I B.Tech.(CCC) Supplimentary Examinations, June 2009 MECHANICS OF SOLIDS (Civil Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 100 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks

1. (a) Show that the dierence of principal strains = max shear strain. (b) Derive expressions for principal stresses in terms of principal strains, Poisson?s ratio modulus of elasticity. [8+12] 2. (a) Briey explain the max. principal stress theory.

(b) A certain type of steel has proportionality limit of 270N/mm2 (tensile), 60N/mm2 (tensile) and 30N/mm2 (compressive). Find the factor of safety according to max. principal stress theory. [8+12] 3. A steel shaft ABCD has a total length of 1metre made up as follows: AB = 200mm; BC = 300mm; CD = 500mm. AB is hollow, its outside diameter being 80mm and its inside diameter is d mm. BC and CD are solid, having diameters of 80 and 71mm respectively. If equal and opposite torques are applied to the ends of the shaft, nd the maximum permissible value of d for the maximum shearing stress in AB not to exceed that in CD. If the torque applied to the shaft is 3600N-m, what is the total angle of twist? G = 0.84 105 N/mm2 . [20] 4. Two co-axial springs, one placed inside the other and made of steel wires of the same dia. support an axial compressive load P on a rigid plate on the top of the springs. The number of coils in the two springs are 10 and 12 while the mean radii of the coils are 40mm and 60mm. Both the springs are of equal length before loading. Calculate P, if the wire dia. is 8mm and the shear stress in the wire is not to exceed 800N/mm2 . [20] 5. A cylindrical steel chimney 40m high, 2m external dia, thickness of metal 0.15m at base, is exposed to a horizontal wind pressure, whose intensity varies as the square root of the height above the ground. At a height of 16m above ground the intensity of wind-pressure on a at surface is 2.4kN/m2 . The self-weight of the chimney is 30kN. If the coecient wind pressure is 0.6, calculate the stresses at the base and sketch the variation. [20] 6. (a) Find the shear center for the section shown in gure 6a.

Figure 6b 7. Compare the values of max. and minimum hoop stresses for a cast steel cylindrical shell of 600 mm external dia. And 400 mm internal dia. Subjected to a pressure of 30N/mm2 applied (a) Internally and (b) Externally. [10+10]

8. A cantilever of span 600mm carries a load P at the free end. The section of the beam is rectangular 100 150mm. The load line is inclined at 450 to the vertical and passes through the c.g. of section. Find P if the max. Tensile stress is limited to 15N/mm2 . [20] 2 of 3
