YOUR COMPLIMENTARY WEEKLY NEWSPAPER SINCE 2006 February 24, 2012
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili
THE father of the murdered Singh siblings denied he once asked his wife to approach his children's accused killer Max Sica to take part in a sexual threesome.
Vijay Singh Denies Asking Sica To Sleep With Wife
Vijay Singh was being cross-examined
on the eighth day of a Supreme Court
trial in Brisbane in which Sica, 41,
has pleaded not guilty to murdering
Neelma Singh, 24, Kunal Singh, 18,
and Sidhi Singh, 12, at their home at
Bridgeman Downs, in Brisbane's north,
on April 21, 2003.
Barrister Sam Di Carlo, for Sica, put
it to Vijay Singh that he had asked his
wife Shirley Singh to approach Sica to
have sex with them.
He asked if Vijay Singh had thought
Sica was gay and would take part in a
sexual threesome.
"No, I don't agree with that," Vijay
Singh said.
Mr Di Carlo accused Vijay Singh of
wanting Shirley Singh to have sex with
Sica and he could listen over the phone
while he was in Fiji.
Vijay Singh rejected the claim and also
that he pressured Shirley Singh into
going to the casino to pick up strange
men for sex so that she could tell him
about it.
He also denied he had "turned on" Sica
when he discovered Sica and Shirley
had pretended to have sex to please
him.
Vijay Singh agreed that Shirley Singh
would "tease him" but she would do
nothing.
Mr Di Carlo asked whether Vijay
Singh had hired a prostitute to come
to his house for sex when they lived at
Stafford.
"It happened twice ... the children were
not home," Vijay Singh said.
He agreed with Mr Di Carlo, Shirley
Singh would get drunk and be ill when
he hired the prostitutes.
Vijay Singh agreed that he had sex
with his nephew's wife in his offce and
videotaped it.
Earlier, Mr Di Carlo asked extensive
questions about when Vijay Singh
sold his business to V.C. Dutta, who
he regarded as brother-in-law, and on
behalf of V.L. Dutta, who he regarded
as a nephew.
He was to receive $500,000 (Fijian)
and was to get another $250,000 in
Australia.
Mr Di Carlo said V.L. Dutta couldn't
repay $140,000 in time and they started
to negotiate an agreement variation.
Vijay Singh agreed when he sold the
business there was a restraint of trade
clause which prevented him from
working in Fiji in any similar business
However, when the Duttas defaulted
they renegotiated the contract with the
restraint clause removed and a new
interest rate.
Mr Di Carlo accused Vijay Singh of
pressing the point while V.C. Dutta
was sick in bed and dying but Vijay
Singh rejected the claim.
Vijay Singh also said he didn't recall
whether he argued with his wife Shirley
about pressing V.C. Dutta when he was
sick.
"That is Shirley's version I don't agree
with that," he said.
Mr Di Carlo said as a result of the
restraint of trade being lifted Vijay
Singh had gone back to Fiji and started
a new company which was in direct
opposition to the Duttas.
The court heard V.C. Dutta passed
away, their business failed and they
couldn't pay the balance of money
owed to Vijay Singh who took court
action against them.
"You got a judgment in your favour
and you bankrupted him (V.L. Dutta),"
Mr Di Carlo said.
"I don't call it bankrupt," Vijay Singh
said.
Mr Di Carlo alleged V.L. Dutta had to
sell his only remaining property: "You
steamrolled them as if strangers."
"I did a business dealing, it was
protocol," Vijay Singh replied,
agreeing business was business.
Mr Singh also told Mr Di Carlo he
originally had no problems with Max
Sica.
On two occasions when he argued with
Neelma - once when she was working
on a computer with Sica and on another
occasion when they were playing with
Sica's children in a park - Sica had not
joined in.
Vijay Singh also agreed he originally
had a good relationship with the Sica
family and they had looked after his
family when Vijay Singh was away on
business for long periods.
The trial, before Justice John Byrne,
continues.

Police Offcers Urged To Lead A
Disciplined Life
Fiji police offcers have been urged
to make personal changes and have
a more disciplined life frst before
changing societys behaviour.
Speaking to 109 offcers at the Fiji
Police Leadership Symposium, Fiji
National University (FNU) trainer
and consultant Satendra Nair said
one of the challenges faced by police
offcers today is that members of the
community are becoming more aware
and smarter than them.
Leaders should always be a step
ahead of its people in order to ensure
everyones safety, said Nair.
He said police offcers need to walk
the talk and improve its operations
by fnding out what the real problems
are.
He also said they need to keep
evaluating on certain issues that they
have encountered in all societies.
Offcers were also advised that they
need to have a customer service
mindset in order to provide good
service to members of the public.
Man Attacks Pregnant Wife And
Cousin
A MAN has been jailed for fve and a
half years for knifng his three-month
pregnant partner and her cousin.
Asesela Rabia was charged with one
count of grievous harm and a second
act with intent to cause grievous harm.
The partner's cousin was a diabetic.
The court heard that on the night of
February 27 last year, Rabia wanted to
sleep with his de facto partner but she
could not tolerate his smell and decided
instead to sleep in the living room.
Enraged, Rabia grabbed the victim and
struck her four times with the blunt
side of a knife before striking her on
the head and hand with the sharp side.
The court heard that his pregnant
partner then ran to her cousin's
bedroom but the latter was also struck
with the knife. High Court judge
Justice Priyantha Fernando said the
frst complainant who was pregnant
suffered injuries to her head and also
lost her right hand after it was severed.
The second complainant was a known
diabetic patient and had a laceration
over the left thumb associated with
fracture which required medical
attention.
Justice Fernando took into account
the Domestic Violence Act while
sentencing Rabia. "In this case, the
nature of the injuries to the frst
complainant is very serious," Justice
Fernando said.
"Her hand was severed as a result of
the accused striking with the cane knife
when the victim was three months
pregnant.
"Her head was also injured where large
amount of tissues were cut."
Justice Fernando sentenced Rabia to
fve and a half years in prison with a
non-parole period of fve years.
He also issued a domestic violence
restraining order against Rabia
ordering that he stay away from the
victim and not commit any form of
assault or threat on her in future.
The maximum sentence of act with
intent to cause grievous harm is life
imprisonment.

Tourism Fiji Scoops Prestigious
Award At AIME 2012
Fiji has beaten off strong opposition
from a feld of international
competition to take out top honours at
the 2012 Australia-Pacifc Incentives
& Meetings EXPO (AIME) where the
Tourism Fiji stand has received the
Best Stand Over 36m award.
One of only three awards presented
to stand holders, the stands were
judged on a list of criteria including
originality and creative input by
industry specialists Linda Gaunt of
Meetings & Events Australia (MEA),
Joyce DiMascio of Exhibition
& Event Association Australasia
(EEAA) and Noor Ahmad Hamid
from the International Congress and
Conventions Association (ICCA).
The Tourism Fiji stand was recognised
for its bright and eye-catching structure
which according to judges beautifully
captured the spirit of Fiji.
Acknowledging the award the Acting
CEO of Tourism Fiji Michael Meade
said the accolade also represented
strong recognition of the potential Fiji
has achieved in recent years in its quest
to become and further build upon its
reputation as the powerhouse of the
South Pacifcs Meetings and Incentive
industry.
This position, he said, would be added
to within the space of two years when
the new 1500-seat convention centre to
be built in Fiji as part of the new casino
and integrated resort development is
open at Denarau Island.
Accompanying the Fiji team at
AIME this year were Air Pacifc, ATS
Pacifc, Rosie DMC, Blue Lagoon
Cruises, Captain Cook Cruises, the
Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort &
Spa, Shangri-Las The Fijian Resort &
Spa, the Warwick Fiji Resort & Spa,
Plantation Island Resort, Sonaisali
Island Resort & Spa, Tadrai Island
Resort, Adrenalin Fiji, the Naviti
Resort Fiji, Starwood Hotels and the
Softel Fiji Resort & Spa.
Now in its 20th year, AIME is
recognised as the premier event in the
Asia-Pacifc region for the meetings
and events industry, annually attracting
hundreds of international exhibitors.
Fire Chief Raises Concerns
THE National Fire Authority has
raised its concerns about the recent
spate of home fre incidents around
the country.
The authority recorded three structural
fres within four days last week.
Acting authority CEO Aseri Radrodro
renewed his plea to people to observe
fre safety and prevention principles at
all times.
"These fres have increased the number
of structural fres this year to 12
compared to nine for the same period
last year," said Mr Radrodro
"House fres occur when people pay
less attention to fre safety, especially
with the use of electricity and fre
ignition sources such as matches,
candles, prayer diya and cooking left
unattended in the house.
"NFA can only do so much - it is up
to the adults in the family to see that
proper measures are taken in regard to
fre safety."
Fees Unaffected By Outsourcing:
Health Ministry
Fees will remain the same despite
moves by the Ministry of Health to
outsource its morgue facilities at major
hospitals.
Fijis Ministry of Health Spokesman
Peni Namotu said the frst night will be
free of charge but $30 will be applied
after three nights and $50 after fve.
This is the existing fees and will be
used by the new owner, he said.
The privatization of the old
mortuary is part of their cost cutting
measures and to focus on their call
functions.
The ministry is implementing
outsourcing in divisional hospitals says
Namotu.
He said they will also outsource the
laundry, kitchen and the security
department.
Namotu said the money which was
used to fund these services will now be
used to renovate hospitals, medicines
and medical apparatus.
About 3000 Still Unemployed In
The West After Floods
Almost 3000 individuals who were

who have lost their jobs.
She said many small businesses were

Air Pacifc Wings Of Hope Gives $30,000 To Friend Fiji For
Childrens Education Relief
Fijis national carrier Air Pacifc,
through its Wings of Hope community
program, donated F$30,000 to
Lautoka-based non- government
organization, FRIEND (Foundation
for Rural Integrated Enterprises and
Development) for education relief to
children affected by the recent foods
in Fiji.
Wings of Hope is the charity arm of
Air Pacifc and funded through various
means, including staff fundraising
initiatives, corporate contributions and
Cash for Kids - Air Pacifcs program
that allows passengers to contribute
unused foreign currency on its fights.
It is focused primarily on assisting the
children of Fiji through various forms
of assistance. The money donated by
Air Pacifc will be used by FRIEND
to help Fijian children affected by the
recent food stay in school.
As Fijis national airline, we view it
as one of our responsibilities to assist
local communities - especially in their
time of need following the recent foods
in Western and Northern Fiji, said Air
Pacifc Managing Director and CEO
Dave Pfieger during the ceremony to
mark the donation.
It is an honour and a privilege for the
employees of Air Pacifc to provide this
funding to FRIEND. FRIEND is an
outstanding charity organization that
does superb work supporting Fijian
children. They are highly deserving of
our support, and we want to applaud
them for their efforts in assisting
children who live in communities
that suffered as a result of the recent
fooding. Mr. Pfieger thanked Air
Pacifc staff and airline customers for
their contributions to the Wings of
Hope charity chest.
Our passengers compassion and
generosity has made the size of
this contribution possible. We hear
over and over again from them that
after experiencing the warmth and
friendliness of the Fijian people,
they are pleased to lend their support
to Fiji, Fijian children and Fijian
communities.
FRIEND Founder and Director Sashi
Kiran thanked Air Pacifc for the
donation upon receiving the cheque
from Mr. Pfieger at the airlines Head
Offce in Nadi.
It is great that the National airline,
the Air Pacifc and its Wings of Hope
program have stepped forward in these
diffcult times to support the food
affected children, said Ms Kiran.
We have had a scholarship program
for children in need from some of the
poorest communities in the country
for some time, but the need this
year is greater than ever because so
many communities were fooded,
children lost their books, and parents
livelihoods were affected.
As a result, this kind donation from
Air Pacifc will allow us to work
with affected communities, parents
and schools, to continue the critical
education of those children most in
need by providing school fees, books
or stationery.
Bank Hosts Financial Literacy Workshop
LAUTOKA market vendors have been
given another avenue to ensure their
businesses generate more money for
their families.
Bank of Baroda hosted a fnancial literacy
workshop where vendors were shown
options on how to get loans from the bank.
The vendors said they were grateful
to be shown how they could borrow
money and sustaining their businesses
while making repayments.
Lautoka Market Vendors Association
president Makereta Rika said it was the
frst time a bank had come to offer the
vendors help.
"This workshop has helped us because
many of us don't have a lot and when
we are given an opportunity like this,
we make sure we make use of it," said
Mrs Rika.
She thanked the bank for offering
them incentives to start or expand their
business.
Bank branch head Pushpa Singh said
they wanted to teach the vendors how
to open a savings account because it
would allow them to apply for loans.
"This workshop is part of the Fiji
Government fnancial literacy training
and we wanted to educate them on
savings, micro deposits, micro fnance
and how they can develop their
business," said Mrs Singh.

Promoting Economic Growth Through Ict
The Japan-Pacifc Information &
Communication Technology (ICT)
Centre will be an information and
knowledge hub that will promote the
development of knowledge societies
and a Centre of Excellence in ICTs
in the Pacifc, says the Prime Minister
Voreqe Bainimarama.
Prime Minister Bainimarama made
these comments at the offcial opening
of the new $18 million Multi Purpose
Lecture Theatre at the Japan-Pacifc
ICT Centre at the University of the
South Pacifc.
The Multi Purpose Theatre, funded
by the Government of Japan, is the
second phase of the ICT Centre and
was offcially opened by the PM
Bainimarama and the Ambassador of
Japan, H.E Mr Yukata Yoshizawa
PM Bainimarama and Japanese
Ambassador H.E Mr Yutaka Yoshizawa
at the opening of the new Multi Purpose
Lecture Theatre
The Prime Minister said new
opportunities for economic growth and
development and social transformation
continues through the rapid
development of ICTs.
In the past, a nations wealth was largely
dependent on its natural resources, its
labour force and capital base. While
natural, human and fnancial resources
remain important, through the evolution
and impact of ICTs, the importance of
knowledge, or the transformation of
information into know-how, has rapidly
increased, Mr Bainimarama said.
Information and Communication
Technologies (ICT) increasingly
transform our lives and will continue
to shape the way we communicate,
govern, manage, and conduct business.
New opportunities for economic
growth and development and social
transformation has been presented by
the rapid development of ICTs.
The head of Government also
highlighted the importance
Government places on ICTs and the
potential that ICTs offer in realizing
Fijis vision of empowered Fijians and
a modern economy.
We have taken a number of steps
such as the liberalization of the
telecommunication sector; the launch
of the national broad-band policy,
which is the frst for any South Pacifc
Island nation; the provision of free
telecenters which is to grow even
further this year; the implementation of
the spectrum plan which has, amongst
other things, allowed for another free
to air television; and the growing
interaction and collaboration by the
Fijian Government with ITU.
PM Bainimarama added that the Multi
Purpose Lecture Theatre also signifes
Japans long standing relationship with
Fiji and the Pacifc.
Fiji is proud to provide and convert
its bilateral assistance from Japan into
a regional initiative through the USP.
This means that Fiji is sharing its
benefts with her sister Pacifc nations.
It is with deepest gratitude and sincere
appreciation that I acknowledge the
generous fnancial support of the
Government of Japan and her people for
this magnifcent gift. It is a signifcant
contribution made by Japan at a time
of global fnancial crisis recently
exacerbated by severe natural disasters
and climate challenges. Given such
circumstances, the successful delivery
and completion of the project has
made this gift even more valuable and
meaningful, and it shall be treasured,
PM Bainimarama said.
The new lecture theatre has a seating
capacity of over 300 and is ftted with
stage equipment and video projector.

Westpac Helps With Flood Relief Efforts
Westpac presented a cheque of

Disaster Relief Appeal, $5,000 to
Save the Children Fiji and $5,000
to the Foundation for Education of
Needy Children in Fiji (FENC) to
help with the food recovery efforts.
This follows earlier donations of
$7,000 worth food rations made to
the Rama Krishna Mission Centre.

Acting General Manager, Gavin
Kinnear said, Our thoughts are with
those who have lost their loved ones
and their belongings during the recent
foods. Even today we continue to
read reports of the after-effects of the
fooding.
Westpacs support to relief efforts
has been on a few fronts, with
immediate food rations channeled
through the Rama Krishna Mission
Centre, disaster relief options for
impacted customers, a clothes
drive initiated by Westpac Fiji staff
and now a donation to the FENC,
Save the Children Fiji and the
PMs Disaster Relief Appeal. Our
approach has been to help with short
term immediate needs and also to
address long term needs as a result
of the floods.
Westpac staff in Australia boosted the
donations to the charities chosen by
Westpac Fiji.
Our donation to FENC and Save
the Children Fiji will help replace
lost educational material so that the
children can go back to school and
continue their education.
We hope that these relief efforts
including our disaster relief options for
our customers will bring some relief to
those badly affected by the foods now
and help with future needs, said Mr
Kinnear.
Westpac is encouraging their customers
to visit their nearest branch or contact
their relationship manager to discuss
fnancial options available if theyre
experiencing diffculties as a result of
the foods.
Older Persons Council To Be
Established By June
The Inter-Agency Working Committee
on Elderly (IAWCE) met this week to
discuss the action plan to establish the
National Council for Older Persons
(NCOP) in Fiji.
Once established, the National
Council for Older Persons (NCOP)
will spearhead Fijis National Policy
Framework for the Elderly which
primarily focuses on addressing the
wellbeing of elderly persons in the
country.
Ministry of Social Welfare Permanent
Secretary and Chairperson for the
IAWCE, Mr Govind Sami said the
way forward now for the committee
is to look at the establishment of
NCOP.
Fijis National Policy Framework
for the Elderly (2011 to 2015) was
launched last year and now the
committees task is to look at the action
plan to foster the establishment of
National Council for Older Persons,
Mr Sami said.
The objective of the Council is to
strengthen the partnership between
Government, Non-Government
Organizations (NGOs), Civil
Society Organizations and
private sectors along with village
communities in creating an inclusive,
supportive and healthy environment
for all the senior citizens in Fiji, he
added said.
He said given the timeline, the NCOP
is expected to be established by June
this year.
As part of ensuring policy awareness,
he said the key areas of the policy
will also be translated into vernacular
languages and disseminated into rural
communities.
Arrangements will be made for the
translation of the Ageing Policy and an
integrated rural development approach
will be taken as a means to spread
awareness into the four divisions, he
said.
He reiterated that this policy is a
living document and will provide
a direction to the Government as
an advisory body on promoting the
rights and interests of elderly in
Fiji.
The Committee is grateful to the
United Nations Population Fund
(UNPFA) for its consistent support
towards Fiji Ageing Policy and we
have a work plan and as per that
work plan we will be looking at the
establishment of the National Council
for Older Persons in Fiji, Mr Sami
added.

Fiji to improving literacy levels and
promotes the use of libraries around
the country.
The Ministry of Information, National

will spearhead Fijis participation at
this event and coordinate it closely
with the National Library Week.
Library Services of Fiji director Ms
Merewalesi Vueti said that while World
Book Day will be celebrated in Fiji on
March 1st 2012, the National Library
Week will be celebrated from the 8th
to the 15 of September 2012.
The theme for the World Book Day
is A book is a garden carried in the

She said the celebration is also an
opportunity to promote and advocate
the imperative role that libraries play
in society.
We would like to encourage schools
to organize their own program to mark
this national event.
The events committee has
recommended activities that Schools
can organize in their own schools
like writing up stories, choosing
and reviewing their favorite author,
storytelling on their favorite book.
There is also the DEAR (Drop
Everything and Read) program and
many more activities.

Government To Be Firm With Figures
Government will manage the disaster
relief from its existing pool of funds,
says Ministry of Finance permanent
secretary Filimone Waqabaca.
To avoid a similar scenario that has
happened in the past with disaster
management funds squandered
by authorities, the Bainimarama
Government is determined that
assistance will be provided in a
systematic and transparent manner.
On the issue of food damage
assessment fgure, Mr Waqabaca
said the actual fgures would only be
available in April following the frst
quarter assessments.
At this stage, Government remains
committed to trying to fund the disaster
within the resources that we have, he
said.
He emphasized that Government will
be quite frm with numbers, which was
why offcials have been on the ground
doing assessment.
Mr Waqabaca has applauded the
measures put in by his counterpart
at the Ministry of Provincial
Development and National Disaster
Management Office, Mr Inia
Seruiratu who has also been leading
the austerity move on management
of public finances used for flood
relief.
I think in the past perhaps there was
some laxity in the management of
funds, in the management of relief
assistance that was provided during
that period, he said.
So this time around, as I mentioned,
we want to do things correctly and it
was emphasized by the Provincial
Development permanent secretary who
has taken the lead role in this regard.
Mr Waqabaca said while the nature
disasters cannot be avoided its impact
can be mitigated through dredging of
the rivers, attending to drainage and
other measures.

Fiji Needs To Pave Way For 2014
Election: IMF
The International Monetary Fund
on Tuesday called for the military
government of Fiji to relax emergency
measures in preparation for a promised
2014 election, a rare Fund foray into
domestic politics.
In its annual report on Fiji's economy,
the IMF said its mission team in the
country had found the economy needed
structural reforms and a "concrete
plan" ahead of the frst elections since
a 2006 military coup.
"Removing structural impediments to
growth is critically important. Many of
the mission's interlocutors suggested
that relaxing the emergency regulation
and establishing a clear path toward
a 2014 election would be the key
measures to boost investor confdence,"
the report said.
"The current government took power in
a 2006 coup, relations with traditional
donors are strained, and FDI (foreign
direct investment) has dropped sharply,
though emerging donors remain
engaged and have provided assistance,"
the IMF added.
"Elections expected for 2009 did
not occur, but the government has
subsequently announced plans for
an election in 2014 and provided
an allocation in the 2012 budget for
electoral preparations."
IMF comments on domestic politics
are rare; the report was approved by the
Fund's executive board at the conclusion
of the review on January 20.
Fiji's military strongman Voreqe
Bainimarama announced on January 2
he would end emergency laws in place
since 2009, when a Fiji court ruled his
2006 coup was illegal.
The IMF executive board said in
an accompanying statement to the
report that Fiji faces a preponderance
of negative risks "given political
uncertainties, structural weaknesses,
and the fragile global economy."
Two New Cabinet Ministers For
Fiji Sworn In
Two new cabinet ministers were sworn
in by His Excellency the President
Ratu Epeli Nailatikau at Government
House, Suva.
Mr Viliame Naupoto is now the
Minister for Youth and Sports and
Mr Jone Usumate is the Minister
for Labour, Industrial Relations and
Employment.
Prior to his appointment, Mr Naupoto
was the Ministry of Fisheries and
Forests permanent secretary. He
also served in the same capacity in
the Offce of the Prime Minister and
was also the former Director of the
Immigration Department.
Mr Usamate is a former Chief
Executive Offcer for the Training and
Productivity Authority of Fiji (TPAF)
and was the Director for Technical
and Vocational Education at the Fiji
National University
Minister Usumate takes the oath of
offce
Minister Usumate was directly
responsible for creating and
maintaining new standards throughout
the Fiji National University.
Government said that the creation
of a separate Ministry for Youth and
Sports with its own cabinet minister
is necessary in light of Fijis growing
youth population in the urban, rural
and outer island areas. The Ministry of
Youth and Sports will now strengthen
its focus in addressing the increasingly
special and complex needs of Fijis
youths. The ministry will also assist
Government in preparing our young
people who will be eligible to vote in the
2014 general election and by ensuring
that they understand their rights to vote
and the importance of their votes in
electing a new government.
Government also recognises the
contribution of sports to the overall
development of Fiji, and the need to
develop this sector for socio-economic
growth.
The creation of a new and separate
cabinet minister for the Ministry
of Labour, Industrial Relations
and Employment is indicative of
Governments commitment to labour
related issues in the country.
Mr Jone Usamate brings with him a
wealth of experience and this will be of
great beneft to Fijis Labour, Industrial
Relations and Employment sector.
The Prime Minister Voreqe
Bainimarama welcomed the two new
appointees into cabinet and said that he
looked forward to working closely with
both of them in moving the country
forward.
The two new Ministers have already
started their duties in their respective
portfolios.

Fiji Pursues Health Cooperation
With India
Fijis High Commissioner to India,
Yogesh Karan said that doctor shortages
in the country could be a thing of
the past if talks with Indian medical
professionals prove successful.
Karan says the Fiji diplomatic
mission in India is constantly in talks
with hospitals in India to establish
cooperation.
We have been meeting quite often with
three hospitals on the possibility to have
Indian doctors come over and work here
on a volunteer basis, he said.
Talks have been very positive at the
moment and we will be able to see if
this good news turns into reality soon.
He added talks are also ongoing to
have Fijian medical students train and
study in India.
We have quite a few memorandums
of understanding (MOUs) in the draft
stages but we are hoping to speed up
the process, High Commissioner
Karan said.

Infation To Come Down Further
Government is expecting infation to
come down further to a comfortable
level of three to fve per cent in the
coming months.
Against the backdrop of the Euro-
zone fnancial crisis and unstable
international market, Fiji rounded off
2011 with a not very high infation rate
of 7.7 per cent.
Ministry of Finance permanent
secretary Filimone Waqabaca said
there were three main issues that
pushed infation up last year but two of
these will not be a factor this year.
He said the higher global prices for
fuel and food had pushed up domestic
prices as well.
The second issue is due to the increase
in VAT (Value Added Tax). Note that
last year VAT increased from 12.5 per
cent to 15 per cent so that contributed
to the increase in the prices of goods,
Mr Waqabaca said.
The rise on the electricity tariff structure
also contributed to an increase in
infation and the combination of these
factors led to infation being pushed up
to 7.7 per cent, Mr Waqabaca said.
The Governments thinking is line with
what the International Monetary Fund
executive board had concluded after
their consultation in 2011.
Infation should be around 6 percent
by the beginning of 2012 and fall
toward 3.5 percent over the medium
term, refecting the anemic growth
outlook, projected small declines in oil
prices, and the authorities tight control
of public wages, the recently released
report had stated.
Mr Waqabaca said there were several
reasons why they expected infation
fgure to fall and on the top of the list is
the easing of world crude oil and food
prices.
Then economic growth is modest as
we are forecasting around 2.3 per cent
so that also helps dampen prices.
Thirdly, electricity tariff rate and VAT
will no longer be in the formula as was
the case last year as it will become a
base issue, Mr Waqabaca explained.
Infation is good at a manageable level
as it means that money is foating in
the economy and that the public has
the buying power but it should be
contained within the 3-5 per cent range
otherwise price of goods will escalate.

The United States Embassy in Fiji
together with the Library Services of
Fiji commemorated the Black History
Month at the Western Regional Library

ANZ Fiji To Cut 40 Jobs
Approximately 40 employees of ANZ Fiji
will lose their jobs as part of a strategic
review being conducted by the bank.
This was confrmed by ANZ chief
executive offcer Pacifc Central,
Norman Wilson.
He said the redundancies targeted the
non core banking services of ANZ.
"We are in the midst of a review
of our internal service and support
staff which may lead to a number of
redundancies in respect of roles such
as drivers, messengers, gardeners and
housemaids," said Mr Wilson.
Mr Wilson said they would look to
redeploy the displaced staff in ANZ
businesses where possible and were
making arrangements to assist staff
with fnding new jobs.
"We expect many of the domestic staff
will be able to continue in their jobs
but working for our staff on individual
contracts."
"We also intend to talk to a microfnance
organisation to see if there is potential
for the others to form a co-operative
that in turn can provide services to us."
Conditional Sales Illegal
The Consumer Council of Fiji would
like to remind all supermarkets and
shops to refrain from conditional
selling as it is illegal and cases have
gone to court.
The Nasinu Magistrate's Court recently
found a prominent supermarket in
Nasinu guilty of conditional selling.
The retailer was guilty of refusing to sell
goods unless other goods are purchased
which is contrary to provisions in the
Commerce Commission Decree 2010.
The supermarket refused to sell milk
to consumers unless other goods are
purchased on condition that a $10
purchase of other goods was made.
The court's verdict should be a timely
reminder to traders that conditional
selling is illegal and amounts to unfair
trade practices.
According to Section 87E (1) of the
Commerce Commission Decree 2010,
Every person commits an offence
against this decree who, whether as
a principal or agent and whether by
himself or his agent, refuses to sell
any goods or services except on the
condition that other goods or services
are also purchased from him or any
other person nominated by him or
attempts to impose any such condition.
Conditional selling has become a
common practice by unscrupulous
traders who take advantage of
vulnerable consumers. About 30 cases
of conditional selling were reported
to the council last year. These cases
included some secluded neighborhood
and rural shops taking advantage of
their location and forcing consumers to
buy other things which they don't need
or want. In many instances consumers
"We are creating another 10 roles
to refect the changing aspects of
facilities management and the need for
jobholders to multitask to meet peaks
in different business activities.
"We hope to fll most of these 10 roles
from staff redeployed."
Mr Wilson said the exercise had
been under review for a couple of
months and advised customers that the
redundancies would not affect ANZs
core banking operations in any way.
He also stated the recent job cuts
announced in ANZ Australia would not
have any impact on their operations in
Fiji or the ANZ Pacifc operations in
the Kalabu Tax Free Zone.

business district and therefore are
not easily spotted by the enforcement
agencies. Such small communities are
at the mercy of small shop owners who
breach consumers' rights and break the
law.
The council is warning traders in
isolated residential areas to stop this
unethical behaviour.
Meanwhile, the council would like to
urge consumers to be proactive and
report on retailers who refuse to sell
goods or services unless other goods
or services are purchased. Consumers
should assert their rights under the law
and also inform the offending retailers
that such practices are illegal.
Members of the public have been
advised by the National Disaster
Management Offce (NDMO) to
remain vigilant and alert as the cyclone
season is still far from over.
The Nadi weather offce has also
forecasted more rain for the weekend as
a weak trough of low pressure remains
slow moving over the northeastern
parts of the group.
Cloudy periods with some showers
can be experienced over Vanua Levu,
Taveuni, Kadavu and nearby smaller
islands, Lau and the Lomaiviti group
elsewhere, fne apart from brief showers
especially in the afternoon or evening.
The disaster coordinating offce
continues to receive updates from the
various Divisional and District agencies
of the progress of the recovery work on
the ground as well as the distribution of
relief food rations to affected families.
Girmit Centre in Lautoka is the only
active Evacuation Centre and is now
accommodating a total 153 evacuees
all of which are iTaukei.
Government continues to provide
resources for the completion of the
post disaster cleanup program in the
Western Region.

Push To Grow
More Rice In Fiji
Fiji's Agricultural Ministry is behind a
push for the country to grow its own
rice, and decrease its overseas imports.
The Department of Agriculture says it
will bring in machinery for farmers to
aid local production.
Fiji imports estimated $40 million
Fijian dollars in rice each year.
The Department's Senior Agriculture
Offcer, John Matawalu, has told the
media the government wants to revive
the local rice industry.
"We are trying to reduce the imports
of rice price now and that's why
the government is putting up some
programs to try to reduce this from $40
million to $5 million come 2020," he
said.
"We are trying to revive the rice
industry".

the relief efforts.
He said the President and Government
of Nauru extended the assistance to the

Fijian Governments effort to assist the
people affected.
Mr Kephas said this was in line with
the sentiments expressed in the proverb

Concern For The Pacifc - NDC
The Western Pacifc Regional Director
for the World Health Organisation
(WHO) Dr Shin Young-Soo is concerned
at how the vast changes to lifestyles in the
Pacifc have greatly affected the health of
those living in the region.
Dr Young-Soo met with Fijis Ministry
of Health to look at challenges faced by
the ministry and various engagement
opportunities between Fiji and the
world health body.
Looking at non-communicable
diseases (NCDs) and the statistics over
the last 20 years in terms of mobility
and fatalities, there has been a dramatic
increase in NCD due to lifestyle
changes, Dr Young-Soo said.
Dr Young-Soo said there has been an
increase in diabetes with a prevalence
rate of 40 per cent in the Pacifc which
is dangerous.
Ninety per cent in the Pacifc are obese
and this poses other health problems.
We have to address this issue seriously
as our eating habits are changing as we
are consuming more processed food
while behavior and family life has also
changed.
Dr Young-Soo said the only
intervention is early stage education
and the responsibility lies with all
sectors of the community to address
the NCD crisis in the Pacifc.
Fijis Ministry of Health says the
challenge for the ministry is the
premature deaths occurring in the
population as 82 per cent of all deaths
are attributed to NCDs.
Deputy Secretary Public Health, Dr
Joe Koroivueta said coronary heart
diseases and strokes are have been
noted as one of the contributing factors
to those dying in the 40-59 age group
in Fiji.
This year, one of the main focuses for
the Ministry of Health NCDs campaign
is to move away from disease focused
approach to wellness approach, Dr
Koroivueta said.
This will see change of awareness
messages advocated to people with
more emphasis on addressing risk
factors of NCDs such as quit smoking,
drink responsibility, eat balanced diet
and exercise regularly rather than
talking more about the disease itself.

$1.4M Stolen From Samoa Customs Found
Only $4,000 of $1.4million stolen
from the Ministry of Revenue has
not been recovered according to the
Police. Assistant Police Commissioner,
Leaupepe Fatu Pula said the money
was found at Fagalii-Uta on Tuesday
night.
Leaupepe said $36,000 of the stolen
money was in cash and the rest were
cheques. Police recovered only
$32,000 of the stolen cash.
The money was receipts for Monday
due to be banked Tuesday morning
when the theft was discovered.
Leaupepe said two Junior Offcers of
the Finance Department of the Ministry
are now in custody to await their court
appearances.
He said the money was found at the
home of one of the offcers at Fagalii-
uta after a whole day of investigation
by police.
These two offcers broke into the vault
where the money was and stole it when
they fnished work at around 5pm on
Monday evening, Leaupepe said.
They are charged with theft; a charge
that carries a maximum of seven years
jail time.
Police did not identify the two offcers
but said they will appear in court next
week.
Mark Kemakeza Found Guilty Over
Misuse Of Funds
A member of the Solomon Islands
Government has been found guilty of
misappropriating government funds.
The Honiara Central Magistrates
Court found Mark Kemakeza, who
represents the Nggela constituency in
Central Province, guilty of converting
government money for his own use.
The former minister for Forests,
Environment and Conservation was
refused bail and will appear in court
next Tuesday for sentencing.
If jailed for more than six months he
will lose his seat.
Honiara journalist Koroi Hawkins told
the media the court's decision will
be welcomed by many in Solomon
Islands.
"This is an encouraging case for the
fght against corruption in the Solomon
Islands, where MPs and other big
leaders in government often escape
corruption charges," Mr Hawkins said.
"So getting any conviction in terms of
offcial corruption, or conversion as is
the case in this instance, is a big win
for the fght against corruption here."

Samoan Man Charged With Illegal
Circumcisions
A 52-year-old man in Samoa has been
charged with illegally circumcising 28
boys.
The man from Sataoa village is in
police custody and is expected to
appear in court later.
His case has highlighted the issue of
circumcision of boys in the Pacifc.
Dr Kiki Maoate, a pediatric surgeon
from Christchurch Hospital told the
media that boys from the Pacifc are
still being circumcised in New Zealand.
"In the Pacifc population boys
continue to be circumcised either here
in New Zealand or they travel to the
Pacifc island countries to have their
circumcision," he said.
Dr Maoate said the practice of
circumcision changes depending on
the country.
"The systems have moved on, most
of the countries, including Samoa
and Tonga and Fiji who practice
this, the expectation is that medical
practitioners will undertake this, with
the value being placed on the child," he
said.
"I suspect what has happened here is
someone has undertaken circumcision
without those conditions and place, as
well as the things like hygiene, local
anesthetics, and all those sorts of things
that technically we should be making
sure the children receive."
Australia To Help PNG In 2012 Polls
Australia will be assisting Papua New
Guinea in the upcoming 2012 General
National Elections come June.
The election, which is tipped to be
the biggest compared to the previous
elections, has lured the support from
our friends from Down Under.
The Australian Federal Police had
also completed a new K5.6 million
(US$2.6 million) communications
network for local police to respond to
any outbreaks of trouble in the 2012
National Elections.
Australias High Commissioner to
PNG Ian Kemish said the support
package would include two Australian
helicopters commercially-leased to
PNG Defence Force to ferry local
offcials to polling booths across the
country, 30 computers to help clean
up the Electoral Roll and the injection
of senior Australians into the Electoral
Commission to act as advisers.
Kemish also said that no Australian
police would be deployed in PNG to
provide a bobby on the beat.
He said he expected the election to be
a historic sign of generation change
a shift that had also been evident in
tensions over recent months between
Prime Minister Peter ONeill and
ousted rival Sir Michael Somare.
Tonga Suspends Issuing New Gun
Licences
The police in Tonga have suspended

of armed-hold ups over the past six months.
In the most recent incidents, four armed
men held up a petrol station last month,
while police are still seeking two men
who robbed a Chinese-owned grocery

The acting Police Commissioner Siope
Soakai Motuapuaka said as part of
their response, the Police Minister
stopped issuing new gun licences until
a review of gun laws is complete.
The weapon issue is already
addressed. Unfortunately, this also
happened to people who are entitled to
have guns here in Tonga. Everything
has been stopped until there is a proper

Prominent PNG Woman And Two Nephews
Jailed For 87 Years
A prominent Madang woman leader,
her son and two nephews have been
given a total of 87-year jail sentence
for killing a man in 2009.
Katherine Mal, aged 43, and her three
young relatives were sentenced to jail
to by National Court Judge, Justice
David Cannings, after a lengthy trial.
In a 16-paged judgement, Justice David
Cannings, ruled that Mal be given 17
years, although she was not directly
involved in assaulting the deceased,
she contributed signifcantly when
she arrived at the scene and shouted
encouraging others to kill the man.
The court has conceded her degree of
involvement, as equivalent to that of her
two nephews, Lotivi and Moses Mal.
However, in handing down the sentence,
the court also considered several
mitigation factors that of her outstanding
record of community service, in
particular, her record as a woman's
leader, and the poor state of her health.
Meanwhile, her 25-year-old son,
Emmanuel Ong, will serve 30 years,
having being regarded as the principal
offender in the incident. His two
cousins, Lotivi and Moses, will serve
20 years each.

Man Admits Burning Wife Alive
Ranjeeta Sharma attempted to revoke
a protection order against her husband
three days before frefghters found
her burning body on a rural Waikato
roadside as he was preparing to fee the
country.
In the High Court at Hamilton, Diwesh
Kumar Sharma, 30, pleaded guilty to
murdering Mrs Sharma on January 20
last year.
His 28-year-old wife was still alive
when he poured an accelerant over her
and set her on fre 10km from Huntly.
The media can now reveal that Mrs
Sharma, under the surname Rekha, was
granted a protection order for herself
and her son Akash, 4, on December
15, 2010. However, at a hearing on
January 17 last year she indicated to
the Manukau District Court that she
wanted to withdraw the order.
The court confrmed Mrs Sharma
wanted to discontinue proceedings, but
said a court-appointed lawyer for Akash
had opposed her doing so. Orders
were made for fling applications and
submissions and a hearing was to be
set to determine the issues.
The order remained in place, but
before the matter could be resolved,
Mrs Sharma was dead. It is understood
the order was not the frst Mrs Sharma
had taken out against her husband.
Sharma left for Fiji the day after her
body was found, taking the couple's
son Akash, but was soon found by
Fiji police and escorted back to New
Zealand by Hamilton detectives.
A close relative of Mrs Sharma, who
did not wish to be named, said her
family had helped Mrs Sharma through
the process to obtain protection orders
as she did not know how.
Her family had tried desperately to
help her get away from her husband,
who they said was abusive, housing
her and helping her to get a job and
driver's licence.
"We were trying to create a fresh start
for her, but for some reason she kept
going back to him."
The relative said Sharma "stalked"
his wife while she was living with
her family. "My dad saw him sitting
in his car outside her work sometimes
when he went to pick her up, and my
mother remembers seeing Diwesh on
our street a few times. He was abusive,
physically and verbally.
"We suspect that Diwesh got in
contact with Ranjeeta and convinced,
or perhaps even threatened her to go
back to him - this may have happened
on several accounts when she tried to
get away from him. We also received
numerous phone calls from his parents
and other family members pressuring
us to send Ranjeeta back to him."
She said Mrs Sharma changed after she
married the man who would eventually
kill her. There was a "signifcant
difference in her personality" after she
wed.
"I remember her being bright and
happy when I was young, but when she
was staying with us in New Zealand
she seemed the opposite. She seemed
scared and insecure, it was like her
husband and his family had taken all
the life and joy from her."
She hoped Mrs Sharma's tragic and
brutal death would not be in vain, and
her story could save others.
"We would urge other women in
Ranjeeta's situation to please learn
from her ordeal. This could happen to
anyone, despite race or culture, age,
or even gender. Anyone who is in a
domestic violence situation should get
help and most importantly get out."
An agreed summary of facts was not
available after the court appearance
although it had been speculated that Mrs
Sharma's death was an "honour killing".
As Diwesh Sharma was led from court
one of Mrs Sharma's relatives shouted
at him in Hindi. Outside, she said it
was "a big relief" the family had been
spared a trial. Sharma will be sentenced
on April 3.
Diwesh Sharma, far left, is charged with the murder of his wife Rangjeeta, far right.
Lawyer Punished
For Cell Phone
Ringing In Court
A lawyer received an unusual sentence
in the Ashburton District Court.
He was ordered by Judge Joanna Maze
to provide morning or afternoon tea for
court staff after his cell phone went off
while the court was in session.
The lawyer was not in the court room
when the phone went off - it was in the
pocket of his jacket, which he'd left on
the back of a chair.
When the phone went off, Judge Maze
took an adjournment. She had already
issued a warning about turning cell
phones off in the court room after two
in the public gallery went off during
the morning session, so was less than
impressed.
When court recommenced and the
lawyer who owned the phone returned
to the court house, Judge Maze handed
down the punishment.
"I would have thought that the penance
could be paid by way of morning or
afternoon tea for the court staff," she
said.
But, she said, she would not participate
in the feast, as it would not be proper
for a judge to do so.
John Key Marks
Christchurch
Anniversary
THE earthquake that left 185
people dead in Christchurch last
year will go down in history as one
of New Zealand's darkest days,
Prime Minister John Key says.
He was in the city with fve senior
ministers, to attend services marking
the frst anniversary of the 6.3
magnitude earthquake.
"This will be a time to refect on what
has been lost," he said on Monday.
"Christchurch, and all of New Zealand,
was changed forever that day."
Mr Key says it's also a time to refect
on what has been achieved since then.
"Recovery is making good progress,
construction is under way on 26
signifcant commercial buildings," he
said.
"Work has been completed on about
80 per cent of the 1406 buildings
identifed as needing to be partially or
totally demolished."
Mr Key says that in the long term,
Christchurch is going to be a very
different city.
"It will be a vibrant, new and great
place to live."
170,000-Bra Chain A World Record For NZ
GIRL Guides in the New Zealand town of Dargaville have put "Bra-gaville" on the
map with an uplifting, record-breaking effort, stringing nearly 170,000 bras together.
The last brassiere was hooked to
its neighbour to create the chain of
169,324 supporting undergarments.
The chain, laid out in a zig-zag pattern
at the town's Memorial Park, was about
135 kilometers long and breaks the
previous world record of 166,625 bras
set in Australia three years ago.
The project was part of Girl Guides
New Zealand and the Breast Cancer
Foundation's efforts to raise awareness
about breast cancer.
It took two years to collect the bras,
which were donated from across the
country, Australia, Britain and the US.
About 100 Girl Guides took two days to
connect the bras by their hooks and eyes.
Chain instigator Robyn Martinovich
said she was happy but relieved the
project was over.
She had seen enough bras to last her a
lifetime, and so had her husband, said.
She had no idea where the suggestion of
calling Dargaville "Bra-gaville" came
from, but thought it was hilarious.
Today they had already started
dismantling the chain.
The best bras will be donated to women
in the Pacifc Islands and Africa.
Local politicians will verify the record,
the details of which will be sent to the
Guinness Book of World Records.

Max Sica Had Complex Relationship With Neelma Singh
The Defendant: Max Sica is accused of murdering the Singh
siblings.
MAX Sica allegedly strangled his girlfriend and then murdered her two younger
siblings as they were the only potential witnesses to his crime, a court heard.
The Supreme Court in Brisbane heard
Neelma Singh, 24, Kunal Singh, 18,
and Sidhi Singh, 12, were killed at their
family home at Bridgeman Downs, in
Brisbane's north, nearly nine years ago.
Prosecutor Michael Byrne told the
jury they would hear allegations about
a complicated web of relationships
involving the accused killer, Max Sica
and the Singh family.
He said after Neelma Singh and Sica
had a relationship in 2002, Neelma had
wanted to break it off.
However, in the weeks before her death
Neelma had willingly seen Sica because
she wrongly believed he had a brain
tumour and only had weeks to live.
Mr Byrne said Sica and Neelma had
a relationship which was complicated
and tumultuous.
The jury would hear there were reasons
why a physical confrontation with
Neelma Singh could have occurred but
it appeared Sica had nothing against
the two younger Singhs other than they
were potential witnesses.
Mr Byrne told the jury the case was a
"whodunit" but they should remember
Sica, did not have to prove anything as
it was up to the Crown to prove Sica's
guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
Sica, 41, pleaded not guilty to
murdering Neelma Singh, 24, Kunal
Singh, 18, and Sidhi Singh, 12, who he
allegedly killed at their family home
at Bridgeman Downs, in Brisbane's
north, on April 21, 2003.
Mr Byrne said on April 22, 2003, Sica
informed police he had found three
bodies in a spa bath in a house at
Grasstree Close, at Bridgeman Downs.
"There was no doubt the three had met
violent deaths... the Crown says they
were murdered by Max Sica," he said.
Mr Byrne said it was alleged the three
victims had been left dead for a day and
the killer had made a "distinct effort
to eradicate biological and forensic
traces"
He told the jury would hear of Sica's
behaviour after he told police he had
found the bodies.
"There was no doubt Max Sica was
distraught on that day. But the Crown
says it was nothing more nothing less
than a sham, a lie...The Crown says he
killed them and came back a day later
to discover the bodies," he said.
Mr Byrne detailed how Vijay Singh,
his wife Shirley, and their four children
moved from Fiji to Brisbane in the
1990s and lived in a house at Stafford, in
Neelma Singh, 24, Kunal Singh, 18, and Sidhi Singh, 12
Brisbane's north, beside the Sica family.
In 2002, the Singhs moved to a house at
Bridgeman Downs, in Brisbane's far north,
and one of the Singh children, Sonia, by
this time was married and left home.
Neelma Singh had travelled overseas to
Dubai in 2002 and when she returned in
May that year did not tell her family and
stayed with Sica at a unit on Bribie Island.
Mr Byrne said by mid-2002 there
was no doubt Neelma Singh was in a
relationship with Sica.
He said while Neelma Singh was in
Dubai, Sica had asked Vijay Singh if
he could marry her but an angry Vijay
Singh had said no.
He said from that point things had
became strained between Vijay Singh
and Sica.
Mr Byrne said the jury would hear Sica
was on parole and it was one of the
reasons Vijay Singh thought Sica was
not good enough for his daughter.
But he said the jury was not to take the
fact Sica was on parole into account in
any way when making its assessment
of the case.
Mr Byrne said it was likely during the
trial that the Singh family dirty laundry
would be aired but the Crown alleged
it was of limited relevance.
He said the jury would hear of
arguments between Vijay and Shirley
Singh and Sica's involvement was a on
going source of agitation.
"It was made clear Max Sica was not
welcome at the Singh home," he said,.
Mr Byrne detailed how the jury would
hear allegations of problems between
Vijay Singh and Shirley Singh.
For example he told Shirley Singh and
Neelma Singh had been in Fiji they had
discovered some evidence of Vijay's
behaviour and Neelma had rung Sica
to have her father bashed.
Mr Byrne said Sica had imposed himself
into the the arguments but by April 2003
it was clear Sica was not welcome at the
Singh home and the children were told
to call police if he turned up.
He detailed to the jury how they would
see a series of emails involving Sica
and the Singhs which could explain the
complicated relationships.
The trial before Justice John Byrne is
expected to run for fve months.

Alleged Bali Bomber 'Never
Met Bin Laden'
Suspected Indonesian bomb-maker
Umar Patek's stay in the same Pakistani
town where Osama bin Laden was later
killed in a US raid was a coincidence
and the pair never met, his lawyer said.
Patek, 45, faces six counts of murder,
bomb-making and illegal frearms
possession over the 2002 Bali nightclub
attacks, and prosecutors say they will
push for the death penalty.
In his trial at the West Jakarta court,
defence lawyers objected to the murder
charges, saying Patek was not involved
in planning the bombing that killed 202
people, including 88 Australians.
Patek, once the most wanted terror
suspect in Indonesia, had a $US1
million bounty on his head under the
US Rewards for Justice program.
He was extradited to Indonesia after
being arrested in January 2011 in the
Pakistani town of Abbottabad, where
US commandos later killed Al Qaeda
chief Osama bin Laden.
Defence lawyer Asludin Hatjani denied
Patek had gone to Pakistan to meet
with the Al Qaeda boss.
"He went to Pakistan as part of his
plans to migrate to Afghanistan, He
never had plans to meet Osama bin
Laden," he said, adding that Patek had
not met with the Saudi-born extremist.
Umar Patek was arrested in January 2011 in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad.

every day, really not," said chief
medical offcer Dr Ulssetts Berg, from
the Umea University Hospital.
"Either he has been in the car which
has been snowed over, I suppose it has
been like an igloo, which is why he has
managed to get through this cold," he
said.
"I mean, we have had down to -30
centigrade here.
"Yes, it is a strange story, very strange."
No-one is sure why the man, identifed
in the media as Peter Skyllberg,
apparently chose to stay in the car at
the end of a road leading off a major
highway, but it has certainly attracted
attention from around the world.
Bertil Wallin, who has been covering
the story for the local newspaper, said
the man had been eating snow.
"Nothing else. He had food for one day
and I think he had decided to stay with
the car for some reason that no one
knows why," he said.
"No-one has missed him. At frst I
didn't believe it myself ... he was very,
very weak when they found him."
If that is true, this is one of the great
survival stories of all time.
Wallin says there has been a large
amount of interest about the story from
across the world.
The man himself is not saying anything
publicly.
His full story of two months with
nothing but melted snow may never
be told and, if his rescuers had been
a little less curious, one of the most
remarkable stories of all time would
never have survived - and nor would
he.
during the quarrel and the young man
died on the spot," the statement said.
The investigators detained his bride
as a suspect in the murder the next
morning.
The bride is charged with murder and
faces up to 15 years in prison if found
guilty.
World's Most Expensive Cognac
To Go Under The Hammer
The world's most expensive Cognac, which accompanied Napoleon
Bonaparte on his conquests of Europe, is being put up for auction.
Dutch collector Bay Van der Bunt is
selling some 5,000 unopened bottles
of spirits worth more than 5 million
pounds, a drinks cabinet that includes
the 1795 Cognac made in Brugerolle.
Van der Bunt said the hand-blown six-
liter Jeroboam bottle worth 114,500 is
"the last of its kind in the world".
"It travelled with Napoleon's army.
You can just see it there lying with the
others in the hay cart. After the battle
and probably before the offcers
would drink from it," the Telegraph
quoted him as telling the Observer.
He bought the bottle from a Chicago
collector in 1990 for 20,000 pounds,
an investment that has increased fve-
fold in value as wealthy Chinese and
Russian buyers move into the market.
Also in the collection is a Courvoisier
and Curlier worth 39,000 pounds,
which was distilled from grapes
plucked 223 years ago in 1789, the
year of the French revolution.
Buyers solely interested in the Cognacs
of revolutionary and Napoleonic
France will be disappointed as Van
der Bunt is aiming to sell the entire
collection, which was started by his
great grandfather in 1880, to a single
buyer by the end of this year.
He is also haunted by the idea that a
buyer might open and drink his historic
brandies.
"I fear people will drink them. This will
be more than a pity. It will be barbaric.
Just barbaric," he said.
Bart Laming, the agent for the sale,
will uphold Van der Bunt's wishes by
vetting prospective buyers to ensure
collectors rather than drinkers get their
hands on the Cognacs.

3-Year-Old Boy World's First To Survive Being Born With Heart Outside Body
A boy in US, who was born with his heart outside his body, is world's frst child to survive under such circumstances.
It is an incredibly rare condition and
usually babies born that way are
stillborn or die within three days.
Ryan Marquiss' heart also hadn't
developed and so he only had half a
heart - a combination of defects, which
is so rare that he is the only one of his
kind in the world.
Doctors advised his devastated parents
to terminate the pregnancy when his
mother was just 12 weeks pregnant,
but they bravely refused.
It is a gamble that has paid off, as
Ryan is just about to celebrate his third
birthday.
"We wanted to let nature take its course,
so we refused to have the termination,"
the media quoted his 34-year-old
mother as saying.
"We knew it would be a miracle if
he survived the birth but we were
unwilling to take matters into our own
hands.
"The doctors told us that no baby with
Marquiss' combination of defects had
ever survived, so the fact that he is here
with us today, is just amazing. He really
has astounded everyone,' she said.
The incredibly rare defect, ectopia cordis,
affects only eight in every million births
and ninety percent of these are stillborn
or die within three days.
To add to that Marquiss was also
suffering from hypoplastic right heart
syndrome, where only the left side of
the heart had developed properly.
"All the odds were stacked against
him," the mum, who lives with husband
Henry, and their other children in
Pennsylvania, USA, said.
"We knew that it was a miracle that
he had been born alive with his heart
outside his body, but then to have
another life-threatening condition of
only having half a heart meant that
everything was against him surviving,"
she added.
Doctors at the Children's National
Medical Centre in Washington
delivered him at the end of February
2009 by caesarian, helped by a team of
30 medical professionals.
"If he survived the birth his exposed
heart likely would become infected and
kill him," Dr Mary Donofrio, Director
of the fetal heart programme at the
Children's National Medical Centre
said.
"Even if infection didn't happen his
heart had one working ventricle and
he would require open heart surgery to
rewire the blood fow through it.
"I told the family right from the start
that if he survived, it was a miracle,"
she said.
Marquiss had to have an operation at
just two weeks old to have a central
shunt placed in his heart to ensure
proper blood fow.
Then he underwent more than a dozen
operations over the next two years. He
had operations to replumb his heart so
that the half a heart would do the job of
a full size heart. Doctors also put tissue
expanders under his skin to produce
more skin so they could use it to cover
his exposed heart.
"He will need some sort of chest
protection operation in the future but it
may be overcome by just wearing some
sort of protective padding when he
plays sport. He won't be a competition
athlete, but we are hoping he can run
around on the playground and climb
trees like any other child," his mother
said.
Ryan's case has now been reported
in a medical journal. Doctors believe
that his survival offers hope for other
babies with serious heart defects.
Violence Against Women Now Criminal Offence In Pakistan
Pakistan's Senate on Monday passed a
bill that makes violence against women
and children an offence carrying jail
terms and fnes, state media said.
The Domestic Violence (Prevention
and Protection) Bill was introduced by
Senator Nilofar Bakhtiar and passed
unanimously by the upper house of the
federal parliament, Pakistan Television
reported.
The law was already passed
unanimously in the National Assembly,
the lower house of parliament, in
August 2009.
It will come into effect after President
Asif Ali Zardari signs it into legislation.
Those found guilty of beating women
or children will face a minimum six
months behind bars and a fne of at
least 100,000 rupees ($1,100).
Besides children and women, the bill
also provides protection to the adopted,
employed and domestic associates in a
household.
The law classifes domestic violence
as acts of physical, sexual or mental
assault, force, criminal intimidation,
harassment, hurt, confnement and
deprivation of economic or fnancial
resources.
Previously, if a man beat her wife or
children, police could not arrest him
and it was considered a domestic affair.
Human rights groups say Pakistani
women suffer severe discrimination,
domestic violence and so-called
"honour" killings - when a victim
is murdered for allegedly bringing
dishonour upon her family.
They say that women are increasingly
isolated by spreading Islamist
fundamentalism in Pakistan, where the
Taleban threaten parts of the northwest.
Spinal-Injury Patients
Can Now Operate
Computer
A wireless device helps people with severe
spinal injuries operate a computer or
move an electrically powered wheelchair
by simply by moving their tongues.
The sensors track the location of a tiny
magnet attached to the users' tongues.
In earlier versions of the tongue drive
system, the sensors were mounted on a
headset worn by the user.
"By moving the sensors inside the mouth,
we have created a tongue drive system
with increased mechanical stability and
comfort that is nearly unnoticeable," said
Maysam Ghovanloo, associate professor
of computer engineering at the Georgia
Institute of Technology, the US.
The new device contains magnetic feld
sensors mounted on its four corners
that detect movement of a tiny magnet
attached to the tongue, according to a
Georgia statement.
The tongue drive system was presented
at the Feb 19-23 IEEE International
Solid-State Circuits Conference in San
Francisco, USA.

Stop Another Family Tragedy, Sister Pleads
Christmas just wasn't the same for
Clare Smith and her family after losing
her sister in a car crash.
The Rotorua woman's sister, Paula Jessep,
died on December 22 and police have said
she was texting before her car crashed.
Mrs Smith now wants to speak out
about the dangers of texting and driving
in a bid to prevent a similar event from
happening to another family.
Ms Jessep, 37, was killed just three days
before Christmas as she was driving
home to Hamilton after attending a
funeral in Rotorua.
She crashed her car, which had three
passengers, on State Highway 1, just
north of Tirau.
At the time of the crash, Senior Sergeant
Fane Troy of the Taupo road policing
group said, investigations showed Ms
Jessep was having a text conversation
on her mobile phone when the accident
happened about 10pm.
He could not say if she was typing a
text at the time of the crash but, he said,
she had sent and received a number of
texts before the crash.
Her three female passengers _ a
24-year-old and her 19-year-old sister,
from Tokoroa, and a 20-year-old friend
- had to be cut from the extensively
damaged car by the Fire Service.
They were taken to Waikato Hospital
with serious but non-life-threatening
injuries.
Mrs Smith said the past two months had
been incredibly hard without her sister.
"Christmas just wasn't the same; you
open up presents and try to have a nice
day with the kids but it was just so hard
without her,'' she said.
"Her birthday was also just before the
New Year so that was hard as well.''
Mrs Smith said an accident like this
was something she didn't wish on
anyone.
"You usually read about these sorts of
things in the newspaper and you never
think that it would actually happen to
you.''
She said a lot of her friends and family
would have texted while driving
regularly before Ms Jessep's crash.
"I used to do it a lot and I know others who
did as well. You just don't think twice, but
now I wouldn't dream of it,'' she said.
"I can see why people still do it though.
Everyone is just so busy and you think
you can save some time by replying to
a text or calling someone while you are
in the car. Sometimes a car can be an
extension of an offce.''
Mrs Smith said she now wanted people
to think twice before they picked up
their cell phones while driving.
"It is not just yourself who you are
putting in danger but everyone around
you and your passengers,'' she said.
"Paula would hate to think that the
others in the car with her had to spend
time in hospital, she would have hated
herself for putting others in danger.''
Mrs Smith said her sister was survived
by her 16-year-old son who she
described as "amazing''.
"He has just coped with everything so
well,'' she said.
"We just want to make sure something
positive can come from this accident.''
She said she wanted to spread the
message that people can die from
texting while driving.
"I am keen to actually go into schools
and talk to kids about these dangers,''
she said.
"It is such a risk and I don't think
the younger generation realizes how
dangerous it is to text and drive.''
Bay of Plenty police road manager
Inspector Kevin Taylor recently told
the media that texting and driving had
increased in not only the Bay of Plenty, but
nationwide. "Any texting while driving is
high-risk and foolish behaviour.''
Mrs Smith said lives would be saved if
people didn't text and drive. ``If Paula
hadn't had texted while driving she
would still be here.''
Thief Left Disfgured After Urine Sets
Off Explosion At UK Power Plant
A MAN was sentenced to a year in prison for attempting to rob a UK
power substation that exploded when he urinated against a transformer.
Michael Harper, 36, was permanently
disfgured after suffering serious burns
in the blast at the electricity substation
under a railway arch in Leicester,
central England.
The father of two was left burning on
the foor by his accomplice, 50-year-
old Richard Boyce, who tried to drive
off but later was found by police with
blistered hands.
The incident last March also left 2000
homes and businesses without power
and caused 26,500 ($42,000) damage
as the two men tried to take metal from
the station last March.
Harper was jailed for a year after
pleading guilty to burglary and
criminal damage at Leicester Crown
Court, while Boyce was sentenced to
four years in jail.
Recorder Michael Stephens told Harper
that he had "suffered a punishment, it
seems to me, already" at the sentencing.
"You were seriously injured and
very nearly lost your life and will be
permanently disfgured," Stephens
said.
Prosecutor Sian Cutter said Boyce
told police the explosion happened
when Harper urinated against the
transformer. Boyd also told police the
two went to the station to take heroin,
she said.
Cutter added that the explosion set fre
to oil that Boyd, who claimed to have
knowledge as an electrician, drained
from inside the conductors to insulate
against electrical changes.
Bullies Jailed Over Classmate's Suicide
A court in South Korea has jailed two
15-year-old high school students for
bullying a fellow classmate who later
committed suicide.
The pair took turns beating their
classmate, as well as forcing his head
into a sink of water and making him eat
food from the ground.
Late last year, after months of abuse,
the victim jumped from an apartment
building to his death.
In sentencing, the judge said such
insults and harassment had destroyed
the high school student's life and
devastated his spirit, adding that
rampant school violence in South
Korea is a dire reality.
He sentenced one boy to three-and-a-
half years in jail and the other to three
years.
Rioting Prisoners Take Over Bali Prison
RIOTING prisoners have taken over the Bali prison home to Australian
inmates Schapelle Corby and the Bali Nine drug traffckers.
Authorities are struggling to
regain control at the overcrowded
Kerobokan jail after prisoners
threw stones at police and started
fires.
Prison staff abandoned the facility
under the control of more than 1000
inmates, as reported.
The riot started at about 11pm and
could be related to the stabbing of an
inmate last Sunday afternoon, which
led to three arrests.

A CASE FOR NUTS
Munching on a handful of nuts is a
favourite pastime for many people, not
really realizing their nutritional values.
Perhaps few of them are aware that nuts
possess several nutritional benefts, one
of them being protection of the heart?
That sure makes one reach for the
packet of nuts doesnt it? But read on
for there are several more to gloat on.
Nuts are a good snack item that can be
enjoyed any time of the day. Be it in the
form of nougat (chikki) or as a garnish
on a rich dessert, nuts fnd their way into
our meals and thereby into our systems
in many different ways. Unfortunately
nuts are the frst ones to be struck off
the food list of a health freak. So let us
crack open the health secrets locked in a
nut and enjoy its goodness.
The Nutritional Edge:
Proteins: With nearly 15-20% being
good quality proteins, nuts can serve to
step up the protein intake. Other protein
rich foods from non-vegetarian sources
i.e. meat and poultry come with the extra
baggage of undesirable saturated fats.
Vitamin E: is an important nutrient
to consider in order to preserve
the fexibility of the arteries. Also
considered a beauty aid, this vitamin
protects the cells of the body from
damage. Little wonder then that every
beauty cream claims to have Vitamin
E as one of its prime ingredients. And
nuts provide ample amounts of it.
Calcium: Nuts are a good source
of calcium specially almonds with a
calcium content of 230 mg per 100 gms.
Fibre: Fibre present in the nuts ensures
a low glycemic index, which means that
the blood sugar will not rise rapidly on
consuming nuts. Fibre is also known
as an excellent cholesterol buster and
regulator of good bowel movement.
Nut Oil: Research today states that
munching nuts may actually favor the
heart. The fat in nuts is monounsaturated,
a variety that is benefcial to the heart
and assists in keeping the bad cholesterol
levels in check.
Folate: Present in nuts, Folate is a
nutrient belonging to the vitamin B
group that keeps the heart healthy,
protects the body from cancer and
lowers the risk of birth defects in
newborn babies. The other B vitamins
of importance found in nuts include
Thiamine, Niacin and Ribofavin.
Selenium: Essential for a well
functioning immune system and
thyroid gland, it helps protect cells
in the body from damage. Since it is
present in nuts, go nutty.
Zinc: Boost up the bodys immunity
towards infections with zinc present in
the nuts. It also helps to heal as well as
protect the skin.
Magnesium: Essential mineral needed
for good nerve and muscle activity and
for strong bones can be traced in nuts.
But are not nuts high in calories?
The caloric content of some nuts per 15
grams (around one tablespoon) are as
follows:
Nut Calories
Almonds 98
Groundnuts 85
Walnuts 103
Cashew nuts 89
The calories present in 15 grams of nuts
are approximately equal to the energy
one would get by eating a medium sized
apple. A weight watcher need not groan
with disappointment since with proper
planning, nuts in moderate amounts
can be a part of the diet. An interesting
fnding says that inclusion of small
amounts of nuts in a healthy diet plan
would not only make it appetizing but
also see that one sticks to the diet for
a longer time! After all who can resist
such tasty tidbits in ones meals?
Nuts could be exchanged for foods
with a similar number of calories. For
example, Substitute 1 teaspoon of butter
or oil used in stir-frying vegetables
with a tablespoon of assorted chopped
nuts sprinkled over it. The only word
of caution is for people with a high
blood pressure or those who need to
lower their salt intake - stay away from
the salted nuts.
With so many benefts, nuts are truly
revitalizing.
Nuts, Beans And Seeds Can Boost Your Health
Adding nuts, beans and seeds in your diet can give you an ample amount of nutrients, say experts.
In the February 2012 issue of Food
Technology magazine, published by
the Institute of Food Technologists
(IFT), Contributing Editor Linda Milo
Ohr writes that heart health, weight
management, healthy cholesterol
levels, and cognitive health are just
some of the benefts that these foods
can offer.
Almonds are low in saturated fatty
acids, rich in unsaturated fatty acids,
and contain fber, phytosterols and
plant protein.
In a scientifc review, Berryman et
al. (2011) showed that consuming a
breakfast containing almonds aids in
stabilizing blood glucose levels for
most of the day and provides a lasting
feeling of fullness.
Pistachios are also considered a part of
a heart-healthy diet and may also lower
cholesterol. In addition some research
has shown that walnuts may have been
linked to benefts related to brain health
and cancer.
Beans, also called legumes, also play an
important role in diet. They contribute
complex carbohydrates, vitamins,
fber, minerals and antioxidants that
may help lower the odds of cognitive
defcits or the risk of Alzheimer's
disease.
Pulses like dry peas, lentils, and
chickpeas are also members of the
legume family and contain both fber,
protein, as well as seven of the eight
essential amino acids needed in the
body.
Chia seeds, sunfower seeds, and hemp
seeds also contribute a myriad of
essential minerals and amino acids to
the human diet.
Chia seeds can be mixed with liquids
to create sports drinks for athletes with
omega-3s to address infammation and
protein to help with muscle recovery.

to entertain and this could lead to a late
night. Watch your health. Emotionally,
you may be feeling a little depressed.
Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21):
Work proceeds at a brisk pace. Some
of you are likely to travel overseas on
sales promotion or for some training
programme. Business people will
sign new contracts on lucrative terms.

the grade.
Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19):
Perhaps you should handle important
work personally. Keep relationship
cordial both at home and at work. A
sudden journey is indicated. Work
proceeds smoothly. At a social get-
together you will be very much in
demand. A late night could take its toll
on your health.
Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18):
You will be shopping, going out and
meeting people. Matter concerning
children and recreation make you happy.

indicated for most of you. Outings and

Vegetable Gardening - Beans
Pole and bush beans (more commonly
called green beans) are a tender
vegetable and a great addition to any
garden, great eaten fresh off the plant
or incorporated into a recipe. Bush
beans require less maintenance, so they
are easier to grow.
Planting
Pole beans will grow in a climbing
vine and require a trellis or staking.
Bush beans will spread up to 2 feet but
do not require support.
Do not start seeds indoors; they may
not survive transplanting.
Seeds can be sown outdoors anytime
after last spring frost, minimum soil
temp is 48 degrees F. Plant 1 inch deep,
a little deeper for sandier soils. Cover
soil to warm if necessary.
Bush beans: Plant 2 inches apart.
Pole beans: Set up trellises, or "cattle
panels," and plant 3 inches apart.
If you like pole beans, an easy support
for them is a "cattle panel"a portable
section of wire fence16 feet long and
5 feet tall. The beans will climb with
ease, and you won't have to get into
contorted positions to pick them.
For a harvest that lasts all summer, sow
beans every 2 weeks. If youre going to
be away, skip a planting. Beans do not
wait for anyone.
Rotate crops each year.
Care
Mulch soil to retain moisture; make
sure that it is well-drained.
Water regularly, from start of pod to
set. Water on sunny days so foliage
will not remain soaked.
Beans require normal soil fertility.
Only fertilize where levels are low.
Begin after heavy bloom and set of
pods.
Use a light hand when applying high-
nitrogen fertilizer or you will get lush
plants and few beans.
Weed diligently and use shallow
cultivation to prevent disturbing the
root systems.
Pests
White Mold
Mosaic Viruses
Harvest/Storage
Beans are picked at an immature stage,
when the seeds inside have not yet
fully developed.
Look for frm, sizable pods and snap or
cut off the plant. Do not tear the plant.
Store beans in a moisture-proof, airtight
container in the refrigerator. Beans will
toughen over time even when stored
properly.
Beans can be kept fresh for about
4 days, or blanched and frozen
immediately after harvesting.
Beans can also be canned or pickled.

Your Career - Don't Go It Alone
The old adage that, "it's not what you
know, but who you know" often holds
true. In the case of pursuing a career,
who you know can certainly help you
get your foot in the door.
Deciding to pursue a specifc career
or personal goal is not always an easy
decision to make, which is why taking
the time to talk to someone who has
knowledge in your area of interest is
a wise frst step to pursuing a dream.
It doesn't make much sense to ask a
doctor how to pass the Bar exam, or
to talk to a zoologist about the current
state of fber optic technology.
Having a frank conversation with
someone who has exposure to a
specifc feld can provide a realistic
look at what your career path could
entail. Speaking with an expert can
provide practical advice on what kind
of training, personal characteristics
and even lifestyles are important for
someone to succeed in a given career.
Finding a Guide
The key to fnding a good guide for
your dream is relatively simple: seek out
someone with experience with the industry
and/or career choice you have selected;
make sure this person has the time, energy
and willingness to listen to your dreams;
and most importantly, make sure this
is someone that you feel comfortable
confding in. There are plenty of places
to fnd a suitable guide. They can be
found in professional societies, university
campuses, local chambers of commerce
and even online web communities. But
one of the most untapped resources for
career seekers are the recruiters who
specialize in the various careers available
to today's workforce.
Industry Insight
Why recruiters? They know what
companies are hiring, and they also
know what types of positions are in
highest demand, as well as the criteria
top employers are looking for in
employees. If you want an inside look
into any industry, a recruiter can be a
wealth of information, because they're
always interacting with both talented
professionals and companies that
are hiring. And, in today's economy,
there are specialized recruiters for just
about any profession you can think of.
Areas of expertise vary from technical
to legal felds, and there are even
recruiters who specialize in writing or
working with stagehands for theatrical
productions! With so many specialized
recruiting frms, there's bound to be
one that can offer you guidance with
your career of choice.
Some view recruiters as a means to an
end, and fnd their services necessary
only when faced with fnding a new
job. But successful professionals will
tell you that one of the best ways to
fnd new growth opportunities in your
profession is to keep in touch with one
or maybe a few recruiters who truly
understand what you do, and who you
feel comfortable confding in.
The Right Guide
A perfect example of a positive
recruiter relationship is that of an
athlete's relationship with a sports
agent. As anyone who has seen Jerry
McGuire knows, athletes rely on their
agents for much more than contract
negotiations. Sports agents offer pep
talks, negotiate endorsements, fnd out
what their peers and competitors are
doing, and basically take care of the
parts of an athlete's career that does not
pertain to winning the game.
A good recruiter is much like a good
sports agent; not only does a recruiter
fnd people jobs, but they also offer
support, help with raise and promotion
negotiations, and keep their contacts
abreast of what is going on in their
industry. And a recruiter can brag about
your accomplishments and potential in
ways that you cannot easily speak about
yourself to a prospective employer.
Whether you're looking to become
the next Kobe Bryant, or want to get
your start in computer programming,
there is a recruiter out there with the
knowledge and the willingness to help
you take the frst step towards fulflling
your dreams. It is crucial to make sure
the recruiter understands you and your
goals, and that he or she is trustworthy.
The relationship is never a successful
one if there is not trust on both sides,
or if the recruiter really doesn't have
an understanding of what it is you
want to do. Make sure you ask your
recruiter about their experience and
their background, and how long they
have worked with a particular industry.

A Day In The Life Of A Job Seeker
"Looking for a job is a full-time job."
It's a phrase we've all heard and, for the
most part, it's true. Trying to fnd a job
that you like, going on the interview,
waiting for the call back...it's all some of
the most emotionally draining and time-
consuming work you'll have to do. And
that's all before you've even been hired.
One of the most important things
one can do while hunting for a new
career opportunity is to set a schedule
and stick with it. For those who are
currently employed in a job that they
hate, it can be frustrating to go home
and then spend more time trying to fnd
a new job. It seems like all you do is go
to work and then go home to do more
work. But those without a job can fnd
it even more frustrating because the
endless amount of time waiting (and
the diminishing bank balance) can
really get to a person.
So we asked job seekers for their tips
on how they dealt with job search
and what things they did to provide
structure to their day. Here's what they
had to say:
Early bird gets the worm, Don't
waste your days sleeping. Get up early
and set 'offce' hours for yourself. By
preparing yourself as if you're going
to work, you're actually getting into a
mindset that will put you on task.
Set the scene, be sure to remove
yourself from all distractions when
doing your job search. It's one thing to
go to a coffee shop to do your research
about companies and save the job
postings, but when you start to write
your cover letters and rsums, you
should really be able to concentrate
fully on the task at hand. Don't be afraid
to write in the morning and then revise
in the afternoon, give yourself some
time to edit and craft your messages
you are sending to potential employers.
Get specifc, the scattershot method
of applying for any and everything to
either escape a bad job or fnd gainful
employment usually leaves no one feeling
good. Be specifc in what kind of job you
are looking for, what areas you want to
focus on, what skills you have and what
skills you want to further develop in a new
job. Learn about companies in your area
that feature these roles and see what other
opportunities they may have and connect
with recruiters or individual experts in the
feld through resources like LinkedIn.
Follow-up, for many job seekers,
the concern is the rsum black hole.
Because employers receive so many
applications per posting, it's good for
you to create a follow-up system and
mark a calendar so you know when to
reach out to a company you've applied
with if they haven't contact you yet.
That way you'll know where they are in
the process or if the position was flled
and you can move on.
Set output goals how many
rsums do you want to send out per
week? Make a number and stick to it but
be realistic with your life. Don't say 250
because you will only make yourself
miserable. Do something manageable
and that you can accomplish.
Practice your introduction/elevator
pitch it's always important to sell your skills
and what you're looking for in a career
opportunity in under a minute. Instead of
focusing on day-to-day abilities, think big
picture and sell your value.
Research if you spend more time
doing homework on companies you
want to work for, you'll be spending
less time applying to jobs that you
possibly don't have an interest in.
Remember that a job description is one
element to working for a company and
that you're job could be perfect, but the
overall values of the company could
be in direct opposition to your own
personal values. Get to know them
via social media and through their
corporate website.
Don't sabotage yourself , if you're
employed and wanting out, don't look
for jobs online while you're at your job.
That's asking for trouble and a pink slip
to follow. You'll have to make the time
outside of your current job to dedicate
to job search. If you're unemployed,
don't sell yourself short in a cover letter
by telling your entire story because
employers don't care. Again, sell your
value up front and then the details can
be flled in during the interview process
if needed. And be sure that if you are
unemployed and searching for jobs,
your family respects your time to do so.
Utilize every tool - Use all the
assets at your disposal job boards,
social media, recruiters, aggregators,
etc. Diversifying your method of
search with produce diverse results
in the types and number of jobs you
fnd. Think outside of your traditional
search methods and challenge yourself
to fnd new and unique ways to connect
with employers or other job seekers.
Keep your humour fnding a job
is tireless and can be truly depressing.
But don't let it get the best of you.
Remember that you're more than a
job and a career and while everyone
does want to be a productive member
of society, your job isn't the only way
to do so. Get out and see family and
friends, try to stay active and implement
exercise and healthy eating habits, keep
your frustration and negativity to a
minimum (especially in social media).
By keeping a positive attitude, you're
able to broach the sensitive topic easier
with others who are employed and it's
a reminder that you are in need of work
and their help if possible.
More importantly, every job seeker
just needs to defne their process for
themselves. Not every person will want
or need to do the same thing, based on
their personal situation. The fact of the
matter is that there is no 'right' way to
search for a job, but without structure it
can certainly feel endless and hopeless.
Just remember that it doesn't have to.
You're in control of your own career.

Teething, the emergence of the frst
teeth through a baby's gums, can be a
frustrating time for little ones and their
parents. It helps to know what to expect
when your child is teething and how to
make the process a little less painful.
The Teething Process
Teething can begin as early as 3
months and continue until a child's
third birthday.
Between the ages of 4 and 7 months,
you'll notice your baby's frst tooth
pushing through the gum line. The
frst teeth to appear usually are the
two bottom front teeth, also known as
the central incisors. These are usually
followed 4 to 8 weeks later by the four
front upper teeth (central and lateral
incisors). About a month later, the lower
lateral incisors (the two teeth fanking
the bottom front teeth) will appear.
Next to break through the gum line are
the frst molars (the back teeth used for
grinding food), then fnally the eyeteeth (the
pointy teeth in the upper jaw). Most kids
have all 20 of their primary teeth by their
third birthday. (If your child experiences
signifcant delay, speak to your doctor.)
In some rare cases, kids are born with
one or two teeth or have a tooth emerge
within the frst few weeks of life. Unless
the teeth interfere with feeding or are
loose enough to pose a choking risk, this
is usually not a cause for concern.
As kids begin teething, they might
drool more and want to chew on things.
For some babies, teething is painless.
Others may experience brief periods of
irritability, and some may seem cranky
for weeks, with crying jags and disrupted
sleeping and eating patterns. Teething
can be uncomfortable, but if your baby
seems very irritable, talk to your doctor.
Although tender and swollen gums could
cause your baby's temperature to be a little
higher than normal, teething doesn't usually
cause high fever or diarrhea. If your baby
does develop a fever during the teething
phase, it's probably due to something else
and you should contact your doctor.
Easing Teething
Here are some tips to keep in mind
when your baby is teething:
Wipe your baby's face often with
a cloth to remove the drool and
prevent rashes from developing.
Give your baby something to chew
on. Make sure it's big enough so
that it can't be swallowed and that it
can't break into small pieces. A wet
washcloth placed in the freezer for
30 minutes makes a handy teething
aid just be sure to wash it after
each use. Rubber teething rings
are also good, but avoid ones with
liquid inside because they may
break or leak. If you use a teething
ring, be sure to take it out of the
freezer before it becomes rock hard
you don't want to bruise those
already swollen gums!
Rub your baby's gums with a clean
fnger.
Never tie a teething ring around a
baby's neck - it could get caught on
something and strangle the baby.
If your baby seems irritable,
acetaminophen may help - but always
consult your doctor frst. Never place an
aspirin against the tooth, and don't rub
alcohol on your baby's gums.
Baby Teeth Hygiene
The care and cleaning of your baby's
teeth is important for long-term dental
health. Even though the frst set of teeth
will fall out, tooth decay can hasten
this process and leave gaps before the
permanent teeth are ready to come in.
The remaining primary teeth may then
crowd together to attempt to fll in the
gaps, which may cause the permanent
teeth to come in crooked and out of place.
Daily dental care should begin even
before your baby's frst tooth emerges.
Wipe your baby's gums daily with a clean,
damp washcloth or gauze, or brush them
gently with a soft, infant-sized toothbrush
and water (no toothpaste!). As soon as the
frst tooth appears, brush it with water.
Toothpaste is OK to use once a child
is old enough to spit it out - usually
around age 3. Choose one with fuoride
and use only a pea-sized amount or
less in younger kids. Don't let your
child swallow the toothpaste or eat it
out of the tube because an overdose of
fuoride can be harmful to kids.
By the time all your baby's teeth are
in, try to brush them at least twice a
day and especially after meals. It's also
important to get kids used to fossing
early on. A good time to start fossing
is when two teeth start to touch. Talk
to your dentist for advice on fossing
those tiny teeth. You can also get
toddlers interested in the routine by
letting them watch and imitate you as
you brush and foss.
Another important tip for preventing
tooth decay: Don't let your baby fall
asleep with a bottle. The milk or juice
can pool in a baby's mouth and cause
tooth decay and plaque.
The Story of Cinderella
There was once a rich man, whose
wife died, leaving him with one little
girl. After some years, hoping to give
his child a mother's love and care,
he married again, this time a widow,
with two grown-up daughters. But his
second wife was haughty and proud,
and her two daughters were even worse
than their mother; and the poor little girl
had a very unhappy time with her new
relations. Her stepsisters were jealous
of her, for she was very beautiful, and
they themselves were plain and ugly.
They did all they could to make her
miserable; and, at length, through their
wicked spite and envy, her life became
a burden to her. The poor child was
sent to live in the kitchen, where she
had to do all the rough and dirty work;
and because she was always dressed in
rags, and sat beside the cinders in the
grate, they called her Cinderella.
It happened that the King of the country
had an only son. He was very anxious
that the Prince should be married; so
he gave a great ball, and invited all the
grand ladies in the country to come to
it. It was to be a very splendid affair,
lasting for three nights, and people
were very eager to be invited to it, for
it was known that the Prince would
choose his bride from among the ladies
present.
Cinderella's sisters received invitations;
and from the day they arrived they
talked of nothing but of what they
should wear, for each of them secretly
hoped that she would be chosen as the
Prince's bride.
When the great day came at last, they
began to dress for the ball directly
after breakfast. Cinderella had to help
them; and they kept her busy all day
doing their hair, and running messages,
and helping them to lace up their fne
dresses.
When Cinderella saw their beautiful
clothes she wished that she could go to
the ball as well; but when she timidly
asked if she might, they laughed in
mocking scorn.
"You go to the ball!" they cried. "What
would you do at the ball, with your
rags and tatters and your dirty face?
No, no, Cinderella, go back to your
seat amongst the ashesthat is the
place for a little kitchen girl like you!"
So the two sisters and their mother
drove away in a carriage and pair to
the King's palace, and Cinderella was
left behind. She sat down on the hearth
before the kitchen fre and began to cry
softly to herself, because she felt so
very lonely and miserable.
As she sat there in the dusk, with the
frelight dancing over her, and her face
buried in her hands, she heard a voice
calling:
"Cinderella, Cinderella!" and with a
start she looked up to see who it could
be.
There on the hearth in front of her
stood an old woman, leaning upon a
stick. She was dressed in a long red
cloak, and she wore high-heeled shoes
and a tall black hat.
Where she had come from Cinderella
could not imagine. She certainly had
not come in through the door, nor yet
through the window for both was shut.
Cinderella was so surprised to see her
that she stopped crying, and stared at
her in astonishment.
"What are you crying for?" asked the
old woman.
"Because my mother and sisters have
gone to the ball, and I am left here all
alone," said Cinderella.
"Do you want to go to the ball, too!"
said the old lady.
"Yes, but it is no good; I have nothing
but rags to wear," sobbed poor
Cinderella.
"Well, well, be a good child and don't
cry anymore," said the old woman,
briskly. "I am your Fairy Godmother,
and if you do what I tell you, perhaps
you shall go after all. Run out into the
garden and bring me in a pumpkin!"
Cinderella ran out into the garden and
brought in the biggest pumpkin that
she could fnd.

February Is Heart Month
Tips for Avoiding Heart Disease
Simple Steps to Lower Cholesterol
Has your doctor said you have high
cholesterol? Then you know you need
to change your diet and lifestyle to
lower cholesterol and your risk of heart
disease. Even if your doctor prescribed
a cholesterol drug to bring levels down,
you'll still need to change your diet and
become more active for cardiovascular
health. These simple tips can help you
keep cholesterol levels in check.
Cholesterol, Good and Bad
Your body needs a small amount of
cholesterol to function properly. But
we may get too much saturated fat and
cholesterol in our diet -- and both raise
levels of LDL "bad" cholesterol. LDL
cholesterol can cause plaque to build
up in arteries, leading to heart disease.
HDL "good" cholesterol, on the other
hand, helps clear bad cholesterol from
your blood. You want to lower LDL
cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol,
starting with your diet.
Portion Control: Lend a Hand
Most of us eat super-sized meals,
with portions that are twice the size
recommended for good health. That
can contribute to weight gain and
high cholesterol. Here's an easy way
to practice portion control for a meal:
Use your hand. One serving of meat
or fsh is about what fts in the palm of
your hand. One serving of fresh fruit
is about the size of your fst. And a
serving of cooked vegetables, rice, or
pasta should ft in your cupped hand.
Serve Up the Heart-Healthy Food
Load your plate with fruits and
vegetables -- fve to nine servings a day
-- to help lower LDL "bad" cholesterol.
Antioxidants in these foods may
provide the beneft. Or it may be that
when we eat more fruits and veggies,
we eat less fatty foods. Either way,
you'll also help lower blood pressure
and maintain a healthy weight. Foods
enriched with plant sterols, such as
some margarine spreads, yogurts, and
other foods, can also help lower LDL
cholesterol.
For Heart Health, Look to the Sea
A heart-healthy diet has fsh on the
menu twice a week. Why? Fish is low
in saturated fat and high in healthy
omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty
acids help lower levels of trigylcerides,
a type of fat in the blood. They may
also help lower cholesterol, slowing
the growth of plaque in arteries. Go
for fatty fsh, such as salmon, tuna,
trout, and sardines. Just don't drop the
flets in the deep fryer -- you'll lose the
health benefts.
Start Your Day With Whole Grains
A bowl of oatmeal or whole-grain
cereal has benefts that last all day.
The fber and complex carbohydrates
in whole grains help you feel fuller
for longer, so you'll be less tempted
to overeat at lunch. They also help
reduce LDL "bad" cholesterol and can
be an important part of your weight
loss strategy. Other examples of whole
grains include wild rice, popcorn,
brown rice, barley, and whole-wheat
four.
Go Nuts for Cardiovascular Health
Need a snack? A handful of nuts is a tasty
treat that helps in lowering cholesterol.
Nuts are high in monounsaturated fat,
which lowers LDL "bad" cholesterol
while leaving HDL "good" cholesterol
intact. Several studies show that people
who eat about an ounce of nuts a day
have lower risk of heart disease. Nuts
are high in fat and calories, so only eat
a handful. And make sure they're not
covered in sugar or chocolate.
Unsaturated Fats Protect the Heart
We all need a little fat in our diet -- about
25% to 35% of our daily calories. But
the type of fat matters. Unsaturated fats
-- like those found in canola, olive, and
saffower oils -- help lower LDL "bad"
cholesterol levels and may help raise
HDL "good" cholesterol. Saturated fats
-- like those found in butter and palm oil
-- and trans fats raise LDL cholesterol.
Even good fats have calories, so eat in
moderation.
More Beans, Fewer Potatoes
You need carbohydrates for energy, but
some do your body more good than
others. Whole grains, such as brown
rice or quinoa, whole-wheat pasta,
and beans have more fber and raise
sugar levels less. These help lower
cholesterol and keep you feeling full
longer. Other carbs, like those found
in white bread, white potatoes, white
rice, and pastries, boost blood sugar
levels more quickly, leading you to feel
hungry sooner, and may increase risk
for overeating.
Move It!
Even 30 minutes of physical activity
fve days a week (20 minutes three
times a week for vigorous exercise,
such as jogging) can help lower LDL
cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol
-- although more exercise is even
better. It also helps you maintain an
ideal weight, reducing your chance of
developing clogged arteries. You don't
have to exercise for 30 minutes straight
-- you can break it up into 10-minute
increments.
Walk It Off
If you're not used to exercising -- or
hate the thought of going to a gym --
just go for a walk. It's easy, healthy,
and all you need is a good pair of
shoes. Aerobic or cardiovascular
exercise such as walking lowers risk
of stroke and heart disease, helps you
lose weight, and keeps bones strong. If
you're just starting out, try a 10-minute
walk and gradually build up from there.
Work Out Without Going to
the Gym
If exercise sounds like a dirty word to
you, here's some good news: You can
boost your heart health by incorporating
physical activity into your day. Any
kind of cardiovascular activity counts
-- gardening, dancing, or taking the
stairs instead of the elevator. Even
housework can qualify as exercise -- as
long as you're doing serious cleaning
that gets your heart rate up and not just
light dusting.
Take Charge of Your Health
If you have high cholesterol, you and
your doctor may be using a number of
strategies to lower cholesterol levels.
You may be working on your diet,
losing weight, exercising more, and
maybe taking cholesterol drugs. There
are other actions you can take, too, to
make sure you stay on the right track.
What to Do When Eating Out
If you're eating healthy food at home to
keep cholesterol in check, don't blow it
when you eat out. Restaurant food can
be loaded with saturated fat, calories,
and sodium. Even healthy choices may
come in super-size portions. Try these
tips to stay on track:
-Choose broiled, baked, steamed, and
grilled foods -- not fried.
-Get sauces on the side.
Look for Hidden Traps
A close look at nutrition labels is
essential for a low-cholesterol, heart-
healthy diet. Try these tips:
-Check serving sizes. The nutrition info
may look good, but does the package
contain two servings instead of one?
-If it says "whole grain," read the
ingredients. Whole wheat or whole
grain should be the frst one.
Don't Stress Out
Chronic stress can raise blood
pressure, adding to your risk of
atherosclerosis, which occurs when
plaque from cholesterol builds up in
arteries. And research shows that for
some people, stress might directly
increase cholesterol levels. Reduce
your stress levels with relaxation
exercises, meditation, or biofeedback.
Focus on your breathing and take deep,
refreshing breaths. It's a simple stress-
buster you can do anywhere.
When Losing Means Winning
Losing weight is one of the best things
you can do to fght cardiovascular
disease. Being obese increases the
risk of high cholesterol, high blood
pressure, and type 2 diabetes. These
all affect the lining of your arteries,
making them more prone to collect
plaque from cholesterol. Losing weight
-- especially belly fat, which is linked
to hardening of the arteries -- helps
raise HDL "good" cholesterol and
reduce LDL "bad" cholesterol.
Follow Your Doctor's Advice
Managing your cholesterol is a lifelong
process. See your doctor regularly to
keep tabs on your health. Follow your
doctor's recommendations on diet,
exercise, and medication. Working
together, you and your doctor can
lower your cholesterol levels and keep
your heart going strong.

India Call Centres 'Used In US
Debt Collection Fraud'
Indian call centres were used to swindle
millions of dollars out of Americans,
say US federal offcials.
Callers from the Indian centres posed
as "phantom debt" collectors who
targeted people who had applied for
small online loans.
The Federal Trade Commission said two-
California based frms and their owner
had made $5m (3.2m) from the fraud.
FTC offcials said this was the frst case
of its kind as more than 10,000 people
across the country were cheated.
"We think we have a really serious
problem," said C Steven Baker, director
of the Federal Trade Commission's
Midwest Region, in Chicago.
"As economies have globalised, so has
fraud." Payday loans
A US court has frozen the assets of
California-based frms American
Credit Crunchers LLC, Ebeeze LLC
and their owner, Varang K Thaker.
They have been charged with violating
the FTC Act and the Fair Debt
Collection Practices Act, though no
criminal charges have been fled.
Mr Thaker allegedly withdrew
thousands of dollars that had been
paid into the companies' accounts by
victims of the fraud.
Mr Baker said it was not clear if the
operation was directed from California
or India.
He said authorities had received more
than 4,000 complaints about debt-
collection schemes in recent years.
The callers used personal data on their
victims obtained from payday loan
websites - which usually extend small,
short-term loans at high interest rates
to borrowers.
More than 20 million calls may have been
made over the past two years, Mr Baker
said, with collectors using aggressive and
threatening language to demand payment
for debts that did not exist.
"Nobody actually owed them a dime,"
Mr Baker said.
David Vladeck, director of the FTC's
consumer protection bureau, said:
"Consumers should not be pressured
into paying debt they don't remember
owing. Legitimate debt collectors
must provide consumers with both
written information about the debt, and
instructions for protecting themselves
if they don't think they owe the debt."
Man Stays In Motel With
Girlfriend's Corpse For Two Days
A US man has been charged with concealing the death of his
girlfriend after he continued to stay in an Illinois motel room with
her corpse for two days after she died.
Derek Tanke, 47, of Joliet, Ill., used the
woman's debit card to buy vodka and
withdraw cash to extend his stay in the
room before notifying authorities of
her death, the media reported.
Tanke and his girlfriend, 54-year-old
Nancy A. Johnston, had both been
staying at a motel in Joliet, Illinois,
authorities said.
Police said Johnston had numerous
medical problems and her death was
not a homicide.
Tanke initially told police she died
Friday after he called 911 at 10:58am
local time and requested an ambulance.
But authorities said the motel room had
a signifcant odour of decomposition
and Tanke later admitted Johnston had
died two days ago.
Tanke appeared in Will County Court
Saturday where he faced charges of
concealment of a death, unlawful use
of a credit card and ID theft. His bail
was set at $75,000.
Barack Obama Seeks To Change
US Corporate Tax Code
US President Barack Obama is
proposing cutting the US corporate
tax rate from 35% to 28%, and closing
loopholes, as part of a larger push for
tax reform.
Announcing the plan, the US treasury
secretary called the tax code loopholes
"fundamentally unfair".
Republicans also propose lowering
rates, but Mr Obama's plan is thought
to have few chances of becoming law.
Correspondents say the president is
using the plan to spark a debate on tax
reform in an election year.
The plan does not include any overhaul
of the individual tax code.
"Our current corporate tax system is
outdated, unfair, and ineffcient," Mr
Obama said in a statement.
"It is unnecessarily complicated and
forces America's small businesses to
spend countless hours and dollars fling
their taxes."
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner
also called the current system
ineffcient, describing it as bad for job-
creation.
He said the White House and Treasury
plan would make the tax system more
globally competitive and eliminate
"fundamentally unfair" loopholes.
"We want to restore a system in which
American businesses succeed or fail
based on the products they make and
the services they provide, not on the
creativity of their tax engineers or the
lobbyists they hire."
Loophole tax rate
The US currently has one of the top
corporate tax rates in the world, but
loopholes and other subsidies mean
many companies pay a much lower
effective tax rate.
According to the Congressional
Budget Offce, total corporate federal
taxes represented 12.1% of US profts
in 2011.
Republican Representative Dave Camp
and presidential hopeful Mitt Romney
have proposed a 25% rate, while other
Republican candidates have suggested
rates as low as 12.5%.
While both parties have expressed
interest in removing tax loopholes,
there is disagreement on which
subsidies will be needed to be cut in
order to make up for revenues lost
through lowering the standard rate.
Removing the tax loopholes would
be likely to raise tax revenues overall,
with some companies paying more or
less under the current system.
As part of the proposed plan, Mr Obama
has suggested lowering the tax rate to
25% for manufacturing businesses and
continuing research and development-
based tax credits.
While the announcement feshes out
promises made in Mr Obama's January
State of the Union address, it leaves
certain key details, like the percentage
of a minimum tax on foreign profts, up
to Congress.
Correspondents say that the tax proposal
- and the deliberate lack of detail in
some areas - is a move by Mr Obama to
shift responsibility to Congress.
Republicans in the House of
Representatives have routinely
opposed Mr Obama's legislative plans
since winning control of the chamber
in the 2010 elections.

Salman Khan And His Leading Ladies
The evergreen campaigner with
mesmerizing eyes might have come
of age. But there is little to deny his
boyish charm and youthful grace
sweeping you, me and all. The
seasoned campaigner with biceps to
boot struck his root in the alleys of
flmdom way back in the nineties. With
history relating the rest of his tale, it
will be interesting tracing some of his
leading on screen ladies - the on screen
partners of the boyish stalwart - one
and only Salman Khan.
1.Bhagyashree
The doe eyed seductress of the fragile
make as one of Sallus screen partners
might have spearheaded his successful
foray into the glitters of flmdom. In
spite, of rave reviews and crowns of
success, the startling partnership began
and ended with Maine Pyar Kiya.
2. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
The evergreen bachelor and the
Bachchan Bahu were destined to blaze
celluloid and the world beyond it as
well. But then, sad turn of events and
misfortune pitched in with its precious
bit to separate the duo professionally
as well as personally. They worked
together in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
3. Sushmita Sen
While it was an amorous partnership
with the glamorous Miss World- Aish;
Salmans vibe with the Miss Universe
Sush was one of friendship and trust.
The duo gelled brilliantly on the
screen level as well-stealing the show
in Maine Pyar Kyu Kiya of David
Dhawan.
4. Rani Mukherjee
The Bong beauty with chubby looks
also happened to be one of Salmans
on screen campaigner scintillating all
and sundry in Chori Chori Chupke
Chupke.
5. Madhuri Dixit Nene
The ravishing beauty boasting of smile
worth a million and more successfully
gelled with Sallu miyan- getting to
offer a blockbuster performance in
Hum Apke Hai Kaun- one of the
phenomenal family entertainers from
the tinsel savvy Barjatyas.
6. Priyanka Chopra
With rumor mill having much to
circulate about the so called love &
hate partnership of Salman & Priyanka;
the duo had a gelling chemistry to offer
in God Tussi Great Ho
7. Preity Zinta
The dimpled darling Preity Zinta
was also one of his leading on screen
partners in Chori Chori Chupke
Chupke, doing one another justice
with the mutual interplay of energy,
vibrancy and chirpiness. Another
movie worth watching is Dil Ne Jise
Apna Kahaa.
8. Kareena Kapoor
The scintillatingly charismatic Bebo
had a vibrant chemistry to share as
well with the Hindi flms proverbial
bad boy worked in Bodyguard.
9. Katrina Kaif
Glimpse into Salmans journey will be
seemingly incomplete without a word
or two of one of his leading ladies & ex
fame- the dashingly sensuous Katrina
Kaif. Having stolen much of the show
as a popular screen pair, the duo doesnt
mind complementing one another yet
again. They starred in Partner, Yuvraaj
& Ek Tha Tiger.

Tusshar Kapoor Imitates Dads
Dance Steps In Chaar Din...
Many actors, including Shah Rukh
Khan, have aped Jeetendra`s signature
dance steps. Now Tusshar Kapoor will
be seen copying his dad`s dancing style
in his forthcoming flm Chaar Din Ki
Chandni, though Tusshar confesses he
was nervous about it.
I was a bit nervous because I would
do it in my style, as to get his style was
a bit tough. But then I thought forget
how he used to do it, and danced in my
style. I was sure that I had to put in a lot
of energy because he always invested a
lot of energy, the 35-year-old said at
a promotional event held for the flm.
Even now, if I am performing and he
is sitting and watching me, I get a little
embarrassed, wondering what he is
thinking of my performance, he added.
Critics and audiences may pan
Tusshar`s flm, but the actor says his
father never made negative comments
about his movies.
He likes everything about my flms.
He does not dislike anything about them
because he is a father, said Tusshar.
The young Kapoor has teamed up with
Kulraj Randhawa of Yamla Pagla
Deewana fame in Chaar Din Ki
Chandni that hits theatres on March 9.
He is very excited about this flm
because he likes the energy and it`s his
type of flm full of family drama and
entertainment. I am sure he will like
it, but he is not a critic. He will never
make any negative comment about
my flms, he added. Last seen in his
sister`s production venture The Dirty
Picture, Tusshar is currently working
in Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum and

Salman Khan To Replace Amitabh
Bachchan In A Hollywood Film?
If there is one voice in B-Town that
can make even a silly dialogue sound
super, then it is that of actor Amitabh
Bachchan. The superstar has on more
than one occasion, played the narrator
or sutradhars role in many flms.
Hence when makers of Hollywood
flm John Carter approached Big B
for the sutradhars role for the Hindi
version, he was apparently game. But
his health condition has now left him
with no choice but to back out.
An industry insider says, The makers
were extremely keen to getBachchan
on board as the narrator for the Hindi
version. He had accepted the offer too,
but unfortunately the sudden dip in
his health condition just left everyone
stumped. However, BigB being a
thorough professional, apparently
asked the makers to not delay their
work because of his ill-health. He
suggested they go ahead with some one
else for the narrators voice over, as the
flm releases soon.
And if those close to the flm are to
be believed, then actor Salman Khan
will don the hat of the sutradhar for
the flm. Usually actor Shah Rukh
Khan was regarded as the next best
ft to Amitabh Bachchan, in terms of
voiceovers. However, now Salman is
being approached for the part in John
Carter. The actor however isnt been
able to seal the deal as he is currently
in Cuba, shooting for Ek Tha Tiger and
things will be clear once he is back to
the city, end of this month, adds the
source.
If industrywallahs are to be believed,
then its Salmans series of blockbusters
at the box offce that have made him
the Messiah. Be it an action flm
like Wanted or a mad comedy like
Ready, Salman can make anything
work with his sheer screen presence.
And currently he is at the top, so if the
makers are trying to rope him for doing
the narrators voice over, it is not really
a surprise. Also since Salman has good
base in his voice, he will also suit the
part, say insiders.
Salman Khan To Play Villain In
'Dhoom 4'
It is highly speculated that the
forthcoming villain of Dhoom 4
will be Salman Khan. Salman who is
working in Yash Raj Ek Tha Tiger has
developed a good working relationship
with the banner and Aditya Chopra
has hinted on the possibility of roping
Salman Khan in the much high octane
action fick.
In Dhoom, John Abraham played
baddie, in Dhoom 3, Dhoom 2,
Hrithik Roshan enacted the role, Aamir
Khan has been roped to play villain in
Dhoom 3 and now Salman Khan was
decided to sign for Dhoom 4 to play
baddie. Yash Raj has not stopped their
planning here. They have even planned
to sign Shah Rukh Khan for Dhoom
5.
Yash Raj has narrated the script to the
Dabangg star and he is highly pleased
with the script,
A source said, Salman Khan wanted
to work in a stylish action flm. And
Adi had discussed the possibility of
Dhoom 4 with him. Salman had
agreed. That`s how they ended up
working on Ek Tha Tiger. The script of
Dhoom 4 is already locked. The fnal
draft is in process.
Its all the three ruling Khans of
Bollywood to say Dhoom Machade.
Indira Gandhi Biopic On Vidya
Balans Wish List
Vidya Balan came out of her comfort
zone and delivered a blockbuster like
The Dirty Picture. And now the
actress is keen to do a flm on extra
marital affairs or a biopic on late Prime
Minister Indira Gandhi.
Talking about her choice of scripts, she
said: Action is not something I would
want to do. I want to do a nice Arth
kind of a flm on extra marital affair
which these days we often get to hear
or maybe a biopic on Indira Gandhi.
Post the success of The Dirty Picture,
every director is keen to work with
Vidya, but when asked which director
she would want to work with, she said:
I want to work with Gulzar.
If Gulzar is known for penning
melodious lyrics like Mera rang lai
lay to peppy Hinglish song Kajra re,
he is equally known for his directorial
skills which he showed with flms like
Parichay, Angoor, Maachis and
Hu Tu Tu.
Vidya is happy with her Bollywood
projects and does not want to get into
Southern flms.
In south, they dont write many roles
for actresses. I am happy here, the
33-year-old said.

Farah Khan &MalaikaAurora Khan
Amid high drama, Bollywood actor
Saif Ali Khan was arrested Wednesday
evening with two others for assaulting
an NRI businessman. All three were
later released on bail after being
interrogated, police said.
Police detained Saif and his friends
Bilal Amrohi and actress Amrita
Aroras husband Shakeel Ladak at the
Marine Drive police station, and later
brought them to the Colaba police
station. The interrogation of the trio
about the incident early Wednesday
at the Taj Mahal Hotel in which Saif
is accused of assaulting South African
NRI businessman Iqbal Sharma
lasted one hour.
They were formally arrested and
then given bail on personal bonds of
Rs.3,000 each.
According to sources, Shakeel Ladak
is said to have hit Sharmas father-in-
law in the scuffe.
Shakeel and Bilals lawyer Mahesh
Vaswani said: Iqbal and his group of
people were passing comments on the
girls (who were part of Saifs group),
and that started the incident.
On his part, Saif said he had only
defended himself after being
assaulted.
There was an ugly incident last night
(Tuesday) where my friends and the
ladies with us were abused and I was
assaulted. I was hit and I defended
myself, Saif said in a statement.
I have been to the police station to
answer the requirements of law as I am
a law abiding citizen. I have also fled
a complaint about what happened last
night and I am confdent justice will be
done, he added.
A battery of top police offcers were
waiting for the actor at the Colaba
police station, besides the media and
scores of fans.
Saif Ali Khan Arrested For Assault, Released On Bail
In the afternoon, police sent a team to
Saifs house and after failing to locate
him there, had ordered him to appear
before them as early as possible.
Saif was virtually declared wanted
when he went incommunicado after
assaulting Sharma, who is also the
director general and CEO of the Trade,
Industry & Investments of South
Africa.
The actor has been charged under
various sections of the Indian Penal
Code for allegedly assaulting Sharma
in the Taj Mahal Hotel around 1 a.m.
Wednesday morning. Police said a case
of assault had been registered at the
Colaba police station.
Sharma told TimesNow television
that Saif called him an idiot for
complaining about the actors loud
conduct at a restaurant in the Taj Mahal
Hotel.
He said he and his family had requested
the restaurant manager to ask Saif and
his friends, which included Kareena,
Amrita Arora and Malaika Arora Khan,
to keep their voices down.
Sharma said he and his family decided
to move to another part of the restaurant
downstairs.
As we were going down the stairs,
Saif was coming up, probably from the
toilet. As he passed me, he called me
an idiot and asked Do you know who
I am?
Sharma said the actor frst pushed him
and then assaulted his father-in-law
who fell on the stairs and bruised his
jaw.
It was an uncivilized way to behave
in a public space, Sharma said, adding
that he intended to pursue the matter
legally.
A police offcer confrmed that Sharma
and his guests had objected to the noise
created by Saif and his friends.

At The Movies
The Vow (G) * * *

Love Hurts!
Just in time for Valentines Day comes
the release of The Vow, the latest
three hanky romantic tearjerker from
Columbia Pictures now creating moist
eyes at the Esplanade 6,Empire Studio
12, Colossus and Cineplex Odeon
Theatres around B.C.
Love comes and goes and
continues to confound generations.
Told in a fashback style of sorts,
The Vow reveals the hardships of
regaining passion. More importantly,
this flm tactfully explores young love
and the pain and sorrow of serious
health issues that sooner or later enter
everyones life. For two young adults,
however, a freak accident turns their
lives into an obvious tailspin with truly
unpredictable results.
Lost in love and in a complete
tizzy is causal dude Leo. Teen
heartthrob Channing Tatum continues
to mug his way through romantic
tete a tetes as this average guy who
becomes smitten by Paige. Sultry
Canadian Rachel McAdams delves into
the complex role of Paige, a poor little
rich girl coddled by her upscale parents,
Rita and Bill Thornton. Casting counts
a lot and both Sam Neill and Jessica
Lange are outstanding as the social
climbing elders who arent exactly
enamoured with Paiges decisions in
life not the least of which is hooking
up with blue collar working stiff Leo.
Whatever love this pair had
for one another becomes unraveled
when Paige becomes ill and loses her
memory. Imagine the angst Leo goes
through when he discovers that Paige
no longer knows hes her husband. All
the rest of The Vow smartly chronicles
Leos plight to work his way back into
Paiges life. Along the way loads of
secrets emerge which has audiences
wondering just what will happen
between this dynamic duo.
As a team and couple Tatum
and McAdams are perfect. Tatum
offers that solemn Ive lost it all persona
and largely mugs his way pining
through most of this 104 minute movie.
Contrast his gloomy outlook on life with
a radiating McAdams who has never
looked better. Put her face on screen
and it literally glows with warmth.
Lots of issues surface in The Vow and
director Michael Sucsy delivers the
goods in this sophisticated soap opera
that also features a nice turn from Scott
Speedman as a man from Paiges past.
Obviously targeted towards
women, The Vow nonetheless is a well-
made romantic triumph whose theme
of live life to the fullest and second
chance comebacks works fawlessly.
Men will also like this movie if they
have warm hearts.

as now Frost is a dedicated traitor to
the cause or thats what the powers
that be at Langley would like you to
believe. Box offce champion Denzel
Washington has never looked better as
the dapper killer who gets trapped when
he turns himself in. Good thing for
Frost that his new captor is somewhat
inexperienced in housing detainees.
Vancouver acting sensation
Ryan Reynolds continues to add to
his resume as the rookie custodian at
a C.I.A. hideout in scenic Cape Town,
South Africa. Reynolds plays Matt
Weston, a slightly bored but eager to
please agent just waiting for something
to happen. Little does he know the
trouble hes signed up for when Frost,
considered one of the C.I.A.s most
wanted former agents gets relocated
to this out of the way supposedly secure
holding cell.
Political junkees who keep
track of world events will know that
American intelligence agencies use
special prison like settings to hold
and interrogate suspected terrorists - in
real life. During Safe House we see the
ins and outs of such a boarding home
and the ramifcations for all concerned.
Action-packed and mostly
plausible, Safe House is a cracker jack
action fick thats smart and engaging
throughout. Both Washington and
Reynolds are superb in the captor/
captive roles and the stunts and
complexities are well worth taking
in. For 115 minutes you dont know
whats going to happen next though the
chief villain may be telegraphed way
too soon. Lots of fsticuffs, chases and
a battle of wills helps make this Daniel
Espinosa directed movie a crowd-
pleaser.

India's Kingfsher Airlines Cuts
More Flights
Thousands of airline passengers in India
have had their travel plans disrupted
after cash-strapped Kingfsher Airlines
again cancelled fights.
The airline cut 16 fights on Monday
from Mumbai and several more from
New Delhi, on top of scrapping more
than 30 fights the previous day.
Indian aviation authorities have
summoned the company's chief
executive to explain why so many
fights have been cancelled.
Kingfsher, which announced a third
quarter loss of $US88 million last
week, has been beset with diffculties
caused by soaring fuel costs and high
local sales taxes, as well as a domestic
price war.
At the weekend, the airline blamed
some of the disruptions on bird strikes.
It said a full daily schedule of 240
fights should return to operation over
this week.
Flight cancellations have hit passenger
confdence hard and left stranded
travellers fuming against the airline.
"At the airport I was told my fight is
delayed and there is no clue when it
will fy," Amit Vij told the reporter at
Mumbai airport as he tried to return to
the northern city Chandigarh.
"They did not call, SMS or email me
in advance. Even the help lines are not
responding."
The Bangalore-based airline has never
posted a net proft since it started
operating in 2005.
It has seen its passenger market share
slump to 12 per cent in recent months,
with its ranking on the list of India's
largest airlines falling from second to
ffth.
Punjab's Doaba Region Witnesses
Rise In Deported Person
The Doaba region of Punjab, known
for the high rate of migration to foreign
countries, is witnessing a rise in number
of people being deported after falling
victim to illegal racketeers who promise
high paying jobs at foreign shores.
Nearly 45 per cent of the total number
of Punjabis who go abroad in search of
better jobs are from this region, which is
often called the "NRI belt" of the state.
Lured by touts with promises of
lucrative jobs abroad, youths from the
area, who resort to illegal means to go
to foreign countries or overstay their
visa period, are forced to return.
"Nearly 40 people are coming to this
area every day from different countries.
Last year, about 16,477 people were
deported," Parneet Singh, the region's
passport offcial said.
The last year's fgures include people
who had return to India to escape the
unrest in Libya, Singh said, adding,
the passports of some of these people
were retained by their employers and
they had to come back with the help of
emergency slips.
Over the last fve years, about 70,500
people have been deported, he
said, adding the fgures have seen a
signifcant rise during this period.
The fnancial downturn and tightening
of visa norms in most countries could
have been the reasons for this, he said.
Airport Metro Begins
International Check-In
International fiers can now board
Delhi's showcase Airport Metro
Express 'baggage-less' from when the
much talked about check-in facility for
fights abroad at its stations kicked off
on Thursday.
Coinciding with the frst anniversary of
its operation, the Reliance Infrastructure-
led consortium made this facility
available at its New Delhi and Shivaji
stadium stations from February 23.
While national carrier Air India began
check-in of passengers' baggage from
Thursday, private carriers Jet and
Kingfsher will follow suit.
The facility will allow fiers to check-
in their baggage before boarding the
Airport Metro Express to reach the
new swanky Terminal-3 of the Indra
Gandhi International Airport. They
will be given the boarding pass at the
station itself.
The luggage will then be transferred to
the train, which has a dedicated space,
and directly boarded to the respective
aircraft through a conveyor.
"Passengers have to check-in minimum
two and half hours prior to their fight
time. Fliers can check-in and collect
their boarding passes maximum eight
hours prior to their fight time," a
Reliance Infra spokesman said.
Check-in facility for domestic fiers
has been in operation for the past few
months on the Airport Metro and the
launching of check-in for international
fiers has been long overdue.
The 23-km high-speed corridor that
allows passengers to reach Airport
from Connaught Place in fat 18
minutes currently has a ridership of
20,000 commuters.
The 6 hours early check-in facility will
give commuters enough time to explore
the retail outlets that Reliance Metro is
coming up with, the spokesperson said.

Bindapur in South-West Delhi, police
raided the area. On seeing the police
team, the criminals fred at them but
police overpowered them.

Experts Warn Of Record Gas
Prices Across North America
Drivers across North America are
paying more to fll their gas tanks as
analysts warn of record fuel-price
increases this spring.
The price of oil reached a nine-month
high Tuesday, closing at more than
$106 a barrel.
At the pumps, that translated to an
average fuel price of $1.24 a litre in
Canada on Tuesday, according to gas
price tracking website GasBuddy.com.
At this time last year, the average price
was $1.13 a litre.
Gas prices in Vancouver could reach
$1.50 a litre this summer, experts say.
The average price of gas in the city has
already gone up more than six cents
this week to $1.34 a litre.
In the U.S., average gas prices are
expected to hit $1.12 a litre by April
-- a record for that time of the year.
California has been one of the hardest
hit states so far, where some drivers
expressed their anger by throwing pop
cans at changing fuel price signs.
Prices are fuctuating due to increased
demand for oil around the world
and instability in some regions. Iran
recently threatened to withhold its
oil deliveries as the U.S. and Europe
tighten economic sanctions against the
oil-rich country over suspicions it's
attempting to build a nuclear bomb.
Iran has already stopped oil shipments
to Britain and France. It's a largely
symbolic move because Britain hasn't
purchased oil from Iran for over a year
and France only buys a small amount.
A recent cold snap in Europe and heavy
demand from developing nations is
also affecting oil prices.
But analysts warn than even small
threats to the oil supply can disrupt the
market. For example, a fre at a Seattle
refnery spiked fuel prices overnight
last Friday.
Compounding the problem is the fact
that refneries suspend operations every
spring to switch the type of gasoline
they make. Supplies of wintertime
gas are sold off before March, when
refneries start making summertime
gas, which contains less butane and
other compounds that contribute to
smog.
The period during this production
switch can mean less supply for gas
stations, resulting in higher gas prices.
The only thing drivers on a budget can
do is limit their travel and wait for the
prices to drop. But analysts say it's hard
to predict when relief will come.
Pregnant Chinese Women
Conning Immigration System
The government plans to crack down
on a scam in which pregnant Chinese
women are coming to Canada for the
sole purpose of giving birth so the
child becomes a citizen, QMI Agency
has learned.
The fraud is mostly based in Hong Kong
where unscrupulous consultants are
coaching wealthy Chinese mainlanders
how to keep their pregnancies hidden
entering Canada on student or visitor
visas.
Avoid any baby or maternity items in
luggage, wear dark clothing going through
customs to look slimmer, and arrive in
Canada no later than in the seventh month
of pregnancy are among the tips given.
Once here, the women go into hiding
until they are due to give birth and then
go to a hospital to deliver the baby. No
one knows the extent of the abuse.
All babies born in Canada are
considered citizens - meaning they
could return later in life as a student,
for example, and sponsor their parents
under family reunifcation.
It is illegal under Canadian immigration
laws to lie about the purpose of one's
visit. A woman would be denied entry
if she told an immigration offcer the
reason for the trip is to have a baby.
Unlike Canada and the United States,
Australia, Britain, South Africa, New
Zealand and many European countries
have rules in place where citizenship is
not automatically granted to foreigners
who give birth there.
Offcials in Immigration Minister
Jason Kenney's offce said changes are
coming to strengthen laws.
"We are aware of crooked consultants
who encourage pregnant women to
illegally travel to Canada to give
birth and gain access to Canada's
considerable benefts," said Candice
Malcolm, a spokeswoman for Kenney.
"We condemn the practice of
circumventing our laws to game the
system."
Changes being considered include
making pregnancy exams a condition
of obtaining visas and rewriting rules
so automatic citizenship does not come
with birth on Canadian soil.
Majority Of Canadians Plan To
Work Past 66: Survey
Most Canadians expect to work
beyond the age of 66, according to a
new survey from Sun Life Financial
released Wednesday.
Sun Life Financial's fourth annual
Unretirement Index found that only
three in 10 Canadians plan to be fully
retired at the age of 66, and nearly half
of those surveyed (48%) plan to phase
in their retirement by working part-
time or freelance.
"Canadian retirement expectations are
changing with many planning to work
longer and almost half of Canadians
looking to phase in their retirement,"
said Kevin Dougherty, president of
Sun Life Financial Canada. "These
results are not surprising given the
current economic volatility, increasing
consumer debt loads, rising health care
costs, longer life expectancy and lack
of planning. We're also fnding that
some Canadians believe they'll have to
work longer to be able to pay for basic
living expenses."
Of those who said they plan to phase
in retirement, 43% said they expect to
start the process between the ages of
60 and 65, 21% said they plan to start
between the ages of 50 and 59 and
8% said they plan to start the process
between the ages of 66 and 70.
Among the 70% of respondents who
said they don't expect to be fully
retired at 66, 20% said they expect to
be working full-time, and 34% said
they expect to be working part-time.
Fourteen per cent of respondents said
they hadn't thought that far ahead, and
2% said they thought they'd be dead.
The poll results were released as the
federal government faces criticism
from opposition MPs over possible
changes to the Old Age Security system
to account for the country's rising
average life expectancy, a projected
smaller tax base and large numbers of
retiring boomers.
Sun Life's retirement survey was done
between Nov. 29 and Dec. 12. Online
interviews were conducted with 3,701
working Canadians between the ages
of 30 to 65. A survey of this size with
a 100% response rate would have
a margin of error of 1.6 percentage
points.
Changes Would Take Away
Automatic Citizenship
Immigration Minister Jason Kenney
says the government is considering
citizenship law changes to prevent so-
called anchor babies from automatically
becoming citizens.
Kenney says his department is not
sure how widespread the problem is of
foreign women duping the system by
coming to Canada on tourist and visitor
visas for the sole purpose of having a
child.
"This is not a new phenomena. We have
been aware of this happening for some
time," Kennedy said in Vancouver
where he announced changes to
speed up the recognition of foreign
credentials.
"In fact ... hospital administrators in
Montreal have raised the problem
with me ...in that they have seen a
growing number of people ostensibly
as visitors giving birth to children and
immediately leaving without paying
their hospital bill."
Kenney was reacting to reports in
Canada and Asia that pregnant Chinese
women are coming to Canada to have a
baby so the child is a citizen.
The Chinese fraud is mostly
based in Hong Kong where bogus
immigration agents are coaching
wealthy mainlanders how to keep their
pregnancies hidden while entering
Canada.
All babies born in Canada are
considered citizens - meaning they
could return later in life as students,
for example, and sponsor their parents
under family reunifcation applications.
Many other countries do not grant
automatic citizenship to babies born to
foreigners.
Kenney could not say if the problem
is widespread outside the Chinese
community.
"We don't want people to get the
idea that citizenship is a way to get a
passport of convenience, that Canada
is a country to be exploited," he said.
Opposition politicians said any changes
being considered should be brought
before Parliament, and not left for the
minister to arbitrarily implement as he
has done in the past.
"Allow politicians from all political
parties to weigh in on the issue as
opposed to 'Gee whiz, I hear about this,
I want to glorify the issue and I want to
talk tough,"' said Liberal immigration
critic Kevin Lamoureux.
Kenney's offcials say the matter
will be brought before the Commons
citizenship and immigration committee
before changes are made.

Firefghters Battle Blaze At
Tandoori King
Flames started tearing through the roof
of the Tandoori King on Fraser Street
near 64th Ave just before 6 p.m. No
one was hurt and there is no word on
the cause.
The blaze left the owner at a loss for
words. Manny Kooner said his family
started the restaurant almost 25 years
ago. He said it's diffcult to think about
the next step.
"I don't even know where to start, after
this is all over," he said. "I kind of
see my childhood burning down right
now."
Kooner calls the situation heartbreaking.
"I was nine years old when they started
the business, and I've always had my
hand in it somehow. I'm 32 now, and
it's still a part of me."
Kooner says one of his employees
spotted fames on the roof, while
taking out the garbage around 5:30. He
says everyone got out of the restaurant
safely, and offces on the upper foors
were also evacuated.
The next challenge Kooner faces
is fnding out what's left inside, a
proposition he calls 'scary'.
Fire crews initially attacked the fre
from inside the building, but had to
retreat outside for safety purposes,
fghting the fre in a defensive mode.
Conspiracy To Kill Boss Gets
Jail Time
A Surrey woman has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in
jail for conspiring to have her former boss killed.
Amarjit Lally, 47, was charged in April
2010 with counseling to commit an
indictable offence for trying to arrange
a hit on Gurcharan Singh Brar, her
boss at the furniture store where she
worked. Lally pleaded guilty to the
charge, though the murder was never
carried out.
She was sentenced on Monday by
Surrey Provincial Court.
During the trial, the court heard Lally
had borrowed money from Brar and
she was afraid he'd tell her husband
about the loan. Defence lawyer Russ
Chamberlain claimed her husband was
an alcoholic who abused her mentally
and physically and that her home life
would get worse if he was told about
the debt.
It was revealed Lally had met with
two undercover police offcers who
she thought were contract killers and
arranged to run drugs across the U.S.
border in exchange for Brar's murder.
Lally admitted last month she had met
with the men in a grocery store parking
lot on Scott Road, but claimed she did
not hire them.
"I said to them, I did not want them to
do anything, but if anything changed,
I'd call them," Lally testifed through
an interpreter.
Chamberlain painted Lally as a
desperate victim, incapable of sound
judgment. He argued the mother of
two teens shouldn't spend any time
behind bars and suggested two years
house arrest followed by three years
probation.
Crown prosecutors argued Lally should
spend at least fve years in prison as
she was planning to have someone
murdered.
Lally's sentence also includes a lifetime
frearms ban.
She was also initially charged with
arranging to have her mother-in-law
killed, but that charge was stayed.
Extra Taxpayer Cash Goes To
Province Via Rate Hikes: Critics
ICBC rates have already risen; Hydro rates expected to go up in April
Your morning commute is costing you
more because of the recent ICBC rate
increase and soon you'll be paying
more for Hydro, as rates are set to rise.
This is all happening at the same time
the province takes billions of dollars
from both Crown corporations to
bolster its coffers.
Critics say all of this extra capital
going to Victoria is at the expense of
taxpayers.
"I think we're being shafted!" says
one man. "It's under-handed shafting.
They make it sound like it's not coming
directly from us, but where's the money
coming from?"
The reporter spoke to another man
who disagrees, saying the money has
to come from somewhere.
"It goes both ways; without money,
government can't run all of the projects
we need. We don't want to pay a
higher rate. But at the same time, we
have to support it just to run all of the
programs," he argues.
He adds the government has to do what
it can to get out of the red.
ICBC rates went up by 11 per cent this
month. Your BC Hydro bill is expected
to rise by seven per cent in April.
Firearms Seized At Border
The Canada Border Services Agency
(CBSA) seized a large cache of frearms
and weapons on Tuesday at the Coutts
border crossing in southern Alberta.
CBSA offcers seized 75 frearms,
including 48 handguns, one blowgun,
one pistol crossbow and 12 high
capacity magazines.
The border agency says four of the
handguns were loaded and that this
is the largest handgun seizure in the
history of the port of Coutts.
The seizure happened on February 21,
2012, when a Florida resident arrived
at the port of Coutts, on his way to
Alaska.
The man said he did not have any
frearms when CBSA offcers inquired.
The offcers did a secondary
examination of the man's vehicle and
found the guns and accessories hidden
inside his pickup truck.
"This seizure demonstrates the
commitment CBSA offcers have in
making sure our borders aren't used for
illegal activity," said Lauren D. Delgaty,
Regional Director General, CBSA
Prairie Region. "Our frearms laws are
clear and these enforcement actions
help keep Canada's communities safe
and secure."
George Foster, 54, was arrested and
turned over to the RCMP.
Foster is facing ten charges, but may
have additional charges added as the
investigation progresses.
Foster will appear in court in Lethbridge
on February 23.

2012 Hyundai Genesis
The refreshed 2012 Hyundai Genesis,
including a new 429-horsepower
5.0-liter R-Spec model, debuted at the
2011 Chicago Auto Show.
All three variants in the 2012 Genesis
lineup now get an eight-speed
automatic transmission, an upgrade
over the old six-speed transmissions
offered in the 2011 Genesis.
The 2012 Genesis goes on sale in April.
The refreshed 2012 Hyundai Genesis,
including a new 429-horsepower
5.0-liter R-Spec model, debuted on
Wednesday at the 2011 Chicago
Auto Show. Although pricing was
not announced on the R-Spec model,
expect it to be the most expensive
Genesis ever, priced between $45,000
and $50,000, Hyundai told Inside Line.
The R-Spec is proving to be a study
in how Hyundai continues its upward
creep into the luxury segment, in terms
of pricing, hardware and horsepower.
In comparison, the top-of-the-line 2011
Genesis 4.6 model starts at $43,800,
including shipping. The R-Spec churns
out 44 more hp than the 4.6-liter V8 in
the 2011 Genesis.
"No pricing yet, but (R-Spec) will
be between $45,000 and $50,000,"
said James P. Trainor, Hyundai Motor
America spokesman in a phone
conversation with Inside Line.
The 2012 Genesis goes on sale in April.
The top-of-the-line 5.0-liter R-Spec
gets a new 5.0-liter direct-injection V8
engine, which the automaker describes
as the "most powerful Hyundai engine
ever." Hyundai said it is targeting the
Lexus GS 460, the Infniti M56 and
the Mercedes-Benz E550 with the
R-Spec. Other details on the R-Spec
include unique 19-inch alloy wheels
with premium machined fnish, dark
chrome headlamp inserts, and unique
R-Spec sport transmission, suspension
and steering calibrations.
The R-Spec will be offered in three
"sport-oriented exterior colors," said
Hyundai. They include Black Noir,
Titanium Gray and Platinum Metallic.
The cabin gets outftted in black leather
with a black leather steering wheel.
Although the EPA has yet to rate the
2012 Genesis, Hyundai said the fuel
economy in the R-Spec model will
"nearly match" that of the 2011 Genesis
4.6. That version of the Genesis
delivers 17 mpg in city driving and 26
mpg on the highway.
The base 3.8-liter V6 in the 2012
Genesis gets a 15 percent improvement
in output from 290 hp to 333. The
4.6-liter V8 in the 2012 Genesis is
carried over from the 2011 model.
All three variants in the 2012 Genesis
lineup get an eight-speed automatic
transmission an upgrade from the
two different six-speed transmissions
offered in the 2011 Genesis.
The Genesis gets a modest face-lift for
the 2012 model year. Changes include
what Hyundai calls a "more aggressive
front fascia," redesigned headlights
with LED accents, redesigned taillights,
and brushed aluminum fnish on the
side window surrounds. All models
now get daytime running lights.
The Genesis 3.8 Premium package
will offer new power-folding side
mirrors and heated rear seats, as well
as a rearview camera, DVD navigation
system with 7-inch touchscreen, XM
NavTraffc and 18-inch Hyper Silver
split-spoke alloy wheels.
A formal pricing announcement will be
made closer to launch.
Inside Line says: Hyundai makes further
inroads into the luxury segment with
the redesigned Genesis, with an eye
toward high-performance afcionados
and those with deep pockets
New Study Reminds Us That Buckling Up Helps
Prevent Lives From Needlessly Being Lost
This weeks study from B.C. Coroners
Service serves as a strong reminder to
us all about the importance of wearing
a seatbelt.
On average, 1,200 injuries and 90
fatalities are observed by police
every year in B.C. where a driver or
passenger was not properly restrained.
This represents 30 per cent of all
drivers and passengers killed on B.C.
roads every year.*
We can all do our part to help prevent
such tragedies it takes two simple
things: buckle up every time you get
into a vehicle and make sure others
do too, said ICBCs Fiona Temple,
director of road safety.
Remember that by wearing your
seatbelt, youre also helping to keep
your passengers safer if youre
involved in a crash without your seatbelt
on, you could strike other occupants,
the interior of the vehicle or be ejected
from the vehicle, said Temple. As a
driver, youre also required by law to
make sure that passengers under 16
years old are properly restrained.
Here are some important facts you
should know about seatbelts:
No. 1 Best protection. Seatbelts continue
to be the single most effective protective
device in your vehicle. An unbuckled 68 kg
(150 lbs) adult involved in a 50 km/h frontal
crash with a stationary object will strike
other occupants, the interior of the vehicle
or be ejected with the equivalent force of
a 3.5 ton truck. If you are ejected, you are
25 times morelikely to be killed or injured.
Even in vehicles equipped with airbags,
seatbelts are still a necessity. Airbags were
designed to work in conjunction with
seatbelts, not replace them.
No. 2 Take notice. Even drivers who
are buckled up have fve times the risk
of dying in a crash if their rear seat
passengers are not wearing seatbelts,
according to a Japanese research paper.
Always remind those in the vehicle to
buckle up it could save your life. Eighty
per cent of the deaths from these types of
crashes could have been eliminated if the
rear seat passengers had been buckled up.
No. 3 Keep kids safe. A correctly
used child seat reduces the risk of being
killed in a crash by 71 per cent and the
risk of serious injury by 67 per cent.
In B.C., all children over 18kg (40lbs.)
must be in booster seats until they are
1.45 metres (49) tall or age nine. Be a
role model for your children by always
wearing your seatbelt and reminding
older children to buckle up every time
they get into a vehicle.
No. 4 Never double buckle. Always
use a seatbelt for its intended use never
restrain multiple passengers with one
belt. The force of a crash will throw both
passengers violently together as their
bodies attempt to occupy the same space.
No. 5 Lock it up. All unrestrained
objects pets included are a hazard
in the event of a crash. If you need
to transport your pet, use an animal
carrier and if possible, restrain the
carrier. Never leave unrestrained
objects in your vehicle as they can
become projectiles in a crash.
The fne for not wearing a seatbelt is $167.
To learn how to properly wear a
seatbelt, watch ICBCs video tip here.

2010 data. A restraint includes a seatbelt,

Fiji To Meet Scotland In
HK 7S Opener

its quest for supremacy in the IRB
World Sevens series when they take
on Scotland in their Pool C opener
at 9-06pm (Fiji Time) on March
23 at the So Kon Po Government
Stadium.
The national side lost its lead in the
IRB series standings when they failed
in Wellington and in Las Vegas.
Fiji sits on second spot with 87 points.
New Zealand leads the series on 92.

7s, the sixth of the tournaments in the

with the fnal to be played on March 25.
Fiji faces France on Day 2 at 5-32pm
before meeting Australia in their fnal
pool encounter at 10-46pm.
Fiji 7s head coach Alifereti Dere and

August Deadline For Football League
A TIGHT schedule for the 2012 Fiji
Sun/GP Batteries National League has
been released giving the district less
than three months before the start of the
new domestic season aligned to FIFA
and Oceania Football Confederation in
November.
The 2012 NFL is set to kick off next
weekend and is scheduled to be
completed in August. Last year OFC
requested all island nations to set its
domestic schedule from November to
April in line with other confederations
under FIFA.
At its annual congress in October, Fiji
FA passed the decision to change the
dates for its domestic season. Fiji FA
vice-president Sheik Ibrahim said the
changes would come into effect this
November. He said the NFL would be
played from November to April.
"The 2012 NFL will end in August,"
Ibrahim said.
"Thereafter we will start the 2012-
2013 NFL. This is like the O-League,
English Premier League and the other
domestic competitions around the
world. The 2012 NFL will have no
bearing on the qualifcation for the
2012/2013 O League. This is because
Ba has already secured Fiji's spot after
winning the 2011 NFL. From 2013
onwards OFC has decided to hold the
O League in June and July period. So
the NFL winner will be at its peak to
compete in the regional competition."
The offcial opening ceremony of the
2012 NFL will be held prior to the Nadi
versus Rewa fxture at Prince Charles
Park on March 4.
Ibrahim said they expected to complete
the competition on time. "Though the
fxtures have been released, we will be
looking to slot in some more mid-week
games," Ibrahim said.
"The mid-week matches will target the
zonal teams. We should not have any
problems with Labasa and Savusavu
as they will be playing two matches on
the weekends occasionally." The fnal
round of the 2012 NFL is scheduled for
August 26-27.
Vancouver Whitecaps Sign
Middlesborough Barry Robson
Midfelder won't suit up in MLS until completion of English League
Championship
The Vancouver Whitecaps has signed
Scottish international midfelder Barry
Robson. The 33-year-old is slated to join
the Whitecaps in July after completing
his season with English League
Championship side Middlesborough.
The club is attempting to gain promotion
back to the English Premier League.
Robson has appeared 16 times for his
country since debuting in a 1-0 friendly
win at home to South Africa in 2007.
His Scottish caps include the qualifying
campaigns for the 2010 World Cup and
Euro 2012.
Robson has scored eight goals in 26
appearances for Middlesborough this
season.
"I am very excited to be joining
Whitecaps FC and to continue my
career in Major League Soccer,"
Robson said Thursday in the release. "I
am impressed by the quality of MLS
and Vancouver as a club."
Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie said
Robson is a proven playmaker.
"He is a versatile box-to-box midfelder
that can play in several positions, with
the ability to create and score goals,"
said Rennie. "Barry will be a great
addition to our squad."
Also a native of Scotland, Rennie
has identifed midfeld as a point of
weakness with the team in 2011, when
it fnished last with just six wins.
Robson has also played for Scottish
Premier League sides Glasgow Celtic
and Dundee United. Pay $20,000 Or No Release, Smith
Told
Lanky Suva midfelder Apisai Smith
will need to pay $20,000 if he is to get
his release.
This was confrmed yesterday by
Suva Football Association president
Mahendra Prasad.
Smith had wanted his release as he
intended to play for Rewa this season.
Prasad said Smith had applied for his
release right on the last day of the
transfer request.
But he said, the Suva FA had already
worked out what Smith needed to pay
before he was given his release letter.
He needs to pay for what is in his
contract, Prasad said.
We paid Lautoka $10,000 to get him
and he hasnt fnished his two-year
contract with us.
Prasad said breaching the contract
means that Smith has to pay them
another $10,000.
This means that Smith owes $20,000
to Suva FA.
Prasad reiterated that until Smith paid
up then Suva FA would release him.
He also confirmed that Smith and
Archie Watkins were the only
Suva players who applied for their
releases.
We need Apisai Smith to pay us the
money if he wants his release. With the
amount of players we have releasing
him wouldnt be a problem.

CBC / NHLPA Poll Picks Canucks As Most Overrated Team In The NHL.
Hockey Night in Canada released
the results of a survey conducted in
conjunction with the NHLPA. Among
other things, here were some of the
more, um, interesting? Results:
Pavel Datsyuk will never have a
problem getting a kidney. He cleaned
up in several categories, including
toughest to stop, hardest to play
against, and player with the trickiest
vowel in his name.
Milan Lucic was named as the
NHLs toughest player by 99% of the
respondents. .01% of the respondents
called him a smelly jerk It was
written in crayon, and smelled of
leather and hot wing sauce.
Almost half the players gave
Edmontons Rexall place the nod for
having the best ice in the league. Most
chose Edmonton because it always
seemed like the ice was tipped in their
direction when they were in town.
Oh, and the Vancouver Canucks were
named the most overrated team with
nearly one in four players choosing
the defending Western Conference
Champions. The Canucks got 24% of
the vote, with Toronto second at 18%
and Washington third at 15%.
Well, what else is new? It seems that
the Canucks have become public
enemy number one in the eyes of the
rest of the NHL. Whether its the most
arrogant team, the dirtiest team or now,
the most overrated team, the Canucks
are keeping a lot of teams up at night.
But then I wondered:
Hey, what kind of poll was this?
How was it conducted?
Who asked the questions?
Why did Lori from, The Walking Dead
try to exchange insurance with the
zombie she hit with her car this Sunday? I
mean, theres no way that guys covered.
Anyways, Ive gotten my hands on the
original question asked by the NHLPA/
CBC players poll, and well, Im not
saying its biased, but um, you be the
judge.
What team would you consider to be
the most overrated in the NHL? Is it
Vancouver? Its probably Vancouver. I
mean, were not trying to lead you or
anything, but you know they have that
Kesler guy, and well, you just know
hes a dick.
Oh, and what about those two guys that
look alike? You know, the twins?
Whats that all about? Back to back Art
Ross trophies? Big deal. Hey, I bet you
could do that, right? Right? You just
have to apply yourself.
Still unsure? Well just think about this,
the Canucks still dont have a Stanley
Cup, and Im pretty sure you do.
No? Conference championship? No?
Divisional banner? No? Ah, well dont
worry about it, Im sure things will turn
around. I mean, its not like youve
picked in the top 5 the last 5 years in
a row? What? Oh, you did? Um, well,
you know what? Youre due.
Ready to pick Vancouver? No? Not
yet? Well what about those dirty players
they have? Yeah, just think about that.
If you dont pick the Canucks, you
know theyd pick you.
You know what, leave it blank and
well just fll in Vancouver.

Evans Says Jones Is "Fake"
The rivalry between Jon Jones and
Rashad Evans has only just begun to
intensify.
While making an appearance on the
sports talk-show "Sportsnite," the two
light heavyweights didn't hold back
from hiding their true feelings towards
one another, especially Evans.
"I don't respect Jon as a person," Evans
said. "I think Jon is fake and Jon is fake
just by sitting here and saying this is
not going to be personal."
The bitter rivals had a fallout last year
and have since traded words back-and-
forth.
Jones and Evans were expected to
meet on two separate occasions, before
injuries to both men prevented a
potential bout from occurring.
But with both competitors seemingly
healthy and prepared for an anticipated
grudge match, they will fnally meet
inside the Octagon on April 21st.
Evans will look to end Jones' title reign,
as well as snap the 24-year-old's six-
fght winning streak, which includes
victories over Ryan Bader, Mauricio
"Shogun" Rua and Lyoto Machida.
UFC 145 is scheduled for April 21st,
live from the Phillips Arena in Atlanta,
Georgia.
