Scholarly Times Week in Review:

3/12/12 3/16/12

This week, the Class of 2028 Minished our work with long vowels. We know the spelling patterns for long a, e, i, o, and u. In reading, we learned more about how- to books -- and even wrote our own how-to text. In math, we took our Unit 13 test and began adding! We started our expedition "We Are Biologists" and began talking about animals and their habitats. Be sure to ask your scholar what a habitat is, why it is important, and what the two different types of habitats are that we talked about. Your scholar should be able to tell you many examples of habitats. Next week, we will begin our Mirst case study on a special animal.

The Meaning of Persistence: Amir Bradley, 28

Class of 2027 (First Grade)

This week in literacy, the Class of 2027 turned our focus to characters in fantasy stories. We learned that there are many special kinds of characters, and we are now able to identify the hero, the villain, the trickster, and magical helpers. In math, we continued our addition and subtraction unit. We are using the drawing tens and ones strategy to add and subtract. Make sure to remove the cover sheet on this week's homework packet to learn more about this strategy. In science, we became experts on wheat and learned research skills. Each day this week, we examined a new research question regarding wheat and learned how to Mind useful information to answer our questions.

Amir has been working hard all year on acting like a Star Scholar. Through hard work and determination, Amir has behaved like a model scholar at all times during the past two weeks and has achieved Star Scholar both weeks! In addition to doing high quality work throughout the day, Amir has shown service to his peers by helping them focus and complete challenging work.

Have you ever wondered what animals need to survive or how bullfrogs use their habitats to catch prey? Just ask the Class of 2026. This week, we are completing our investigation of bullfrogs by writing our very own All about Bullfrogs" books. Scholars are taking all the knowledge they gained during our study of bullfrogs and using it to create Mlip books that explain how bullfrogs' physical features, life cycle, shelter and diet all help them survive in the wetlands. Scholars will be sharing their work with each other on Monday!

Class of 2026 (Second Grade)

Advice from Our School Nurse: Strep Throat

Strep throat is a disease caused by tiny ball-shaped bacteria called A streptococci. These bacteria cause 30% of all sore throats and are found in your throat and on skin. Strep throat is spread when healthy people come into contact with someone who has strep. It can spread through sneezes, coughs, and sharing utensils or straws. Symptoms typically appear within 5 days. Symptoms of strep throat include a sore throat, headache, stomachache, and fever.

The test for strep throat involves the doctor taking a cotton swab rubbing it over the back of the throat. Antibiotics are required to treat strep throat. If strep is left untreated, it can cause other problems. People usually feel better shortly after starting the antibiotic. People with strep should stay home until they have taken an antibiotic for at least 24 hours. It is very important take all the prescribed doses of antibiotic. Stopping the antibiotic sooner can cause people to become sick again.
