Secondary Lesson Plan Template

Title: World War I: The Beginning of the War and The End of Neutrality Description (1-2 sentences): This unit will look at the factors that led up to the Great War and what ultimately led to the United States straying away from its position of neutrality. Unit Essential Question: What was the role of the United States in World War I? Subject: American History: World War I Instructional Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Students grade level: 11th grade Standard(s) to be addressed (Iowa Core 6-8 or 9-12): 5.8a Explain the economic and cultural factors that led to US entry into WWI. 5.8b Trace the course of WWI and its results. Resources used in this lesson: Hypotheses worksheet for why the United States entered the war Century: Shell Shock with Peter Jennings film Note sheet Laserdisc Learning Objectives that meet the standard above (no more than three): Students will be able to explain why the United States entered World War I and support it with specific evidence. Students will be able to identify what caused the outbreak of the Great War. Guiding question for this lesson: What factors led to the U.S. being drawn into the Great War? Motivational strategies that you will use: This particular unit has consisted of me talking in front of the class more than normal so the film will be a good way for students to be presented the information in a different manner. The group work based on the hypotheses worksheets allow students to pace their learning and voice their opinion. Type of instructional method(s) used in this lesson: Lecture Group Work Film accompanied with discussion Analysis of photographs

Procedures - list carefully and completely what the students will do Watch the film Century: Shell Shock with Peter Jennings to introduce students to World War I. Journal Question: What were the causes of World War I? What were the countries on each

side of the conflict? What was the outcome of the war? Brief lecture on the reasons for World War I and an introduction to who was fighting. (Powerpoint) Hand out hypotheses worksheets examining why the United States entered the war. Have students look them over to determine why they believe the United States entered the war. Have the students break up into groups and discuss why they feel like that particular reason is the primary one that the U.S. entered the war. Finish lecture on World War I with the reasons for why the U.S. entered the war. Look at select pictures from laserdisc on World War I and discuss the importance of each and how it relates to this particular time period. Exit Slip: What were the causes of the Great War? What were the countries on each side? Why did the US enter the war after claiming neutrality early on?

Technology needed for this lesson: Powerpoint and projector VCR and projector Laserdisc and projector Adaptations needed to meet student needs (ELL, SPED, etc.): Students who are ELL should be helped by the film which is a very visual representation of the content. All students will be assisted because of the note sheet and the Powerpoint. Students who have poor vision will have no problem reading the text on the Powerpoint. Thinking strategies used in this lesson: Students will need to analyze a variety of hypotheses and use their critical thinking skills to determine which hypothesis is most accurate. Assignment (what happens after this lesson; if no assignment, write none): None Assessment of the objectives for this lesson (how do you know what the students learning): I will be able to determine what the students are learning through their discussion in class of the film. I will also be able to tell based on their discussions related to the Hypotheses worksheets.
