PORTRA
It was dusk on a warm night at the beginning of September, and Adam Fearnall was standing in a throng of 5,000 students packed into Talbot Bowl. It was at that moment, immersed in a sea of excited, nervous, and extremely hormonal frosh, that he knew he would run for president of the University Students Council. It was the inaugural One Love Rally, an Orientation Week event put on by the USC to promote awareness of mental health issues on campus. Fearnall was struck by the sense of community that pervaded the crowd. That event said to some of those people, we know youre here, and its okay that youre here, and we want you to be here, he says. So I think it was then that I said, okay, maybe I can do thisI care enough about it to do this. Six months later, Fearnall was standing in another crowd, this time in the Mustang Lounge. The gruelling, drawn-out presidential campaign was finally over, and the election results were in. After a record-breaking 10,426 votes, it was officialAdam Fearnall had been elected president of the USC. Fearnall got involved early. As a teenager at Oakridge Secondary School in London, where his parents went before him, he led the student council as prime minister. He played sports, and even sang in a band, Cofield. His younger sister Lyndsay followed in his footsteps as deputy prime minister, and is now a firstyear English student at Huron University College, where Adam began

from what he knows. There was a boil-water advisory all the time, he remembers. Even after you boiled the water up there, it was still musty and brown. The experience was a formative one. Describing it, he is quiet and thoughtful, carefully considering his words. It gives you a different lens. Im not necessarily always looking through that lens, but I can look through that lens. He pauses. Its very hard to describe what it did to me, but I wouldnt trade it for anything. It was in Fort Hope that Fearnall truly learned to be patient. As the youngest of a handful of outsiders in the community, he says he wasnt trusted by locals at first, and had to earn their respect. You never really get to a point, I think, where you can be an authority, he says. You have to be patient. This patience was evident during his campaign, especially on the night of February 15. It was the second day of voting, and the results were due to be announced that nightbut at around 5 p.m., the board of governors decided the election was invalid due to a hack of the voting website the night before. While some candidates were upset and others angry, Fearnall remained calm in reaction to the unprecedented move.

his Western career. Shes had the unfortunate experience of having to follow me through two schools now, he laughs. Having been ambitious in high school, Lyndsay knew from the moment Adam moved in at Huron that he would be part of the Western community. All the sophs were there helping him move in and I said to him, Adam, thats going to be you, and it was, she says, remembering his first day. Hes one of those people that likes being involved and helping people. Hes always been that way. He wasted no time, meeting then-USC president Stephen Lecce
in his first week at Western. One of my friends knew Stephen, and he introduced me at the O-Week football game, Fearnall says. I remember him talking to me for almost a full quarter. Stephen was really good to me through my first year. Though Lecces encouragement helped, Fearnall already knew he wanted to go far. He joined the USC in first year and climbed the ranks, becoming Huron University College Students Council president in his third year, and USC speaker this year. It worked out, but it wasnt a perfect ascension or anything like that, Fearnall says of his rise to president. I had experiences along the way that made me want to keep doing it, and I had moments where I didnt really want to do it anymore. Lyndsay is only a little bit surprised at his most recent success. I didnt know hed go this far, she laughs, but I knew hed do something. The summer after his first year, Fearnall travelled to Eabametoong First Nation, also known as Fort Hope, to help run a summer literacy camp for children. The troubled community of about 1,500 sits on a lake in northwestern Ontario. Surrounded by bush and with only dirt roads, it is only accessible by airplane in the summer and by ice roads in the winter. Marilyn Bach, secretary of the board at Tourism Middlesex, has a different theory as to why the councillors rejected the proposal willful ignorance. Three times our tourism manager sent information relating to our funding application [...] Im not sure anybody read it, she said. But the county councils ruling is not the only unfortunate news for Tourism Middlesex. The Sand Plains Community Development Fund, a federal fund for communities in the region hurt by the downturn in the tobacco industry, is also no longer giving money to Tourism Middlesex. The fund began financing Tourism Middlesex when it was started two years ago. Their contract runs out at the end of March. Connor Hill

I was surprised, especially when they invalidated the results I thought he would have been fairly upset about it, says Lyndsay. You think that it would be upsetting to go through all that work, and have your team go through all that, but he reacted fairly well, she laughs. I didnt see any freak-outs, which was good. Even now, after having run a successful campaign, the 21-yearold president-elect remains humble. Six days after his victory, the stress of the campaign hasnt taken a visible toll on him, but perhaps hes just relieved its over. He appears relaxed and at ease, and despite his former-lead-singer status, there isnt a hint of the ego that normally accompanies that title his humility is almost disarming. There are people that Ill never be able to repay for the things that they did, for the amount of time they gave to me, he says of his campaign team. I sort of wonder, would I have been a big enough person to give one of my friends that amount of time to help them do something? At the end of the day, maybe you hope thats the answer in itselftheyre not just doing it for you, but maybe theyre doing it for something greater.

PostSecret is a community art project where people reveal their personal secrets on a postcard and send it to creator Frank Warren, who spoke at Western last night. While some of these secrets are light-hearted and amusing, there is a darker side to the project, which sees the focus sway from entertainment to dealing with mental health issues. For some people, these postcards are a way to share their innermost thoughts. But when does it become too personal? PostSecret is representative of our generations tendency to over-share. Its unlikely our grandma would reveal incestuous feelings on a 4x6 inch piece of decorated cardboard, yet todays generation gladly welcomes strangers into their minds. However, writing postcards may be therapeutic for the authors, and these secrets are often an artistic expression of the self. And although some might view this as only a pop culture gimmick, it cannot be denied that PostSecret has formed an online community, especially for those suffering from mental health disorders. PostSecret can also help alleviate the stigma associated with mental illness. It helps the audience understand and relate to those affected, offering up success stories to those who may still be struggling. PostSecret has been around for a number of years nowunlike other things on the Internet, the site has had a remarkable staying power. The reason for this may be entrenched in its sheer simplicityno topic is off limits, and postcards can be elaborate or simple. And of course, everyone has secrets, providing the site with endless content. There may also be a shallower reason behind its popularity. PostSecret creates the gawker effect the audience makes a spectacle of the abnormal, making people feel better about themselves, much like Texts From Last Night made us feel better about our own drunken debauchery. Still, the website has lost some of its authenticity recently. Instead of carefully and lovingly crafting secrets by hand, people are now encouraged to messily scrawl text over a photo they take on their phone, removing the artistic element of the project. The idea behind PostSecret should be commended, but were not sure if posting our deepest, darkest secrets to cyberspace contributes to the betterment of society, or of ourselves. explaining what I study, I mostly just trail off, either lying and saying, Media, information and technology or muttering, Oh, just, like, media studies. Perhaps the trouble lies not with the name itself, but with the large scope of the faculty. Some students study radio and television, some study advertising and public relations, while others study journalism and writing. What comprehensive term is there to sum up all these activities? Ill admit that Im not entirely sure, but I know theres no possible way its technoculture. Frankly, having a made-up word in your degree is embarrassing. While at an internship last summer with a pretty high-profile media giant, I was asked what I was taking at school. My response was met with blank stares and a few awkward chuckles. Techno-what? oft seems to be the trademark reply. To this extent, I feel like Western is doing a disservice to its student-body. If I was an employer sifting through hundreds of resums, Id be more inclined to go with the candidate whose qualifications I could understand such as a simply stated journalism or advertising and public relationsas opposed to the confusing amalgamation of two scholastic buzz-words. Even English is a step up. Sure, reading English on a resum might be a little bit of a let-down, but at least its in, well, English. I want a degree title that actually says something. Not a degree title that, much like a first-years essay on hegemony and agenda setting, pretends to say something while really saying absolutely nothing.

Genevieve Moreau PhotoGraPhy edItor Performance Openers Setlist Crowd Worth the cash Kelly Clarkson has come a long way since being judged onstage beside Justin Guariniand his hair. On Tuesday night, the original American Idol winner performed a sold out show at the John Labatt Centre as part of her Stronger tour, which kicked off in early January and features special guest Matt Nathanson. Even with battling a cold, Nathanson got audience members on their feet for his songs You Make My Heart Beat Faster and Come On Get Higher. However, his soft falsettos soon proved to be no match for Clarksons powerhouse vocal longevity. As Clarkson took over the stage with her first song Dark Side, fans screamed at her ability to hit
every note in key. She proved herself as one of the best in the industry as she performed her hits Behind These Hazel Eyes and Since U Been Gone with the help of her energetic band members and backup vocalists. She then pulled up a seat for intimate acoustic renditions of songs Einstein and I Forgive You. But Clarkson isnt just a singer. About halfway through her performance, she shared her passion for House of Hope Africa with a ballad about perseveranceYou Still Wont Know What Its Likeas images of the orphaned children she had recently met during her trip to South Africa appeared on the big screen behind her. Still, audience members didnt need to be hardcore Clarkson fans to enjoy the rest of the show, as she performed radio hit single Dont You Want To Stay, a song nominated for a 2011 Country Music Television Award in collaborative efforts with American country singer Jason Aldean, whose recorded image was projected onto a screen during the duet. With her glittery red sequined
microphone, Clarkson ended her performance with a Mr. Know it All and Miss Independent combo, showing off her effortless vocal range one last time. The last time Clarkson performed in London was in 2005, and the soulful R&B sound from her fifth fulllength album Stronger shows that not only can Kelly Clarkson sing about just about anything, but she can belt it out in front of a live audience.

the Western mustangs will take on the mcGill redmen in the Queens Cup tomorrow. the two teams met last year, with the redman emerging victorious by a score of 6-2.
Rundown >> mustangs mens hockey forward zach harnden has been named ontario University athletics player of the week > harnden scored the game winner against the Windsor lancers in game three of the oUa West finals.
The quarterback carousel is spinning again, and with two prized quarterbacks at the top of the draftAndrew Luck and Robert Griffin IIIthe teams vying for Mannings services will be limited to those without the pieces to trade up in the draft. Along with that, a few other
stipulations will leave some teams off of Mannings wish list, including staying clear of his younger brother Eli, playing in a dome or warm weather, playing for a contender, and potentially even staying clear of his nemesis Tom Brady. Assuming these are Mannings stipulations, I see two on his radar. The team that makes the most sense for both sides is the San Francisco 49ers. The addition of Manning would instantly make them Super Bowl favourites. Along with the 49ers, their division rivals
the Arizona Cardinals should be on Mannings radar. I would take the odds on Manning settling down in the hot heat of Arizona and throwing to the leagues best target, Larry Fitzgerald. With the addition of two more wildcards, along with the Houston Astros shift to the American League next season, do you think the National League will eventually adopt the designated hitter? Josh Raisin
Psychology IV
Baseball is steeped in tradition, but unfortunately, the differences between the two leagues will inevitably diminish within the next decade. Interleague play has killed the tradition of difference, and the competitive advantage created by the designated hitter forces stars over to the AL. It is an unfortunate reality for a game with such a rich history, but in order to uphold the competitive balance, the switch is inevitable.

Falling into the category of overall achievement, this weeks Purple Pipe is awarded to Lindsay Gidomski of the Mustangs womens hockey team. Gidomskis play was a major catalyst behind the Mustangs surprise run to the Ontario University Athletics final. Despite being seeded sixth out of eight teams in the playoffs, the Mustangs were able to navigate their way to the OUA finals. Along with being a low seed, the Mustangs were able to win their first playoff series in history. Gidomski, the product of Mississauga, led the OUA playoffs in goals with seven, while finishing second in overall scoring with nine points. Gidomskis play and veteran leadership were critical to her teams success, as she was one of the few fourth-year players on the squad. She helped set the tone in the first series, scoring a goal in each game of the Mustangs shocking first round sweep of the third seed University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Gidomskis stellar play continued into the second round as well. With the Mustangs backs against the wall in the second round of the playoffs, Gidomski delivered one of her best performances of the year. In a 6-2 victory for the Mustangs, Gidomski finished with a hat trick, tying up the series at 1-1. The next game, the Mustangs had a 3-0 victory behind another Gidomski goal, securing their first finals berth in history. In the finals, the Mustangs were swept 2-0 by the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, capping a fantastic run through the playoffs. Although the season ended in defeat, Gidomski, as well as the entire Mustangs team, can take pride in knowing they accomplished more than they ever had. Sean Morantz
