INTERVIEWING ASSIGNMENT
Overview of Assignment: You will choose someone to interview. It can be a family member, a co-worker or a friend. The objective of the assignment is to better understand the role of the interviewer and to practice the skills we have been learning in class; empathy, listening, non-verbal communication, etc. When choosing the person you will interview, you want to be sure it is someone with whom you can sit and speak to face to face. This assignment cannot be done over the phone. The topic of the interview should be something that you know little or nothing about that happened in the life of the interviewee. Perhaps there is a family secret you wish to gather information about---or an event that the person participated in that you do not know much about. It should be an opportunity for you to learn something. Do not attempt to conduct the interview on a topic that you already know. It will be boring for you and for your interviewee. Find a topic that you think is interesting and that your interviewee feels comfortable discussing with you. You may be surprised at how enjoyable this assignment can be and how much you will learn! The following pages provide guidelines for the assignment, as well as a sample question agenda. Additional help and information is available on blackboard as well.

Interview Assignment Steps

1. Select a person to interview. You will be conducting an interview that

will probably take at least an hour to an hour and a half with this person.

2. Choose a focus for your interview. Some examples might be: a. Interviewing your uncle about his tour of duty in Vietnam b. Interviewing your mother about growing up on a Native American reservation c. Interview a parent about an arranged marriage d. Interview a family friend about how he/she started his/her own business e. Look for other ideas on the Possible Topics sheet enclosed in this packet. 3. Carefully plan your interview. This includes writing a QUESTION AGENDA. This agenda will dictate the purpose of your interview by outlining what questions you wish to ask in which order. It helps to organize the interview so that it runs smoothly for both you and the interviewee. a. You may wish to review the sample question agenda included in this packet. b. You should have a TOPIC HEADING and the questions listed below that heading should all fall under that category. c. I will want to see a DRAFT of this agenda BEFORE you conduct your interview. This ensures that your agenda will be successful during your interview. 4. You may conduct background research if you feel it is necessary. a. If you are interviewing someone about a historical event that you are not familiar with, you may wish to research the basics of that event in order to better understand the interviewees responses. b. Consider interviewing other family members to fill in gaps in your information about a family situation or chain of events. 5. Conduct the interview a. Call ahead and arrange a time that is convenient for both of you block out 2 hours just to be safe. b. Choose a location for the interview that is free from noise or distraction. c. Ask permission of the interviewee to tape the interview if you have a tape recorder. i. DO NOT tape the interview if your interviewee does not wish to be recorded. d. If you dont tape the interview, you must figure out a way to take notes so that you can remember what was said. Remember that anything that is said about family life is important in an oral family interview. You may allow your interviewee to go off on a tangent, still pursuing the focus of your interview. During the interview:

a. Make the interviewee feel comfortable. You may want to start with some small talk before getting into the interview questions. b. listen carefully

c. Dont rush the interviewee. d. Give the interviewee eye contact and facial feedback.
e. Ask easy questions at the beginning to help the interviewee if they are nervous. f. Try not to interrupt.

g. Dont let the interview become a conversation.

h. Dont challenge the accuracy of what the interviewee says.

i. Leave the controversial questions till late in the interview. j. Probe for more information/examples. k. Paraphrase to make sure you understand the answers. l. Ask only one question at a time.

After the interview a. Thank the interviewee for their time and their contribution. b. Play back the tape or go over your notes to prepare for your paper. c. Write your paperuse the interviewees voice, not your own. Dont interpret what he/she saiduse his/her words. Paper requirements: Your paper MUST be typed, double spaced, and free of grammatical and spelling errors. The length of your paper will depend on your interview. There is no page limit; however, it is hard to imagine all of the following requirements done with less than 8 pages. The length is determined by the interview.

The order of your paper is as follows:

1. Cover sheet i. This should include your name, the interviewees name and SPH 109. 2. Question Agenda i. This is the list of all the questions you have asked. It may have changed since I saw your draft, or may not have. In any case, a copy of the agenda must be included here,

3. Two-page summary of what YOU learned from this

experience. i. This is not a summary of the questions or your interpretation of the questions. I want you to tell me what it was like doing this assignment. Was it difficult to put together an agenda? Was it a positive experience? What did you learn about interviewing, etc.? i. This is arranged in PARAGRAPH form. Meaning, you will use your topic heading and them type the answers to the questions under the heading in a paragraph. I DO NOT want a list of answers. I want a paragraph. ii. Again, use the interviewees voice, not yours.

4. The ANSWERS to your interview questions

5. The self-evaluation i. Be specific and detailed. Answer each question honestly and thoroughly. 6. Interviewee evaluation i. Ask your interviewee to complete the form. Ask that they are also specific in their answers.
