Instructor's Course Philosophy: 1. Preparation is not optional. It is a minimum expectation. It's your education and your career. 2. Your attendance and attention are expected in this course, as they will be in your professional employment. Be on time and be prepared to participate. Failure to do so will be taken into consideration when grades are assigned. 3. Open and honest communication is as critical between student and instructor as it will be between employee and employer and between contractor and client. 4. Successful completion of this course will provide a solid background in principles needed for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam. Exams and Quizzes: There will be four exams, each worth 100 points. There may also be unannounced quizzes throughout the semester to monitor your preparedness for class. No questions about grading discrepancies on an individual exam will be considered after one week from the date that the exams are returned. Homework: Successful completion of practice problems is essential to success in a problem-oriented class such as Statics and Dynamics. To that end, homework will be assigned daily and the student is expected to make a sincere attempt to solve assigned problems prior to the next class. All homework will be done through masteringengineering.com (Course is GERTHSP12). The student will need to purchase the Mastering Engineering code and set up the course on-line. Homework will count for a total of 50 points at the end of the semester. Make-Up Work: If a student needs to be absent for a legitimate reason during the time in which an exam is to be given, the instructor may allow the student to take a make-up exam. Any requests to be allowed to take the make-up exam are to be cleared through the instructor and permission will be granted at the instructor's discretion. There will be no make-up for any missed quizzes. Grading: Final grades for the course will be earned on the basis of your performance on exams, quizzes, and homework. Grades will be based on a percentage of total points possible: % grade = 100 x (Points earned/Points possible) Letter grade equivalent: A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (60-69), F (<60) Plagiarism and Cheating: KSU has an Undergraduate Honor System based on personal integrity which is presumed to be sufficient assurance in academic matters that ones work is performed honestly and without unauthorized assistance. Undergraduate students, by registration, acknowledge the jurisdiction of the Undergraduate Honor System. The policies and procedures of the Undergraduate

Honor System apply to all full- and part-time students enrolled in undergraduate courses. The Honor Pledge (which is implied whether stated or not) applies to all assignments, examinations, or other coursework: On my honor, as a student, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this academic work. See www.ksu.edu/honor. Academic Accommodations for Disabled Students: If you have any physical or learning disability which will make it difficult for you to carry out the work as I have outlined in this syllabus or which will require academic accommodations, please notify me in the first week of the course. Copyright Issue: Class and lecture notes for this course carry a copyright (2012) and author (Susan L. Gerth). Students are prohibited from selling to (or being paid by for taking for) any person or commercial firm, notes during this course without the express written permission of the instructor teaching this course. It is important that you understand your rights and responsibilities regarding the Universitys Sexual and Racial Harassment policies (see www.ksu.edu/uauc/fhbook/fhxj.html). Professional Conduct: Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. Students should not request information or handouts from the instructor for missed classes. No food, beverages, smoking, or chewing are permitted in the classroom. In consideration of others, all cell phones are to be turned off during class time.
