Selection of tripping curve

B curve Tripping: 3 to 5 In (IEC 60898); protection of generators, long cables... C curve Tripping: 5 to 10 In (IEC 60898); general applications : lighting, power outlets D curve Tripping: 10 to 20 In (IEC 60898), 10 to 14 In protection of circuits with high current inrush: transformers, motors, sodium lights, large inductive loads

Switching off short-circuit current

IEC 60 364: the breaking capacity (Icn) of the circuit-breaker must be greater than or equal to the prospective short circuit-current (Isc). The prospective short-circuit current (Isc) depends on the power of the supply system (transformer) the impedance of the cable in between

Example Example : : for a usual 630 kVA transformer (delivering 800 Amps) for a usual 630 kVA transformer (delivering 800 Amps) : : Isc = 22 kA rms at transformer terminals; --Isc = 22 kA rms at transformer terminals; -Isc = 9 kA at the end of 120 sq.mm / /50 m cable - Isc = 9 kA at the end of 120 sq.mm 50 m cable Isc = 5 kA at the end of add. 35 sq.mm 30 m cable --Isc = 5 kA at the end of add. 35 sq.mm / /30 m cable

MCB Tripping Characteristics B, C and D Types

B, C and D curves, as in standard 60898 (NF C 61-410) The operating range of the magnetic release is as follows: for B curve: between 3 In and 5 In, for C curve: between 5 In and 10 In, for D curve: between10 In and14 In The curves show the cold thermal tripping limits when poles are charged and the electromagnetic tripping limits with 2 charged poles.
