Read the questions very carefully! There are thirteen questions on this paper. Answer all questions! 1. The period T of a pendulum of mass M is given by the expression

Where g is the gravitational field strength and h is a length. Determine the base units and dimension of the constant l. 2. A student, standing on the platform at a railway station, notices that the first carriages of an arriving train pass her in 2.0 s, and the next two in 2.4 s. the train is decelerating uniformly. Each carriage is 20 m long. When the train stops, the student is opposite the last carriage. How many carriages are there in the train? 3. A hunter, armed with a bow and arrow, takes direct aim at a monkey hanging from the branch of a tree. At the instant that the hunter releases the arrow, the monkey takes avoiding action by releasing its hold on the branch. By setting up the relevant equations for the motion of the monkey and the motion of the arrow, show that the monkey was mistaken in its strategy. 4. (a) State what is meant by: (i) work done? (ii) power? (b) The air in a car tyre has a volume of 7.8 x 103 cm3. The tyre suddenly bursts and the air expands to 3.5 times its original volume in a time of 2.5 ms. Atmospheric pressure is 1.0 x 105 Pa. Calculate: (i) the work done by the air in the tyre during the expansion, (ii) the mean power dissipated in the air bursts.

5. A ball of mass m makes a perfectly elastic head-on collision with a second ball, of mass M, initially at rest. The second ball moves off with half the original speed of the first ball. a. Express M in terms of m. b. Determine the fraction of the original kinetic energy retained by the ball of mass m after the collision. 6. The times for Mars and Jupiter to orbit the Sun are 687 days and 4330 days respectively. The radius of the orbit of Mars is 228 x 10 6 km. calculate the radius of the orbit of Jupiter? 7. The gravitational field strength at the surface of the moon is 1.62 N kg-1. The radius of the Moon is 1740 km. Show that the mass of the Moon is 7.35 x 1022 kg. 8. A volume of 1.50 x 103 m3 of hydrogen, at a pressure of 2.00 x 105 Pa and a temperature of 30 oC, is heated until both volume and pressure are doubled. Calculate: a. The final temperature, b. The mass of hydrogen. (mass of one mole of hydrogen = 2.00 x 10-3 kg) 9. A source of sound has frequency f. Sound of wavelength is produced by the source. a. State (1) What is meant by the frequency of the source, (2) The distance moved, in terms of , by a wavefront during n oscillations of the source. b. Use your answers in (a) to deduce an expression for the speed v of the wave in terms of f and . x 10. L An ideal gas system, suppose that the container is a cube of side L. If the motion of each molecules can be Cy y z resolved into x, y, z component. Cy is the velocity of the molecule to the direction of y component. If p, m, V, T are the quantities of momentum, mass, volume and temperature. Derive the equation of root mean square speed of the ideal gas system (Vrms)? 11. The circuit arranged as shown in figure below:

The e.m.f. E of the battery is 6.0 V, R1 and R2 are equal 20 ohm. Determine: a. the current in the circuit, b. the potential different in the R2. 12. Calculate the half-lives of the following radioactive nuclides: a. Bismuth-214, which has a decay constant of 4.3 x 103 s-1, b. Carbon -14, which has a decay constant of 4.1 x 10-12 s-1. 13. Two containers, each of equal, constant volume, are connected by a tube of negligible volume. When the temperature of both containers is 27 oC, the pressure of the gas in the containers is 2.1 x 105 Pa. One container is heated to a temperature of 127 oC, whilst the other is maintained at 27 oC. Calculate the final pressure in the containers.
