1. There were two main political parties in Lincoln's time: the Democrats and the Republicans.

Lincoln was a Republican. Why do you think the Chicago Times might not be a Republican newspaper?

The Chicago times might not be a republican one because Wilbur F. Storey bought out the newspaper and supported the southern democrats.

2. Was the Patriot and Union correct in its prediction? Why or why not? Go back and review the Gettysburg Address. What did Lincoln have to say about his words? Was he correct in his own prediction? Why or why not?

In Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, the first sentance is prediction in the form of a propostition. Testing the proposition is the Civil War and the result of this was that the Union won the war, proving the proposition Lincoln had made. Also the Patriot and Union's prediction was wrong, they thought his speech was silly and easily forgettable.

3. Explain the tone of the Richmond Examiner and Providence Journal editorials. Remember that tone is the attitude conveyed by the writing.

The tone of the Richmond Examiner was that thye were not impressed at all with Lincoln's speech and thought it was mediocre. The tone of the Providence Journal, was that the speech was on e of the most magnificent things ever to be spoken and it had depth and deep understanding about it.

The brave men, living and dead who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. a. This line from the speech means that we are not worthy to dedicate anything to the field, the soldiers have already dedicated more than we could ever by dedicating their lives. b. It will inspire listeners to become more dedicated to something and to not just walk away and be done with it. 2. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion. a. Those few words mean that, now who is left from the battle have a job to do and should dedicate their lives to the cause of war for the men who gave their lives in hnor of the effort. b. This would inspire listeners to support the war effort and help win the battle against the Confederation. 3. ...this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth. a. This particular line from his speech represents the idea of a unified America, and that everyone will have a freedom as equal as any man.

b. This inspires listeners to fight against the confederate soldiers in an attempt to bring freedom to all.
