Wakefield and District Housing (WDH), a Registered Provider with more than
31,000 homes, opened the doors to Park Dale, the UKs largest zero carbon
housing development at the official launch event on 2 November 2011.

Working closely with community regeneration specialist Keepmoat and property
design and management consultants NPS, the pioneering 12 million project
consists of 91 homes to Level 6 of the Governments Code for Sustainable Homes.
From the outset Park Dale, in Airedale, West Yorkshire, was designed to offer a
realistic and affordable solution to achieve zero carbon at large scale.
To keep costs down, Keepmoat used block and brick work to achieve superior air
tightness, rather than the prefabricated methods of construction conventionally
used in zero carbon build. In turn, the use of traditional build methods has had a
beneficial impact on the local economy, maximising employment opportunities for
local trades people.
With part funding of 5.77 million from the Homes and Communities Agency, Park
Dale includes 71 homes for social rent and 20 for intermediate rent. Each of the
two, three and four-bedroom homes uses mechanical ventilation heat recovery
systems and has in-roof photovoltaic panels, superior levels of internal air tightness
and grey water recycling.
The homes draw heat from a district biomass heating system powered by renewable
wood pellets produced in Yorkshire from recycled pallets. The development also
includes a Learning Centre where residents can find out how to make energy
savings and take qualifications in energy management. Park Dale took 12 months
to plan and to coordinate the Code for Sustainable Homes submission. Work
started on site in March 2010.
Trades people from across Yorkshire have worked on the project, many of whom
learnt new skills in order to build to high standards of energy efficiency. More than
40 apprentices also gained eco-experience on the site during the build. Keepmoat
worked with WDH to explore and test renewable technologies to ensure products
chosen for Park Dale gave confidence and best value, factoring in long-term
maintenance costs.
Eco-features at Park Dale include:
Triple glazed windows -The size of the windows achieve excellent levels of
natural daylight while not exceeding a total Heat Loss Parameter of 0.8.
Mechanicalventilationheatrecoverysystems-Thesystemsusealowenergyfan
to feed fresh filtered air into live/work/sleep areas which has been pre-warmed
by recovering heat from the stale moist air pulled from kitchens, bathrooms and
other indoor wet areas.
District biomass heating system - Powered by
renewable wood pellets, the system will provide heating
and hot water for the whole scheme using a network of
underground distribution pipes.
High performance fabric elements - U values, which
measure how well a building component, e.g. a wall, roof
or a window, keeps heat inside a building, are typically
twice as good as building regulation specifications.
Superiorairtightness-Internalairtightnessof3.0@50
pascals and below - three times that required by building
regulations specifications.
In-roof photovoltaic panels - SAP calculations were
carried out to establish the photovoltaic requirement
for each plot. In-roof panels were chosen, which give a
better aesthetic, as they are more streamlined than on-
roof panels.
Greywaterrecycling-Wastewaterfrombaths/showers
is used to fill the cistern of the ground floor toilet.
Soakaway drainage - The substrata of the site is
limestone.Water permeability tests were carried out to
confirm the percolation rate. Water from highways and
the homes goes to soakaway drainage rather than the
pipework system.
Learning centre -Where residents can learn how to
make energy savings and understand the new eco-
features of their home, for example, taps run at a slower
discharge rate to save water.
Heating demand is expected to be one fifth of an average
home. Total energy bills are expected to be 40% less than
an average home and 25% less than a modern new build
home. Other benefits will include water bill savings from
lower water use fittings and grey water recycling, and the
potential to save more on bills by using appliances during
the day when the photovoltaic panels will power for free.
Energy use in all the properties will be monitored through
SMART meters, which will help assess where tenants can
make even more savings in the future.
WDH Chief Executive, Kevin Dodd, said: WDH is very
proud that we have created the UKs largest zero carbon
housing development. In addition to the creative look of
the homes, they offer fantastic savings on energy bills. The
entire project has had some outstanding benefits for the
local community, including the WDH apprentices who
learned many skills while working on the site.
Neil Baxter, Managing Director of Keepmoat delivery
company Bramall Construction, said: Park Dale has
changed the zero carbon landscape in housing. We are
proud to have worked in partnership with WDH and NPS
to achieve Code 6 at this scale.
We set out to deliver a cutting edge, large scale zero
carbon development, but also one that was realistic,
affordable and repeatable. Park Dale was designed to be
a mainstream development that can be replicated across
the country.
The use of traditional brick and block work not only
reduced costs but ensured investment in the local economy,
by providing employment on site and opportunities
for tomorrows generation of trades people through
apprenticeships.
Naz Parkar, Head of Area at the Homes and Communities
Agency, said: This step change in the way we provide
social houses shows what can be achieved with vision and
imagination. These houses not only provide local tenants
with homes they can afford but will help protect the
environment for future generations.
Richard Hodgson, Managing Director at NPS, commented:
In the light of recent and predicted increases in gas and
electric prices, NPS are delighted to be involved in the
design and development of Park Dale. As a result of its
innovative features, tenants will benefit from substantially
reduced energy costs and enjoy a better standard of living.
The new homes at Park Dale have proved extremely
popular with more than 3,754 expressions of interest
received, which equates to more than 40 expressions per
property. www.wdh.co.uk

QuArter is GrAnted
PLAnninG Permission
Planning permission has been granted for the Merthyr Learning Quarter Project (MLQ),
which is being designed by RMJMs London studio.
RMJM was commissioned in July 2010 to improve and expand the learning landscape in
Merthyr Tydfil through the redevelopment and expansion of the existing further education
college and the establishment of new facilities in the town centre.
The new 13,450 square metre college building will accommodate the curriculum areas
including science, ICT, technology, arts, hair and beauty, independent living skills, health,
catering, business, sports, public services, social sciences and humanities. The building will
also house a multifunctional sports hall designed to Sport England standards, along with a
nursery and learning zone.
The new building will be accommodated at the southern end of the existing college site,
which means that the current college building can remain in operation whilst the MLQ
is constructed. Once the new facility is complete, the existing college building will be
demolished and the land repurposed to create a college green that will facilitate teaching
and learning and provide a visual barrier between the College and the road.
A critical element of this regeneration initiative is the movement of the current sixth form
provision from across the five local high schools into the new MLQ facility, so that secondary
education, further education and higher education can be provided by the College. This
integration enables a broader spectrum of courses to be offered and the wider curriculum
will offer increased levels of opportunity, participation and aspiration.
It will open new pathways to learning and encourage individual growth through outreach
as well as creating an attractive and accessible focus for the town and surrounding district.
It is anticipated that a main contractor will be appointed in November 2011 with completion
of the new college building scheduled for autumn 2013. Demolition of the existing college
building and completion of external landscaping is scheduled to be complete by May 2014.
Stephen Cutler, project director at RMJM, said: The Merthyr Tydfil Learning Quarter is a
fantastic opportunity to create a striking new college, which will transform the lives of a
whole community of learners. It is also a remarkable opportunity to create an accessible,
attractive and memorable place for Merthyr Tydfil and the surrounding district.
The MLQ will be a potent force for regeneration and growth. It will be a focus for the
community, promoting outreach and attracting a broad spectrum of individuals, both young
and old, to experience a new way of learning, with a wide choice of programmes for study.
John OShea, Dean of Merthyr Tydfil College, said: The Merthyr Learning Quarter will raise
the aspirations of all our young people and the community in general and will make a real
contribution to the regeneration of Merthyr Tydfil as an attractive and vibrant place to live,
study and work.
The Merthyr Learning Quarter is being funded by the Welsh Government and is to achieve
BREEAM Excellent rating as a minimum.
It is a joint venture initiative between Merthyr Tydfil College, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough
Council and the University of Glamorgan. www.rmjm.com

Environments dont come much busier than a brand-new, state-of-the-art
secondary school in West London which is why Hammersmith Academy features
two 13-person Stannah Xtralift passenger lifts to help bring access between four
floors for school personnel and mobility compromised users, including students.
With circa 780 students, staff and visitors to cater for on a daily basis, democratic
movement between all facilities is vital for this non-denominational, all-ability, co-
educational school and 6th form specialising in Creative and Digital Media and IT.

Operating over a distance of 13.2m each, the lifts feature plasticised, light-grey
walls, Domino suspended, downlighter-effect ceilings, and stainless-steel consoles,
skirtings and car doors. Door-size graphics G-1-2-3 printed on the external lift
doors make the lifts easily located at each floor; and swipe-card access ensures that
they can only be accessed by card-carrying users.
The Xtralifts were specified by Nathan Beevers, Associate of BHM Associates, a
London architect practice with a pedigree in designing Academies:As with all such
projects, Hammersmith Academy demonstrates our response to the physical and
emotional demands of the environment. In both product and performance, Stannah
has supported this ethos and made a significant contribution to the efficiency and
good health of the school. Having used Stannah on numerous projects we knew
they would perform well from initial consultation to installation, commissioning
and after-care.
Stannahs Xtralift range is designed for busy surroundings to carry more people
a little faster and a little higher. A super-efficient, oil- and vibration-free, gearless
traction drive ensures a smooth ride with low noise, energy use and running costs.
Compact controls located at the top of the shaft save space; and fast, efficient
installation is ensured by a modular structure and unique rail system giving
precision, durability and reliability.
Available in models up to 33 persons, with many features, finishes and options,
Xtralifts comply with EN 81-1, CE marked and in full compliance with The Lift
Directive 95/16/EC; and ensure that Hammersmith Academys owners meet the
requirements of the Equality Act 2010.
The Xtralifts are serviced by the London and South East branch of Stannah Lifts
Services, a nationwide network providing 24 hour, 365 days a year support. This
covers service, repair, modernisation and refurbishment of all types of lifts, stairlifts,
escalators and moving walkways not only those from the Stannah product range,
but also other lift manufacturers equipment. Stannah also offers a bespoke lifts
service, custom-building lifts to meet customers specific requirements.

GrAnite trAnsFormAtions tumbLes
into 2012 with beth tweddLe
Kitchen worktops specialist, Granite Transformations, has
celebrated Olympic year by creating a Union Jack-adorned island
unit, clad in its tough, hardwearing, diamond-polished material. It
then invited Britains top gymnast, Beth Tweddle, to show off its
patriotic piece by performing a series of rhythmic routines on and
around the unit. As a test of the materials strength and resilience,
Beths energetic vaulting, tumbling, jumps and acrobatics put it
through its paces, although Granite Transformations would expect
far more severe treatment in normal household and commercial
use, on kitchen worktops, bar counters, tiled floors, shower
surrounds and elsewhere.
The authentic Union Jack design, which is twice as wide as it
is high, was achieved using a high tech water jet cutter, which
sliced through the material with a high velocity mix of water and
abrasive particles, to produce the various component triangles
and quadrilaterals. These were seamlessly abutted together and
bonded onto construction board, creating a countertop measuring
2m x 1m. The unit is finished with 80mm deep edge strips,
featuring a 3mm pencil round profile, and double-faced waterfall
ends to create a rigid 90cm high structure that could be at home
in a sizeable kitchen, sports club, recreational centre or licensed
premises.
Rather than adhere to traditional red, white and blue, Granite Transformations chose muted white
Cristallino, slate grey and blue steel finishes from its Trend G recycled glass collection, to introduce
a designer look. Made from post-consumer recycled wine, beer and mineral water bottles, with an
element of polymer resin for strength and a patented Flexiweb backing for flexibility, it outperforms
most other finishing materials like natural or engineered stone and solid synthetics.
But what made this whole exercise possible, is the distinctive slimline profile and exceptionally light
weight of Granite Transformations surfaces. Had it been made from solid granite or stone, the unit
would have been far too heavy to be moved and displayed around the country, nor would it have the
inherent flexural strength to withstand Beths energetic, flying gymnastic routines.
Three-times World, six-times European and seven-times National champion, making her Britains most
successful gymnast of all time, Beth Tweddle was photographed in a state-of-the-art infinity studio that
allowed the full height and breadth of her fantastic gymnastic feats to be captured. She was suitably
impressed with the quality of finish and sophisticated looks of Granite Transformations one-off Union
Jack unit and took time out to admire the latest iGranite app, which previews how its whole range of
granite, quartz and recycled glass worktops could look in any kitchen.
Granite Transformations wishes Beth all the best in her Olympic endeavours and will be displaying her
acrobatic images in all of its UK showrooms. www.granitetransformations.co.uk

Smart Architectural Aluminium has
announced that they are to exhibit at this
years Ecobuild Exhibition, held at London
Excel from 20th to 22nd March. This will
be the first time that the South West based
systems supplier has been involved with the
show, so why chose to this year to exhibit?
Eddie Robinson, Smarts Managing Director
explains, Like Ecobuild, Smart has grown a
great deal in the last two years. This event provides an ideal platform to talk to the industry about where we are now and where we are planning to be in
the future. We have three strong messages that are very relevant to both sustainable building and the Ecobuild audience. First is our corporate commitment
towards the environment and to work towards a 100% carbon neutral production operation. Second, the energy efficiency savings our products offer
through improved thermal performance, and lastly is the sustainable nature of aluminium as a construction material. As a leading systems supplier, we fully
recognise our responsibility towards protecting the environment and also to minimising the impact of our activities. We take this commitment very seriously,
which is why we are the first systems company to operate and maintain ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001 Environmental Management
Systems and BS OHAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety accreditations.
Smart will also be exhibiting a selection of their latest energy efficient profile systems. Among these will be Greenstar, an ultra low U value commercial
window capable of achieving a U value of 1.0 W/mK. Visitors will also be able to view the Alitherm 800 W.E.R. A rated window. The Evolution steel
replacement window that is ideal for large scale heritage applications. Smart will also be exhibiting their unique Smart Wall thermally broken, shop-front
screen and door. Smart Wall is the UKs first fully-thermally broken shop-front system and also the first fully thermally broken aluminium door to be
successfully security tested to LPS 1175 level 2 and EN 1627 level 3. Visit Stand N210 in the North Hall at Ecobuild. www.smartsystems.co.uk

Liquid waterproofing specialist Kemper System will be exhibiting at Ecobuild
for the first time this year (Stand S2016) as part of a strategic marketing
communications drive to educate the marketplace about its eco-friendly and
effective roofing solutions.
The move follows the growing success of the companys innovative Kemperol
2K-PUR solvent-free system, the first solvent-free wet-on-wet cold liquid
waterproofing system available on the UK market. Based on an 80% castor-
oil formulation derived from sustainable sources, the liquid system also
incorporates a flexible non-woven fleece manufactured using a 25% recycled
plastic bottle content.
Offered with a 20-year warranty, the ground-breaking system offers
exceptional, durable waterproofing, that bonds to almost any substrate to
create a totally seamless, monolithic, U/V stable, elastomeric membrane that
cannot delaminate. Kemperol 2K-PUR offers an effective solution for both
new builds and refurbishment projects. As it is solvent and fume-free there is
no need to evacuate occupied buildings, allowing work to continue without
disruption. The waterproofing system can be applied on top of most existing
roofing material so can even help to prevent excessive waste being sent to landfill. Kemper Systems stand will offer visitors an opportunity to watch video demonstrations of
how the system is applied and see the results on recent high profile projects including Londons Guildhall. And they will also be able to learn more about its suitability for a wide
variety of applications including a root resistant base for green roofs and living wall projects and a waterproofing material for wind turbines. Alongside the Kemperol 2K-PUR
system, Kemper System will also be exhibiting its Stratex Warm Roof System; a completely integrated warm roof system that incorporates primers, vapour barrier, insulation and
waterproofing with a range of optional surfacing. Featuring a rigid PIR insulation board with a unique tongue and groove interlocking joint, the system significantly reduces cold
bridging and gives a much smoother surface finish. www.kemper-system.com/UK/eng

Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) has completed the delivery of a major
mechanical and electrical (M&E) scheme at Crown Woods College, in Greenwich,
demonstrating the multitude of advantages that offsite prefabrication can bring to enable
a more sustainable, safer and efficient way of delivering building services solutions.
Designed by Nicholas Hare Architects and built by main contractor Balfour Beatty, the
new 48 million secondary school, part of the Phase One 100 million Greenwich
Council Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme, features nine buildings linked by
external covered walkways. The facility has been organised into three colleges or ''schools
within a school" with 450 pupils each. In addition there is a post 16 college that will
also accommodate 450 students. At Crown Woods College, BBES Modular Systems +
division has designed and supplied multi-service 3D corridor modules that incorporate
full M&E services as well as operating as air conditioning ducts for the classrooms. Lined
with acoustic foam, the air path fulfils the design noise criteria to create an ideal learning
environment for this cutting edge new facility.
Using the latest lean construction methods and off-site fabrication techniques, BBES has
delivered the completed 3D modules and modular risers installed on site for an efficient
and safe installation. Manufactured by BBES at its Modular Systems + facility, this allowed
site construction to run concurrently, making significant savings on the project timeframe.
Utilising the innovative methods of the Modular Systems + facility in Wednesbury, BBES
is able to maximise project efficiency whilst ensuring quality management is maintained
throughout each process. The modular arrangement also eliminates material wastage,
helping to maintain projects sustainable targets and provide significant cost and time
benefits compared to traditional installations.
Through a series of workshops we worked with the design team, the architect Nicholas
Hare Architects LLP and BBES project team to engineer the ideal solution for the services
and air circulation components, commented Mark Hammonds of BBESs Modular Systems
+.By utilising an offsite prefabrication approach we have been able to deliver components
in a much more efficient, sustainable and safer way.
We are continuously improving and developing ideas from previous projects and the team
is currently discussing further use of modularisation at further Greenwich Building Schools
for the Future projects, including Plumstead Manor and Eltham Hill Schools. Despite being
a mix of new build and refurbishment, the plan is to maximise modularisation on these
schemes to help achieve Zero Harm strategy, commented BBESs Project Manager Simon
Stothard.
The successful completion of the Crown Woods College project further demonstrates
BBESs ability to deliver complex M&E schemes safely, efficiently and sustainably whilst
meeting targeted occupation dates. www.bbsel.com

Gilgen Door Systems has supplied and installed an elegant curved sliding door at Tate St Ives, as part of the refurbishment of
the main entrance.
Working with London based Evans and Shalev Architects and the gallery, Gilgen supplied a curved sliding door together with an
internal single sliding door. The specification required a practical door solution which not only allowed exceptional pedestrian
throughput, but would also blend seamlessly with the existing elegant, curved facade and upper level architectural glass features
of the building. Additionally, the outer doors were required to withstand hurricane force Atlantic winds and the affects of salt
water. Gilgen recommended an external curved sliding door and an internal single sliding door to replace the existing swing
doors to fully meet the criteria.

ArChiteCturAL ChALLenGe At tAte st iVes
The bespoke curved sliding door was manufactured to fit the
existing building faade and installed to enclose the existing
porch area of the entrance. The striking, 3m x 3m all glass,
convex curved sliding door has a radius of 6.3m giving a clear
walk through area of 3.2m enabling visitors to pass through with
ease, even at extremely busy times.
Gilgen also recommended laminated glass and a marine paint
finish to withstand the affects of the weather and salt water
and installed a special Y designed tracking system to enable the
stone paving to be laid right up to the doors. The existing swing
doors have been replaced with a single sliding door. This door
also maximizes the clear walk through area of the doorway
and provides a comfortable inner entrance for visitors. Both
installations fully meet BS7036 regulations and requirements
under the Disability Discriminations Act.
The Gilgen SRM curved sliding door is available in either convex
or concave configuration with radii to meet any specification.
They can be supplied in full or half circle configurations and the
self supporting steel structure guarantees seamless integration
into existing architecture. Safety features include auto-reverse
and safety stopping mechanisms and fail safe functions open
the door in the event of an emergency making it suitable for
emergency exit routes.
The SLX sliding door system is technologically advanced, ensuring
safety, reliability and practicality. Both systems exceed current
industry legislation, meet BS7036 and requirements set out in the
Disability Discrimination Act.

Critics of living wall systems who claim that living
walls are too vulnerable and are not truly sustainable
are wrong, says Sean Farrell of Mobilane. The
comment comes as Mobilane celebrates six years
without a single failure for its WallPlanter system
across Europe, which was launched in 2005.
The market for living walls is relatively new, yet has
suffered negative publicity due to the failure of a
few high profile examples. However, criticism fails
to take into account the development of successful
systems which are robust, efficient and sustainable and
which are supported by warrantees and maintenance
packages.
One of the highest profile WallPlanter living wall
system thrives at the O2 arena in London. The wall,
which is one of the biggest in the country, was installed in January 2007 and is a verdant testament to the viability of well designed and maintained living walls. To
date, none of the plants have needed to be replaced.
Mobilane recently introduced the LivePanel modular system, which has been developed with a view to ensuring a lightweight construction suitable for all buildings,
together with an environment and substrate in which plants can thrive. LivePanel presents the market with the most flexible system for decorating exterior or
interior walls with a wide range of plants. LivePanel consists of individual sections which are fixed to the wall or building using a lightweight aluminium frame. These

Superglass, the UKs leading independent manufacturer of glass fibre insulation
solutions, today announces that it will commence a 6.5m capital expenditure
programme at its Stirling manufacturing plant in March next year with completion
scheduled for March 2013.The investment will substantially improve the operating
efficiency of the plant and increase production capacity. It involves phased
upgrades and modifications to existing machinery in seven different process
areas and, once fully implemented, has the potential to deliver aggregate annual
operating cost savings of up to 3.6 million.
The expenditure will also improve product quality, increase production capacity
and increase product compression. The funding for the capital investment
programme was obtained following the completion last week of an 8.0m
equity fundraising and a capital restructuring which reduced bank debt to 5.1m.
Scottish Enterprise also awarded Superglass a Regional Selective Assistance grant
of up to 2 million.
Superglass Chief Executive Officer Alex McLeod, said The capital expenditure
programme is much needed and will substantially improve the manufacturing
capability and competitiveness of our plant. We have identified a number of
areas where we can upgrade our processes and equipment to deliver real
operating efficiency gains and combine that with improved product quality for
our customers. Our plant is currently operating at near to full capacity on some
product lines and this investment will provide us with the ability to increase
output by a further 10 per cent once completed. www.superglass.co.uk

been optimized on the site to provide owners, engineers, contractors and
industry bodies and associations with key insight into Victaulic solutions,
including safety, reliability and productivity.
The new website was designed with great engagement from customers
across the globe and across industries where we operate, said Eric Luftig, director of marketing, communications and training with Victaulic. With
improved server and hosting capabilities, customers will have quick, reliable and easy access to information about the products and services offered
by Victaulic facilities located around the world. The new design integrates with social media and real time news, and can be accessed through mobile
devices and popular tablet formats.
Founded in 1925,Victaulic has its global headquarters located in Easton, Pennsylvania, United
States. Victaulic has 11 international manufacturing facilities and 20 major distribution hubs,
and employs more than 3,500 people worldwide. Victaulic develops products and services
for some of the world's most demanding markets, including oil, gas and chemical; mining;
power generation; water and wastewater treatment; and military and marine systems; as
well as commercial building and fire protection applications. Victaulic products are available
in 103 countries. A mechanical joint is comprised of four elements: grooved pipe, the
coupling housings, a pair of nuts and bolts and the rubber gasket ring. This gasket is pressure
responsive and is encased by the coupling housing when it engages in the groove around the
circumference of the pipe. The gasket then creates a seal unified joint that is enhanced when
the system is pressurized.
The Victaulic system provides many mechanical design features that are useful in systems
exposed to earthquake conditions. The flexibility of Victaulic flexible grooved-pipe couplings
reduces the transmission of stresses through a piping system, while the gasket damps vibration. When flexibility is not desired, rigid couplings
can be used. Both flexible and rigid couplings provide discontinuity at each joint, which helps minimize pipeline stresses generated during seismic
movement. www.victaulic.com

The Bull Ring Shopping centre is an iconic building and was redeveloped in
2003. Thai restaurant group Chaophraya have opened their latest restaurant
in the shopping centre under the name Choababy and installed Solarlux SL82
folding doors at the front of the restaurant so that the diners can use the
terrace area as well in summer. The high insulation values ensure that diners
are warm in winter too.
The SL82 was launched in 2009 and is an entirely new all-aluminium system
which takes folding doors to the next level and sets a new benchmark for
the folding door market.
The overall impression that the SL82 achieves is of one harmonious glass
effect due to the exterior glazing overlapping the frame profile creating the
overall glazed effect and yet the visible frame retaining the glass is only 8mm
thick. The profile is a strong multi cavity, thermally insulated with 4 fold rolled-
in insulation bars. With double or triple glazing, of the customers choice, the
unit offers the best possible heat insulation and has a u value of 1.2Wm2K.
Panel sizes can be up to 1000mm wide x 2500mm high. Floor tracks can either
be surface mounted or flush which allows easy access. For added security it
has the Solarlux multi-point locking system. The aluminium can be powder
coated to any RAL colour.
The SL82 has also been awarded the prestigious reddot design award in 2010
and the iF Design Award also in 2010. The SL82 is suitable for Commercial
facades, Domestic living areas,Wintergardens or faade designs.
This is just one system from a family of over 18 folding door styles that
are suitable for installations ranging from Balconies to high end domestic
applications. www.solarlux.co.uk

an ES 200 sliding automatic operator from DORMA. The
deep plan buildings design incorporates natural lighting

Steel windows occupy a special place in British architecture. Forged in the heat of
the Industrial Revolution (and indeed widely used in many Victorian mills) they
represented a leap forward in window design and manufacture. Robust, slender, durable
and relatively inexpensive, steel windows went on to become a familiar feature in the
British streetscape.
The first metal windows were made from wrought iron by Mediaeval blacksmiths who
produced sub-frames to hold leaded stained glass or clear glass within the masonry
or wood reveal. These were expensive and mostly used in ecclesiastical buildings or
the grand houses of the ruling elite. Not until the 18th century were metal windows
available on an industrial scale, this time made from cast iron. But these too were
expensive and not widely used.
Steel was therefore the first modern material to become widely used as an alternative
to timber in window frames. The ability to mass-produce steel frames made them an
economical choice in large buildings and housing developments and by the end of the
First World War they had become a popular and widespread choice throughout Britain.
Steel was also the high tech option for window designers. Not surprisingly, they
became a favourite of architects of the Modernist and Art Deco schools during the
years between the First and Second World Wars.
The development of plate glass in the early 1920s made it possible to produce large
single panes which, with slender steel frames, allowed the manufacture of the first large
picture windows. Steel frames soon became a defining characteristic of the Art Deco
period and in the UK had a profound effect on house design as well as the design of
public buildings.
Typical of this period are straight, white-rendered house frontages rising to flat roofs,
sharply geometric door surrounds and tall steel windows, including convex-curved
metal corner windows.
Many buildings of the Art Deco and Modernist schools would be unthinkable re-
fenestrated in any other material. Steel windows are a defining feature of many icons of
Deco architecture including BBC Broadcasting House, the old Daily Express Building
in Fleet Street and Perivales famous Hoover Building. Steel windows were also
indispensable to the founders of Modernism - Le Corbusier,Walter Gropius and Ludwig
Mies van der Rohe and feature in many public buildings, most notably Gropius famous
Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany.
Today, steel windows are still popular with architects and designers in both the residential
and commercial building sectors. Galvanised (as all steel windows have been since the
1950s) they are extremely rust-resistant and todays polyester powder-coatings mean
they require minimal maintenance and will not need painting for at least 20 years.
Modern steel windows comply with the latest Building Regulations on thermal resistance
and are supplied double - or triple-glazed to meet the most exacting requirements.
Steel has the advantage of a relatively low carbon-footprint and is completely recyclable.
Todays steel windows are as suitable for refurbishment and restoration projects as they
are for new-build schemes. Not only are they a prerequisite for many listed buildings,
particularly of the inter-war years but they can provide a modern energy-efficient
replacement option for many older buildings for example as a discreet sub-frame in
stone-mullioned leaded windows where an opening casement is desired.
The unique profile of steel windows create such a distinctive aesthetic that their
removal and replacement with inappropriate windows drastically changes the overall
appearance of the building. As a common feature of the British streetscape the steel
window occupies an important place in our built environment.

Quantum is a specialist division of St Gobain set up to promote a famous five of artistic
architectural glasses and D R Services is a UK partner. High tech glass like Priva-Lite,
which changes from clear to obscure at the flick of a switch, have been available for some
time, but up until now they been marketed for their cientific or technical performance. It's
been a question of engineer speaking to engineer.
What Quantum Glass and D R Services are now doing is moving the market from the
technical to the artistic, since the products are well proven. It's no longer a question of
showing how they work but now it's a matter of how beautiful they are and what they
can add to the aesthetics of a building. The link between the five exotic Quantum glasses
is that each one of them is in some way electrically or solar activated and they can be
used in the fabric or the interior design of a building. Thermovit, an electric glass radiator,
consist of a glass sandwich including a metallic coating and pvb foil, which creates heatable
mirrors and glass panels.
Simply apply a current to the glass and it radiates warmth. Since it has no moving parts or
energy transfer points, it is 100% efficient: making it probably the most environmentally
sensitive rad ever, especially if the electricity source is from wind generation or a solar
panel. It is ideal for use in the bathroom as a towel warmer or for disguising a rad.
Take it one step further and Thermovit can be integrated with Mirastar so you have a
toughenable mirror radiator. Quantum Thermovit works with an ordinary mains supply
(220-240v) and can be regulated by a programmable thermostat. Ideal applications would
include luxury homes, spas and fitness centres as well as verandas and winter gardens.
D R Services has been installing Priva-Lite (the glass that flicks from transparent to
obscure when privacy is required) in the UK for nine years. It's a remarkable product,
and many need to see it to believe it really can switch from clear to opaque simply by
adding an electric charge. It consists of a sandwich of extra clear glass, plastic and liquid
crystal films. When a 50 volt current is switched on via electrodes, the milky film instantly
becomes transparent.
It makes an ideal glass lavatory door since it reassures that the cubicle is clean before you
get there and can then be switched to ensure privacy. There is no chance of a breakdown
accidentally compromising a loo user since the default state (with electricity off) is opaque.
Apart from bedroom, bathroom, dining room and kitchen applications it could also create
a very interesting partition for an office or restaurant as well as street furniture and
artwork. Glass buildings can now be transformed at the flick of a switch.
E-Glas can convert solar power into heat and reflect it outside. One good reason for
wanting to do that is to prevent snow from lying, since it is going to melt when it touches
the warmed glass. Used in double glazed units, it can play different roles depending on
how it is positioned. If the double glazed unit has a hot glass on the outside it melts snow
particularly on roofs and if the heated glass is on the inside, it reduces condensation,
particularly useful in swimming pools. Quantum E-Glas can produce up to 600 watts
of heat in each square metre. This can be used in lieu of traditional heating, particularly
underfloor heating or low pressure hot water systems. It can also be used to radiate
warmth to verandas, glass domes, display cases and picture windows.
doorS, WINdoWS & GlazING
Planilum is described as an active glass panel, a light source that can be touched
because it is more like a green, energy saving light than an old fashioned hot bulb. Using
fluorescent lighting technology, illuminated panels can be created that free architects
and building designers from the normal constraints. It comes in standard sizes and can
be used architecturally to emit light from walls, coffee tables dividers between rooms
and also very large atria making large glass structures.
It's even possible to have sculptures that are hung from a ceiling that radiate light. It is
as efficient as a standard fluorescent tube (since it uses the same technology) so you
could call it a green product. Like Thermovit it consists of a sandwich of glass, but this
time there is an electrode, plasma and a light emitting face.A specially designed coating
emits the light just where you want so your picture or your coffee table becomes your
light. Quantum Planilum is ideal for hotels, restaurants, lounges, boutiques, corporate
headquarters, theatres and up market homes.
It has a low eco footprint and incredible stability over time (it's very long lasting).
Quantum LED in GLASS is, as you would expect, glass containing red, green and blue
Light Emiting Diodes (or LEDs), the idea being to bring the panel to life. Applications
are virtually limitless, including illuminated glass floors and animated glazing panels.
LED in Glass is a method of producing light from a sheet of glass by screen printing
onto one side white ceramic ink dots that get larger as you get further away from
the LEDs. The LEDs, on one or both sides of the glass, emit light into the thickness
of the glass and as the light travels through it comes across the white screen printed
dots which create a light show. Although you can create the full spectrum, the result
is sweeps of colours a bit like the light show in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
The Quantum range of artistic architectural glasses will be available for inspection and
hands on demonstration at the Building Centre in Store Street, London. There is also
a dedicated Quantum web site at www.quantumglass.com.
D R Services is a Quantum partner for the entire product range but there will also be
specialists who will only cover one or two Quantum products. Planilum could be sold
by lighting companies, Thermovit by heating companies. Although some might think
this is not the best time to be promoting a range of up market exotic glasses, D R
Services Director David Jarvis disagrees.

"If you get yourself established during a quiet period," he said, "as things begin to hot
up you are established and ready to go. If you wait for the market to get going you
could miss the boat." www.drservices.co.uk

Italian designer tiles specialist Trend has created an innovative new
iPad app that allows you to preview how living rooms, bedrooms,
bathrooms, kitchens and swimming pools can be transformed, with
its handcrafted glass mosaics, unique decorative wallpapers and
luxurious agglomerate finishes.
Envisaging how new mosaic surfaces and slab finishes will look is
always difficult, especially as the product samples are often small
and the finishes so long lasting, meaning that its important to get it
right from the start. So the latest iTrend app allows you to visualise
exactly how different combinations of colour and pattern will appear,
resolving any lingering doubts and possibly saving unnecessary
expense, by eliminating unsuitable choices.
In addition to storing a whole library of typical room and exterior
layouts, which are useful when planning decorative themes for a
new home, this exclusive app technology allows you to file images
of your very own living spaces, if youre intending to refurbish or
embellish existing dcor. Thus, it offers the sheer novelty of being
able to photograph any space in and around the house, using a digital
compact or in-built iPad 2 camera, then previewing how it would
look with new mosaics and agglomerates on the floor, walls, ceiling
or feature panels.
With iTrend, which is available as a free download from the iTunes
App Store, its possible to customise stored images with a few simple
and intuitive touchscreen strokes. Having called up the master
design screen, you tap on the finishing material you want to work
with, choosing between mosaic tiles, studio-designed mixes, shading
blends, glass tile wallpapers and agglomerate slabs. After scrolling
through the colour options in the chosen collection, you trace over
the feature to be changed with a fingertip, immediately customising that part of the image. By experimenting with different
combinations of materials and colours, its possible to preview the finished overall appearance, whether its a living room
interior, swimming pool surround or designer wetroom.
The iTrend app lets you browse through a complete palette of mosaic and agglomerate finishes from the current Trend
range, which can also be previewed at the Trend website as an online master catalogue. Embedded in the iPad app are high
resolution product images from the entire 2cm x 2cm glass mosaic collection, including the 24 carat gold Aureo line, as well as
predefined colour mixes and graduated shading blends from the Italian design studio. Also available on the touchscreen menu
are Trends exclusive glass mosaic wallpaper designs and the complete choice of agglomerate colours in diamond-polished
and matt finishes.
The HD previews seen on screen are remarkably faithful to the end result and your design concepts can be shared with
friends, family, interior designers and tiling contractors, as an email attachment. A growing number of Trend stockists is
equipped with iPad tablets loaded with the iTrend app, so will be able to demonstrate the application, price up your ideas and
carry out the final installation work, linking touchscreen to touch and feel.
The iTrend app can be downloaded free from the Lifestyle category of the App Store at http://itunes.apple.com/gb and a

timoLeon uFCh For the retreAt
On a secluded rural site near Newton Abbot in Devon known as The Retreat
local lore claims that it was once used by nuns there now stands a stylish,
modern, seven bedroomed, two-storey home. Being a new-build property the
owner sensibly specified that his home should have water and central heating
from renewable sources and the architects design included central heating
from a ground sourced heat pump, with solar panels providing boosted heat
for the hot water system.
Under-floor heating, being at the comparatively low temperature ideally suited
for use with heat pump generation, was a natural choice and the owner called
on Timoleon to design a UFCH system for the whole of The Retreat, which
was then installed by J.P.Woollacott Plumbing & Heating of Torquay.
Timoleon, specialists in bespoke under-floor heating systems, provided our
Staple System for the ground floor where a screeded base made it the
optimum choice and for the Aether Foilboard System on the screedless
floating floor upstairs. The Staple system is based on a gridded insulation
sheet spread over the sub-floor making the establishment of the piping design
extremely simple, and allowing the pipe to be speedily and permanently fixed
using the stapler provided before the top screed is laid.
With the Aether system used on the first floor, the pipes are simply walked
into the preformed grooves in a 35mm deep Foilboard featuring the high
compressive strength necessary with a floating floor. The aluminium finish on
the board helps provide truly well spread warmth throughout the floor when
the system is completed by the overlay of a tongue and groove cementitious
board that acts effectively as a screed substitute. Both systems use super
flexible 15mm polybutylene piping and are extremely installer friendly, as Mr.
Woollacott and his staff will confirm.
At The Retreat a total of 3260 metres of heating pipe was laid overall and
three manifolds were used on each floor. All areas were independently zoned
giving the user flexible temperature control. The Timoleon systems, being
extremely reactive to heat input, are once again proving eminently suitable
for use with the typically low temperature output of renewable energy heat
sources and they certainly meet the requirements in this lovely new country
home. www.timoleon.co.uk

Copper FAADE and Aluminium FAADE
flat-plate solar collectors enable the faade

Solar FAADE collectors are particularly
suitable for applications where there is insufficient space on a buildings roof for a solar
thermal array. The collectors are ideal for buildings with flat roofs in areas where planning
rules or aesthetic demands exclude a roof-top solar thermal installation. Incorporating
AETs Camel Solar flat-plate collectors into a vertical facade helps evens out the amount
of solar radiation falling on each unit. During the winter months, when the sun is low in
the sky and demand for heat at its highest, the FAADE collectors vertical location will
help maximise the take-up of solar radiation. However, during the summer when heat
demands are lower and the sun is high in the sky the FAADE collectors orientation
helps limit the amount of solar radiation falling on the unit.

Responsible companies are continually looking for ways to reduce their carbon
footprints. Lighting can account for anywhere between 10-20 per cent of an
organisations total energy bill and when set against a backdrop of increasing fuel
costs, reducing expenditure on this resource can appear to be an insurmountable task.
However, the introduction and innovative use of light emitting diode (LED) emergency
lighting has already resulted in significant savings for some forward thinking health
estate managers.
Correctly specified, installed and maintained emergency lighting plays a vital role in
keeping the occupants of a building safe from the potentially deadly consequences of
a failure in the general lighting. While a traditional system is often just left in standby
mode until it is needed, the flexibility of a modern LED based system means that it can
also be used as a secondary source of lighting one that is far more cost effective than using the mains equivalent.
LED luminaires produce less than five per cent of the carbon emissions of fluorescent lighting and this allows operating costs to be kept to a minimum without
compromising efficiency. They also operate via functional extra low voltage (FELV) power, meaning that a mains electricity supply does not have to be run to
every luminaire, which vastly reduces the amount of wiring associated with 230V cabling.
As well as energy efficiency, an LED emergency lighting system offers enhanced levels of control. At particular times of the day when certain areas may have a
much lower footfall, it can be used to provide general lighting via one of seven different levels of illumination. As each luminaire can be controlled independently,
areas of a building can be lit where and when necessary, for example, residents in a care home can have low-level lighting overnight in their rooms.
The use of low-level lighting can also enhance security, giving the impression that areas that are in fact closed are occupied. It is also possible to have a separate
switch so that the emergency lighting system can be activated to provide light at a pre-determined level to assist manned security patrols. While lighting can be
controlled via timers and light levels configured to suit particular requirements, in the event of an alarm situation the system will resort back to its primary use
and adjust the light levels accordingly.
Although reducing energy consumption is a formidable challenge, the savings possible by using LED based emergency lighting are significant and can go long way
in helping building managers achieve their carbon reduction targets. www.hochikieurope.com

nibe Ground sourCed heAt For CowPer FArm CottAGe
During a recent conversion, a delightful two bedroomed cottage at Cowper House
Farm was totally refurbished and transformed with the addition of a two bedroom
extension, living room and a conservatory at the rear. At the planning stage the
owners decided to install central heating from a renewable source and, as a further
way of conserving energy, converted the existing 9 brickwork to a cavity wall
construction.
Steven Bowes Building & Roofing
Contractor of Darlington, who
carried out the conversion
work, called on HT Energy Ltd,
another local company based in
Swainby, to design a suitably eco-
friendly heating system. Since
the cottage has a large open area
to the rear, HT Energy devised a
ground sourced system involving
the burial of some 500 metres of
ground looped plastic piping at a
depth just below the frost level,
around one metre in the cold North Country.
Filled with an anti-freeze solution, the pipe is linked to a NIBE F1245 8kW Heat
Pump handily sited in the double garage near the cottages back door. The solution
is warmed by the solar warmth permanently stored in the soil and is passed through
to the heat pump where it is harvested into the pumps closed system containing a
refrigerant that converts liquid to gas at a comparatively low temperature. Passing
through the pumps highly efficient compressor very sharply raises the temperature
before a condenser is employed so that the resulting heat can be passed into the
super-insulated hot water cylinder (situated beside the heat pump) ready for use.
The F1245, one of NIBEs new generation of pumps, is one of the most efficient on
the market and as well as generating maximum heat it also cuts CO2 emissions to
an absolute minimum.
HT Energy, a NIBE registered VIP installer, linked the unit into the under-floor
heating system on the ground floor and to the radiator heating on the first floor and
the heat pump will also supply the domestic hot water requirements of the entire
house. The F1245 heat pump is contained in a nicely styled unit only 1800 x 600 x
625mm in size with exceptionally clear and easily accessed controls.
The unit incorporates an immersion heater in case of exceptional hot water demand
coinciding with peak central heating usage but experience indicates that it is unlikely
to be required. Steven Bowes, main contractor for the conversion was delighted at
the ease and rapidity with which the ground sourced heating system was installed.

whAt Lies beneAth the GreAt british domestiC rooF?
soLArs niGhtmAre is About to Get A dreAm soLution!
Leaving the debate surrounding feed in tariffs to one side, the spiraling cost of domestic
fuel is most likely enough to ensure consumer demand for alternative renewable energy
supplies will continue... and that means the sight of solar PV panels nestling on roof
tops up and down the country will become a regular feature of our suburban landscape.
However, given that the majority of bracket-type mounting systems currently available
were developed during the continental solar boom and are consequently type-specific, UK
installers have been quick to point out that as a result, they often find themselves without
the correct product for the job in hand.
They will also tell you that structural modifications made over the years, roof abnormities
or differences from their foreign counterparts, means that no two UK roof installations
are ever the same. The challenge regularly becomes how to integrate existing bracket
types into a typical domestic roof. When the initial installation survey is made, it is
generally carried out from ground level, which means it is constrained. The survey will
recommend an appropriate sized system and from this recommendation the wind loading
calculations will determine the number of brackets required. At present the style of
bracket is selected in line with the tile type - either slate, clay or concrete to name but
a few.
It isnt until the scaffold is in place and the installer begins to strip the roof that it becomes
apparent that a bracket designed, for example, to fit the wide timbers of a snow-loaded
Bavarian roof simply does not immediately satisfy British building standards. The installer
is faced with three options; manipulation of the bracket or roof (i.e. packing or adding
noggins etc); he can down tools and seek a replacement or alternatively, carry an unrealistic
amount of stock in an attempt to anticipate whatever lies beneath the great British roof.
Meeting the challenge
Never slow to meet an installation challenge, EJOT UKs development team has been
working in partnership with a UK based OEM that has accrued a wealth of knowledge
relating to the installation issues created by our domestic roof types. As a result, EJOT
is ready to launch a one-bracket, one-stock flexible solution that will minimise waste,
eradicate loss of time and is very easy to install. A bracket designed specifically for British
roofs will also ensure a watertight fit and a professional long lasting installation. I-Clip,
as it will be branded, is a modular and fully adjustable fixing system incorporating what
the developers describe as the worst case scenario solution built in to the design. Put
another way, they believe it will provide installers with one fixing suitable for almost all
configurations of British roof types, and a manageable stock of modular components ready
to be deployed.
EJOT UKs Product Manager for Solar products is Ben Gallant. He explained the simplicity
of the new fixing; I-Clip is made up of just three main components; plate, spacer and arm.
They assemble using two stainless steel countersunk bolts and a bespoke stainless steel
variant of our A2 Austenitic Stainless steel self-drilling fastener, adapted specifically for
the task. The fastener variant was tested and selected to eradicate the need to insert a
noggin between the minimum width rafters of a trussed roof design, allowing the I-Clip to
be mounted directly whilst conforming to Eurocode specifications. Its the fasteners core
diameter and load strength ratio that is the key to making the I-Clip system so effective in
this recurring scenario. A high strength tandem fix can now be achieved without any risk
of splitting the rafters
Rigorous Testing
Fixing strength is crucial as wind loadings on solar panels can be extremely large. I-Clip has
been extensively tested through consultation with the Buildings Research Establishment
(BRE), and has also been put through its paces at an independent Finite Element (FE)
testing facility in the UK. The Microgeneration Certificate Scheme dictates that all wind
loadings should be calculated in accordance with the BREs recommendations in line with
MIS 3002 (installation of PV systems in the UK). Testing was focused around a dummy
roof and panel installation which was then repeatedly subject to forces designed to
simulate wind loadings to an acceptable fail point. I-Clip was tested to a loading equivalent
to 163mph wind speed.
EJOT has announced that I-Clip will officially be launched by mid-February but are happy
to discuss the products technicalities now. Ben Gallant said Were just finalising the
I-Clip component stocks in the UK, ready for launch next month. We believe that it is an
exciting addition to EJOTs solar mounting portfolio,
and one that has been exclusively developed in the UK for the UK market. I-Clip holds
a full design registration through the UK patents office and EJOTs technical support team

Riverside, one of the leading social housing and regeneration
organisations in England, has re-roofed 404 properties on
the Botcherby Estate in Carlisle using Sandtofts Olympus,
Rivius and Modula clay roof tiles. The new roofs form part
of a refurbishment which has seen the external envelope of
each house transformed with new fascias, gutters, rendered
panels and canopies.
Built around 75 years ago, the houses are located on an estate
which has changed dramatically over the last few years as a
result of a multi million pound neighbourhood revitalisation
investment by Riverside. The properties featuring Sandtofts
products are spread over three different streets in Botcherby
and originally featured Gaelic clay tiles.
As well as supplying roof tiles, Sandtoft worked closely
with the contractors and Riverside to develop a roofing
specification that required no mortar. This included the use of
dry valleys and bonding gutters as well as Koratech, a vapour
permeable membrane which unlike traditional Bitumen
underlay, helps to prevent condensation in the roof space.
John Robinson, Asset Investment Manager from Riverside
said: We were considering reusing the Gaelic tiles until we
were shown the Olympus clay double pantile and realised
the cost savings that could be achieved. The dry fixing system
was also a major benefit as it could be fitted in any weather
ensuring that the construction programme wasnt delayed.
We used the Olympus clay double pantile on one of the
streets and the Modula and the Rivius on a further two roads.
Overall, the appearance of the properties in all three areas
is very pleasing and the estate looks considerably better and
more modern. We have received numerous compliments
about the estate which has changed from a place where
houses were difficult to let, to one which has a waiting list of

The Olympus, Rivius and Modula tiles are part of Sandtofts
New Generation range. Each tile in the range has been
designed to make a natural clay roof more affordable as a
result of an innovative design that significantly reduces
installation costs. Approximately 10 tiles are required per
square metre, resulting in a covering capacity that matches
the largest concrete tiles. In addition, an open gauge means
there is no need for cutting at the eaves and ridge making the
tiles quick and easy to lay.
Andrew Lawton, Sandtofts sales director added: The
Botcherby project was an excellent opportunity for us to
showcase the variety and adaptability of our New Generation

The latest range of ACO Q-Ceptor bypass oil separators includes a number
of new features that focus on cutting installation time and costs. Versatile inlet
and outlet manifolds will now allow contractors to make quick connections
without the need for any additional expensive coupling units and a new
ductile iron cover and frame will provide a certified D400 Load Class rating.
Both new inlet and outlet connection manifolds are identical, accepting
160mm PVC-U and 225mm, 300mm and 375mm twin wall or clay pipe work.
They are now fitted as standard across all four sizes in the ACO Q-Ceptor
bypass separator range. The new ductile iron cover and frame is designed to
meet specific Load Class D 400 environments and is supplied as an optional
extra.
First introduced in 2010, the ACO Q-Ceptor range is available in bypass or
full retention configurations. Each unit has a unique, vertically configured
single treatment chamber that is designed to extend filtration performance,
ease access and reduce the separators overall footprint a feature that also
significantly lowers installation and maintenance costs. The four Q-Ceptor
sizes provide the capacity range to cover the vast majority of rainfall events in the UK; and both bypass and full retention options can be set to deliver
eitherClass1(5mg/litreofoil)orClass2(100mg/litreofoil)dischargeperformance. EachunitisindependentlycertifiedtoBSEN858-1andBSEN
858-2 and, as an Environment Agency verified manufacturer, all ACO separators meet the requirements of the Agencys Pollution Prevention Guidelines
(PPG3).
In line with the requirements of BS EN 858 and the Environment Agency, all ACO Q-Ceptors are available with a full range of visual and audible
alarm systems. These continuously monitor the critical operating conditions within the separator and give sufficient warning to prevent any pollutant
discharge into the environment. An optional sampling pump can also be fitted within the separator which avoids the additional expense of installing a
remote secondary chamber to monitor discharge quality.
To ensure reliable performance all oil separators require regular maintenance and servicing. Through its service partners, who work closely with
the UK Environment Agencies, ACO is able to offer nationwide maintenance and servicing programmes, waste disposal, inspection, testing and full
installation and commissioning of oil separators and alarms. www.aco.co.uk

Sureclad ceramic granite ventilated cladding doesnt just transform a building
aesthetically, says Shackerley Chief Executive Brian Newell, Its also a highly
sustainable way to protect and enhance a building and has contributed towards
BREEAM ratings of Excellent and Very Good in architectural projects across the UK.
Ventilated facade systems
The environmental benefits of ventilated facade systems are well understood. They
protect buildings from the elements and enable highly effective thermal and acoustic
insulation to be fitted between the building shell and the facade, significantly improving
energy efficiency. The all important ventilated cavity helps to eliminate thermal and
acoustic bridging and the air flow minimises condensation risks and allows the building
to breathe , serving to maintain a healthy indoor climate.
Why ceramic granite?
An engineered material made entirely from natural constituents, ceramic granite is
exceptionally hard, durable and strong, offering a proven faade solution with known
performance. Slabs of just 12mm thick offer outstanding building protection, so
loadings on the substructure and building exterior compare very favourably with
traditional cladding materials. Supplied in a myriad of colourways, styles and finishes
to reproduce natural stone such as granite and marble, this innovative material offers
an almost limitless array of design options.
Sustainability
Not only is ceramic granite an attractive, durable and versatile facade option, it is also
a sustainable solution. The manufacturing process recreates the forces of nature. A
blend of carefully selected refined clays, quartz, feldspars and metal oxides are dry
pressed at up to 12500 tonnes and fired at 1260oc to form ceramic granite slabs. No
bonding agents or resins are needed. No waterproofing chemicals or coatings are
used in the finishing stages.
Shackerleys ceramic granite is sourced and manufactured in compliance with the
European Ecolabel Certification scheme and many ranges also have L.E.E.D (Leadership
in Environmental and Energy Design) credits. To an increasing degree recycled material
is being incorporated into the ranges we offer: in some cases the material has 40%
recycled pre-consumer waste content.
Fully vitrified with virtually zero porosity, ceramic granite is unaffected by climatic
extremes and conforms to all international standards for water absorption and freeze
and thaw resistance. Facades will not absorb airborne contamination or dust, nor will they support algae
growth. They are impervious to acids and alkalis and resistant to graffiti damage. Completely inert, they do
not release radon or any other radioactive gases and remain unaffected by UV light. These characteristics
assure the client of long lasting performance and minimal maintenance requirements.
Aluminium substructure
The Sureclad substructure is constructed from high grade (6063/T6) aluminium, selected for its corrosion
resistance, formability and exceptional strength to weight ratio. It also contributes to a more sustainable
system as this versatile building material is one of the most globally abundant metals and it can be easily
recycled at the end of its useful life. (In the global construction industry up to 90% of aluminium is recycled,
re-smelted again and again without loss of performance in a process using only 5% of the energy required
for primary extraction).

Shackerley is committed to continuous research and the development of our environmental credentials. To

As part of the Archbishop McGrath Catholic High Schools 20m relocation
to Brackla, in the heart of Bridgend, a new state-of-the-art school facility
has been created. With environmental considerations paramount in the new
development, a durable and sustainable cladding solution was required.
For this, HLM specified Artema cladding from leading producer of facade
systems, Carea. The school, providing education for more than 40 years, has
seen its student numbers double in the last 20 years. Combining increasing
numbers with the gradual deterioration of existing buildings, consultation was
carried out with the Bridgend County Borough Council, Welsh Government
and Archdiocese of Cardiff to assess the schools need for investment. As a
result, the commitment to spend 20m on a new building was agreed, with the
new school offering 8,500m2 of space including science laboratories and music
suites as well as an all-weather sports pitch.
With any new development, sustainability was of utmost importance. Main
contractors Leadbitter and HLM designed the school to achieve a BREEAM
(2008) excellent rating. To provide this green school facility, the buildings
design incorporates large amounts of insulation, recyclable materials and the
use of local manufacturers and labour wherever possible. The external facade
was also crucial to achieving the required BREEAM rating. With this in mind
Carea was chosen to create an envelope that comprising of 95% natural
minerals also offers superb thermal insulation, protecting the building against
changes in temperature and eliminating thermal bridging.
The Carea system provides a wide range of benefits in addition to thermal
efficiency and aesthetic appeal. Requiring minimal maintenance, the Artema
panels are designed and manufactured to be non-porous. As such, this ensures
that they provide an economical solution and long-term resistance to graffiti,
weather conditions and climate.
The Carea cladding panels specified by
HLM in riven texture and basalte colour,
have been installed across three storeys
and cover approximately 25% of the
schools total external walls. The dark
grey 16mm Carea panels provide the
school with a contemporary appearance,
perfectly complementing the buildings
modern architecture.
Installed by specialist contractor, Central
Cladding Systems, the Carea Artema
system is supported with a comprehensive range of joint fittings. This enabled
Central Cladding Systems to efficiently anchor the cladding panels to the
buildings cladding support system. Held firmly in place, the cladding helps to
create a thermally efficient building envelope whilst matching the architects
creative vision.
With the durable and eye-catching Carea cladding system installed, the new
school building looks set to meet all of the clients and designers targets,
delivering a stunning school building for the 21st Century. www.carea.uk.com

The exterior skin of a cavity wall is designed to become wet when
rain falls. The cavity prevents that wetness from reaching the
inside skin.Wherever the skins connect at lintel level, a dpc tray
ensures the penetrating water is prevented from reaching the inside
skin. Similarly all wall ties are shaped so water tracking along a
tie drips off it into the cavity before it reaches the inner skin. The
attachment to an existing exterior skin
of an extension results in the original
exterior skin becoming an internal wall
below the new roofline. If the abutting
roof is flashed only, there is nothing
to prevent the penetrating wetness
from gravitating downwardly into the
new extension. The solution is to

Described as a remarkable building, the
$85m KfW scheme was designed by
architects Sauerbruch Hutton to combine
form, colour and sustainability. With a
primary energy consumption of just
98kWh/m2, it is also one of the worlds
most sustainable office buildings.
The building, known as Westarkade, provides
office space for 700 staff and a conference
centre. Its base is a curved four-storey
podium connected to the banks adjacent
buildings on several levels. A 10-storey
tower rises above the podium in a flowing
form that responds to the prevailing wind
direction and orientation of the sun,
maximising natural day light and achieving
the best possible views for the occupants of
the neighbouring KfW buildings.
The schemes most distinctive feature is its
bespoke double skin faade constructed
using Wiconas aluminium unitised curtain
walling.
The envelope consists of an encircling
sawtooth-shaped cavity which encloses automated blinds to reduce solar
gain and control glare. The exterior is defined by a skin of fixed tempered
glass panels and colourful ventilation flaps in red, blue and green, helping to
create a striking aesthetic. The internal faade has alternating opening and
fixed glazed units.
This dynamic faade solution negates the effect of variable pressures around
the building, allowing natural ventilation all year round and for the occupiers
to open the windows on the inner skin whilst avoiding both draughts and
heat loss.
A roof-mounted weather station linked to the building management
system monitors wind speed and direction, and controls the faades
outer ventilation flaps. This solution introduces fresh air when required
and creates a zone of constant pressure surrounding the inner skin of
curtain walling. Air can then be drawn into the offices via floor vents or the
occupier-controlled windows.
Commenting on the award, Peter Murray, one of the CTBUH judges, said,
The streamlined form of the building integrates itself into its surrounding
context, whilst simultaneously standing out through the playful use of
colour. Whereas many buildings use colour as a way to mask an otherwise
unremarkable building, here it contributes an additional rich layer to what is
already a remarkable building.
KfW is one of the largest banks in Germany and is at the forefront of
the countrys demanding energy policies. It was therefore a key project
requirement to develop a highly sustainable office building for its
headquarters expansion.
Wicona offers one of the most widely used and technically advanced
unitised faades in Europe, which is particularly suited to high rise, complex
and bespoke faade designs. The panels can accommodate any combination
of profiles, external feature caps and glazing, and can carry stone cladding;
metal, composite or polycarbonate panels; windows, doors and fixed light
glazing; brise soleil sunshading and photovoltaic panels. www.wicona.co.uk

Cities have to constantly change and adapt to survive and no more so than the commercial
centres where many fine buildings from past ages have become redundant. Fortunately, architects
and property owners with vision are capitalising on this, increasingly finding new and innovative
ways to keep our building heritage in active service. Many are converted to residential use,
restaurants, clubs, galleries and of course Hotels, thereby maintaining the vibrancy that a city
needs.
A consequence of a vibrant neighbourhood is noise and Selectaglaze, the UKs leading specialist
in secondary glazing systems has recently been involved with two Central London boutique hotel
developments, The Zetter Hotel in Clerkenwell and Hotel Indigo in the Minories. Originally a
warehouse and once the home of the football pools company of the same name, the five-storey
59-room boutique Zetter Hotel opened to critical acclaim, being voted one of the worlds 50
coolest hotels by industry bible Conde Nast Traveller and its restaurant has recently been
voted the third best in the UK. The owners of the Zetter Hotel strongly believe that the health
and happiness of future generations is dependent on a commitment to sustainable ways of living
and working. They aim to reduce energy consumption and become carbon neutral and to work
with suppliers that share their sustainability commitment.
To this end the Hotel collects fresh water via its own borehole beneath the building; has installed
an energy loop system capable of swapping energy around to heat rooms and cool fridges and
natural light and ventilation is provided by The Zetters cleverly designed central semi-elliptical
atrium. The hotel had retained the buildings original sash windows and installed bi-folding
shutters to the room side of the bedrooms but this combination did not provide the required
level of noise insulation. To remedy this, Selectaglaze provided sliding secondary units fitted flush
to the window openings, thus allowing easy access to the shutters and external windows. This
has not only produced exceptionally quiet rooms but will help considerably in reducing energy
consumption.
Hotel Indigo located in The Minories, on the edge of the Square Mile within the capitals main
financial district, is a four star hotel, part of the word-wide InterContinental Hotels Group. The
Indigo brand launched in America in 2004 and arrived in the UK four years later. The new hotel
in The Minories is the latest in what is now a 38 strong world-wide chain. Each Hotel Indigo
is unique and designed to reflect the local culture, character and geography of the surrounding
area.
Occupying what was formerly an office building and bank, conversion to a top class boutique
hotel and restaurant was a major architectural and interior design undertaking. As part of the
conversion it was decided to replace the windows with double glazed frames but standard
double glazing does not provide the levels of sound insulation needed by the guests. The solution
was to install secondary glazing, thus creating triple-glazing which offered noise insulation in
excess of 45dB and further improved the energy performance of the window, reducing heating
costs and improving sustainability.
The secondary windows were made bespoke to ensure the best fit and included horizontal
sliding, vertical sliding and hinged casements all finished in a grey powder paint to blend with
the new external windows. Selectaglazes secondary windows are designed to maintain the
character of the property and are accepted by all Heritage bodies. Frames have a permanent,
easily maintained finish usually white but a wide choice of colour options together with a
selection of timber-grained finishes are available to suit almost any dcor. The ability to shape
and curve frames and discrete installation ensures sympathetic treatment.
Refurbishments are often fast track projects requiring close cooperation between client,
contractor, specialists and the professional team. Selectaglaze has wide experience of working
in buildings up to Grade 1 listed and offers a technical advisory service and specification advice
to ensure correct interface with other trades. Programmes are particularly important and
proactive site surveys linked to a modern production facility working on Lean principles ensures
that projects are delivered on time and installation undertaken with minimal disruption, which is
particularly important when working within Hotels.

Nullifires new S708 moisture resistant water-borne intumescent coating for 60
minutes has proved the ideal fire protection solution for a new steel-frame car-park
building in Gloucester.
The new 9 million multi-storey car park at the Gloucester Royal Hospital is for
Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust. It features a slender steel frame with timber
louvers arranged in a wave pattern to prevent headlights shining into neighbouring
properties while at the same time allowing in natural light and ventilation.
Built by Vinci Construction and operated by sister company Vinci Park, the new
structure required a fire rating of 60 minutes in a semi-exposed environment.
The majority of conventional intumescent fire-protective coatings are designed
for installation within the building usually beneath dry-lining or other finishes.
However, on this project, where the perimeter steelwork is semi-exposed, a durable
moisture-resistant product was required.
Cardiff-based specialist third party accredited installer R Lewis and Co therefore
selected Nullifires S708 intumescent coating for this project, with 2 coats of Nullifire
TS815 top seal to finish.
It was R Lewis who really drove this and pushed for the Nullifire S708 on this job
says Nullifires technical services and contract support engineer David Lamb. S708
is unique in that unlike other moisture-resistant products, it is water-borne, not
solvent-based.
This has several advantages continues Mr Lamb. Firstly, it is a thin-film coating so
loadings are potentially lower and thus less product may require for any given job.
Also, because S708 is water-borne, it is low-VOC. That means it is a lower health
risk and is less harmful to the environment including local residents and applicators.
On this project, the close proximity of the car-park to the main building also meant
that any fumes given off by a solvent-based product could enter the hospital itself or
residential properties.
For contractors, a water-based product has other benefits too, says Mr Lamb: Its
easier to clean your equipment using water and disposing of waste product is easier,
cost effective and less hazardous.
Although only the perimeter steels occupy a semi-exposed position, R Lewis chose
to use S708 throughout the car-park. The perimeter steels were then finished with
two coats of Nullifires TS815 top seal in grey, while the internal steels were given a
coat of TS815 in white. All products were spray-applied on site.
With the Nullifire TS815 top-coat, the new water-based intumescent will give good
long-term protection even in areas subject to moisture penetration says Mr Lamb.

mCdonALds Choose Ardex tiLe FixinG soLution
ARDEX UK have been appointed by the worlds largest family restaurant
chain, McDonalds, to supply a tile fixing solution for the re-fit of all of their
UK restaurant locations.
ARDEX proposed an efficient cost and labour saving tile on tile solution
for the tiling refurbishment. Each refit will commence with the existing
wall and floor tiles
being cleaned with
ARDEX DGR
Degreaser. To facilitate
tile on tile application,
ARDEX P4 Primer
was specified for use
onto the existing
tiles. ARDEX P 4
produces a textured
surface which helps
the adhesive grip
to the tile, preventing slipping and movement, and offers rapid drying of
just one hour, enabling the early fixing of new tiles with ARDEX X 77
MICROTEC Flexible Floor & Wall Tile Adhesive. ARDEX X 77 has an open
time of up to 60 minutes, providing greater fixing efficiency over large
areas, and has been developed to fix heavier, larger tiles without slipping.
For the floors, ARDEX P 4 Primer was specified for use on the existing
floor tiles prior to the application of ARDEX MICROTEC X 78 S Ultra
Rapid Setting Floor Tile Adhesive, to fix the new tiles. ARDEX X 78 S has
a unique consistency that makes it ideal for solid bed fixing large format
tiles, and provides all of the benefits of a pourable adhesive without the
disadvantages (such as dripping). ARDEX-FLEX FL Rapid Setting Flexible
Grout, with built-in admix, was chosen to fill the tile joints.

sikA ensures smooth runninG oF Luton dunstAbLe buswAY
Sika concrete admixtures are being used in the
production of high quality precast concrete
beams and slabs on the 89 million Luton
Dunstable Busway. The main section of the route
is a 7.4km guided segregated section where the
buses will run and be guided on a concrete track.
The L shaped concrete beams on which the buses
will run are 6 metres long and 480mm high and
weigh 4.8 tonne and are accurate to within 2mm.
The concrete needs to achieve high early strength, enabling the precast moulds to be speedily
and efficiently turned around - essential for the contractor to maintain the tight production
schedule. In order to meet these requirements, Sika

Viscocrete

25MP concrete admixture is

an important ingredient in the production of the precast base slabs and beams that make up the
track. It ensures that the concrete moves freely through the precast moulds, fully encapsulating
the steel reinforcement. High early strength is obtained together with an excellent surface
finish. www.sikawatertightconcrete.co.uk
