March 17 auction of gambling, coin-op, mechanical music machines

DENVER, PA.- Morphy Auctions March 17, 2012 auction of antique slot, coin-op, gambling and mechanical music machines will offer collectors their choice of more than 415 outstanding lots, including select pieces from the personal collection of the late Frank Zygmunt Sr. Additionally, the auction includes early Coca-Cola items and other types of antique advertising. Zygmunt, a Chicagoarea collector who founded the antique slot machine and jukebox business known as Zygmunt & Associates 25 years ago, was a prominent figure in coin-op circles. The top entry from the Zygmunt collection is a Caille nickel-finish double upright slot machine that combines 5-cent Eclipse and 25-cent Centaur models. A magnificent production in a tiger oak case, the machine is in fine working order. It is known to have been one Zygmunts favorites and is entered in the sale with an $80,000-$120,000 estimate. A visual dazzler from the Zygmunt collection is the H.C. Evans horse race wheel with colorful panels depicting jockeys on galloping mounts. When thewheel is spun, a number appears in a window that indicates the winning horse. Complete and all original, it could reach (Paris), the machine is distinguished by its multicolored $4,500$5,500. Another gambling highlight is an extremely rare Mills 50-cent Chicago jackpot upright slot machine. Designed for the 1900 Worlds Fair pierced-tin wheel and coppered adornments, including cabriole legs with bas-relief griffins and owls; and hounds heads. This particular machine is very special because it takes 50-cent coins, said Morphy. It was a rich mans amusement. At the turn of the century, 50 cents was a lot of money. In beautiful, all-original condition, the machine works well and is estimated at $45,000$65,000. The Mills 5-cent Cricket in the sale is believed to be the first all-original example of its type to appear at auction. The machine, which has an interchangeable bar that designates a $1 jackpot prize, is especially rare because of its original, untouched condition. Coin-operated penny arcade lots include a circa- 1904 Caille Bros. Mickey Finn Strength Tester, complete with original marquee and faceplate, est. $20,000-$30,000; and a circa-1930 Grandmothers Prediction fortune-telling machine, est. $25,000-$25,000. Additionally, the sale features a three-reeler tabletop gambling machine and a Watling 25-cent Rol-A-Top machine with rich red convex front replicating cherries. In excellent working order, the Rol-A-Top comes with its original f a c t o r y s t a n d . E s t i m a t e : $14,000-$16,000. Several exceptional mechanical music boxes will be sold, including a Regina 27-inch automatic changer with carved dragon motif and superior sound quality, $18,000-$22,000. A 25-inch upright music box, of unknown manufacture but identified as Style 202, is in original working condition and comes with 12 disks. The antique advertising section contains a number of rare and desirable Coca-Cola items, led by a self-framed 1904 Coca-Cola cameo sign in nearmint condition that features an elegantly gowned beauty of the day, est. $8,000-$12,000. A 1908 Coke calendar, near mint with a full pad, is entered in the sale with a $5,000-$8,000 estimate; while a near-mint 1918 Coke festoon with umbrella girl motif follows with a $3,000-$5,000 estimate. The auction breakdown is 100+ slots, 100+ vending and other coin-operated machines; 40+ music boxes and approximately 100 pieces of antique advertising. Most of the consignments came from long-held, high-end collections.

Houston memorabilia already poised for the auction block

The Golbe and Mail

A black velvet dress that belonged to Whitney Houston and a pair of earrings she wore in the 1992 film The Bodyguard will be sold to the highest bidder next month. Celebrity auctioneer Darren Julien said Sunday the pieces and other Houston items became available after the singer's unexpected death on Feb. 11 and will be included among a longplanned sale of Hollywood memorabilia such as a cane of Charlie Chaplin's, Clark Gable's jacket from Gone With the Wind and Charlton Heston's staff from The Ten Commandments. Julien said celebrity collectibles often become available after their namesakes die. It proves a point that these items, they're an investment, Julien said. You buy items just like a stock. Buy at the right time and sell at the right time, and they just increase in value. But could it be too soon to profit from Houston's death? She was only buried on Saturday. It's a celebration of her life, Julien

said. If you hide these things in fear that you're going to offend someone her life is to be celebrated. These items are historic now that she passed. They become a part of history. They should be in museums. She's lived a life and had a career that nobody else has ever had. Houston is someone who's going to maintain a collectability, he said. For people who are fans of Whitney Houston and never would have had a chance to meet her and never got to talk to her, these are items that literally touched a part of her life. They are a way to relate to her or be a part of her life without having known her. The singer's floor-length black dress is valued at $1,000 (U.S.) but likely to collect much more. The same is true for the vest she wore in The Bodyguard, listed at $400, and the faux-pearl earrings that start at $600. Houston fans and other collectors can bid online, by phone or in person during the Hollywood Legends auction on March 31 and April 1. Lots will be shown during a free public exhibition beginning March 19 at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, Calif., just blocks from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where Houston died at age 48.

Jeremy Lin jersey fetches $42,388 in charity auction

Feb. 21 (Bloomberg) -- The jersey that New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin wore while outdueling National Basketball Association scoring leader Kobe Bryant was auctioned for charity at $42,388. The winning bid in the Charitybuzz.com auction that ended today came from a person in the New York area who requested anonymity, Glenda Luft, a spokeswoman for the website, said in an e-mail. There were 34 bids cast since the auction began on Feb. 13. The opening bid for the listing, which included four tickets to the Knicks' home game tomorrow night against the Atlanta Hawks and a chance to meet Lin at the game, drew an opening bid of $1,100. Lin, the first Chinese- or Taiwanese-

American to play in the NBA and the first Harvard University graduate to join the league since Ed Smith in 1953-54, has led the Knicks (16-17) to an 8-2 record since coming off the bench to score 25 points and hand out seven assists in a Feb. 4 win against New Jersey.

County seizes, auctions home over $400 tax bill

HYDE PARK, NY (WABC) -- It was a nightmare scenario for one Dutchess County homeowner. His house sold out from under him all for an unpaid tax bill worth just a few hundred bucks. Was the county justified or is this simply an example of government run amuck? Last year, Marc says Dutchess County sold his weekend home of 25 years without his knowledge. All because he forgot to pay a three-year-old tax bill charged by his local fire department worth just $416. "I was just totally stunned," Dr. Spero said, "We owed $416 in fire taxes and they took the house and sold it for $93,500." Marc says his first warning was an eviction notice posted on his house's front door, giving him just 10 days to vacate. "We were scared to death and we had no idea what was going on," Dr. Spero said. Marc says he could be kicked out any day from his prized Bauhaus-inspired house that's been his weekend refuge for almost a quarter century. This house is really a member of my family," Spero said. Marc's staved off eviction by filing a lawsuit against the new owner and Dutchess County. The new owner had no comment, and the county contends it notified Marc properly of his home's pending auction by posting a sign in front. But Marc questions whether the sign was even on his land, or instead on an empty lot next door. "It never even occurred to me. I thought someone had bought the lot next door," Spero said. The county also said it mailed a dozen certified letters to his house, but since Spero's only there on weekends they were declared undeliverable. Other letters went to his mortgage company, but the county mis-addressed the mailing to Chase Mortgage, sending three letters to Edison, New York, not New Jersey. The process of evicting Dr. Spero and his wife from their home has been stopped because he is challenging the constitutionality of the sale in court. As for the county, it also said it never knew this was Marc's weekend home. The county says his home is listed in its records as his primary residence.
