    DETECTION & TREATMENT OF ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS IN ADOLESCENTS AND CHILDREN


    Course Description and Objectives
    The consequences of alcohol and drug dependence are vast and often have its roots in childhood and adolescence. Therefore, it is critical to effectively screen for the signs and symptoms of substance use and abuse at the earliest stages possible. Once screening takes place there are a host of treatments available that have proven efficacy. The emphasis in this course will be on connecting research to practice in order to forge a stronger association between interdisciplinary empirical findings on substance use and abuse in childhood and adolescence on one hand and the policies and practices needed for increased effectiveness of social workers on the other. The primary objectives are to: 1) Review cutting-edge research on childhood origins of substance abuse biological, psychological, and epidemiologic findings. 2) Review types of common abuse substances and techniques for early screening and detection. Discuss relevant and evidence-based strategies that can be delivered in a feasible and efficient manner.     This workshop benefits both clinicians and frontline staff who work with children and adolescents. Attendees will receive 3 Continuing Education credits.

    Presenters
    Michael G. Vaughn is currently Associate Professor in the School of Social Work and holds appointments in Public Policy and the Department of Community Health, Division of Epidemiology, Saint Louis University School of Public Health. Dr. Vaughn has published over 90 articles. In addition to several projects examining psychopathology, adolescent health, adolescent substance abuse, self-regulation, school dropout, and violence, he is developing and testing a general biosocial public health model for research and intervention applications. Dr. Vaughn is developing and testing a general biosocial public health model for research and intervention applications. Shannon Cooper-Sadlo is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Saint Louis University School of Social Work. She currently teaches a BSSW level practice course, an MSW level course in the Health and Mental Health Concentration, and serves as a faculty liaison in the Field Education department. Ms. Cooper-Sadlo is a graduate of the Saint Louis University BSSW program and of the University of Denver MSW program. She has been in clinical practice for 14 years. Ms. CooperSadlo has significant experience in hospitals and community mental health settings with duallydiagnosed populations.
