The Fundraising Has Begun!

Get ready! Get set! Sell! As of March 30th we have officially begun our first fundraiser event by selling Noble Popcorn. Forms and prize sheets were handed out, but if you werent there or need additional sheet please let me (Lt Brace) know ASAP! You all have a two week time period in which to sell as much as possible so lets all get out there and do what we can to help raise funds for the squadron. Dont forget that all funds raised will go towards fuel costs to get us to and from events (like Fly Ins and a future SAC Museum trip), rank and ribbons for achievements and promotions and other fun events and activities that we will be doing in the months to come. These funds are a vital part of what keeps us going and thriving so that we can give back to our communities, which is one of our primary missions.

Safety Br iefing Spr ing Home Chec k -Up

April showers may bring May flowers, but they can also bring leaky basements, moldy walls and costly cleanup. So when you start your Spring cleaning, don't forget to check the outside of your home to make sure it's protected from water damage and natural disasters. Regular maintenance on the outside of your home could save you thousands of dollars. Jeff Sciaudone, Director of Engineering for the Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) says, "You can take a few hours to do a Spring maintenance check -or you can wait for a storm to come along and show you where your home's weaknesses are." IBHS recommends all homeowners take the following steps: Make sure gutters are clean and stable. This ensures proper drainage and lessens the chance they will become flying debris in high wind. While you're there, examine facia or soffit boards. If they are rotting or soft, they may allow rain into your attic or atop interior walls. Make sure downspouts are sloping away from the house and carrying water at least five feet away from foundation walls. Lawn sprinkler heads should not spray the walls of the house. This moisture can lead to unwanted growths, wall failure and other destructive moisture problems. Examine your roof carefully, looking for worn, curled or missing shingles. If you can't inspect your roof easily, your attic is the next best place to check for problems. Look for moisture or surface discoloration -- and do this every time you go into the attic. The earlier you find a roofing problem, the better. Examine window and door flashing, seals or weatherstripping. If sealants around those openings are no longer pliable and continuous, reseal and caulk them. When planning home improvements, consider products and techniques that will increase your home's disaster resistance. Choose roofing materials, for example, that are rated for wind- fire- and impactresistance.

Awards & Promotions (continued)

During the Saturday meeting held on March 20th, we were pleased to have the following guests from Des Moines: Lt. Col Chilcote, Maj Chilcote, Lt Chilcote and Cadets Eimers. It was a beautiful day even if we did get more snow the night before. We brought the plane out and eventually moved it to its permanent home in hangar 3A, worked on some Drill & Ceremonies and received a tutorial on how to enter information into e-Services courtesy of Cadet Eimers. Speaking of Cadet Eimers, Id like to wish him congratulations on successfully testing and completing all requirements earning him a promotion to Cadet Lieutenant!

Mandatory Training Requirements

As most of you know, there are a few mandatory requirements in order to participate in certain activities. Since we are entering the busy part of the year with SAREXs, fly ins and all sorts of other events coming up its time to do a little detachment maintenance and get these items taken care of. The following is a list of things that need to be done and their corresponding web link. If you havent done them please do, soon, and if youre not sure if you need to do them just ask. OPSEC Aircraft Ground Handling - log into e-Services, on the left hand side click on CAP Multimedia, click on Video Courses, under Video Op tions click on View Video and then underneath the screen click on Take Test Equal Opportunity Training There are still a few of you yet who have not completed your CAPT 116. While this isnt required for general participation and training at the squadron level, it is required to participate in a SAREX and is a good way to become acquainted with the Emergency Services program and what we do. Please go online to take this test as soon as possible. CAPT 116

Squadron Safety Requirements

Because we are a VERY safety conscious organization, CAP has published a few safety based tests that are required to be taken by every member. Looking at my records I see that many of you have gotten at least some of them done, which is a great start, but I need to have all of them completed by each member. Basic Safety Course Basic ORM Intermediate ORM Advanced ORM To complete the tests, please click on their title above. You will need to read through a PDF or two on the subject and then take a short test. Once you have done this and gotten your certificate, please send me a quick email to let me know that you have done this so I can mark you off in my records. In addition to these 4 tests we also have been including a Monthly Safety Briefing in this newsletter. Attached to that is a 3-question test that we require to be done by all of our members. Our completion percentage is not so great right now and I want to see that go up, sp please be sure that you are reading page 2 and completing those 3 questions! Dont forget, safety is a daily requirement for us all, in everything we do. Being aware of our surroundings and potential hazards is key to staying safe.

Ft. Dodge SAREX May 1st

The second SAREX (Search & Rescue Exercise) of 2010 is fast approaching! Dont forget that if you want to go, you need to go here and sign-up no later than April 23rd. Once we have a headcount we will arrange for transportation. Since it is a long(ish) drive, we will be leaving on Friday night. Lodging arrangements will be made and we will let you know what those are as soon as they are finalized. There are a few requirements that members need to complete BEFORE they are able to participate in a SAREX and they are as follows: 1. complete your CAPT 116 2. complete OPSEC 3. complete Level I (senior members only) 4. attain your first achievement (cadets only) 5. BDUs are the required UOD for the day. If you do not have BDUs you can pick them up from places like the Hock Shop, or military surplus stores such as Canfields. If you absolutely cant get a hold of a set of BDUs, you can wear your Blues and work on the following SQTRs: MSA (mission staff assistant and MRO (mission radio operatoralso needs to complete their BCUT prior to the SAREX). If you have started work on a particular SQTR and that specialty needs any of the IS courses (100, 200, 700 or 800), you need to have these completed prior to going so that you are listed as a trainee for that specialty. If you need any of those tests, please get them taken care of as soon as possible! If you have any questions or are unsure of what exactly you need to have completed please let me know. Wed like to have as many of you attend as possible. Lets have an impressive showing from the Red Oak Detachment!

Red Oak (KRDK) Fly In May 2nd

The Red Oak Airport (KRDK) will be hosting their fly in on Sunday May 2nd from 7am to noon. Airport Manager Gail Ernst has asked the 072nd and the Red Oak Detachment to assist with crowd control and flight line marshalling. We have graciously agreed and are looking forward to the event as a chance to interact with the public, hone our flight line skills and assist the community that has helped us grow to where we are today. If youre available to come out that day and help out please wear your BDUs and bring a safety vest!

Event Sign Up Polic y

Dont forget that for any event which requires transportation to and from, generally anything other than a squadron meeting, I need you guys to sign up via an online form on our website. Why? We are a growing group and to make sure that everyone who wants to go can, and has transportation if they need it, I need to have a headcount at least a week prior to the event. How do I sign up? Check out the calendar on our website and down towards the bottom on the left hand side youll see a list of Upcoming Events. Click on the event and youll be re-directed to a sign-up form. Fill it out (before the deadline!) and youre good to go! After the deadline has lapsed well begin putting together transportation for those wanting to go and well inform you soon after about the arrangements. Dont forget, if you dont sign up well assume that you arent going.

Lear n to Lead: Cur r iculum Guide

To help senior members and cadet officers see the whole forest that is cadet leadership education, were publishing a Curriculum Guide for the upcoming Learn to Lead textbooks that launch this spring. The main idea behind the Curriculum Guide is to explain how four different arenas -- academics, activities, Air Force traditions, and staff service -- work together to transform cadets into leaders. To put it another way, leadership education is not merely studying a textbook, or merely drilling a flight, but an integrated curriculum. Leadership officers, DCCs, and others need to understand how CAP makes use of those four approaches in teaching leadership. Does this Curriculum Guide meet that need? Please sound off below and let us know.
