(ARA) - In todays economy, people want to
know how they can keep their vehicles on the
road for longer periods of time. Frequent
maintenance will keep your car in good
health, ensuring you get the most out of all
those expensive-to-replace parts, according
to the Car Care Council. When does it make
sense to upgrade to a premium automotive
product?
Thats a question that stumps a lot of people
when confronted with the wide range of
prices for seemingly comparable products.
Here are a few tips on common automotive
product categories to help you make informed
decisions.
Gasoline: Engines are designed to use a
particular grade/octane of gasoline. While
some auto manufacturers specify using a high-
octane gasoline, some consumers purchase the
higher octane gasoline based on the assump-
tion that its better for the car. However, there
is no beneft in using a higher octane than
recommended by the manufacturer. In fact, if
you paid 40 cents a gallon extra to purchase
super premium gas as opposed to regular, that
would cost you an additional $320 a year
(assuming 12,000 miles driven and 15 miles
per gallon).
The bottom line: Dont use a higher octane
rating than recommended by the cars manu-
facturer.
Motor oil: Lubrication technology has seen
signifcant improvements over the years. The
longer oil life of high-performance synthetic
motor oil allows for extended oil drains, sav-
ing time and money, and reducing the impact
on the environment. Additionally, some
high-performance synthetic oils such as Royal
Purple have been reported to improve mileage
as much as 3 percent or more. Three percent
may not seem like a substantial amount, but
it can result in hundreds of dollars in savings
over the course of a year.
The bottom line: Upgrade to a high-perfor-
mance synthetic motor oil for extended oil
drains and improved fuel economy.
Wiper blades: Where you live is the critical
factor in determining the value of upgrading
to a premium wiper. There is a noticeable per-
formance difference in low-cost wiper blades
versus those specifcally designed for rainy and
snowy climates. Premium wiper blades are
considerably sturdier and more durable than
low priced blades.
The bottom line: Rainy and snowy climates
justify spending a few dollars more for pre-
mium wiper blades.
Oil flters: Inexpensive flters are typically
made with the 3,000 mile interval in mind.
These flters often use low-quality paper
media for fltration and deteriorate rapidly
after 3,000 miles. The new generation of
high-performance premium oil flters from
manufacturers such as K&N, Royal Purple
and others allow for extended oil drain
intervals. For example, Royal Purple uses a
proprietary long-life, micro-glass media that
provides protection for 12,000 miles. It also
provides an increased level of protection due
to the density of the fltration. You can fnd

The bottom line: Upgrade to a premium oil
flter if you plan to extend oil drain intervals
or if you operate your vehicle in extreme
conditions such as dusty environments or cold
weather climates.

Get your pool ready for safe family fun
(ARA) - As the weather starts to warm, you cant help but stare at your backyard pool, anxious to begin a
new season of memories with friends and family. No matter the season, pool safety should always be top of
mind where children are concerned. With safety barriers - or layers of protection - in place between the home
and the pool, you can experience the pleasures of backyard swimming pools and feel confdent that children,
grandchildren and visitors will be safeguarded from pool accidents.
Its impossible to watch your children every second of every day. There are times when a parent or caregiver is
distracted by answering the phone or door, household tasks or checking email. Unfortunately, accidents tend
to happen very quickly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the second
leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 to 14. The CDC reports that in most cases, the children
involved were out of their parents sight for less than fve minutes.
The good news: Drowning can be prevented. Barriers help buy those few minutes needed to see where children
are after youve momentarily lost sight of them.
Numerous studies have shown that an isolation fence separating the home from the pool can prevent 50 to 90
percent of all toddler drownings. Only an isolation fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate in proper work-
ing order will prevent children from getting into the water without your knowledge.
Liability can become an issue if a visitor is injured. Homeowners can improve the safety and security of their
pools or spas with isolation fencing with self-closing, self-latching gate hardware by D&D Technologies (www.

If you have a pool, you have a responsibility to safeguard it. There is no substitute for vigilant supervision. But
there are additional steps you can and should take to keep everyone safe - including these.
* Never prop a gate open for convenience or during pool parties. Its simply not worth the risk.
* Always ensure that doors from the home are locked, alarmed, or ftted with child-safety latching devices.
* Ensure that pet doors are secured or open into an area that is isolated from the pool.
* If the house forms one side of the barrier, doors leading into the pool area should be protected with alarms
that produce a loud sound when the door is unexpectedly opened.
* Power safety covers that meet American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards can be very
effective if closed whenever the pool is not in use. Manually operated covers tend to be left open; closing them
frequently requires two adults.
* Ensure children in the home learn how to swim, and that adults know CPR. CPR can make the difference
between full recovery and brain damage or death. If anyone else will be supervising kids in the pool, make sure
they learn it, too. Impress upon babysitters that they must follow your safety rules.
* When children are in the pool, designate a water watcher to maintain uninterrupted supervision of children
in the pool at all times.
* When not in use, keep toys and other objects out of the pool area, and dont use chlorine dispensers that look
like animals or toys that will attract children.
