Surge Protection and Grounding Requirements

If the telecommunications room is installed with certain indoor communication equipment such as the IDU, a complete ground system needs to be made available in the telecommunications room.

The requirements for the ground system in the telecommunications room are as follows:

The telecommunications room needs to be installed with certain lightning-proof devices such as surge protector and lightning band.

The telecommunications room needs to be jointly grounded. The working ground and the protection ground of the equipment need to share the same ground with the lightning-proof ground. The communication equipment and the power supply facility in the telecommunications room need to use the same protection ground bar if possible.

The ground resistance needs to be less than 10 ohms.

The cross-sectional area of the PGND cable from the equipment to the ground bar needs to be not less than 6 mm2.

When installing an IDU indoors, adhere to the following requirements:

When installing an IDU in a transmission cabinet, you need to connect the IDU to the ground bar of the transmission equipment through a separate ground cable, which needs to be a multiple-wire copper conductor cable with a cross-sectional area of not less than 6 mm2.

When installing an IDU separately (on a desk or on a wall), connect the IDU to the ground bar in the telecommunications room through a multiple-wire copper conductor cable with a cross-sectional area of not less than 6 mm2. The ground cable cannot be longer than five meters.

Figure 1 shows the ground connections of installing an IDU indoors.

When installing an IDU in an outdoor cabinet, adhere to the following requirements:

An IDU needs to be connected to the ground bar in the outdoor cabinet through a separate ground cable, which needs to be a multiple-wire copper conductor cable with a cross-sectional area of not less than 6 mm2.

If two or more outdoor cabinets are connected to each other through signal cables (except the situation where only optical fibers are available), you need to add a

lightning-protection unit to the electrical interface of the signals transmitted from the cabinets.

1. The cable between two cabinets is longer than five meters.

2. The cable between two cabinets is shorter than five meters, no equipotential
cable between cabinets exists, and the ground cable of a cabinet is longer than five meters.

3. The cable between two cabinets is shorter than five meters, the
interconnected cabinets do not share a ground bar, and no equipotential cable between cabinets exists. Figure 2 and Figure 3 show the ground connections of installing IDUs in outdoor cabinets.
