DISCOVERY COLLEGE PROMOTES DIPLOMA PROGRAMME SCHOLARSHIPS FOR HONG KONG STUDENTS

Discovery Bay, Hong Kong, 2 November, 2011 Discovery College is launching a campaign to promote its Scholarship Programme to students entering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in the 2012-2013 academic year. Established in 2008, Discovery College opened in Discovery Bay as a through-train school with classes ranging from Year 1 to Year 8. Each year since the College has grown by one year level to culminate in the commencement of the Diploma Programme in 2012 for students graduating onto higher education in 2014.

Discovery College has the great fortune of being able to offer Hong Kong students the opportunity to attend the College with a full or partial scholarship, says Mark Beach, Principal of the College. We are eager to attract a strong group of academic achievers looking to head to top Hong Kong and overseas universities who would benefit from and excel in our Diploma Programme.

The Diploma Programme at DC is a self-contained, two-year course which provides the best possible preparation for further study, says Diploma Coordinator, Brian McCann. We are offering a full range of subjects to maximise student choice and cater for a wide variety of interests and talents.

Discovery College believes in the development of the student as a whole person, intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially, so that when they leave the College, they are ready for active world citizenship. The College aims to equip students for future decision-making roles by presenting them with a rigorous educational programme to develop their talents and skills. At the same time, DC strives to nurture in students an understanding of themselves and others in a world of cultural diversity that will lead to a sense of tolerance, interdependence and open-mindedness. The IB Diploma Programme matches well with the overall aims of the culminating phase of our educational programme and the college aims to uphold rigorous standards of learning and enquiry within an academic framework that is both deep and broad, says Principal Beach

In addition to the financial benefits of a scholarship the College has an international group of experienced teachers, state-ofthe-art facilities and access to many resources for students aspiring to attend overseas colleges and universities.

Achievement in the Diploma Programme at Discovery College will be excellent preparation for entering universities abroad, says Paula Myers, DCs Higher Education Counsellor. The IB curriculum offered within this exceptional learning environment

will allow our students to become competitive university applicants. Paula has a strong background in university admissions and has linked DC into her established networks in the admissions community and is using her expertise to guide students and families through the university search and application process.

Academic scholarships are open to students who show a range of advanced analytical, critical and creative thinking skills essential to achieving success in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. Scholarship candidates should show evidence of participation in rigorous learning and enrichment experiences both within and beyond the classroom.

Since scholarship students have many opportunities to represent the school and act as ambassadors to the wider community, Discovery College looks for globally minded candidates who are able to make sound decisions and solve complex problems with integrity, honesty and a sense of fairness. Candidates should be able to approach unfamiliar situations without anxiety, show sensitivity towards the needs of others and respect the views, values and traditions of other individuals and cultures. Above all, DC Scholarship students should be able to give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and development.

Applications are being accepted from students across Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories for consideration for entry into the Discovery College Diploma Programme for the 2012-2013 academic year.
