Foundation Focus
This year, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation celebrates 40 years of helping Americans lead healthier lives and get the highquality health care they need. As we reflect on and celebrate our accomplishments over four decades, its gratifying to see that Human Capital is such an integral part of our founders legacy. Robert Wood Johnson, like all of you, was an innovator and agent of change. Most people referred to him as General Johnson, or simply The General, for the time hed spent as a brigadier general in World War II. The General understood the importance of investing in people to create change. He was a staunch advocate for improved education and training of both doctors and nurseswith the aim of improving quality of care for patients, whom he saw as sometimes being lost in the shuffle. As a result, scholarship support in health care was at the core of the Generals philanthropic vision. We think of our Human Capital grantees as General Johnsons kindred spirits, carrying his legacy into the 21st century. He would be proud of what each of you is accomplishing. You have demonstrated that you are bold change agentsin many cases, improving the lives of those whose needs would go unmet otherwise. Since the day the Foundation opened its doors, weve been dedicated to rethinking the nations health policies and practices helping people to help others through research, community outreach, and a strong health care workforce. In fact, our first major grant initiative, the Clinical Scholars program, was the flagship of our investment in people. Today, the Foundation boasts nearly 20 Human Capital programs that seek out and support health care leaders across disciplines who have the potential to transform our health care system. Throughout this 40th anniversary year, well be telling your stories and accomplishments in a range of venues. We will also share our vision for the future of health and health care. I invite you to share your thoughts and ideas on the topic via the Grantee and Alumni Networks, and the Human Capital Blog. Stay
