RADIOLOGY DIRECTORATE JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Purpose To work as a member of the multi disciplinary Interventional and Cardiac Radiology teams providing an efficient and effective interventional Imaging service. To undertake a wide range of specialist vascular, non vascular and cardiac imaging examinations whilst optimising patient care. The post includes rotation through the Interventional Suite and the cardiac Investigation unit. Participation in the Cardiac and Vascular on Call rotas is required. Key responsibilities

Perform Cardiac and Vascular angiograms plus a wide range of interventional examinations to include EVARs , peripheral vascular, biliary procedures and RFAs Undertake the Role of Co coordinator in the Interventional Suite. Plan and prioritise workload and staffing adjusting rota to maximise efficiency of labs in conjunction with Lead Radiographer, Radiologist and ,Cardiologists

Assist with the day-to-day organisation of the department and supervision of more junior staff in liaison with senior staff and Superintendents. Participate in the out of hours Vascular and Cardiac on-call rotas Clinical

1. To undertake unsupervised and be accountable for highly specialist imaging examinations of patients. To position patients accurately so as to maintain the highest possible standard of radiography.

2. Interventional radiography requires highly developed physical skills where a degree of


precision and speed in moving the x-ray equipment to obtain the clinical information is critical. A high degree of manual dexterity and hand-eye-coordination is required. 3. Cardiac radiography is unpredictable and emergency life and death situations can occur at any time. Highly developed physically skills where a degree of precision and speed in moving the x-ray equipment to obtain the clinical information is critical.

4. Plan and prioritise own patient workload keeping waiting times to a minimum. 5. Analyse condition related information and assess patients to plan and undertake radiographic examinations, which optimise patient care, minimise discomfort and result in high quality diagnostic images

6. To use specialist knowledge to make decisions and advise referrers with respect to the
most appropriate techniques and modalities to be employed in imaging the patient. 7. To use Quantitative Coronary analysis and vessel analysis to advise Cardiologist on size of balloon, stent or catheter to be used during procedures. The radiographers analysis has a direct impact on decisions and treatment techniques. 8. To take part in patient resuscitation in times of emergency. 9. To have an understanding of the balloon sizes, stents and catheters available, which may be needed during the procedures.

10. To set flow rates and pressures of the contrast injector pump as set down by the
departmental policies. 11. To have an understanding of aseptic techniques and the ability to set up sterile trolleys.

12. To assist nursing staff as necessary, opening of sterile packs and any other associated
equipment. 13. To take part in patient resuscitation in times of emergency. 14. To be able to undertake a wide range of radiographic techniques and have the ability to modify these techniques when appropriate, taking into account the patients condition. Some patients may be terminally ill, distressed and in pain, have difficulties communicating (e.g. hard of hearing, CVA), learning difficulties, be under the influence of drugs or alcohol or be verbally aggressive. Occasionally patients may be violent. 15. Comply with the Ionising regulations for medical exposures 2000 (IR(ME)R), ensuring all radiographic requests are justified and authorised as detailed in the regulations and departmental protocols.

16. Understand and apply the principles of Direct Digital Radiography (DR) to optimise
image quality. 17. Competent in the use of the PACS (Picture Archive Communication Solution) enabling efficient reviewing and transmission of digital images and scanning of documents. 18. Use radiographic knowledge and experience to keep patient radiation doses As Low as Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) 19. Comply with the trusts minimal lifting and handling policy ensuring the use of recognised and safe techniques. Radiographic examinations involve the use of large, expensive, complex and heavy equipment and the manipulation of the patients body to ensure correct positioning and centring for each radiographic projection.

20. Observe Infection Control policies with regards to patients, staff and equipment. Ensure
x-ray rooms and equipment are clean, tidy before each patient episode.

21. Evaluate images for radiographic quality, diagnostic quality and pathology to determine whether additional projections are required to ensure radiological interpretation is optimised. 22. To undertake any other such duties as may be deemed necessary by the Superintendent/Senior Clinical Leader and agreed by mutual consent.

23. Concentration will be required when undertaking all the above tasks. The work pattern
can be unpredictable when working in the A/E department out of hours. Ability to maintain concentration during lengthy vascular procedures.

PROFESSIONAL 24. Be professionally responsible for own actions. 25. Ensure competency in all aspects of equipment use and radiographic techniques are maintained and developed by reflective practise, clinical supervision. 26. Demonstrate commitment to Continuous Professional development (CPD) by attending short specialist courses, occasionally attending MDT meetings and maintaining a CPD portfolio. CPD portfolio to be used in conjunction with the trusts annual appraisal system and dept Link grade competencies. 27. Participate in audits and clinical research as required by the department. 28. Participate in the departments quality control programme. 29. Demonstrate an understanding of Clinical Governance and Risk Management and apply this in the work situation. 30. To arrive promptly for duty wearing the designated uniform

Management 31. To assist in the day-to-day organisation within the department and liase with the Superintendent Radiographer in providing an efficient service. 32. To be responsible for prioritising and planning work in own angiography room by liasing with the wards and the multidisciplinary teams. 33. Multi-tasking between one specialist modality and another on a daily basis. 34. Supervise the work and assist with training of more recently qualified radiographers, student radiographers and assistant practitioners. 35. To supervise, advise, support and train senior radiographers and radiographers working in the same departmental area in specialised techniques, and on all aspects of imaging examinations as appropriate, taking into account the demands on the service.

36. Record and report all equipment faults, untoward occurrences and accidents and bring them to the attention of the Superintendent Radiographer. 37. Implement Departmental and Trust Policies and Procedures. Contribute to the development of departmental policies and procedures

38. Monitor stock levels of supplies in x-ray rooms and top up cupboards as required.
39. To have an understanding of the stock control system within the Cardiac Labs and Interventional suite to assist in the maintenance of stock levels.

40. Maintain a high level of expertise in the safe operation of highly specialised and
expensive x-ray equipment and manage faults effectively. Communication 41. To enter patient and examination related information on to the computerised radiology information system (RIS) ensuring that data held is accurate and completed in a timely manner. Comply with the data Protection act.

42. To ensure all documentation complies with mandatory requirements of IR(ME)R


regulations and that patient records on the radiology information system are complete and accurate. 43. To communicate effectively with patients regards the radiology service and their examinations. Some patients may be terminally ill, distressed and in pain, have difficulties communicating (e.g. hard of hearing, CVA), learning difficulties, be under the influence of drugs or alcohol or be verbally aggressive. Occasionally patients may be violent. 44. Liase effectively with the multi disciplinary team Environment 45. This post involves frequent pushing and manoeuvring of patient trolleys and wheelchairs, the safe transfer of patients from trolley/chair to x-ray table and the occasional use of mechanical lifting aids.

46. Wear heavy lead rubber aprons and thyroid shields during fluoroscopic and mobile
procedures, sometimes in a hot theatre environment ensuring compliance with Depts policy for the wearing of lead aprons.

47. Angiography procedures require the radiographer to stand at tableside for periods >2
hours whilst wearing heavy personal protective equipment. Manoeuvring and positioning the x-ray equipment, table and monitors is needed in order to demonstrate patient anatomy.

48. The post holder will frequently be exposed to bodily fluids; unpleasant odours, foul linen
and on occasion parasitic infestations.

SMOKING The Trust has a responsibility to provide a safe and healthy environment for everyone who is working, visiting or living on hospital premises. Smoking is NOT allowed on site except within the designated smoking areas and shelters for staff and patients. The Trust will not tolerate smoking in undesignated areas and there is a zero tolerance approach to all staff who continue to do so. All Managers/ Heads of Department and Clinical Leaders In accordance with the Trusts Risk Assessment policy and Risk management strategy, all managers/heads of department and Clinical Leaders are responsible for ensuring that they and their staff, comply with all Trust and department health and safety policies and procedures. INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL The prevention and appropriate management of infection is of paramount importance in the quality and safety of the care of patients, and to the safety of visitors and members of staff. It is the responsibility of all staff to be aware of, assess and minimise these risks and comply fully with Infection Prevention and Control Policies.

The Health Act 2006 establishes a Code of Practice for the Prevention and Control of Health Care Associated Infections. It sets out criteria by which NHS managers ensure that patients are cared for in a clean environment where the risk of Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAI) is kept as low as possible. Managers, Heads of departments and Clinical Leaders are responsible for ensuring that : The necessary equipment and mechanisms are in place to support infection prevention health care workers are free of and are protected from exposure to communicable infections during the course of their work, and that all staff are suitably educated in the prevention and control of HCAI CARBON SUSTAINABILITY The Trust is committed to continual improvement in minimising the impact of its activities on the environment and expects all members of staff to play their part in achieving this goal and in particular to work towards a 10% carbon reduction by 2016.

CRIMINAL RECORDS DISCLOSURE As part of our recruitment procedure this post will be subject to a Criminal Record Disclosure. Disclosures provide details of a persons criminal record including convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings held on the Police National Computer.
