INTRODUCTION Welcome Welcome to the Learners Guide for Unit of Competency Follow Principles of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) in Work Environment. This is just one of a number of Learners Guides produced for the Core Skills stream of the Metal, Engineering and Maintenance, and it is designed to guide you, the learner, through a series of learning processes and activities that will enable you to achieve the specified learning outcomes for the competency unit. The content of this guide was developed from the Competency Standard MEMCOR0141A, which is one of the basic building blocks for the National Vocational Qualification of Jamaica (NVQ-J) certification within the industry. Please refer to your Learners Handbook for a thorough explanation of standards and competencies, and how these relate to the NVQJ certification. You are also advised to consult the Competency Standard and assessment instrument for a better understanding of what is required to master the competency.

This Competency Unit Follow Principles of Occupational Health and Safety in Work Environment addresses the knowledge and skills requirements to effectively use electrical/electronic measuring devices. There are two main areas or elements: Element 1: Element 2: Follow Safe Work Practices Report Workplace Hazards and Follow Emergency Procedures

As you go through each element, you will find critical information relating to each one. You are advised to study them carefully so that you will be able to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes for using electrical/electronic measuring devices.

Before you start Before you start this Learners Guide, you need to: a. Obtain a Learners Logbook that you will use to record evidence of your new skills/competence. As you demonstrate your new skills, record your activities and have your learning facilitator sign off on them. This will allow you to provide evidence of your competence when you are being assessed against the competency standard. b. Ensure that you have access to the facilities and equipment necessary for learning. c. Ensure that your learning resources are available. d. Ensure that you are wearing suitable clothing, that tools and equipment are safe, and that the correct safety equipment is used. e. Plan your learning programme (see below) f. Understand how to use this Learners Guide (see below)

Reference Points you to the reference materials and other support documents or resources used in compiling the unit content. Using the Computer and Other Resources Where your activities refer you to the library, computer and Internet resources, ask your learning facilitator to assist you with locating these resources. If you are getting your training in an institution, there may be a library and a computer laboratory. If this is not the case, visit the local library and find out what resources are available. If you are new to the computer and the Internet, someone in the computer room should be able to show you how to use these resources. Please note that in many of your activities you have been referred to information on the Internet. This is because the Internet has a vast amount of information that can help you in acquiring the particular competencies. We would like to advise you, however, that we cannot guarantee that all the sites will be available when you need them. Ensure that adequate storage facilities exist which will prevent deterioration and damage.

USING EQUIPMENT AND SAFETY DEVICES

The appropriate equipment and safety devices for particular workplace tasks and activities should be selected according to legislative and company/manufacturers requirements. The specification of the appropriate equipment and safety devices depend on the tasks to be performed. However, this information is usually provided before the task is undertaken.

REPORT WORKPLACE HAZARDS FOLLOW EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

LEARNING OUTCOME

As you go through this element you need to ensure that you acquire the required knowledge, skills and attitude to report workplace hazards and follow emergency procedures. Your learning facilitator is there to assist you through the various activities. Upon completion of this element you should be able to: 1. Identify workplace hazards during the course of work and reported to appropriate person according to standard operating procedures/factory act 2. Demonstrate means of contacting the appropriate personnel and emergency services in the event of an accident 3. Understand and carry out emergency and evacuation procedure when required

IDENTIFYING WORKPLACE HAZARDS

All workplace hazards encountered in the course of daily activities should be noted and reported to the appropriate personnel according to standard operating procedures. Hazards that may be encountered could include: Manual handling Hazardous materials and substances Noise Slips and falls Electrical usage, etc.

There are procedures outlined for reporting hazards. One example is as follows: 1. In the event of an accident/injury or hazard/near miss, staff are required to immediately report the incident to the Head of Division/Branch, School/Area, Department or Centre and the relevant area Safety and Health Representative. 2. The report must be made by completing the official Incident Report form available from the area Safety and Health Representative and ensuring that it is countersigned by the Head of Division/Branch, School/Area, Department or Centre and the relevant area Safety and Health Representative. 3. The report must be made by completing the official Incident Report form available from the area Safety and Health Representative and ensuring that it is countersigned by the Head of Division/Branch, School/Area, Department or Centre and the relevant area Safety and Health Representative.(iii) This report must be made regardless of whether or not the staff member who suffered the incident intends to claim Workers Compensation. 4. The completed and signed report form must be forwarded immediately to the Director, Workplace Relations/Work Environment Unit.

The appropriate personnel or services should be contacted in the event of a range of accidents including: Burns Poisons Broken limbs Eye accidents Spills Explosions Falls Electrical accidents

Means of communication with emergency personnel along with procedures and reasons for adopting standard procedures should also be identified.

ACTIVITY: Develop a feasible plan for effectively communicating with appropriate persons or services in case of a hazard. Include the means of communication, response mechanisms and management of the system. Present details of your plan to your learning facilitator.

CARRYING OUT EMERGENCY AND EVACUATION PROCEDURE

If an emergency occurs, emergency procedures should be followed. These procedures may include but not limited to the isolation of the following equipment: Electrical Mechanical Hydraulic Pneumatic Emergency Steam and water Oxy fuel

It is important that the evacuation procedures of a company is described and understood clearly by the workers in an effort to ensure that evacuation occurs smoothly and safely.
