COMMANDERS CORNER
Squadron Commander, 2d Lt Wendell D. Meade

CAP EXCELLENCE Vince Lombardi, legendary head coach of the NFL Green Bay Packers, once said, Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence. What is excellence? Excellence can be defined as a state of possessing good qualities in an eminent degree; exalted merit; superiority in value. (Webster) One of the four CAP Core Values is Excellence. This is based on one of the United States Air Force Core Values, Excellence in all that we do. That USAF challenge is to develop a sustained passion for the continuous improvement and innovation that will propel the Air Force into a long-term, upward spiral of accomplishment and performance. (The Little Blue Book) Steve Jobs, icon of technology accomplishment and business entrepreneurship, and co-founder of Apple Computer, encouraged, Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected. Some might question, Why is pursuit of excellence important? Why isnt OK good enough? The answer lies in what you think of yourself, how much you respect and value yourself, how you view the enormous potential you hold in your life, and how much you demand of yourself. Youre in charge of you! Do you expect yourself to be your very best, in everything you do? Its certainly not easy to strive to be excellent. It requires constant self-awareness, determination, and discipline. But ask yourself, what do you do that doesnt deserve

Welcome to the second quarterly edition of the CAP Cadet Squadron 702 Newsletter. During the past three months our Squadron has expanded its program and volunteer activities, focusing on our mission to serve, and to develop our youth the aerospace leaders of the future. We have experienced a surge of requests for local community involvement and our Cadets have marched in holiday parades and provided Color Guard, earning kudos for their performance. At the September Cedarfest we staffed a CAP Recruitment Booth, providing increased public awareness of the CAP Cadet Program, and the Cedarville citizenry displayed much interest and a warm welcome. Our membership is on the rise, in both Cadets and Senior Members, and we anticipate that trend will continue. Our Squadron members have been very involved, participating in state-wide joint squadron activities, broadening general knowledge of military history through hands-on experiences, and strengthening the camping and service opportunities. We have pursued aggressive joint squadron training in Emergency Services, upgrading our ability to be a more effective unit in responding to requests for support. In addition, several of our Cadets have successfully completed phases of individual training, and have achieved promotions. Consistently, we have received positive feedback and expressions of appreciation from the public. As 2012 approaches, we will continue to strive to improve our recruitment and our CAP Program activities, focusing on developing practical skills, leadership and self-esteem. Our program will explore new areas and challenges, with an eye towards sustained excellence and achievement in our youth. I am very pleased with the progress of our Squadron, as we pursue our mission of service. I take pride in the positive attitude, the can do spirit, and the impressive accomplishments of all our Cadets.

Cadet Dudash rose through the CAP ranks to C/2d Lt in just two years, also earning the General Billy Mitchell Award. He stated that CAP has been very rewarding and has helped him grow as a person. CAP EXCELLENCE
(continued from page 1)

Heres a CAP Cadet Membership challenge for you and your fellow Squadron Cadets: During the next three months, why not see which Cadet can: bring the most guests to a Squadron meeting; find the most CAP articles and videos to share; give a presentation about CAP in class at your school; write an article about CAP for your school paper. One of the elements of CAP Cadet development is Leadership. Leadership involves envisioning what could be, determining the actions needed to achieve that, communicating the value of that vision, and influencing others to willingly follow you towards that vision. Can you develop your own Leadership skills by accepting this challenge, and encouraging others to follow you, and become CAP Cadets?

your very best effort? Whether its focusing on your schoolwork, competing in sports, helping with chores at home, wearing your uniform properly, setting an example, or leading others, you should always do your very best, and continually strive to improve your performance. Pat Riley, past NBA player and uber-successful NBA head coach, once noted that, Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better. In CAP, Excellence is the continuous effort to be the very best, and to consistently improve humanitarian service to America. In your own personal pursuit of excellence, you must first value yourself, then demand the best of yourself, and be always vigilant.
