COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course is designed to provide engineers with the proper foundations in chemistry. PRE-REQUISITES: NIL COURSE CONTENTS: Sr. No. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 DESCRIPTION Electronic configuration and Chemical Bonding : Quantum Numbers, atomic orbitals, electronic configuration, the building up principles, hybridization, VSEPR and Molecular orbital theory (Homonuclear diatomic molecules and ions) Chemical Kinetics and catalysis : Reaction rates, rate law and order determination, first order reaction, second order reaction and zero order reaction, activation energy and temperature dependence of rate constant, Arrhenius Equation, reaction Mechanism, rate laws and elementary steps. catalysis and its types Electrochemistry: Review on redox reactions, galvanic Cells, standard reduction potentials, electrochemical series, The Nernst Equation, Ion selective electrodes, calculation of equilibrium constant for redox reactions, concentration cells, electrolysis ( H2O, NaCl). Acids and Bases: Nature, acid strength, pH and its scale, calculation of pH of strong and weak acids, percentage dissociation, bases, acid base properties of salts. Transition metal chemistry: Properties of transition metals, electronic configuration , oxidation states and Ionization energy. MTE Coordination Compounds: Coordination number, ligands, nomenclature, isomerism in coordination compounds, bonding in coordination compounds: crystal field theory, CFT in octahedral CFT in tetrahedral and square planer complexes, Crystal field stabilization energy. Basics of electron displacement effects: Inductive effect, electromeric effect, resonance effect and hyper conjugation effect ,reactive intermediates:-Free radicals, carbocation, carbanions and their stability. Isomerism in organic compounds: Structural isomerism in alkanes and cylcloalkanes, geometrical isomerism in alkenes, syn and anti. Types of organic reactions: Substitution reactions: SN1and SN2 and Walden Inversion, addition reactions( Markownikoffs and Peroxide effect) , Elimination reactions (E1 and E2 reactions) Polymers: Properties, types of polymers, addition and condensation polymers, tacticity, natural polymers (basics only ), Zeigler-Natta polymerization.

the lectures and detail of demos. and other supplement materials will be mentioned in the Instruction plan.

2. Three tests (Evaluative) will be conducted so as to recapitulate the contents. Two best will be
considered. 3. Home work may also be given but it will be non evaluative. 4. Physical demonstrations will also be shown to the students in the classes so as to develop interest and better understanding of a topic.
