Whats Up With the Weather? In the previous film Wild Europe, our group learned that climate change is not man-made but a natural event that the earth experiences. However, in the documentary Whats Up With the Weather?, the different schools of thoughts were presentedthose who believe that climate change is man-made and those who believe otherwise. Scientists debate whether global warming is a natural phenomenon or an effect of various human activities. Skeptics argue that our present knowledge of the Earths climate causes computer models to overestimate the increase in global average temperature years from now. On the other hand, there are scientists who believe in the reliability of computer simulations and in the sufficiency of the data gathered in the past centuries to make a sound conclusion. Petroleum companies claim that the increase in CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, a result of their operations, is actually beneficial because it serves as fertilizers to plants and trees, which in turn moderates the net accumulation of atmospheric CO2. Upon considering the opinions based on research of said schools of thoughts, our group firmly believes that the continuing technological advances since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution has accelerated the increase in global average temperature. Given that it is so, connecting the acceleration of the adverse effects of climate change to man is only the tip of the iceberg. We believe that man, as it continually progresses, should discover means to control if not fix the situation. On a large scale man should further develop alternative and reusable energy sources and make it as less costly as possible, because it is due to the costly upkeep of said energy sources that keeps man in using fossil fuel-based energy. Cheap as it may be it the byproduct upon energy production contributes to greenhouse effect, and that byproduct is CO2 and as man ventures into doing so, on a smaller scale each and every one of us can help in reducing the adverse effects by reducing the so called carbon diet, we could do this by simply unplugging unused electrical appliances. The documentary serves as a wake-up call to all of us and it challenges us to act upon our current situation. The enormity of global warming can be disheartening but its never too late to do something about it. It is good to know the facts and be aware of our current condition. However, it is clearly not enough. We believe that with our sense of urgency and our own little ways, we can do something to save the environment .
