Real or Fake Trees?
When it comes to one of the most popular holiday traditions in the United States, it
seems Americans can’t make up their minds as whether to go au naturel or artificial.
According to the National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA), 31.3 million real trees

the number of artificial trees (17.4 million) that were purchased that same year.
However, while the number of real trees purchased in 2007 increased by more than 10
percent from 2006, the number of artificial trees by a much larger percentage. The

Instead of purchasing fruit from a long distance mail order firm, consider
assembling a fruit basket of your own from a local farmer or orchard. Many
varieties of apples and pears are still available in the winter months and some of
our local farmers have markets which operate year round.
For a personal touch, you can even find a hand made basket which can be kept
long after the food gift has been consumed. Adding some local jams, jellies or even
a locally produced bottle of wine or liquor to your basket could make it very special.
What about the gardener in your life? There are books, gardening accessories
and plants that can be purchased as gifts. Everyone enjoys a beautiful poinsettia
or wreath during the holidays and there are a multitude of local nurseries who can
even supply a small tree, as a permanent reminder of your gift giving. Nurseries
always have lots of greenery on hand this time of year which would make an
ideal holiday centerpiece for that special someone. Consider adding a vintage
holiday vase, ornament or collectible to your greenery.
Recycled goods are definitely in this year. Do you know a bargain shopper
who loves browsing through consignment shops for deals? Why not give them
what they really want – an opportunity to really linger at their favorite antique
shop, pawn shop or flea market. Some local dealers will welcome the opportunity
to offer gift certificates for the holidays. Loved ones who are in need of furniture,
appliances or other major items could stretch their dollar much further if they
purchased gently used items.
Everyone seems to enjoy cookies and confections during the holidays. Vintage
cookie jars can be purchased inexpensively and packed full of goodies that you made
yourself or with a combination of bakery purchased items and home made items.
Try to incorporate something personal with your purchase. Do you know
someone who enjoys hunting, fishing or golf? Why give them a tie or slippers
when what they’d really like is outdoor apparel, a day of golf or an opportunity to
shop and purchase what they want from a specialized dealer. Do you know a
mechanic, a carpenter or even a weekend warrior who would much prefer a
power tool or chain saw rather than a new robe?

It’s true that women love to be pampered and purchasing a gift certificate from
a favorite hair, nail or tanning salon will be a great pick-me-up long after the
holidays. Fragrances and bath products can be purchased from your local drug
store and they always seem to make Christmas more festive. Another big hit with
women seems to be cleaning services (perhaps because they do still do most of
the family chores?) Who wouldn’t love extra cleaning help with all of those extra
house guests? A gift certificate for a maid service can make everything from your
windows to your oven sparkle just in the nick of time.
Gift certificates from local pharmacies can also be a relief for an elderly person
who has been hit with unusually high prescription costs. You might also consider a
“home made” gift certificate for one day’s snow removal for your elderly neighbor
or a certificate to drive them to a doctor’s appointment or other errand.
Why not take a family vote and purchase one big item this year? Consider
something that the whole family can participate in such as a swimming pool, a
hot tub, a pool table or even an ATV for weekend fun. Perhaps the family needs a
new or used car and instead of buying many small items, purchase the one thing
that everyone can benefit from. Now that gas prices have come down and car
prices are at the lowest point ever, maybe this is the Christmas to finally purchase
that new family vehicle. Many local dealers offer in-house financing which could
make this holiday very special indeed.
Contractors are readily available now to make that renovation dream a reality.
Perhaps a new bathroom is what the family could really use or even a garage
door or a kitchen makeover. This is a great time to purchase new flooring,
carpeting or even a room full of furniture at better prices than you ever imagined.
We all love a night out on the town and a gift certificate from a favorite
restaurant is always welcome. Consider the location of the restaurant and the
availability of pre-paid discounts before purchasing. Real bargains are available
at certain establishments when purchased inadvance. For instance, a $25.00 gift
certificate may only cost $20.00 if purchased before the holidays. Many
establishments offer entertainment, live music or special event tickets and gift
certificates can be purchased in advance and given out during the holidays.

which you may not be familiar. Here are a few little-known facts about Christmas.
