MAKE PLANS NOW FOR SUMMER ENCAMPMENT

Monticello Composite Squadron Leadership
Captain Mike Wormington Squadron Commander 434-973-9286 ww2t@virginia.edu Lt. Col David Duncan Deputy Commander for Cadets duncand@comcast.net C/CMSgt Daniel Bryant Cadet Commander C/MSgt Sean Connolly Deputy Cadet Commander C/CMSgt Martin Simpkins Cadet Executive Officer For most Civil Air Patrol cadets, attending their first statewide encampment is one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of their youth, and one that creates even greater enthusiasm for the variety of experiences the Civil Air Patrol has to offer. From reveille and PT in the early morning and observing military customs and courtesies, to tackling obstacle courses or riding in a Blackhawk helicopter, cadets agree that attending encampment can be a life-changing experience. And parents notice a difference in their child as well. Cadets live in barracks at Fort Pickett, VA and take their meals in the mess hall. This years encampment dates are Friday, June 24 through Sunday, July 3. The registration deadline is May 27, and the cost is $175. Our squadron will have an informational meeting for parents and cadets at the beginning of the April 26 meeting. Attendance at encampment is often a prerequisite for other Civil Air Patrol courses, such as National Cadet Special Activities.

CONGRATULATIONS
Cadet Chief Master Sergeant Martin Simpkins, Monticello Composite Squadrons Cadet Executive Officer, has been appointed to the 2011 Virginia Wing Encampment Cadet Staff as a Flight Sergeant.

STAMP OUT HUNGER FOOD DRIVE

In 2008, the Monticello Composite Squadron volunteered for the first time for the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. At the main post office in Charlottesville, cadets and senior members work alongside letter carriers unloading donated food from the postal trucks, sorting the food into bins and loading the bins onto trailers for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. This annual food drive is of critical importance to the food bank, replenishing its supplies for the summer months when kids are home from school. Last years drive brought in more than 60,000 lbs of food, most of which was unloaded and sorted at the main post office. The help of our squadron every year has made a huge difference in the success of the food drive. The chair of the food drive points out that having a pool of hard working, disciplined volunteers who are familiar with the routine is a large part of their success. And the cadets enjoy the teamwork and the great barbeque all day long.
Our experience with the Civil Air Patrol is absolutely first rate. When I see

the uniformed young men and women arrive on the scene it is like knowing that the cavalry has arrived. They are totally dependable, relentlessly hard working and we could not get the job done without their help. It is an awesome project they take on, cheerfully hauling and sorting 35 tons of food through the Charlottesville office. We are very proud and pleased to have them stand with us to make a difference in helping the needy in our community. It is an honor to be associated with their organization. --Brenda Farrell, National Association of Letter Carriers branch 518 food drive coordinator.

We need two shifts of volunteers: 12:00 - 4:30 p.m. 3:30 - 8:30 p.m
