: A Tiger InTranquil Water : 72 x 48 in : 2008 : Painting : Acrylic

1.3.2 History of A Tiger In Tranquil Water History of A Tiger In Tranquil Water In the making of this painting, the painter, Johan Marjonid uses acrylic as a medium and it is all about image of the nature life. This painting, based on the artist interpretation, he said that he wanted to show the calmness and the ferocious of the water and the tiger. Based on the painting, flora and fauna are both connected, in other way they depends on each other. The artist mention that this painting has no other intention, but he had mention about the water has its own calmness as well as the tiger, and the water has its own ferocious as well as the tiger too. There is no specific story or history about this artwork, because Johan Marjonid usually will imitates the pictures that he had taken while he was on his own expedition in some of the famous rainforest in Malaysia. About the log beneath the tiger, he said that it is for a little bit of magic touch and it is to add some other element to make the painting more interesting. He did mention that if the log is not there, the painting will look like it is missing something. He had mention about the choice of making a tiger as the main subject, rather than other animal. It is because of the tigerscolour that makes the tiger as the emphasis of the painting.

1.4 Observation In Artwork 1.4.1 List of The Literal Objects In Painting

The literal objects that are found in this artwork includes a tiger, a log and water.

1.4.2 ART ELEMENT IN ARTWORK There are six art elements that we can identified in this artwork such as line, shape, colour, space, form, and value. Line is most easily defined as a mark that spans a distance between two points or the path of a moving point, taking any form along the way. As an art element, line pertains to the use of various marks, outlines and implied lines in artwork and design, most often used to define shape in two-dimensional work. Implied line is the path that the viewer's eye takes as it follows shapes, colours, and forms along a path, but may not be continuous or physically connected. Shape pertains to the use of areas in two dimensional spaces that can be defined by edges, setting one flat specific space apart from another. Shapes can be geometric such as square, circle, triangle, and hexagon or organic such as the shape of a puddle, blob, leaf, and boomerang in nature. Colour pertains to the use of hue in artwork and design. Defined as primary colour are red, blue and yellow which cannot be mixed in pigment from other hues, secondary colours are green, orange, and purple which are directly mixed from combinations of primary colours. Further combinations of primary and secondary colours create tertiary and more hues. Space is the area provided for a particular purpose. Space includes the background, foreground and middle ground. Space refers to the distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece. There are two types of space, positive and negative space. Positive space refers to the space of a shape representing the subject matter. Negative space refers to the space around and between the subject matter. Space is also defined as the distance between identifiable points or planes in a work of art. Form may be created by the forming of two or more shapes or as three-dimensional shape such as cube, pyramid, sphere, and cylinder. Form is considered three-dimensional showing height, width and depth. Value, or tone, refers to the use of light and dark, shade and highlight, in an artwork. Black-and-white photography depends entirely on value to define its subjects. Value is directly related to contrast.

CHAPTER 3 INTERPRETATION

3.1 . The Content of Artwork Three of us have the some idea of this painting about what the artist trying to say. For us this artwork shows that the habitat of his tiger had been destroyed by the human activity which is illegal logging. Thus, the tiger have to live in the water. The look of the tiger eyes strengthens the evidence to show its sadness. The artist creates this artwork to show the cruelness of humans that undergoes illegal logging. The artist also trying to show us the sadness of the animals that lost their habitat caused by the humans activity. This artwork means that the population of tiger in Malaysia has decreased. The artwork symbolizes the rainforest. The tiger represent all animals in rainforest while the log represent the trees that have been cut down. About the feeling that we feel when we look at this artwork, three of us got difference feeling. For Atira, she feels mysterious when she looked at this artwork. However, Azeema feels sad and sorrow while Nadiah feels calm but in the same time she felt the ferocious in this painting.

3.1.2 Interpretation from colour This artwork shows sadness maybe because he apply a lot of cool colour. The artist uses more darker colour than light colour in his artwork to show the sadness. However, the artist trying to show the real sadness maybe in his artwork by applying the contrast colour which is orange at the tiger. The soreness and the sadness of this painting is shown by the artist by choices of colours. As we notice, he applied orange colour which is the colour of the tiger to emphasize the subject.

3.1.3 Interpretation From The Artworks Composition Through this artwork , the tiger is at the back ground give space to show the movement of the water. The log is situated under the tiger to show that the tiger had to face the obstacles. Other than that, the log is situated near to tiger represent the fauna whereas the log represent flora. This shows that fauna and flora are depend and attach to each other.

3.1.4 Interpretation From The Theme

Based on what we see in this painting, the theme is rainforest. This is due to the three characters used in this painting which there of them represent environment. The tiger represent the faunas while the log represent the floras. The water shows that the rainforest environment. Thus, this artwork theme is about rainforest.

CHAPTER 4 JUDGEMENT

4.1 Artwork Appreeciation Overall, we like this artwork. For Atira, she like this artwork because it is simple and nice. This artwork use only three character and this make it looks tidy and well-organize. For Azeema, she like this artwork because the artwork is unique. The number of dark colour used in this painting are several and the artist used only one warm colour as contrast to represent the emphasis of the artwork. The effect applied on the water make this artwork looks awesome and this artwork looks so real. For Nadiah, she like this artwork because the colour used in this artwork is very blend. This painting has its own interpretation and story behind it. This make the viewer feel they wanted to know more about the story of this painting.

4.2 Weakness / Story Element In This Artwork There is are weakness in this artwork. This artwork is too plain because the character used in this artwork is not much. This artwork only contains one tiger with a log and water environment. However, there are some strong element in this artwork. The colour used in this artwork is attach to the theme which to show about the rainforest. The tiger character is strong when the artist used orange colour on it. The movement of the water wave makes this artwork becomes more interesting and it looks realistic.
