Passage Eight : A HIDDEN LINE (Architecture)

There is a hidden line in our nations capital. Washington, D. C. The line is easy to see once we point it out to you and tell you what it is like. The line starts on Capitol Hill, a hill in the middle of washington. D.C. Three building sit on this hill. One is the Capitol, the building where the Congress sits. Another is the Supreme Court Building, where the Supreme Court Justices sit. Another is the Library of Congress, which is our national library of record; that is, it has copies of everything published in the United States. The line runs west from Capitol Hill. First, the line goes through the Mall. The Mall is the place where most of our national museums are. Second, the line goes through the Washington Monument. This Monument helps us to remember George Washington, our great Revolutionary War leader and our first president. The White House is just north of the Washington monument. The president lives and works in the White Monument. This memorial helps us to remember Thomas Jefferson, the author of our Declaration of Independence and our second president. Third, the line runs through the Reflecting Pool and the Lincoln Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial helps us remember Abraham Lincoln, our great Civil War president. The Lincoln Memorial also is where Martin Luther King, Jr., made his famous I Have a Dream speech. Fourth, the line goes west and stops at the Lee-Custis house and Arlington National Cemetery. Robert E. Lee was a great Civil War general. Arlington National Cemetery for members of the armed forces and others who served the nation. This hidden line, then, joins some of the most important places in our national life.
