I B.Tech.(CCC) Supplimentary Examinations, June 2009 MECHANICS OF SOLIDS (Civil Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 100 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks

1. (a) Show that the dierence of principal strains = max shear strain. (b) Derive expressions for principal stresses in terms of principal strains, Poisson?s ratio modulus of elasticity. [8+12] 2. (a) Neatly represent the max. strain - energy theory graphically.

(b) The principal stresses at a point in an elastic material are 2 (tensile), 1.5 (tensile) and (compressive). If the elastic limit in value of according to max. strain energy theory. [8+12] 3. Calculate the dia. of shaft which will transmit 50 H.P. at 150 R.P.M; if the shearing stress is limited to 50N/mm2 and the angle of twist should not exceed 10 in 2.5m length. N = 8X104 N/mm2 . [20] 4. A closely coiled helical spring is made out of 10mm dia. steel rod, the coil having 12 complete turns. The mean dia. of spring is 10mm. Calculate the shear stress induced in the section of the rod due to an axial load of 250N. Find also the deection under the load, energy stored in the spring and the stiness of spring. Take N = 8 x104 N/mm2 . [20] 5. An R.S.Tee-section, 150mm wide 75mm deep, thickness of ange 9mm, thickness of web 8.4mm, is used as a strut, 3 metre 4 long, ends hinged.Calculate the safe axial load by Rankine?s formula, using a factor of safety of 3. Rankines constants, f c = 315N/mm2 ; a = 1/ 7500. [20] 6. (a) Explain the method of sections. (b) Determine the axial force in each bar of the plane truss loaded as shown in Figure 6 by Tension coecient method. [8+12]

7. A thick cylinder having internal radius 200mm and external radius 300mm is subjected to 4N/mm2 . Find the internal pressure that can be applied if the max. permissible stress is 15N/mm2 . Find also the change in thickness of the cylinder. 1 [20] Take E = 200GN/m2 and m = 0.3 8. A cantilever consists of a 60 mm 60 mm 10 mm angle with the top face AB horizontal. It carries a load of 1 kN at 1 m from the xed end, the line of action of the load passing through the centroid of the section and inclined at 300 to the vertical. Determine the stresses at A, B and C and also the position of the neutral axis. As shown in the Figure8 [20]
