FROM THE PASTORS DESK

Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! This weekend marks the Third Sunday in Lent. How are you doing with your Lenten resolutions at this point? How are we doing as a parish family in terms of embracing the disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving which are intended to make us more aware of our dependence upon God and of our need for conversion? If youre stuck at this point or feel that your best Lenten intentions have somehow gotten derailed, take heart. You can push the restart button at any time and get going again. Its not about perfection; the journey is bound to be a bit wobbly for most of us. The important thing is to keep going. Just put one step in front of the other. The whole concept of stepstaking steps, for example permeates the Lenten experience. In todays Gospel reading from John (2:13-25), Jesus takes some rather drastic steps to confront the Temple authorities in Jerusalem with their hypocrisy and corruption. When challenged by the money changers and stall owners whom He has expelled from the Temple precincts, Jesus asserts His identity, His purpose, and His authority. Jesus took steps to call attention to the real purpose and meaning of the Temple as the House of God. We are called to take steps in our Lenten observance to rediscover and reclaim the purpose and meaning of our lives as followers of Jesus. One of the most important steps we can takeboth individually and collectivelyis to reflect upon our lives, our decisions, our habits of heart and mind, our attitudes and beliefs. Weall of us are challenged to make a frank assessment of the ways in which our missteps have caused us to turn away from God, from others, and from ourselves. Our Catholic Christian tradition is at heart a sacramental onewe believe most profoundly in the importance and efficacy of the sacred moments given to us by Jesus which reassure us of the power of His Presence and Love. Moreover, we are invited in an especially poignant way during this Lenten season to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for Easter. Now, lets be really frank. Reconciliation is the one sacrament many Catholics absolutely dread. You did what?! How many times?! The stern admonishments of some harsh and insensitive confessors experienced in childhood or at a particularly vulnerable moment in life have needlessly driven people away from the celebration of what should be and is a most beautiful moment in which we experience the deep compassion and restorative Love of the Presence of Jesus. Always remember, my professor in confessional counseling urged, people have sinned against God, not against you, the confessor! So, be gentle with people. As one of the many blessings of the Second Vatican Council, I believe that in todays Church, we now have a deeper, healthier, and more compassionate understanding of sacramental Reconciliation. Its not a matter of the scrupulous

rendering of a laundry list of misdemeanors (with, perhaps, the occasional, mumbled felony sandwiched in). Rather, we now stress and celebrate our confidence in and gratitude towards a loving and gracious God who is always ready to welcome us home. This is not to minimize the reality and seriousness of sin, but rather to remind us of the infinite mercy (loving kindness) of our God. This year, think about taking advantage of celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliationeither at one of our communal Penance services this coming week (March 15, 7pm and March 17, 10am) or at any one of the services offered at any one of the 12 parishes that form our local deanery (check page #4 for details.) These community-wide celebrations remind us that all of us stand in need of Gods healing grace and that our attitudes and actions affect other people. Lets take this important step in our spiritual growth and journey together. God bless, Fr. Chuck

FR. ADRIANS CORNER

Saint Patrick: A Missionary for our Time
The conversion of Ireland to the Christian faith, attributed in the main to St. Patrick, was achieved without the spilling of blood. People are often surprised by this. Patrick and his fellow missionaries seemed to have had an appreciation for the culture they encountered in Ireland which was pagan and deeply spiritual. The Druid culture had a huge love for creation, for relationships of family and friendship and it considered nature sacred. Patrick took the gospel and presented it to the Celtic people as a confirmation of what they already believed but with the addition of the Blessed Trinity, Christ as Savior and the Church as the body of Christ. Pagan holy wells, for example, where people went to drink for cures were blessed and called after saints so that people continued the practice of visiting them but with a new faith based on Christ and honoring his Blessed Mother. Mountains, sacred to the Celtic people because they were thought to be shrouded in mystery and occupied by the gods, became places of pilgrimage where people ascended to encounter the living God. Holy Islands served as places of penance where people, once superstitious, came to value fasting and prayer in solitude as atonement for sin and a cleansing of the spirit. St. Patrick Christianized pagan practices and beliefs by adding what had been missing - the One God, Creator of all. Patrick converted the Celtic people of Ireland by respecting the spiritual practices and beliefs he found upon his arrival and offering them the missing link, Christ and the Good News. Though he lived well over a thousand years ago, St. Patrick is most definitely a saint for our time. His ministry was defined by a respect for difference, cultural diversity and gentle courage. We would do well to listen to him again as we present the Good News in our diverse community today. We will celebrate St. Patrick on Saturday March 17 with Mass at 5:00 p.m. followed by Pot Luck in the Parish Dining Room. Please bring something to share if you are joining us an appetizer, entre or dessert. Simply drop off your dish or platter before Mass at the Dining Room and pick it up later before you leave. Diane and Jim Manning would love to hear from you if you would like to help with set-up and/or cleanup. You may reach them at760-724-3319. Cad mle filte! A hundred thousand welcomes!

UPDATES
Two weeks ago, I placed a small notice here in the Bulletin, mentioning that we were collecting donations towards the scholarship fund for our parish school, Old Mission Montessori. Scholarships will be awarded solely on the basis of financial need and will consist of $2,000 grants to defray approximately half the cost of a years tuition. I am delighted to tell you that, to date, we have already received pledges and donations in the amount of $20,000! We need just another $10,000 to reach our goal of 15 scholarships for the 2012-2013 school year. We invite you to participate in this effort which will have an immediate, significant, and direct effect on the lives of our parish children and young people. Donations in any amount are deeply appreciated. Help us to make a quality Catholic education accessible to more or our parish families! Many thanks and God bless, Fr. Chuck

THE CATECHETICAL MINUTE ROMAN MISSALThe Nicene Creed Part 3

By the Holy Spirit was incarnate...The simple change from born to incarnate is one of the most important improvements in the new translation of the Creed, because it more accurately conveys the truth of the Incarnation the moment when the Son of God took flesh. This wording more accurately reflects the Latin text of the Mass which includes the word incarnates (incarnate). There was concern that the previous wording/translation could be interpreted to mean that Christ did not actually become man until the moment he was born. The reality is that the Son of God took on human nature from the moment of his conception. The Blessed Virgin Marys yes to the Archangel Gabriel at the Annunciation is the moment when the Son first came down from heaven to dwell among us. In using the term, incarnate the new translation removes all ambiguity in our professing our faith in the Creed. The significance of this line is liturgically emphasized by the fact that we bow while saying it, as an expression of reverence to the mystery of the Incarnation. Suffered deaththis replaces two verbs in the previous translation, suffered died. The Latin is somewhat ambiguous; literally it is he suffered and was buried, and the word suffered implies his dying. Because the verb died is not in the Latin text suffered death is seen as a better way to express what happened to Jesus. The point is that he really died, and that is what gives his Resurrection its full meaning. Describing the Resurrection as being in accordance with the Scriptures speaks inclusively of the New Testament in addition to fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. The next and last part of the Nicene Creed Adored

STEP BACK This Lenten Season We live such hectic, busy lives; there is often so little time to notice what is happening to us. Gathering together regularly with a few fellow parishioners in a Small Christian Community offers people a chance to slow down, to be a bit more reflective about life, to sift and sort the things that count. Over time the Small Christian Community becomes a place where members ask: How might God be acting in this crazy mixed-up life Im living, even if I dont pay much attention to Gods presence on a day to day basis? The Mission San Luis Rey Core Team invites you to consider joining an SCC. All cultures are welcomed to join or start a group (8 to 12 people). Find out more from Eileen Costa (SCC Coordinator), at (760) 231-9930; or Bartolo Mendez at (760) 945-3701; or Tavale Tavale at (760) 295-4088. Be a part of bringing the presence of Christs love to your Family and Mission San Luis Reys Parish Family.

Del Escritorio del Prroco

Querida Familia Parroquial,
