Chapter 19 tells as Jesus and His disciples passed through Jericho, they met Zacchaeus and went to stay

at his house. While they were there, Jesus told the parable of the ten minas to illustrate the need for good stewardship until the kingdom of God comes. This parable is about a king who had traveled to a far away country and called ten of his servants and gave each of them one mina. He told them to use the one mine and do business until he returns. The citizens of the king hated him and dont want him to be king. But the king finally won and received the kingdom. When the king came back, he asked his servants how much they gained by trading the one mine. One of the servants had earned 10 minas, another earned extra 5 minas. They were both told that they were a good and faithful servant and received a reward. One servant came and said to the king, Master, I know you are a strict man and therefore I had put the mina you give me in a handkerchief. I know that you reap what you did not sow and collect what you did not deposit. Here is your one mina. The king didnt like his response and told him he was an evil servant and his mina was taken away from him. After this parable, Jesus went up to Jerusalem and entered riding on a colt. While those around Him rejoiced at His coming, He wept over Jerusalem because of its coming destruction. Then He went into the temple and drove out those who were selling there. In Chapter 20, as He taught in the temple, His opponents challenged His authority, but He replied by asking about John the Baptists authority. Then He told the parable of the laborers in the vineyard illustrating Israels treatment of the prophets and soon-to-be treatment of the Son. In the parable, Jesus said that the kingdom of God is like an owner of the vineyard who went out to hire laborers to work in his vineyard. In the morning, the owner went out to find someone who would be willing to work in his vineyard for one denarius a day. From 3 oclock to 11 oclock, he went out again to hire some more people to work in his vineyard. When evening came, the owner of the vineyard calls in his servant and tells him to pay the workers their wages. All the workers from the first to the last one get one denarius for their wages. So they complained to the owner of the vineyard on why did he pay them all the same amount of money when in fact, they worked for more hours. And those whom he hired last and worked for only one hour got one denarius as their wages too. The owner of the vineyard replied, Didnt you agreed to work for me for one denarius? What is it to you if I wish to give the last man I hired for one denarius? So the last will be the first. Likewise, the first will be the last. The religious leaders tried to trap Him in His words; they asked whether it was lawful to pay tribute to Caesar or not and whose wife she would be in the resurrection if a

woman remarried according to the levarite law. After wisely answering these questions, Jesus asked how David could call his son Lord. In Chapter 21, Jesus observed the generosity of a poor widow who gave all she had to the temple. Then He warned His disciples concerning their coming persecution, the destruction of the temple, and the signs of His second coming. There will be signs in the heavens and on the earth and among the nations such as earthquakes, famines, wars, false prophets, persecutions, and an increase in wickedness. He admonished them to watch and pray that they may be able to stand. In Chapter 22, the feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover was drawing near, and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking a way to put him to death, for they were afraid of the people. Then Satan entered into Judas and he went to the chief priests and temple guards to discuss a plan for handing him over to them. They were pleased and agreed to pay him money. He accepted their offer and sought a favorable opportunity to hand him over to them in the absence of a crowd. Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, and He instructed them concerning His upcoming sacrifice with the cup and the bread. He told them that humility made one great in His kingdom. He predicted Peter would deny Him, and He warned them that they would need to travel prepared. Then He went to the Mount of Olives to pray, and there He was betrayed by Judas. Jesus said to the chief priests and temple guards and elders who had come for him, Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? Day after day I was with you in the temple area, and you did not seize me; but this is your hour, the time for the power of darkness. After arresting him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter was following at a distance. They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter sat down with them. When a maid saw him seated in the light, she looked intently at him and said that he was with Jesus. But he denied it saying that he doesnt know Him. The same instance happened 3 times, and Peter denied Him. Just as he was saying this, the cock crowed, and the Lord turned and looked at Peter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord. Peter went out and began to weep bitterly. The men who held Jesus in custody were ridiculing and beating him. They blindfolded him and questioned him. And they reviled him in saying many other things against him. In Chapter 23, Jesus was brought before Pilate, who found Him unworthy of capital punishment. Pilate nonetheless sent Him to Herod, who questioned Him and

then mocked Him, dressing Him in a royal robe. Jesus was returned to Pilate, who then told the crowd that he would punish Him and release Him. The crowd demanded that Pilate crucify Jesus, and he gave in. He was led away with two bandits and crucified. He was mocked, but one crucified with Him was yet admitted into Paradise. Finally Jesus gave up His spirit. His body was taken and laid in a tomb by Joseph of Arimathea. In Chapter 24, the women found the tomb empty on the first day of the week, and two angels proclaimed that He had risen. The apostles did not believe the women, but Peter ran to see the tomb. The same day, Jesus appeared to two disciples traveling to Emmaus, but they did not recognize Him until He broke bread with them. They raced back to Jerusalem to tell the others, and while they were still speaking, Jesus appeared among them. He taught them what the Scriptures said about Him and instructed them to stay in Jerusalem until they were clothed with power from on high. Finally, He ascended into heaven.
