About
Maptek is releasing Vulcan 8.0.4 in two formats. A full installation and a patch installation.

Vulcan 8.0.4 Full Installation

The preferred solution is to install the full Vulcan 8.0.4 format. Installing this will remove Vulcan 8.0.3 and install Vulcan 8.0.4.

Vulcan 8.0.4 Patch Installation

If the size of the full Vulcan 8.0.4 format is inconvenient to download, a patch installation is available. As designed, the Vulcan 8.0.4 patch builds on the Vulcan 8.0.3 release and cannot be installed over a Vulcan 8.0, 8.0.1 or 8.0.2 release. It must be installed over an existing Vulcan 8.0.3 release.

Installation Requirements
Maptek Vulcan 8.0.3 must be installed on the system to install the 8.0.4 patch. To begin the Vulcan 8.0.4 patch installation, access to the original Vulcan 8.0.3 installation source is required. The Vulcan 8.0.3 source is on the CD from the last release. Alternatively, download the Vulcan 8.0.3 release prior to patching, or point to your local file server if the installation files are located there. Note: If you need to download Vulcan 8.0.3 to install the patch, it is recommended to download the full Vulcan 8.0.4 Patch Installation file.

Before installing Vulcan 8.0.4:

Check that you have administrative privileges on the computer. Ensure the Windows Installer Service is enabled. Close all other applications such as virus scanners (recommended).

Set Environment Variables

If this is the first installation of Vulcan, prior to installation set the environment variables and allocate the correct amount of swap space/virtual memory.

Maptek Vulcan 8.0.4 Full Installation

If you have an existing version of Vulcan, you may wish to copy the etc/resources directory from the existing Vulcan version prior to installation. Refer to the information on the ENVIS_RESO environment variable. 1. Environment Variables Before installing Vulcan 8.0.4, set the following environment variables. a. TEMP and TMP These environment variables/directories are used by Vulcan to create temporary files needed during the program's execution, and should be set as system variables.

There should always be at least 200Mb (although we recommend 400Mb) of free space on the disk that contains the temp directory. The value of these two variables should be the same, and it should be the full path to the directory. We recommend using C:\Temp. This directory already exists. The directory path should not contain any spaces.

b.

ENVIS_RESO Vulcan will run using the defaults set during installation. However, if required by site management, these environment variables can be set to save resource files in a specific area on the hard drive or on a shared network drive. This option is used to allow multiple users to access files from a central location. Note: These resource files are not your working files, and are not found in the working directory.

www.maptek.com

Installing Maptek Vulcan 8.0.4 Page 2

Resource Files There are two main areas for the resource files: the System Data area and the Client area. We recommend creating an additional area external to Vulcan files to keep a copy of resource files as backup, and if desired, a site-wide directory for those systems using a network. System Data Files This area houses the following system data items: symbols library (symbols.dgd.isis); line styles library (lines.dgd.isis); and drafting sheet library (drafting.dgd.isis). This location can be set to a specific location. The system will locate the directory as $VULCAN/etc/resources/ by default. Client Area The client area contains copies of default files, such as perif.setup, patterns, and plot.setup. These files may be changed to suit your organisation's requirements. The client area can be set to a specific location. The initial default file copies will be put into $VULCAN/etc/resources/client by default.

Installing Maptek Vulcan 8.0.4 Page 3

External Resource Backup Resource files can be lost when updating Vulcan software. We recommend creating a directory external to the Vulcan files to save a copy of your resource files as backup. Site Wide Directory It is recommended to create a site-wide directory so all users can access files.

Setting the ENVIS_RESO 1. If installing Vulcan for the first time: once installation has finished, copy the Vulcan_804/etc/resources directory to the location where resource files will be stored. Choose a location that you have access to for the /etc/resources folder. For example, a subfolder in My Documents. Note: Subfolders in Program Files or Program Files (x86) are not preferred due to limited write access to these folders. 2. If using the /etc/resources folder as the ENVIS_RESO area, you need write permissions to this folder and its subfolders. 3. Set the value of the environment variable ENVIS_RESO to be the full path to the / etc/resources folder.

Swap Space/Virtual Memory 750Mb or more of virtual memory is recommended, with a minimum of 500Mb necessary for Vulcan to run properly. Note: To change the size of the virtual memory, you must be logged in as an Administrator or have administrative privileges.

The Corporate Standards option allows companies to enforce their own set of standards for a large range of Vulcan specification files. By having a set of company approved specification files (stored in a Corporate Standards folder), multiple users are able to access the same files. This minimises the need for multiple copies of the same files to be kept and reduces the chances of more than one user doing the same job with different specification files. Corporate Standards specification files need to be kept in a folder accessible to multiple users. Refer to the Corporate Standards section for more information. 14. Select Use Corporate Standards to create the Corporate Standards environment variable. 15. A default location is displayed.
