ago was to bring all the powerful benefits of a quality yoga program, accessible to all fitness levels, into her own community where she could practice and share her passion for yoga. She exceeded her dream, with her classes frequently filled to capacity and her clientele absorbing her positive, light-hearted energy. Her students range in age from 20 to her oldest student, who was 100 years old as of May. Last year, Cathy saw another need within her community when some of her senior students approached her with concerns about the floor work involved in class. She acquired additional training in Yoga for Seniors and Yoga Therapy in Asheville, N.C., and came home to create Rock Your Chair Yoga/Sculpt, a wellrounded yoga and fitness program at the Waushara-Wautoma Senior Center geared specifically to seniors. that all people are young, vibrant, funloving, and adventure seeking, regardless of age. Additionally, Cathy teaches Yoga Fusion at Club TEAM fitness center in Wautoma, mixing Vinyasa flow, Pilates and Yoga/ Sculpt available to all levels. With her love of adventure and the outdoors, she is expanding her offerings to include Yoga for Sports Conditioning and additional outdoor yoga adventure workshops and retreats. A challenge, not unique to a small community, is the perception that yoga is solely a meditative, sitting practice. Cathy loves opening the minds of all athletes to the cross-training opportunities of yoga for strength, core work, endurance, balance, focus, breath and coordination. As an athletic person herself, she values adding yoga to a training regime to advance to a new level and stay in the game injury-free and with vitality. Cathy is excited to further demonstrate this integration in an upcoming retreat titled Life is a Beach Aug. 12-13 hosted at Camp Lakotah, Wautoma.

All things are possible; remember, age is only a number and always look to your heart, the very core of your spirit.happiness and balance lie within.
( She and Deb Sommerhalder, owner of Inner Sun Yoga of Oshkosh, will team to produce their second yoga and wellness retreat. Their successful January 2011 SNOGA event sold out fast integrating snowshoeing, yoga and other activities. This is another example of bringing greatness to a rural community, for the betterment of all who participate. For Cathy, this is just the beginning. She sees a window a light that really gets her excited for the future and its opportunities, happiness and wellness. She wishes to expand her retreat and adventure opportunities, while continually appreciating the natural beauty and simplicity of the outdoor area in her own backyard. All of this is possible through the support of the community at large, the local Chamber of Commerce organization, the local establishments working together, a network of wellness, energy practitioners, musicians, and the like coming together, and most notably her loving husband, David. Cathys positive mind-set and experience provides her clients faith when there is doubt, love when there is fear and an opportunity for a longer, happier life when there are limitations. The goal she aspires to for all is that of transformation. All things are possible; remember age is only a number and always look to your heart, the very core of your spirit.happiness and balance lie within. When you discover balance in your life through the powerful integration of body, mind and spirit you can take yourself to new heights and literally learn to expand your wings and take flight. How coconut oil can benefit your pet

hen many of us think of coconuts, we think of tropical islands in faraway places, suntan lotion and pina coladas. But oil made from coconuts may be an amazing health food for both our 2-legged and 4-legged family members. According to the Coconut Research Center (, coconut (cocos nucifera) oil has been used to treat everything from abscesses, asthma, baldness, bronchitis, bruises, burns, colds, constipation, cough and much more. Reported to be anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic, its said to increase immunity and help fight off many illnesses ranging from cancer to dental cavities. It may provide relief from kidney problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, cancer and osteoporosis. Coconut oil can help us look and feel younger by helping to fight

the signs of aging, including wrinkles, age spots and sagging skin, by providing valuable essential fatty acids (EFAs) and fighting free radicals that cause oxidation, degeneration of the cells and aging. In pets, coconut oil has many of the same benefits but instead of promoting fewer wrinkles and healthy skin, pets enjoy healthier skin and a healthier, more beautiful coat. Lower in calories than other saturated fats, coconut oil helps promote healthy weight by increasing energy, promoting healthy thyroid function and metabolic rate. Many of the health benefits of coconut oil are attributed to unique key ingredients: omega fats, lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid. Lauric acid is a rare medium-chain fatty acid found in human breast milk and it makes up about 50 percent of coconut oil. Lauric acid supports healthy metabolism. Another key component is in the medium-chain fatty acid. Most of the fats, by far, that we eat as Americans (including fats in meat, dairy products, margarine, vegetable oils and shortening) are from animals or plants and are composed of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA). Coconut oil is made of mostly medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). The MCFAs in coconut oil are what cause it to have so many health benefits. Among other differences, MCFAs are more prone to create energy instead of turning to fat when metabolized.

The benefit to pets:

Natures Pathways | July 2011

Taken internally, coconut oil may help promote healthy bones and joints, a healthy metabolism and weight, healthy thyroid function and support against fungi, viruses, bacteria and parasites in dogs, cats and other animals. Coconut oil will also promote healthy skin and a beautiful, lush coat.

Taken topically, coconut can be used on ears, cuts, wounds, mouth sores, and dry, cracked paw pads. As with anything else you will give your pet, its best to find organic and non-GMO (non-genetically-modified) coconut oil whenever possible. Always choose unrefined oil, also described as virgin oil. The cold-pressed method is best. Look for one that is processed very quickly after its harvested, preserving as much nutrition, freshness and taste as possible. Different brands of coconut oil will have different tastes ranging from a bland taste, to a strong coconut taste, to a more buttery taste. Solid or liquid coconut oil can be added to food at any meal or given between meals. Solid coconut oil can easily be melted quickly in hot water. A general guideline for the optimal dose for dogs is about 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight daily or about 1 tablespoon per 30 pounds, but dont start with these amounts in the beginning! Large amounts of coconut oil given to a dog can cause diarrhea or greasy stools while his body adjusts to the change in diet. Start with small amounts, such as teaspoon per day for small dogs or puppies, and 1 teaspoon for large dogs, or even just a dab if your dogs constitution is sensitive. If your dog seems tired or uncomfortable or has diarrhea, just cut back the amount temporarily. It may also be helpful to give small amounts of coconut oil in divided doses throughout the day. Gradually increase the

amount every few days. Because coconut oil kills bacteria, viruses, parasites, yeasts and fungi, your pet may respond negatively to the detox aspect of taking coconut oil. Signs of detoxing too rapidly may include lethargy, headaches, flu-like symptoms, fatigue and diarrhea. Coconut oil is best given with food. Most dogs like the taste of coconut oil so you wont have trouble feeding it to them. If you apply it to their skin and they try to lick it off, try wrapping the skin in a rag or towel for a few minutes to let the oil soak in before they get a chance to lick it off.

Do you have a Sherpa?

By Trish Poole Recently I went to Deer Park Buddhist Center. It is a beautiful center established in Oregon, Wis., by people committed to practicing Buddhism within the tradition developed by Tibetan spiritual masters and scholars. It is named after the place near Benaras, where Buddha Shakyamuni gave his first teachings after attaining enlightenment. While I am not committed to Buddhism, I like to visit very spiritual places both here in Wisconsin and

overseas. We have many such places in Wisconsin; Aztalan State Park, Our Lady of Good Help, Deer Park and many more. When I visit these types of places I will often have dreams about them before and after my visit. I am a lucid dreamer, which means that when I am dreaming I can

enter my dream and actively participate in it. It is something I have done since my college years and is like dream yoga, which was practiced as early as the 8th century by Tibetan Buddhists; during dream yoga the dreamer maintains full waking consciousness while in the dream state.

In my dream last night, a Yoga master was teaching me a few things and asked me if I had a Sherpa. I wasnt sure what a Sherpa was. He suggested I engage one and perhaps share the idea of engaging one with others. Then he went on to explain more about energy healing. Ive learned that during my lucid dreams when I am connecting with someone I am unfamiliar with, it is best for me to just be aware and do what I can to take the information in. After I awaken I can write down what was discussed and look up words I do not know or recognize. If I get too excited about the information I am hearing, I will end up waking myself out of the state, so after what seemed an eternity of more information about the energy healing and the temple, I woke up with the word Sherpa on my mind. In looking it up I found that the Sherpa people live in the Himalayas and that they are considered the experts in navigating those mountains, especially well-known Mt. Everest. So clearly he was using the word Sherpa as a sort of metaphor for teacher or guide. Of course! He was encouraging me to

engage someone who has walked the path before me. Its not brain surgery, but it is a worthwhile consideration to be sure. If there is someone who has already worked through the difficult passages and knows a way to make them easier or a safer way to pass through them, it stands to reason that I engage them or at least align with their energy to gain insight into how to address whatever the challenge may be. Over the years I have had a variety of wonderful and inspiring mentors or Sherpas and am so grateful to them. Do you have a Sherpa, or maybe a few? Remember to engage them, get their input. Your Sherpa can accelerate your learning curve and

facilitate difficult situations. We are all here on the planet for one another. Each of us has something special and unique to teach and share. I know some of you will be wondering if I mean our spirit guides. Our loved ones whove crossed over? Who? To those of you who would wonder that, I would say, yes, all of them. We have a family of love and light, whether they are in physical form or not, we are always connected.

Why we love Oprah

By Nancy Freier Oprahs last show just aired and I am bursting at the seams to pay tribute to her and what shes become to so many people. The quotes are excerpted from Oprahs love letter from The Oprah Winfrey Show Finale that aired on May 25. What the world needs now is someone, or something a vision bigger than ourselves to believe in. For 25 years, Oprah did that very well. She captured our attention by spotlighting our problems and either solved them, or made us feel like we were not the only ones experiencing them. She entertained us. She made us laugh. She made us cry, and she made us look at life in a uniquely Oprah way. Underneath it all was a common thread that bound us together for an hour, for 4,561 days of our lives that she took to the airwaves. It was her spiritual nature that shined through everything she did. The glow attracted us. She became a beacon of light in a world of people in need of a leader of truth. For 25 years she was that idol, that shining star. People came on her show broken, abused, lost and looking for

help. She turned on the stage lights and turned on our lights. It was clear to me that she tuned in and listened to her inner voice through all of it. As I write this, I reflect on her show and wonder why so many people love Oprah so much and for so long. I believe thats because she got it and then she became a mirror for us. In that love letter to her viewers, Oprah said, Soon after I started the show, something shifted for me... Something in me connected with each of you in a way that allowed me to see myself in you and you in a professional designer coming into your home or office. me. I became your surrogate to ask the She rearranges what you have to help you get what you want questions, deliver the answers, learn, grow, without spending a fortune. expand my thinking, challenge my beliefs and the way I looked at the world. It is no coincidence that I always wanted to be a teacher and I Better health, greater wealth, happy relationships! ended up in the worlds biggest classroom. What I knew for sure from this experience with you is that we are all called. Everybody has a calling, and your real job Nancy Freier in life is to figure out what that is and get Graduate of the Western School of Feng Shui about the business of doing it... to know what sparks the light in you so that you, in your own way, can illuminate the world... My great wish for all of you who have allowed me to honor my calling through this show is that you carry whatever youre supposed to be doing, carry that forward and dont waste any more time. Start embracing the life that is calling you and use your life to serve the world. Nobody but you is responsible for your life. It doesnt matter what your mama did; it doesnt matter what your daddy didnt do... You are responsible for the energy that you create for yourself, and youre responsible for the energy that you bring to others. People often ask me, What is the secret of success of the show? How have we lasted 25 years? I non-jokingly say, My team and Jesus. Because nothing but the hand of God has made this possible for me... I know Ive never been alone, and you havent either. And I know that that presence, that flow some people call it grace is working in my life at every single turn. And yours, too, if you let it in. Its closer than your breath, and it is yours for the asking.

I have felt the presence of God my whole life. Even when I didnt have a name for it, I could feel the voice bigger than myself speaking to me, and all of us have that same voice. Be still and know it... In a nutshell, spirituality is all about recognizing that inner voice, turning up the volume and following it to live our passion. Oprah led us to this. Now we must find our own stage and shine our Light. Thank you, Oprah, for bringing us to this moment. This is why we love her.

Average Jane rides the bus

Recently, I set out on an adventure. For one week, I decided to park the car and ride Valley Transit. I knew I would save money by not driving, but I had no idea I would meet so many interesting people during my bus travels. I had a few questions, too. Namely, how do I get where I need to go? Im not great at deciphering maps so I was happy to find out Valley Transit had a Google trip planner on its Web site. Ive used Google countless times to get driving directions and was happy to learn I could do the same thing with my bus trips. I started with my trip to work. The Google link on Valley Transits site gave me all the information I needed to take my trip. I simply entered my home address, my destination and the time I wanted to arrive at work. Within seconds I had walking directions to my bus stop, the time the bus would arrive, which bus I needed to transfer to and walking directions from my bus to work. It even compared my bus cost to driving. For this trip, I paid a cash fare of $1.80 and received a free transfer to my connecting bus. Driving would have cost me $3.63. I discovered a bonus while on the busthey have free Wi-Fi! My trip to work was a bit longer by bus than driving, but the bus was more economical and I could use my time usually spent driving for more fun things, like buying music on iTunes with the free Wi-Fi service on board. By my second day, I discovered that I could save even more money by purchasing a 10-Ride Ticket. They also had 30-Day Passes and Day Passes available. I continued the week taking the bus to work, the mall and even the grocery store. Weve all heard the rumors about empty buses, but I have to say, many of the routes I rode, particularly during the peak times in the morning and evening, were very full. I thoroughly enjoyed my week using Valley Transit, but it was the people I encountered on the bus who made the biggest impression. From the helpful and courteous bus drivers to the passengers themselves, I learned that the bus is truly a community. When someone who is usually on the bus isnt, other riders ask about them. They have conversations about summer plans, school, debate about whether or not the Brewers will have a good season and other topics. There were people on the bus because they had no other form of transportation and there were others who, like me, chose to leave their car at home. Had I not taken the bus I wouldve missed meeting the rider with a huge smile who tells everyone, Hey, do me a favor? Have a great day! Ive decided to continue riding the bus at least five times a month. With a little planning, its easy and with Wi-Fi on board, its fun. But its the people I met that most make me want to keep riding. And, the money I save will help support my soy vanilla latte addiction. For more information on Valley Transit, visit or call 920.832.5800.

Is a gluten-free diet what youve been waiting for?

By Dan Stearns What could be the difference between feeling great vs. feeling run-down and even depressed? Can you believe it might just be gluten? Gluten, the protein found in wheat, rye and barley, is essentially indigestible for individuals with Celiac Disease, a condition in which gluten is treated like an invader by the immune system, resulting in damage to the intestines, low energy levels and emotional ups and downs. In fact, the authors of a recent study concerning Celiac Disease concluded that an estimated 2 million people may have the disease and not even realize it. In this research, headed by Dr. Katri Kaukinen, 3,031 people with relatives that had the disease (but considered themselves symptomfree) were randomly selected to go on a gluten-free diet or stick with their normal diet that contained gluten. Those eating a gluten-free diet felt better much better. So great was their improvement in gastrointestinal health and overall wellness, that 85 percent of the participants wanted to continue their gluten-free diet. There are also lots of people who dont have full-blown Celiac Disease, but who have some level of gluten sensitivity. Therefore, more people are interested in eliminating gluten. It can certainly be a challenge, since gluten is an ingredient that shows up in unlikely products, like salad dressing and ketchup. We see a tremendous difference in the health of people who have even moderate gluten sensitivities, says Debra Lemerond, owner and manager of Caffe Naturally, a Green Bay restaurant that specializes in organic, gluten-free meals. Healthy food should taste amazing. I think that our customers are surprised that gluten-free can taste so good. Plus, we want people to have a worry-free experience. Unfortunately, most restaurants prepare gluten-free entrees in kitchens

where gluten is present most of the time, but we are truly a gluten-free restaurant, so there is no potential contamination with gluten. This is really important to a lot of people on a gluten-free diet. Some of the problems with gluten may go back to the fact that historically, humans have only been cultivating gluten-rich grains for a very short time. We see people who begin to follow the caveman diet, and focus on proteins, healthy fats, berries, nuts and other more traditional foods show a dramatic improvement in their health, Lemerond says. Plus, if you still want to get some grains, there are more options out there than most people imagine. One of these options is sprouted grain breads that are rich in nutrients and fiber, but not in the problematic gluten proteins that can cause allergy-like reactions. Another option is to bake your own breads with traditional grains like amaranth, brown rice flour and tapioca flour. For people with Celiac Disease, the one sure way to control symptoms is to avoid gluten. But there can be many instances of accidental gluten ingestion causing inflammation. There are supplements that can help, including high-AKBA (acetyl-11-keto- B-boswellic acids) boswellia extract which is especially helpful for reducing inflammation throughout the body, including the digestive tract. Combine this with a highly-absorbable curcumin extract, and youll be able to reduce the irritation in your intestines that can occur no matter how vigilant you are with your diet. Experts advise to look for a curcumin that has been micronized and blended with turmeric oils because curcumin is notoriously hard to absorb. In fact, this special form is absorbed and retained in the

bloodstream up to 10 times more effectively than a curcumin 95 percent extract, so its worth it to find the right Boswellia-Curcumin combination. Additionally, probiotics can make a big difference. Top probiotics include Lactobacillus acidophilus, a fairly common probiotic with decades of research supporting its digestive benefits, and Bifidobacterium longum, bifidum and lactis are also a good bet. Combining your probiotic intake with fructooligosaccharides (FOS) that act as a food for the beneficial bacteria is a good way to help them colonize faster. Also consider a deglycyrrhizinated licorice extract, commonly known as DGL. Traditionally, DGL has been available in a chewable form, but there are newer clinically-studied versions that are encapsulated and work at lower doses around 300 mg. When you take this DGL blended with probiotics, it really provides soothing relief (and healing effects) for the gut. There is a life after going gluten free, and its probably the one youve wanted to have for a long time. It can be a challenge, no doubt. There may be times when youve ingested gluten but not realized it, until you notice symptoms. But by choosing healthy, gluten-free foods, with some supplemental back-up, youll have more energy, rid yourself of irritating (and sometimes debilitating) gut symptoms, and feel more emotionally balanced than you have for a long time. Give gluten-free a try. It may be the diet youve been waiting for.

How to find a wig that works

By Mark P. Brettingen his scenario unfortunately hits home for many of us at some point in our lives: the frustration of losing our hair and the psychological aspects that go hand in hand. Hair loss is disturbing as it can greatly affect our appearance, but as important our perception of how we feel others see us. Thinning hair makes us feel older and can become all-consuming. Today, I would like to touch on the topic of one option of replacing ones hair that many women gravitate to: full wigs. There are situations that arise where a wig is indeed the best solution. The loss of hair resulting from chemotherapy, trichotillomania (an

impulse control disorder where individuals pull out their own hair), radiation treatments to the scalp creating permanent hair loss and occasionally very extensive genetic female pattern hair loss, all create the need for a full wig. There are many options when it comes to wigs. It can be overwhelming as there are many things to consider when choosing a wig. There are inexpensive machinemade wigs, hand-tied wigs, synthetic and human hair wigs, wigs with highlights and wigs with lowlights. It becomes very confusing to the average person. Many think that human hair is the best solution and indeed certain types of human hair are fantastic; however, other types are very coarse, thick and unmanageable. Synthetic wigs vary tremendously as well. Synthetic fibers can appear very shiny and look like they belong on a dolls head. In contrast, other high-end synthetics can easily be mistaken for high-quality, fine, human hair. Wigs need to look good, but they need to fit properly so they are as comfortable as possible. Most wigs have way too much hair left in them, which takes away from the natural appearance desired. A professional that specializes in this area can help you with this challenge and assist you in making the correct decision for your particular desires.

Financial Makeover Challenge winner named Goodwills Outstanding Achiever

By Karen Kramer Participating in the 2011 Money Smart Week Fox Cities Financial Makeover Challenge was a life-altering experience for Melanie Marasch of Combined Locks, and all of her hard work paid off when she was named this years winner. She also received further recognition when named the Outstanding Achiever for June by Goodwill Industries of North Central Wisconsin. She was awarded this honor because, during the four-month Challenge, she worked with a financial counselor from the Financial Information and Service Center (FISC), a program of Goodwill. Thank you so much, Marasch said. This whole experience has changed our lives. Marasch and her 13-year-old son, Bailey, were among the four families honored at a May 6 program at the History Museum at the Castle in downtown Appleton for their participation in the third annual Financial Makeover Challenge. As the winner, Marasch received the first-place cash prize of $3,500. The other three families, who each received a $750 cash prize, included Tracy Buksyk of Neenah, April and Craig Schmidt of Kaukauna, and Barbara and David Lewandoski of Appleton. From December through April, the

participants met with financial counselors from FISC to improve their financial situations. The selection of the winner was based on which family came closest to meeting their financial goals by the April 15 deadline. FISC counselor Dana Berger worked with Marasch throughout the Challenge. Functional training equipment, summer temptations and fitness trackers

Expert answers to your health and wellness questions

By Karmen Nenahlo Question: Do you have any thoughts on some of the new functional training equipment on the market things like TRX bands for example? Answer: Generally speaking, Im a fan of TRX bands and other pieces of functional training equipment. Things like TRX, the ViPR and the Rip-Core FX are taking the fitness industry by storm, and for good reason. Theyre new, innovative, and fun to use. But best of all, theyre functional, which means that using them allows you to mimic traditional daily activities, thereby improving movement, balance, coordination, and strength all at the same time. Thats pretty cool! The only real concern here is that people may not know how to use these pieces of equipment properly, which could potentially result in injury. Theres definitely a learning curve with these products, so its best to watch the experts first. I also strongly recommend working with a trainer until youre

completely comfortable with the training methodology. As always, the goal is to educate yourself so you can get the most out of whatever training you decide to do! Question: How do I manage my food intake during the summer, especially with all the events, get-togethers and goodies seemingly everywhere? Help! Answer: Interestingly enough, the answer depends almost entirely on you. Assuming youre susceptible to sweets and other treats, you really only have three options go all-out and worry about the ramifications later, avoid them at all costs, or take a reasoned approach and indulge to a modest degree. I think most people would argue that the third idea is the best one. After all, why not treat yourself to a few goodies, especially if you can limit yourself to one or two here and there. And dont forget to continue with your workouts during this time as well. Restricting foods that you truly enjoy will only increase your cravings for them, and make for an unhappy holiday season. Bottom line it comes down to choice, and you can choose to make healthy decisions or not, but you have to be realistic. Keep variety, moderation, and

balance in mind, and reward yourself for being active all year long! Question: Several friends are using Web sites to track their nutrition and fitness, and theyre trying to get me to do the same. Do you think these health and wellness sites are worth the time, money and effort? Answer: Ultimately, it depends on the individual. However, research has proven that consistent monitoring and added accountability can pay off in the long run when youre looking to make lifestyle changes. This can come in many forms, but one of the most popular these days is certainly through the use of web sites. They can be a great tool as you try to change your behaviors, and may be just what you need to maintain your motivation. There are a number of options out there, from basic nutrition or fitness tracking sites to others that offer a wide variety of capabilities in all areas of health and wellness. I have to admit that Im biased when it comes to this discussion. Anytime Fitness has created one of the most progressive, comprehensive, and fun Web sites to use if youre looking to facilitate your own health and wellness. Its called Anytime Health (! The site has a diet tracker, an activity tracker, a workout planner that uses over 300 high-definition videos, as well as a robust community with a Q&A section, support groups, a contest page and a site blog. And these features are just the tip of the iceberg. If you get a chance, check it out. You can sign-up for a free account that gives you somewhat limited access, and if you like what you see, you can join for a nominal yearly fee.

Whats the value of a penny?

By Charles Schmalz he road to financial success is paved with pennies. Although a penny may seem insignificant today, its been said that the road to financial ruin begins with as little as a 2 penny difference. If you earn $1 and spend $.99, youre OK. But, spend $1.01 and youre heading for trouble. Thats the 2-penny difference. No new economic theory beats this old favorite: a penny saved is a penny earned. As Calvin Coolidge once said, There is no independence quite as important as living

within your means. If youre interested in financial success, start by spending less and saving pennies. Here are a few steps to start you on your way. After following these steps for several months you should see a significant difference in your financial picture: 1. Establish a spending plan Draw up a spending plan for the entire family. that you cant spend more than you earn. Eliminate any nonessential items from your spending list. Its important to have a written plan. Now comes the hard part. Stick to it! 2. Avoid unnecessary or impulsive purchases The whole world is having a sale these days. Dont be lured by a so-called sale. In many cases, these are the items you usually dont need at a price you cant refuse. 3. stick to necessities Before purchasing an item, ask yourself, Do I really need this? Think about your purchases and plan to buy only the things you need. 4. Bargain shop Buy quality products at a discount. When it comes to high-ticket items, brush up on your bargaining ability. 5. Buy secondhand Youd be amazed at what high-quality items can be purchased on a secondhand basis. 6. Borrow with care Dont use your credit for impulse buying. Addressing the root cause of breast pain

By Dr. David Janssen reast cancer, the most common type of cancer diagnosed in women, has received considerable attention in medicine. Saving lives, reconstructing the breast and getting patients on the physical and emotional path to recovery have been the highlighted priorities. One area that needs more focus is the subject of nerve health and its connection to post-operative breast pain. Any surgical procedure performed to the breast needs this consideration, especially because of the intercostal nerves located in this area. These nerves send pain and other sensations to the arm from the chest. If they are damaged during surgery, the patient can experience chronic pain.

Natures Pathways | July 2011

Breast pain may interfere with sexual activity, exercise, social activity and employment.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, postoperative breast pain is a frequent issue reported by 50 percent of women following a breast procedure. Breast pain may interfere with sexual activity, exercise, social activity and employment. Women can experience nerve damage in any breast procedure. The risk of damage to the nerves seems to be at least as great in lumpectomy (partial removal of the breast) procedures as in mastectomy (full removal of the breast). Regardless of procedure performed, the surgeon needs to make every effort to best manage the nerves so the patient has the best possible outcome. In the case of mastectomies followed by reconstruction, the nerve pain is called post-mastectomy pain syndrome (PMPS). Post-mastectomy pain is also caused by damage to intercostal nerves. These nerves exit through the muscles of the chest wall, and provide sensation to the breast, shoulder and upper arm. These nerves may be cut by the surgeon in the process of removing lymph nodes if special consideration is not given to nerve health. However, even if the nerve is carefully preserved, some patients still have pain. There have been clinical studies performed world-wide on nerve health. The conclusion is that nerve preservation may decrease postoperative arm sensory disturbance and pain for stage I, II and III breast cancer patients. It should be noted that post-mastectomy pain syndrome can also be caused by a neuroma (abnormal tissue growth). Neuromas can form whenever peripheral nerves are severed or injured, causing pain and sensitivity. Chronic breast pain may impact a healthy recovery process. Non-surgical treatments for post-mastectomy pain syndrome include medication, physical therapy, acupuncture, massage or hypnosis. Today, more board-certified plastic surgeons have significant training and experience in nerve-sparing and nerve-connection techniques. As trained micro surgeons, plastic surgeons are able in some cases to micro dissect traumatized nerves and improve pain by manipulating the nerve end. If you have post mastectomy pain in a highly localized area, consider seeing a plastic surgeon with experience in managing post-operative breast pain. In some cases, surgical treatment to block nerves that are causing pain may be the best option. If you or someone you know is experiencing breast pain, please remember to consider nerve health. Be your own best advocate, do your research and ask a lot of questions.

Using hyperbaric oxygen therapy during cancer treatments

By Angela Saunders Cancer is such a frightening word, but it can absolutely terrify us when linked with someone we love. When it strikes, there is a lot to consider. How advanced is the cancer? What are your treatment options? Which treatment should you ultimately go with? Will it be all right to combine different types of treatments? What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy? Since the 1600s, doctors have been experimenting with forms of hyperbaric medicine. Modern-day treatments, developed by the military for diving operations, helped scuba divers recover from decompression sickness and air embolism. Since then, hyperbaric treatments have been used in hospitals for the treatment of such

things as burns and carbon monoxide poisoning. But the benefits of hyperbaric medicine do not stop there. It has been used to alleviate many health issues, including cancer. Can hyperbaric oxygen therapy really help cancer? Note the following comments: I utilize mild Hyperbaric Therapy (mHBT) in all stages of cancer; upon detection, as well as pre- and post-surgery, pre-,

post- and during chemo, and radiation. In fact, if chemotherapy is used in conjunction with mHBT, the chemotherapy dose must be reduced. The mHBT will potentate any primary cancer treatment. mHBT is the best cancer prevention and cancer remission therapy out there, bar none. (Bergeron, Rhett, M.D.) Most doctors are aware of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), even if they seldom prescribe this treatment, because oxygen applied to the body under pressure is approved for use in limited situations such as carbon monoxide poisoning, poorly healed wounds, gas embolism, and decompression illness. Very few physicians, however, are aware that oxygen therapies have far more advanced medical applications that are commonly used in many countries outside the United States. In Russia, Europe, China, Japan and Cuba, among others, oxygen therapies treat a broad range of conditions, such as arthritis, cancer, cerebral palsy, HIV, Lyme disease, optic neuritis, stroke and even multiple sclerosis. (Yutsis, Pavel I., M.D., Oxygen to the Rescue) Why is oxygen used? Disease thrives in an oxygen-deficient environment. Some bacteria, for instance, cannot survive in the presence of abundant oxygen. During hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the increased oxygen dissolves in your blood and circulates throughout your body. Regarding the effectiveness of oxygen in fighting disease, note these comments: applying increased oxygen to diseased cells in the human body revitalizes or changes the cell structure. (Yutsis, Pavel I., MD, Oxygen to the Rescue)

By increasing the oxygen environment to the cancer cells, it makes them less virulent and in many instances destroys them. (Yutsis, Pavel I., M.D., Oxygen to the Rescue) For the past 50 years, we have steadily been fighting cancer, and during that period, researchers and scientists have known that cancer develops in low oxygen environments. (Yutsis, Pavel I., M.D., Oxygen to the Rescue) Lack of oxygen clearly plays a major role in causing cells to become cancerous. (Goldblatt, Harry, M.D., Journal of Experimental Medicine) In all serious disease states we find a concomitant low oxygen stateLow oxygen in the body tissues is a sure indicator for diseaseHypoxia, or lack of oxygen in the tissues, is the fundamental cause for all degenerative disease. Oxygen is the source of life to all cells. (Levine, Stephen, MD, Oxygen Deficiency: A Concomitant to All Degenerative Illness) Due to the health benefits of oxygen, you may decide to take oxygen treatments in harmony with other health-care treatments. It is your decision. Make sure to check with your doctor first, and if your insurance does not cover hyperbaric oxygen treatments, free-standing hyperbaric clinics are available and are typically an economical choice.

Is your mouth kissable?

By William J. Twohig, D.D.S., N.M.D., I.B.D.M. A friend of mine recently shared her story with me. Her daughter was preparing for her junior prom. Her date arrived to pick her up for the evening ahead. As he politely smiled at the girls mother she became concerned. His teeth were covered with plaque and blood was visible between and along the gum tissue of his teeth. As a dentist, she began to think of the bacterial conditions occurring in his mouth. The young couple headed out the front door to their awaiting limousine. As the door closed the beautiful girl received a text message from her mother. Dont you dare kiss him!

Diabetes, heart disease, infertility and aching joints have all been positively linked with bacteria and viruses originating in your mouth.
As health-care providers and dentists, we have been trained to immediately think of decay-causing bacteria and periodontal disease (gum disease). Both of these common infections are the result of bacteria, viruses, fungi and others. We have also known for years that the bacteria, viruses and fungi in your mouth do not just remain in one place. There is just one cell thickness between them and the rest of your body. Once an infection is present, a simple cut or puncture to your tissues while eating and these bugs are off to the races. They manifest throughout your body to find another place to do their damage. Diabetes, heart disease, infertility and aching joints have all been positively linked with bacteria and viruses originating in your mouth. So what can we do? Good oral hygiene is extremely important but brushing and flossing alone are not enough. Even after brushing, bacteria are still present in your saliva and living on your soft tissues of your

mouth. Within minutes these organisms inoculate these areas again. You may want to consider Oxygen/Ozone treatments, Xylitol, natural plant-based products, probiotics, as well as visiting your dentist regularly. Once your mouth is healthy and free of harmful organisms, you must consider from where you might re-infect yourself. Our daily lives are filled with events in which we may exchange bacteria. Sharing a piece of food or anothers beverage, having a playful pet lick your face, even a kiss from a relative, are events where bacteria can be spread. Knowledge of oral systemic health needs to be taught more. Last October in Madison, I was privileged to join a group of 44 dentists, physicians, alternative health care providers and caring individuals to start the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health. AAOSH is an organization dedicated to spreading the word about oral systemic health. Please visit and continue to encourage your healthcare providers and friends to get on board. Please stop and think. Would you kiss this mouth? Would you let him kiss your baby or grandchild? Should anyone be kissing your mouth?

What is an aeration, and what can I expect?

By Troy Reissmann Wisconsin, we usually have a very hard, clay soil. When it gets hot (and trust me, it will), the clay soil gets extremely hard and tends to crack. Have you walked on your lawn and noticed it is rather bumpy and uneven? This can be the result of a hard compaction of the soil. Remember, grass grows from the soil. If your soil is hard and cracked, how do you expect grass to grow? Imagine your soil is a rock. How easy would it be to push a blade of grass through that rock? This is why we aerate lawns! There are four necessary elements to growing a thick, healthy green lawn: 1. Oxygen in the soil 2. Water in the soil 3. Organic fertilizer 4. Soil amendments The core aeration is an essential tool for the first two on the list. When you pull cores from the turf, it brings both oxygen and water to the grass roots, allowing them to grow. A blade of grass

An aeration is the single healthiest thing you can do for your lawn, hands down.
is about 90 percent water and if healthy, will reproduce about five times on its own. The aeration has other benefits as well. It helps even out the lawn, because it reduces the compaction. This replaces rolling a lawn, which next to using a chemical based lawn program, is the worst thing you can do to your lawn! It also helps remove thatch build up, which is another terrible thing to do to your lawn. Remember when I said a blade of grass is almost all water? What do you think will win in a fight, that fragile grass blade, or a heavy roller or metal thatching tine? It also is a big part of getting the grass roots to grow deeper, the key element to a healthy lawn. You may want to over-seed the lawn afterwards with a high grade grass seed. This is an excellent idea, but cannot be done if you plan on using that dangerous chemical lawn care company or 4-step program from the hardware store, as the chemicals and synthetics used will kill the new seed. If only there was an organic option. Maybe a company that can actually take care of all the above things I mentioned at a good price. (hint, look for our ad and coupon) An aeration is the single healthiest thing you can do for your lawn, hands down. Give us a call if you have any questions, we will be glad to help!

Try hypnotherapy for weight management

By Diane Beatty The concept in its entirety is about changing our mindset, developing a new relationship with food and forming new lifetime habits. Hypnotherapy introduces a new way of thinking; not only about food and your relationship to it, but about yourself, too. By addressing our emotional health and eating habits and forming new habits at the subconscious level, we are able to make permanent change. Therefore, we not only are better able to reduce the weight and the inches, we are then able to keep it off and maintain our ideal body size, weight and shape. The idea of being able to stay on a particular diet or regiment routine is the very thing that so often causes us to fail. When on a particular program and eating particular, pre-packaged, dehydrated or frozen foods, or a program that dictates what to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack, what happens when we go back to our normal routines, daily lives and regular food? We gain it all back. Its no wonder we fail time and time again. Thats simply because as human beings, we just cant do it over a long period of time. Willpower is a wonderful thing but willpower alone often fails us. With hypnotherapy, there is no diet required and no foods are off limits. There is no regiment routine involved. With hypnotherapy for weight management, you will never feel deprived or hungry. Its simple, effective and renders real results. If youre already involved with some other program that you just dont want to give up, the use of hypnotherapy can be combined with any healthy diet and exercise routine that youve chosen. Hypnotherapy will not interfere with anything you may already be doing. It will simply accelerate and enhance your results, adding the benefit of permanent mindset change. New habits will be formed and planted firmly on the sub-conscious level of your mind. Whenever we have a conscious goal, its imperative that the sub-conscious part of our mind is on board and agrees to work with us to that end. Otherwise, embedded unconscious beliefs, feelings and attitudes that we may not even be aware of keep us from attaining our goals. No matter how important they are to us and how much we try to accomplish them through willpower alone, we will invariably slide back. Hypnotherapy is an easy, effective way to attain permanent weight management. It allows you to naturally and automatically apply new healthy habits that support your ideal body weight and size.
Diane Beatty is a board-certified clinical hypnotherapist and neurolinguistic practitioner. She received her formal training and practicum at the Hypnotherapy Academy of America in Santa Fe, N.M. She received her board certification from the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners. Diane owns the Hypnotherapy Center of Wisconsin, LLC, in Appleton. Consider the dangers of BPA

By J.C. Paustian The dangerous chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA) continues to make headlines (at least within the circles of the green and health communities) these past few years and in recent months with discoveries that BPA is present in 95 percent of U.S. $1 bills and on many thermal-printed cash receipts. BPA has gotten the most publicity when its been used in the same sentence as baby bottles and baby formula. Unfortunately, the problem goes way beyond just baby products. Lets start at the beginning: BPA is a chemical that is used in hard plastics and epoxy resins. It was first used in the 1930s as a synthetic estrogen. These days, it helps make plastics strong while staying lightweight, and coats metal food containers in order to preserve the food inside. BPA is one of the highestvolume chemicals produced in the world, according to the Web site www.saferstates. com. Approximately six pounds of BPA are produced for every American per year, Safer States says. BPA is a hormone-disrupting chemical, which means that it can mimic

BPA is present in 95 percent of U.s. $1 bills.

or block hormones and disrupt the bodys normal functions. It can have health effects at extremely low exposure levels, and has been linked to cancer. BPA is especially of concern for vulnerable populations: pregnant women, babies and children. The primary source of exposure to BPA for most people is through diet. Other sources of exposure may include air, dust and water. However, ingestion of food and beverages account for the majority of exposure. BPA can leach into food from your metal fruit cans (think syrup-laden pears or peaches), which have an internal epoxy resin lining. And, yes, Im sorry to say that a study has found BPA in the lining of the metal lids used to secure the glass jars that we use for home canning and in baby food jars as well. Other consumer products made with this questionable polycarbonate material include tableware, food storage containers and water bottles. According to the National Toxicology Program, the degree to which BPA leaches from polycarbonate bottles into a liquid may depend more on the temperature of the liquid or bottle, than the age of the container. The good news is that in June 2010, Wisconsin became only the third state in the country to ban BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups under the BPA-Free Kids Act. Other U.S. states and even cities have followed suit with similar bans; and

Natures Pathways | July 2011

the European Union and Canada have complete bans on the manufacture and sale of all BPA products. A nationwide ban has yet to be implemented because of the strong lobbying efforts by the chemical industry (Wow, Im shocked). Now, lets get back to the money and receipt issue: Last December, a report was released by the Washington Toxics Coalition called On the Money: BPA on Dollar Bills and Receipts. Researchers found that half of the thermal paper receipts tested had large quantities of unbound BPA; 95 percent of the dollar bills tested positive for lower amounts. Unlike BPA in baby bottles and other products, BPA on thermal paper isnt chemically bound in any way: its a powdery film on the surface of receipts. Data from this report indicate that this highly toxic chemical does not, in fact, stay on the paper, but rather easily transfers to our skin and likely to other items that it rubs against. Our findings demonstrate that BPA cannot be avoided, even by the most conscious consumer, said

the alcohol-based ingredients in hand sanitizers actually help absorb more BPA into your skin.

Erika Schreder, staff scientist at the Washington Toxics Coalition and lead author of the report. This unregulated use of large amounts of BPA is having unintended consequences, including exposure to people when we touch receipts. Yikes. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) did its own investigation and found similar results: This paper is found not only in cash register receipts but also packing slips and parking tickets. By swabbing samples with wet wipes, EWG found that a large amount of BPA can transfer to your hands. From here it may get absorbed by your skin, as reported by a Swiss study, or you may transfer it to your mouth while eating. And those hand sanitizers? Ill just squirt a dab on my hands after handling cash receipts and dollar bills. Forget it. The alcohol-based ingredients in those actually help absorb more BPA into your skin. Double yikes. However, more good news: Our very own Appleton (formerly Appleton Papers) produces BPA-free thermal receipt paper. And, Gre env i l le-b as e d Prime Media sells it.

So with all this wonderful news to share, what can we do to protect ourselves from BPA? Avoid buying plastic bottles whenever possible, no matter what type of plastic theyre made from. If you must buy plastic bottles baby or otherwise make sure the labeling clearly states BPA-Free. Do not heat any type of plastic in the microwave, no matter what type of plastic theyre made from. Store food in glass or ceramic is best. But also look for BPA-free plastic storage containers if you must use plastic. Do not buy canned fruit! There is currently no ban on the BPA-lined epoxy that houses these fruits. Take advantage of fresh fruits at our local farmers markets. If youre preserving your own fruits and vegetables, keep your glass jars upright and allow a bit of space between the fruit and the lid to limit exposure of the two. recognize that you need time to consider many factors when deciding which contractor to hire. When looking for a reliable contractor, consumers should employ a contractor with an established business in their area. Ask for references and check them out. Look into the contractors standard of work and his professional affiliations; verify his insurance; and check to see if he needs to be licensed. Check with the BBB for a report on the contractor. Do not permit work to start without a signed written contract that includes all verbal promises that were made by the contractor. Be sure that the written contract includes a start and completion date, a breakdown of the cost and information about the contractor, including license number, street address and phone number. If you are asked to pay for the entire job up-front, this should raise a red flag. Arrange for payments to be made as parts of the job are completed. Final payment should not be due until the job is done and you have gone over all of the details with the contractor. And, homeowners should pay by check or credit card, never cash. If someone solicits you by phone to do home improvement work or simply shows up at your door pointing out things you need done, do not give them any personal or financial information. Try to get some printed material from the solicitors that includes their name, address and phone number. Then do your research prior to doing business with them.

Paving the way

All Around Roofing all about protecting the environment
By Jennifer Walla

Asphalt shingles have been the main roofing option for many years due to ease of application, low cost, excellent performance and attractiveness. These types of shingles constitute nearly two-thirds of the roofing market for both new homes and roof replacements, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Unfortunately, they do have their drawbacks, says Josh Ostrowski, a roofing professional for more than 15 years, and owner of All Around Roofing & Siding, LLC. Despite a lifespan of approximately 25 years, asphalt shingles need to be replaced occasionally. Unfortunately, annual roof installation generates an estimated 7 to 10 million tons of shingle tear-off waste and installation scrap. The alarming thing about that is that it takes more than 200 years for a shingle to disintegrate in the earth. As a roofer (and a major contributor to area landfills), Ostrowski thought there had to be a better way. Then, about a year ago, he learned that instead of being part of the problem he could be a part of the solution: by recycling the shingles he acquired from his various roofing jobs. According to the EPA, asphalt roofing shingles have great recycling potential: theyre plentiful in the construction and demolition (C&D) waste stream; theyre generated separately from other wastes and, hence, are easy to isolate. Also, recycling technology is available and the use of recycled shingles in pavement can yield cost savings. The recycling process is fairly simple, Ostrowski says. First, they remove non-shingle wastes that interfere with processing or end uses. Then the shingles are ground to - 2, depending on the intended end use, and put into paving materials. Its neat to be a part of something like this and Im glad its starting to become more popular in the trade, he says. If we keep filling our landfills its not going to be one contractor or one person thats going to really affect it. Its going to have to be a community-wide effort to make a difference so I hope more contractors get on board with this movement. In addition to repair and installation of new and custom roofing services, All Around offers siding

Its going to have to be a community-wide effort to make a difference so I hope more contractors get on board with this movement.

services including repairs, removal, paint or a complete overhaul. We are proficient in lap, shingle and vertical siding and work with vinyl, steel, aluminum and wood, Ostrowski says. We provide a 15- to 30-year guarantee and an installation warranty. Volatile spring and early summer weather unleashed considerable damage to many area homes and businesses, he says. Hail, large amounts of water and high winds can cause several different kinds of problems to roofs and exterior walls. A small blister in your shingle may not seem like a big deal, but over time it gets progressively worse. When a shingle is damaged and isnt fixed as soon as possible, it causes the life of your roof to decrease significantly, he explains. The damaged shingles will start to degrade, which loosens them and causes them to fall apart. During high winds these loose shingles can become even looser and maybe even fall off. The longer you wait to repair exterior damage to your home, the more extensive the damage can become.

By Lani Herner ost of you who know me know that I have two beautiful Cockapoos. One is a handsome black male named Maxmillion, and the other is a gorgeous chocolate-brown female named Coco Bean. These two dogs are part of the family, so I take great care in making sure that my two beautiful babies are given the best care possible. I know most of you feel the same exact way about your pets that I do. We are so wrapped up in feeding our dogs and cats right, but do we ever think of how outdoor plants and materials used to treat our lawns, and mulch that we use to enhance our outdoor plants, can affect our animals in a negative way? Most likely it is not even given a second thought. For instance, did you know coco mulch (that you can get at any major chain), has chocolate listed as one of the main ingredients? Why would any company do this knowing that we walk our dogs in the summer, and sometimes we cant always keep a sharp eye on them? Its very possible an animal will end up eating the mulch because it smells sweet. In turn, they suffer a great deal and will cost the owner major vet bills and heartache. There are many plants that we grow in the summer that can adversely affect our canine friends. Listed first in the chart to the right is the common name, then the botanical name and then the poisonous part of the plant. We also cannot ignore the fact that trees and vines can run the danger of poisoning our animals. I have compiled the following list of trees and vines for your reference. Apple (stem and leaves): shock, mouth inflammation, rapid increase in breathing
Natures Pathways | July 2011

Yew (American, English, western), Apricot, Almond, Peach, wild Cherry, Japanese Plum, Balsam Pear: diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain Ficus (Cuban Laurel): stomach upset Cherry: rapid breathing, shock, mouth inflammation, heart rate increase Ficus Lyrata (Fiddle-Leaf): stomach upset, irritated skin Philodendron (Devils ivy): upset stomach, convulsions, asphyxiation, death English ivy: stomach upset, hyperactivity, laboured breath, drooling, fever, thirst increase, pupil dilation, staggering Jasmine: convulsions, death Vine: pupil dilation, upset stomach, drooling, heart failure oak, Matrimony Vine, Virginia Creeper: varied effects When I researched these items, I couldnt believe how many normal, everyday plants, vines and trees pose a significant risk of danger and in some cases even death. When I planted this summer, I made sure that environmentally-friendly and safe materials were used that wouldnt harm me and my family, but I also kept my pets in my planting plans as well. Have a healthy and safe summer.

while the literal definitions of a tangible home are brief and indisputable, the intangible qualities of home are limitless.
provides ever-present signs paying tribute to those who have gone before us, establishing and maintaining our land of the free and the home of the brave. Coincidentally (and by natural design), July is the month when it behooves us to evaluate our individual concept of home. To catch a glimpse of a key player in this concept, all we need do on a cloudless night is look up and there she is: the moon. Just as the moon influences the rise and fall of the tides and given that we humans are comprised of 70 percent water (as is Earths surface), the effects of the moons gravitational pull also influence the tone of our personal energetic ebbs-and-flows. Each full cycle of the moon brings with it subtle yet distinctly different energetic frequencies. The frequencies in full swing during July resonate closely with our internal energy frequencies relative to home. We dont need to ascribe to this theory for it to be effective any more than we need to embrace the theory of gravity lest we float off into space; some things in life simply are. However, what is universally agreed upon is the impact our home-life has on our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health and well-being. While the literal definitions of a tangible home are brief and indisputable, the intangible qualities of home are limitless. These are the aspects of home we never outgrow. These are personal. And while we have personal inalienable rights, those rights come along hand-in-hand with responsibility, personal responsibility, which begins at home. Home may be where our heart is or it may be just a place to hang our hat. Defining home with conviction or indifference will set the tone for the ripple effect we inevitably create when we head out the door. This is not a hell-fire and brimstone edict threatening us to be good or else. It is simply the energetic laws of cause and effect in action. Paying heed to the need of a strong home-base and then following through to make it so allows us to be at the top of our game more often than not. Again, home is what we all rise up from and fall back on day in and day out. Though July is the month whereby universal energies align heart and home with more awareness, theres no time like the present, regardless of what month it is, for fine-tuning ones homebase. When our ripples are happy and content, thats the result of a job well done.

Breathe your way to better health

By Gil Haight and Cheryl Conard Haight Deep, effortless breathing is essential to good health. Among other things, it calms the nervous system and decreases pain. Breathing well means breathing efficiently. We do this by taking in oxygen with minimal effort. With many activities, such as exercise, we dont typically want to reduce effort, but with breathing, reducing effort is essential. Our lungs are encased in a container known as the thoracic cavity. A suction mechanism allows for the expansion of lung tissue as the containers size increases. The lungs have no capacity to contract or expand on their own, so if we want to improve breathing efficiency, we need to increase the size of the thoracic cavity. How do we do this the most efficiently, with the least amount of effort? During inhalation the thoracic cavity is capable of expanding in all directions: top to bottom, side to side, front to back. These movements, the breastbone rising and falling and the ribs separating in front and along the sides, are most easily felt lying on ones back. It is in this position with practice that we can most easily learn to produce increased movement in the rib cage and thus breathe more deeply. The bottom of the thoracic cavity is where most movement is possible and typically where most problems occur due to shallow breathing. (Think pneumonia, which almost always occurs in the lower lobes.) This region is occupied by the structure known as the diaphragm. At rest the diaphragm is configured like an upsidedown bowl but becomes more like a saucer during inhalation. The lower lungs are sucked downward by the contracting diaphragm and rapidly expand into this newly created space. The space below the diaphragm, the abdominal cavity, is occupied

Andrew Weil, MD, worldrenowned author and integrative medicine pioneer. by many internal organs. This cavity must also somehow change in size to make room for the expansion of the lungs. This most easily occurs as the abdominal muscles relax and literally bulge outward. Clearly, it is not possible for the diaphragm to function efficiently if the stomach muscles are sucked in in an attempt to look fit. Watch how babies and toddlers breathe. They are experts at breathing easily and efficiently. Their abdomens dramatically and effortlessly bulge outward during inhalation, a perfect example of the kind of breathing that is both calming and pain-relieving. The best way to relearn this is by lying on your back with a hand on your belly. Inhale slowly and without force, allowing your belly to expand out. Exhale even more slowly. Stay with it. Habits dont change overnight but the benefits of diaphragmatic breathing are definitely worthwhile, even life-changing.

New studies around cell phones, bees and autism

By Christine Riemer After just 50 minutes on a cell phone, the emitted radiation increases the activity in your brain cells, a new study published in JAMA revealed. CNN reports, Brain activity means that the cells are using glucose to create energy...Compared with subjects whose phones were turned off, the group whose phones were on had significantly higher brain activity in the area closest to the telephone antenna. Dr. Michael Kundi, at the Medical University of Austria, commented: Since a brain tumor utilizes excessive amounts of glucose, changes in glucose utilization may be a key mechanism to support tumor growth. Two other new studies reveal electromagnetic radiation from

cell phones may affect bones and the salivary gland: Men who wear their cell phone on the right side of their belts were found to have reduced bone mineral content and density in the right hip. And a recent study by Duan Y, et al, found a relationship between cell phone use and parotid gland tumors, and as much as a 3,000 percent increased risk of parotid gland tumors with greater than 2.5 hours of cell phone use per day. Advice from The Doctors

The Doctors, the Emmy-winning daytime TV show, collaborated with USA Weekend in March 2011 to publish Can Cell Phones Cause Brain Cancer? Although a 10-year survey of more than 12,000 people from 13 countries suggested a possible increased risk for glioma a type of brain tumor in heavy cell phone users, investigators concluded there needs to be more long-term research. It often takes years or even decades between a carcinogen and onset of a tumor. However, The Doctors report long-term studies are ongoing: one launched in Europe last year plans to track more than 250,000 cell phone users over 20 to 30 years. ABC News reported a study on May 13, 2011, that may help explain recent reports of dying bees known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Swiss biologist Daniel Favre tested the relationship between honeybees and cell phones: He placed (cell) phones inside bee hives and then monitored the bees reaction. He found that in the presence of actively communicating cell phones... bees produced sounds known as worker piping, which tends to indicate disturbance in a bee colony. Over the past few years national studies have found that beekeepers in the U.S. are losing 30 percent of their bee colonies over the winter, which is about double what they consider to be normal.

Autism: 1 in 38

Another bee study

In May 2011, MSNBC reported South Korean Study Finds 1 in 38 Children has Autism Traits. The previous U.S. estimate was 1 in 100. By casting a wider net and looking closely at mainstream children, the researchers expected to find a higher rate of autism characteristics. But they were surprised how high the rate was. Robert Kane, Ph.D., makes a possible association between electromagnetic radiation and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD): It is also readily acknowledged that human exposures to radio frequency radiation have become pervasive during the last 20 years, whereas such exposures were uncommon prior to that time. It is suggested that fetal or neonatal exposures to radio frequency radiation may be associated with an increased incidence of autism. ( Need for more research comes at the expense of critical time time in which people and other living creatures could be moved out of harms way...the bioinitiative report has clearly demonstrated (that) there is enough science out there. In short this madness fueled by the revenue motivations of industry and government and the convenience of consumers, must be addressed as a priority before it ends in an unmitigated public health disaster. (

Finally ... politics

Summer fun without the summer bummers

By Dr. James M. Benzschawel unshine, blue skies and tans during the summer can be very motivating for anyone to get off the couch and outside enjoying athletic activities like softball, rollerblading, etc. Here enters the weekend warrior and the injuries that come along with it. A weekend warrior is

a term for someone who does high physical activity following their 40-plus hours a week sedentary job. It can hit men and women, but most commonly affects former active people over the age of 30 whose work and family obligations prevent weekday exercise. Getting activity in on the weekends may seem like the right thing to do,

but this may actually be hurting the bodies and making them more prone to chronic conditions and injuries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 10,000 Americans visit the emergency room each day for sports and exercise-related injuries. The most common types of injuries seen are: shoulder strains, tennis elbow, pulled hamstrings, quadriceps strains, sprained ankles, shin splints, jumpers knee, iliotibial band pain and Achilles tendonitis. As we get older, heavier and more collagen-deficient, our bodies become less resilient to the weekend physical activities. This doesnt include just the baby boomers. Even those in their late 20s, 30s and 40s are more susceptible. Those few pounds added since high school can put extra stress on the joints and ligaments. The good news is all of these injuries can be reduced or eliminated by proper conditioning. First, dont make the most common mistake of trying to do too much too fast. Try to break up your sessions into smaller, more frequent increments. Gradually increase the amount that youre working out and the intensity level on a week-to-week basis. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recommends doing so in increments, just 10 percent each week. So if you normally walk three miles each day, for example, build up to four miles over three weeks to a month. Another common mistake is to stretch before a workout. Research actually shows this doesnt prevent injury. The proper way is to do a low intensity five to 10 minute warm-up followed by proper stretching. This gets the muscles and ligaments more elastic and the body adapted for the

workout. Remember practice doesnt make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. Following a proper workout plan will not only let you enjoy working out, but also prevent injury. The risk of not exercising is 20 times greater than the risk of exercising. Ideally exercise should be performed 30 minutes per day, but something is always better than nothing. Before starting any exercise routine, no matter what your level, get checked by your doctor beforehand. Use proper technique when youre working out. To learn more, talk with a trainer and/ or doctor who specializes in sports activities. Enjoy the summer and all the activities that come with it.

you were invited to meet with an Academy Award-winning screenwriter whose most famous movie, Dances with Wolves, is considered by the American Film Institute as a Top 100 Film of All-Time (#75) as well as being on numerous Top 10 All-Time Westerns lists. Youd think that if Michael Blake (hes also a Golden Globe and Eleanor Roosevelt award winner) invited you down to his ranch just outside of Tucson, Ariz., to talk about his follow-up western, Slade, that you would be fit and trim. Youd think that if you are playing the lead in said movie that you would be in top-notch physical condition. Youd think that if he originally sold the screenplay for $500,000 that you would have your six pack abs at the ready. Youd think that if it was up to Michael to find a production company and a lead you would be muscular as heck ... especially knowing that at one time or another Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe and Viggo Mortenson were attached to star in it. Youd think that as the next star attached to it that you would be in diamond-hard condition. Youd think...right? Well the good news is I am the next Slade. The bad news is I met him with a beer belly. Jody Marriott, one of our films producers, and I met with him at his horse ranch the weekend of April 28-May 1. We showed up fashionably late and were received warmly by Michael. As we both marveled at his beautiful home I noticed that his hardware (aka awards) were in plain view. There is nothing in the world like talking about an upcoming movie project while an Oscar and a Golden Globe statuette are lovingly staring at you ... beckoning for love, kisses and rated PG-13 hugs. Whoa, I went a little far there. But I digress... As we talked, our conversation naturally segued into Slade. This western is loosely based on Joseph Slade, a true western antihero, who fought with his hands and with his gun protecting the downtrodden and innocent. As I talked to him about how

excited I was to play Slade I showed him some of my western-style fighting moves, incorporating native martial art techniques and modern day boxing. Moves that I thought would fit the character and the movie. As I am moving about with lightning speed, instead of noticing my quickness and grace, Michael is staring at my Wisconsin-infused beer belly. After my flourish he compliments me on the martial arts techniques and then, as he is staring at my Buddha belly, he pauses and says, Well it looks like Slade is going to be a lot bigger than I imagined hed be. Sometimes you wont be at your best for some of lifes biggest events, reunions, gatherings or meetings with Hollywood legends. But dont let that get you down or knock you off your horse. Set goals for yourself, not for anyone else. Only when it comes from within can you be trim. And no matter what happens, get back on that horse again. I know I will, but this time Ill be 25 pounds lighter.

The relationship between food dyes and difficult kids

Those blue drinks, red popsicles and multi-colored cereals could be triggering temper tantrums, learning difficulties, sleep disorders and a host of physical complaints such as asthma, headaches, hives and ear infections. This year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration took the first steps in determining if these petroleum-based additives are playing a part in the increase in ADHD and other behavior and learning problems. The agency acknowledged that some children are sensitive to these chemicals, and they have changed their Web site to reflect this.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians now list food additives as potential triggers for conditions like ADHD. This all comes as good news for the Feingold Association of the U.S., the nonprofit support group that shows parents how to address a wide range of problems by continuing to enjoy their favorite foods, but in versions that are free of the worst of the additives. More information is available at www. The research showing that food dyes are harmful to all children prompted the European Union to require warning labels on most foods that contain the dyes. As a result, multinational food companies are now coloring the food in Europe with natural ingredients like grape juice, strawberries and turmeric. In the U.S., however, these same companies continue to use the cheaper petroleum-based dyes. Richard Carlton, M.D., a New York

psychiatrist who specializes in helping children with behavior and learning problems, agrees that it makes sense to replace the chemically-treated foods with their natural counterparts before resorting to stimulant drugs, with all their potential side effects. He also urges strongly that the pre-natal vitamins women take should be free of artificial colors (which can damage fetal development). Many years ago, Ben Feingold, M.D., discovered that some of the additives found in food can trigger disturbed behavior in sensitive children, and that as more and more of these additives are being used, the number of affected children increases. During the past 50 years the amount of dye consumed in the United States has increased by 500 percent. Now, after numerous supportive medical studies and 35 years of success, the Feingold Association is seeing a growing awareness that eating chemicals made from petroleum is harmful for everyone.

Try natural bug repellants

By Caitlyn Brotz It looks like summer is here. Its time to pull out the grill, unpack the camping gear and prep the mountain bikes. Summer is full of fun and the beautiful outdoors. Most of what comes with summer, like blooming flowers, the warm weather and outdoor activities, are great. But not everything that comes with summer is so wonderful. Take, for example, those pesky mosquitoes. Whether I am enjoying a run outside or simply hanging out in a friends backyard, I cant help but attract every mosquito in a 1-mile radius. I have tried to avoid using insect repellent because of all the harmful chemicals in it. Instead, I have tried some clothing and lifestyle adjustments in order to avoid using the harmful insect repellents. I have tried everything from wearing long pants, to avoiding wearing black, to

trying to stay indoors between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are at their worst. After all those precautions have failed, I end up with sweaty clothes, missing out on the beautiful summer nights, and still covered in bug bites. If you are a mosquito magnet, like me, you are looking for a

natural mosquito repellent that actually repels. Not only are those pesky mosquito bites itchy and extremely irritating but there is also the risk of West Nile Virus that has sprung up recently all over the country. However, West Nile Virus isnt the only danger that poses a threat to our summer enjoyment. The pesticide that is in the repellent that is our sanctuary on those muggy summer days is even more harmful to us. Many insect repellants are loaded with chemicals. One of the most used chemicals is the poisonous pesticide DEET. DEET is actually so poisonous that the Environmental Protection Agency says you should wash it off your skin when you are finished using its protection, avoid breathing it in and not spray it directly on your face. DEET has been associated with seizures and several cases of toxic encephalopathy (encephalitis) in children, including three deaths, according to the Extension Toxicology Network at Cornell University. The use of DEET in mosquito repellents is extremely troubling. But if we cant use DEET to repel those harmful and annoying mosquitoes, what can we use? Lets take a look at one of the newest ways to repel mosquitoes that are 10 times more powerful than the chemical repellents. One of the natural ways to repel mosquitoes is catnip oil. A study done at Iowa State University found that catnip oil was 10 times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than chemicals, such as DEET, found in most commercial bug repellents. Nepetalactone is an essential oil in catnip that gives the plant its odor and when studying the effect of nepetalactone on mosquitoes researchers found that the mosquitoes retreated. Most commercial repellents contain roughly 5 to 25 percent DEET while repellents containing catnip oil need much less oil and still achieve the same repellency as a DEET-based repellent. Why catnip repeals mosquitoes is still a mystery to even the scientist that made the discovery. It could be that the mosquitoes dont like the smell of catnip oil, or it could be an irritant to them but the fact still remains that catnip oil repels mosquitoes. Smell and texture are two other annoying side effects of traditional repellants. Most commercial repellents smell horrible and leave a sticky feeling on your skin that can be even more annoying than the pesky little bugs you are trying to fight off. With many natural repellents you dont get that chemical smell and you will usually have a less sticky residue left on your skin. Find a natural cosmetic company, which uses catnip oil as its main repellant. They will most likely have the aroma of lemongrass, tea tree and eucalyptus, along with other pleasant natural fragrances. It also doesnt leave that awful sticky residue on your skin; instead, you are left with velvety texture. There are other natural repellents and I urge you to find which repellent works best for you and your lifestyle. Be sure to read the labels. Now that you are aware of the harmful chemicals found in many commercial repellents, you can make an informed decision on what you want to use on yourself and your family to protect against the mosquitoes this summer. With the warm weather finally here to stay we all want to spend as much time in it as we can. So fire up those campfires and bring out those marshmallows and cover up with the natural bug spray of your choice. Enjoy your summer!

Natureinspired creativity
By Teresa Van Lanen ummer is finally here in all her glory. It is easy to go to our favorite places and get inspired by her beauty. Whether youre camping, boating, cycling, driving, hiking or beaching, you can open your eyes and ears to the surroundings of summer. There are great works of art in museums creatively inspired by nature. We, too, can be masters of nature art in our own way. To do this, follow these three steps: shed your judgment on your art; become inspired by nature; and enjoy fun, creative ideas spurred by nature. Step one is dealing with self-judgment, specifically around your art (whatever form that takes). This is a big topic and not one we can fully discuss in detail. I have used the following tips to help myself and others deal with some of this self-criticism. Try as many of these as youd like. Acknowledge that we are all different and there are many different kinds of art to appeal to all these tastes. You can confirm this idea by going to an exhibit, or listening to various radio LLC music stations. Notice how some things appeal more to you than others. This is the great thing about art and creativity with its individual appeal. It has a unique calling to each of us. Do short meditations before you get into the creative zone. This will assist you in tapping into your inner spirit that loves to play and create. Start small. See some of the temporary art ideas listed a bit later in this article. These are perfect starters to get into your creative spirit. Enjoy the process of creativity. Have a goal of having fun with the act of creating rather than worrying about the end product.

The next step is getting inspired. Sounds easy, right? Dont let your self-judgment psyche you out to get inspired. To get inspired tap into the creative juices inside you and let your environment speak to you. Nature-inspired topics are an easy fit for this but you can use manmade objects as well. Here is a tip to assist in getting inspired: Because we tend to be overly visual in our senses, try this: Sit quietly outside (no phone or music) and close your eyes for 60 seconds. Breathe deeply and expand your senses. Notice how the air feels, the temperature on your skin. What do you smell? Can you see the shadows of light behind your eyelids? Now listen to the sounds of man and nature co-mingling. Now open your eyes and confirm the sensations you experienced and jot your first impressions in a note book. Step three is to enjoy the fun and creative ideas. Here are some for you to do individually or in groups. Temporary art is impromptu, on-the-spot and not meant to last. It is to be enjoyed in the moment and a good way to develop the practice of the process of creating. At the beach: make sand sculptures or collages out of shells and stones.

In the woods: collect fallen sticks, moss, rocks and leaves to make an arrangement that pleases you. On the water: feel the wind and sun, hear the lapping and movement of the waves to inspire a poem: Ode to the fish that got away. Around home: make a still life of flowers, vegetables and fruit. Other project ideas to share or to use as a remembrance of nature inspiration: Press flowers, grasses and leaves to use in projects such as making cards or stationery. Photograph collages of favorite events and summer spots. You can have a special bulletin board that you use to exchange photos easily from week to week.

Write a short story about a favorite summer trip or adventure. Sidewalk chalk drawings; enjoy colorful geometric shapes or nature shapes of flowers, clouds, rainbows in a large area of the driveway. Make your own wind chime or mobile with items found in nature such as shells, stones, flowers or leaves. Compose a song of nature sounds intermingled with your own words.

How to change your genes and destiny

By Megan M. Kerkhoff, CHC, AADP Have you ever used the excuse it runs in the family? (And no, Im not talking about a goofy sense of humor or funny looking ears!) Many find it easy to simply accept the notion that if Mom has it, Grandpa has it, and Aunt Pat has it, theyre going to get it. Whether it is cancer, heart disease, diabetes or eczema, people often assume theres nothing that can be done to change it. Now, according to a new field of biology called epigenetics, we know that we have much more control over our health than ever imagined. It runs in the family is no longer an excuse! Epigenetics, coined in 1942, is the study of changes in gene activity that dont involve actual alterations to the genetic code but still get passed down to at least one generation. It is through epigenetic marks on the DNA that factors like diet, stress and prenatal nutrition make an imprint on genes and are passed on to future

generations. Essentially, our environment and diet have the power to turn genetic predispositions on or off like a light switch. In 1986, the first two groundbreaking papers on epigenetics were published in the journal Lancet. They found that if a pregnant woman ate a poor diet, her child would have a significantly higher risk of heart disease as an adult. Yet another paper published in 2006 in the European Journal of Human Genetics found that fathers who had started smoking before puberty had sons who had significantly higher body mass indexes than other boys by age 9. These boys end up being at high risk for obesity, premature death and other health issues far into adulthood. The research of Weston A. Price also demonstrates the

powerful impact diet has upon prenatal nutrition and genetics. He found that in the civilizations that ate what is to be considered an ideal diet, there was almost no infection, dental decay, or common American diseases. Not only this, but he also found that the children tended to be more beautiful, with fully formed jaws, perfect teeth, and there was never any need for braces. So what diseases run in your family? What are you going to now do to overcome them, if not for yourself, for your children and grandchildren? These genetic changes are not believed to be permanent, meaning once the environmental stressor is removed, the DNA imprints will gradually fade away and revert to the original DNA code. So the ball is now in your court. There are foods and lifestyles to help significantly reduce the risk of all the major killers: heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, obesity, etc. Find the guidance you need to change your health and tell your genes whos boss! What better reason to lead a healthy lifestyle than simply for the love of your children and the generations to come?

The healing power of sleep

By Meg Kubisch Stress is the number 1 cause of short-term sleep disorders. I know this from firsthand experience. A year and a half ago I found myself suffering from corporate burn-out. I decided to retire. Insomnia plagued me and had a detrimental effect on my entire well-being. I had tried so many of the recommended guidelines to help ensure better sleep regular bedtime, reducing electronic stimuli, etc. yet none gave me the nourishing and restorative sleep I longed for, the kind I remembered from my youth. Soon after retirement I stumbled upon a company that trained brains. A brain out of balance was causing my insomnia. Skeptical at first I was desperate for some relief. My brainwaves were balanced and harmonized over the course of a week and this non-invasive technology worked. My balanced brain created an environment

that allowed my bodily functions to perform optimally and I was able to resume a normal sleep schedule. I also began to enjoy all the additional benefits of a good nights sleep so I decided then and there to learn more about the relationship of the brain and sleep. A year and one half later I have discovered a lot about sleep disorders. For many of us who lead very busy lives, sleep had become an optional activity. Some of us take on the role of rescuer or fixer for others in our lives and ignore meeting our own needs. This is at

our own expense and that expense comes in the form of unhealthy sleep patterns. Ironically this ultimately robs us of the ability to continue to really take care of those who need us. Sleep is essential for survival. The average life span of a rat is 2 to 3 years. The average life span of a sleep-deprived rat is 3 to 5 weeks. Sleep is not a luxury. It is a necessity for optimal functioning. While we sleep the brain goes to work: it catalogues the previous days experience it primes your memory it triggers the release of hormones regulating energy, mood and mental activity. To complete its work, the brain needs 6 to 8 hours of sleep. When it gets less, your concentration, mood regulation and productivity all take a hit. All 5 stages of sleep are essential, especially REM stage (rapid eye movement). A lack of REM results in slower cognitive and social processing, memory issues and difficulty concentrating. Not only does this make it difficult to survive your day but nearly impossible to thrive and grow. You owe it to yourself and those who rely on you to meet your needs responsibly. A good nights sleep is a necessary step to a state of wellbeing and optimal performance for you. A balanced brain helps get you there.

The surprising other uses for St. Johns wort

By Rebecca Aldag y the time this article goes to print, St. Johns wort, otherwise known as Hypericum perforatum, will be in full bloom along country roadsides, neglected fields, and meadows all across Wisconsin. This ray of sunshine is easily identifiable by its orange-yellow petals that display black dots along the margins, and gray green leaves. Go ahead and crush a petal; you will find a blood-red liquid is released onto your fingers. This blood-red color was historically viewed as a sign of a medicinal use for the plant. The theory behind what is called The Doctrine of Signatures says that we can determine the use for a plant by

its resemblance to a specific body part or organ. A great example of this is the likeness of the Ginkgo biloba leaf to the brain! Ginkgo is well known for its memorysupportive qualities. John Gerard, a 17th century English herbalist, talks about St. Johns wort in his writings (Gerard, 1630). Gerard says the crushed leaves should be place upon burns and open wounds. He writes that the leaves, flowers and seeds could be crushed, placed in a glass with olive oil and left in the hot sun for weeks. The oil would turn the color of blood (a doctrine of signature). He further describes St. Johns wort as a precious remedy for deep wounds, those that have gone through the body such as from

weapons. He formulated his oil with white wine, olive oil, turpentine, leaves, flowers and gently crushed seeds. He promoted this as the best compound in the world to heal wounds. Roman armies were also known to use St. Johns wort as a remedy for wounded soldiers on the battlefield. Oliver Brown, an early American settler and healer, also noted its wound healing properties (O.P. Brown, 1865) and used an ointment made of the plant in trauma, swellings, bruises and wounds. Scudders Eclectic Journal, which contains writings and presentations from turn of the century physicians, noted it as the best remedy for acute and chronic neuritis with a tingling 79 pain, and as the only reliable remedy

in nerve pain of the spinal column, and as a primary remedy for excessive pain in general (Turner & Lebanon, 1924 & 1925). Clinical trials to date have looked at St. Johns wort as a potential aid in smoking cessation, due to its purported effects on neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. Neurotransmitters of the brain play a role in addictive behavior. Studies that used St. Johns wort, along with behavorial modification techniques, have demonstrated the best success in smoking cessation. Numerous studies have now shown St. Johns wort to be effective in cases of mild to moderate depression, and well tolerated by study participants. The herb is routinely used in Europe in this respect. More information on the use of St. Johns wort for depression can be obtained through the U.S. National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health at, and the American Botanical Council at A word of caution on St. Johns wort, herb-drug interactions and contraindications. St. Johns wort has been shown to act as an inducer of cytochrome P450 activity. Many pharmaceutical drugs are substrates of P450 and will interact with St. Johns wort, potentially leading to decreased metabolization of the drug. Talk to your doctor first if you take a prescription drug and are considering St. Johns wort. Although rare, there have been known cases of photo-toxicity documented with the use of St. Johns wort. As a precaution, avoid excessive sun exposure or exposure to UVA light while taking St. Johns wort. As with all herbs, discontinue use at least three days prior to surgery.

Consider the healing power of kindness

By Shelley Riutta Someone close to me recently had to have some tests for his heart. Thankfully, his heart is healthy and strong (not surprising for someone as loving as he). While he was going through the testing procedure we were quite moved by the kindness of the medical staff. Everywhere we turned there were expressions of kindness. Even his roommate for his overnight stay was a sweetie. It was another reminder to me of the healing power of kindness. Moments of expressing kindness take such little effort yet have such a powerful ripple effect on others.

Do you feel stuck personally or professionally?

Here are some tips to bring the energy of kindness more into your life: 1. Start with being kind to yourself. Ask yourself moment by moment, If I were to be kind to myself right now, what would I do? Would you take a break and walk in the sunshine? Would you say something kind to yourself like, I love you and want the best for you? 2. Pick one person every day you are going to express extra kindness to. It could be a stranger or someone you love. Go out of your way to be kind and see how good it feels. 3. See other peoples unkind behavior as pain they are experiencing. Unhappy people in pain are unkind to others. If you can see it this way it can help you move into compassion rather than judgment. 4. It can be kind to let some words be left unsaid. Watch what you say to those that are close to you. People can unwittingly put other people down in a very subtle way. Watch what you say closely and if you are about to do something like that, just breathe and say to yourself, That doesnt need to be said. For example, if someone is doing

wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness.

something different than you would, perhaps a household chore, instead of making a negative comment say to yourself, That is interesting they do that differently than I would. Appreciate differences in other people around you rather than judging them. 5. Notice the energy of kindness has a softness to it. It is an energy that is soft and open. Judgment, on the other hand, has an energy of hardness to it. Notice throughout the day if your energy is staying open and kind or closing off and feeling hard. This will help you monitor the energy within you and shift it to being more open so you can move into that kindness with yourself and others. You will find that your kindness brings out the best in everyone you meet. The more you practice kindness with yourself and others you will see the world transforming before your eyes. And a kind world is a beautiful world!

Sweating and aluminum-free antiperspirant

By Guy Kitchell Axillary hyperhidrosis, or excessive underarm sweating, is a medical condition in which the glands produce far more sweat than is needed for bodily temperature control. Its thought to be caused by an overactive sympathetic nervous system, which in turn, over-stimulates the sweat glands. People suffering from hyperhidrosis often sweat profusely even when the air temperature is cool or with little or no physical exertion. Excessive sweating can happen frequently and unpredictably, and is not associated with the normal triggers for ordinary perspiration. Hyperhidrosis patients often report extreme discomfort, odor and embarrassment, and sometimes, this makes it difficult to interact with people outside of the home. It can also disrupt regular sleep patterns, which carries with it any number of debilitating physical and emotional consequences. Until this year, if your body produced too much wetness or odor, you had to rely on daily antiperspirants loaded with aluminum to stop the sweating. Aluminum does work well in stopping wetness and odor, but

People suffering from hyperhidrosis often sweat profusely even when the air temperature is cool or with little or no physical exertion.

many people are wary of using aluminum on their skin especially daily. With many rumors surrounding high aluminum use and the link to Alzheimers, breast cancer and other ailments, its no surprise many people tried to use a natural deodorant like a crystal stone or a product like Toms of Maine. Unfortunately, all of these natural deodorant products do nothing to stop wetness, and are only mildly successful at stopping odor. But, there is great news! Stores have just begun to sell aluminum-free antiperspirant. There have been many aluminum-free deodorants, but none that also addressed the wetness issue of hyperhidrosis. If wetness and odor are an issue, and you are trying to keep aluminum out of your underarm products, these new products are perfect for you. Most are made with natural and safe ingredients like essential oils, peptides and allantoin, rather than aluminum, to shrink your underarm pores to a size that liquid sweat cannot pass through, while still allowing your body to continue its natural toxin release with no side effects. Peptides are considered safe to use on your skin. In fact, many people use it around the eyes to hydrate the skin and remove fine lines and wrinkles.

Good vibrations
Our emotional wellbeing
By Bob Reber Im picking up good vibrations Most of us are familiar with this Beach Boys hit and some of us even like to turn it up when the sun is high and we are poolside in the summer heat. After all, the music and the lyrics cant help but bring out the good emotions we all enjoy feeling. But what do we do when those vibrations arent so good? Emotions are the essential energy within us. They are the EnergyMotions that are crucial not only to our overall health and wellbeing; they are the energy with which we manifest our lives. Yet too often we find ourselves not wanting to experience the not so good vibrations of our emotions. You know which ones they are. They are the anger that suddenly erupts when were cut off in holiday traffic. Its the melancholy sorrow that comes when we have to leave old friends at the end of the visit. There is sadness, contempt, disapproval and oh so many more. Yet, behind these and any emotion is a wealth of information about who you truly are that is being mirrored back to you by the events that are occurring and how you are perceiving them. Before we have the experience of any emotion, there is first a thought that occurs. This thought happens so quickly that most people are seldom able to see it as it happens or even catch up to it after it has happened. Instead they get swept away by the emotional wake the thought has caused. I once had a boss that was very good at creating these emotional waves within me. Every time I spoke with him he was quick to point out the one area that was lacking and not recognizing all of the other areas in which I was excelling. Evidently, he came from the belief that anger is a motivator and the more
Natures Pathways | July 2011

he angered his subordinates the more he would get out of them. He would be correct that anger motivates, however, my anger was created and motivated by my thoughts stemming from my fears and beliefs. Those fears and beliefs were easy to identify when I started seeing the thoughts that preceded the emotions. One of those was the thought that I was a failure as a person because I hadnt stepped up in one area of my job. Upon seeing this I could laugh at the thought, but the fear and belief underlying it was a bit overwhelming. There was the fear of being without an income or employment, the fear of failing at something and the fear of not being accepted. All of these fears were just false evidence appearing real. The perception within my mind, in the beliefs that I acquired and constructed needed to be looked at. The easiest way to begin this process was to realize that as a soul having a physical experience, the perception of these fears was built upon a fallacy and that I was not those things even if they did occur in my life. My reaction to this boss didnt change until I dealt with the underlying fears and beliefs about myself and life. When I changed those, I was no longer angry when I had to deal with that person. However, the change in me definitely created a change in him and after most of our conversations he was the one with his own emotional wake to deal with. The vibration of our emotion is feedback on our lives and shouldnt be ignored. I have a relative that absolutely detests conflict and will go to any length to avoid any conversation or situation in which emotions might arise. It makes me wonder what they are doing with the inner conflicts that arise in their lives, are

these avoided as well? I hope not, after all, when we delve into the conflicts that cause the vibrations of life a wealth of treasure can be found about how we are creating and perceiving our life. My wife, Lisa and I are on the opposite side of that relative. We will let it all hang out and say whats on our minds at the drop of a hat. This leads to some wild exchanges with raised voices that often end with an absurd comment that changes it all to laughter. Those that witness these moments often do so with their mouths open and their eyes wide. Then they often comment how they wish they could do that with their spouse. Knowing you are not the emotion, you are not the thought that sparked the emotion, nor are you the belief that created the thought and perception make emotions far less threatening. When you understand the vibrational EnergyMotion within you is simply feedback that is asking you to look deeper within, it takes the fear out of experiencing them. It is when we stuff, deny, avoid and control our environment in an attempt to control which emotions we feel that life begins to go awry. When we dont use them as the feedback they were meant to be or allow ourselves to experience them in all of their intensity that we begin to affect our overall health and wellbeing. And when we dont look at where the thoughts, perceptions and beliefs from which our emotions stem from, we create more of them. Unexpressed, they intensify within us and perpetuate themselves in the events we create as our lives.

Living in a miraculous time

By Joan M. Ek It is a truly miraculous time we live in! Each day, as I work with clients and groups on a holistic level, I have the opportunity to coach, teach and learn from some truly incredible people who are making a difference in the world by challenging themselves to learn new, effective ways of being. In doing so, their lives change for the better, and they often mention that changes made in their way of being has a ripple effect in all areas of their well as the lives of everyone they come in contact with. In each instance, we work together to uncover what appears to be missing in their lives. For the vast majority of cases, gaining insight into how thoughts (beliefs) feed feelings, which feed actions, which feed outcomes is the key. Challenging ones self to become aware of the truth, let go of the past and make better choices in the present unlocks the door to better outcomes in the future. Knowing where you currently are and taking steps from there is how you begin moving to where you want to be. Without taking action, its all just wishful thinking. Working on a holistic (mind/body/spirit) level opens the door to many options. So many people are stuck in their lives because they simply refuse to see and deal with what is presently happening in their physical world. Many times there is avoidance of what

is and an attempt is made to control the physical world outside themselves, resulting in ineffective behavior and less optimal outcomes. One example of this is retail therapy. The reason it initially appears to work is that it starts with a feeling that feeds an action (I feel inadequate, so therefore if I allow myself this item, I will feel better). Its a temporary fix or diversion. The person never dealt with the root cause, which is the thought that they werent good enough in the first place. This type of thinking is also at the root of many addictive behaviors. This leads us to the mental/emotional level of being. Therapists work to help individuals recognize how thoughts and resultant behaviors are limiting them in their lives. They also work to provide insight into how their past feeds into their current situation. The limitation on this level is that no matter how much you know about your past, if youre unwilling to acknowledge it, release it and make changes in the present, youll continue to get the same results. And as its said, Insanity is doing the same thing(s) and expecting different results. For a true miracle to occur in ones life, insight needs to occur on a spiritual basis. This is the only level where unlimited potential, unlimited possibilities and unlimited solutions exist. We are all spiritual beings, and we all have a unique purpose for being on this earth. When each being steps into their unique destiny, the world is in perfect working order. Helping a person reconnect with their Spirit is like watching a bud come into bloom. They become light. As the light shines from within them, their presence and way of being helps to light the way for others. Our destiny here is to walk in alignment with our purpose. In Louise L. Hays Empowering Women, she states in A Healing Meditation: I rejoice in each passing year. My wealth of knowledge grows, and I am in touch with my wisdom. I feel the guidance of angels

i now contribute to life in every way i can, knowing i am love, joy, peace and infinite wisdom now and forever more.
every step of the way. I know how to live. I know how to keep myself youthful and healthy. My body is renewed at every moment. I am vital, vivacious, healthy, fully alive, and contributing to my last day. I am at peace with my age. I create the kind of relationships I want to have. I create the prosperity I need. I know how to be triumphant. My later years are my treasure years, and I become an elder of excellence. I now contribute to life in every way I can, knowing I am love, joy, peace and infinite wisdom now and forever more. And so it is! What an enlightening and empowering statement that is! It is important to question and challenge each and every belief you hold onto, for from our beliefs, we create our reality. Align yourself with an empowering belief system from within and you will be empowered every step of the way.

What is a Power of Attorney?

Legal terminology for seniors
By Desiree Janelle One of the most important things to set in motion is getting the legal paperwork done. The Power of Attorney for Health Care and Finances are essential, along with an Advanced Directive or Living Will. a POA covering both financial and medical situations must prepare two separate POAs, one dealing with financial issues and the second dealing with medical issues. Persons with a physical disability or limitations often set up financial POAs, with a family member as the agent, to allow the family member to do routine errands, such as making withdrawals from a loved ones bank account. Otherwise, it would be a burden for the family member with limitations to make the short trips personally to perform the banking transaction. The second reason for preparation of a financial POA is preventative in nature. If you lose the mental capacity to handle your own financial affairs, without a durable power of attorney your family members will need to go to court and have a

What is a Power of Attorney?

Power of Attorney (POA) is a document whereby one person (called the principal) authorizes another individual or entity (called an agent or attorney-in-fact) to act on behalf of the principal. The most common uses for a POA are financial transactions and health care decisions. The State of Wisconsin requires both a Power of Attorney and/or a POAforHealthCare;theycannotbecombined. An individual in Wisconsin desiring to have

guardian or conservator appointed over your assets. If you have previously set up a durable power of attorney and then lose mental capacity, the agent named in your POA will be able to handle your financial affairs without the time and attorney fees necessary to go to court to get a guardian and conservator appointed. (This can become very expensive if not handled correctly from the start.) A Durable POA is one that remains in force even after your loved one loses mental capacity. Unless a POA is durable, it will become ineffective at the time yourself or a family member becomes incompetent. A POA, which is not durable, fails to protect you against the potential of your family having to go to court and get a guardian or conservator appointed over your assets.

This is a matter of state law. Wisconsins states: A durable power of attorney is a power of attorney by which a principal, in writing, designates another as his/her agent and the writing contains the words, This power of attorney shall not be affected by subsequent disability or incapacity of the principal, orThis power of attorney shall become effective upon the disability or incapacity of the principal, or similar words showing the intent of the principal that the authority conferred shall continue notwithstanding the subsequent disability or incapacity of the principal. The first requirement is that there be a written and signed document and second, that the document contains words such as those above which clearly indicate who is intended to be the POA and to be effective even after he or she became incapacitated.

Advanced directives (living wills)

The term advanced directives refers to legal means by which individuals can express and, within certain limits, enforce their wishes regarding health care in the event that they become unconscious or otherwise mentally incapacitated. Common examples include living wills (which may direct families and physicians to withhold or withdraw life support if the person is terminally ill and unable to give directions) and powers of attorney for health care (which appoint and invest third parties with full authority to make healthcare decisions for incapacitated patients). When properly set up, these documents provide protection from prosecution and civil suit. A legal document created by an individual that names an executor (the person who will manage the estate) and beneficiaries (persons who will receive the estate at the time of death). A will is simply an instruction to the probate court telling that court how assets should be divided up. A will

wont keep assets out of probate. A trust, however, will keep assets private and out of the probate courts.

Living trust

This is a trust created by an individual (the grantor), and administered by another party (the trustee), while the grantor is still alive. The individual creating the living trust can be his or her own trustee while they are living and not incapacitated. Upon the individuals death, a successor trustee named in the trust will become the administrator. A living trust can be either revocable or irrevocable. At the time of death, a living trust avoids probate in court and, therefore, gets assets of the estate distributed much more quickly and with less cost than a will does. It also offers a higher level of confidentiality, as probate proceedings are a matter of public record. Trusts are usually harder to contest than wills. A living trust does take longer to put together than a will, and requires more ongoing maintenance. Although both, a will and a living trust, can be modified or revoked at any time before death, such changes are slightly more time

consuming for a living trust. Additionally, assets that a person wants to move to a living trust, such as real estate and bank or brokerage accounts, have to be retitled in the name of the trust.

Charitable giving

Charitable trusts, which involve making a gift to a charity and getting some payments back, can also save on both estate and income tax. There are many other complex trusts; learn about them on your own and then have an experienced estate planning lawyer draw up the documents you want. Contact an elder law attorney who can educate your family on necessary estate planning documents.
