Introduction: Computer ribbon is a narrow woollen fabric (tape) of varying width, made of cotton, silk or nylon and has the highest thread count of any fabric in general use. The origin and growth of this ribbon industry has been closely interlinked with the typewriter industry. In the early stages long ribbons of cotton, coated with carbon black were used, but later these were replaced by ribbons of silk, coated with colour pigments. These ribbons can be classified in the two types viz. single coloured and bicojbured. Single coloured ribbons are blue black in colour, while the bicoloured ribbons are combinations of blue-red and black-red. The fabric used for the production of ribbons should be closely woollen and control more thread counts than in ordinary cloth. Uses & Applications: Computer ribbons find extensive application in computer printers. Market Survey: The computer industry in our country made spectacular progress in the 1980s and has become a part and parcel of our life. Inspite of this dramatic increase in production and utilization of computers and their peripherals, this industry offers a vast scope for increasing prodviction so as to meet the domestic demand fully and also to earn valuable foreign exchange through exports. The new policy announced by Government of India recently is very encouraging and provides great opportunity for the new entrepreneurs. But the entrepreneurs will have to provide quality product at competitive prices. Competition from imports would be there and entrepreneurs will have to plan accordingly. Secondly the market at present is concentrated in major cities, though it is likely to grow fast in semiurban areas in coming years. Thirdly the technology is likely to change very rapidly and entrepreneurs will have to be dynamic so as to accommodate the new technologies and satisfy the growing demand. Formulations of Inks

Raw Materials Required: The chief raw materials needed are coating ink and base material. Cloth is the chief base material and it includes cotton, nylon, silk etc. Coating ink is made from a mixture of pigments and soluble dye stuffs, waxes, oils and solvents. The common pigments are Carbon black, Oran blue and Antimanicol cinnabar. The dyestuffs include black, violet, basic dyestuffs. organic red, methyl violet victorious blue bases etc. Different types of waxes and vaseline are used as vehicles for pigments and dyestuffs. Oils are intended for producing proper softness and compactness in the ink. Oil like castor oil, linseed oil, sesame oil etc. are commonly used in the industry. Stearic acid, acetic acid and aliphatic acids can also be used as solvents for dyestuffs. Plastics films like polyvinyl acetate, and polythelne are used for producing plastic based ribbons. Plant & Machinery Required: Automatic Slitting Machine, Mixer, Pot Mill, Spooling Machine, Roller Machine with a trough to ink the tapes. Manufacturing Process: As mentioned earlier Ribbons are made of narrow woollen fabric tape made of cotton, silk or nylon. The manufacture of finished ribbons involves two stages, i.e. preparation of ink and coating of the base tape with the ink. In the manufacture of ribbon ink, all materials are metered in the predetermined proportions by weight and /or by volume into a heated jacketed kettle and allowed to melt and mix under constant agitation. After the crude ink has been mixed, it is ground thoroughly in a pot mill. Roller mills are most popular and the best means for grinding carbon inks. They produce the most uniform inks at the lowest cost. The mill which is jacketed.and heated by steam or hot water, is run for required number of hours and the finished ink is discharged into trays and allowed to solidify. After this the ink is ready for the application to the tape. Application of Ink to the Tape: The base fabric is put on the roll of an automatic slitting aaachine which is equipped with circular knives. The width of the tape in which the cloth is to be slit determines the distance between the drives, which cut the cloth roll into tapes. To prevent fraying, the edges of these tapes should be seemed with suitable lacquers. Then the ink which is fed through a trough, is applied to the ribbon on a machine by a series of rollers. The ribbons are heavily inked, uniformly moves the entire ribbon. The ribbons can be (a) impregnated throughout, (b) surface treated, (c) inked on one side only or inked both sides simultaneously. Bicolour ribbons are inked in two stages and the whole operation must be monitored very carefully. After inking ribbons are cut to standard lengths and would found spools on a spooling machine and wrapped in moisture proof tissues and further in aluminium foils or polythene film bags. These spools are then placed in printed plastic containers.
